Hey, Obama: Fight the Smears

I wrote a special column today for the NYPost on how Barack Obama must do more to fight the smears — originating with members of his own team and extended family of slavering supporters — against Sarah Palin.
Megyn Kelly ripped a bumbling Us Weekly stooge here.
Erick Erickson of RedState has a suggestion: “We should encourage our readers to take the US Weekly magazines at their local grocery stores and stick them in the toilet paper section.” Hey, that’s an insult to the toilet paper.
Reader Kirk: “Why doesn’t the McCain camp ask Obama to return the money from the US Weekly owner?”

WHEN you point a finger, the old say ing goes, three fingers point back at you. When it comes to accusing his opponents of spreading vicious rumors, Barack Obama needs to pull back his finger and follow the other three.
Told of accusations that members of his team facilitated the avalanche of smears against GOP veep nominee Sarah Palin, he scoffed: “I am offended by that statement; there is no evidence at all that any of this involved us.” Obama insisted: “We don’t go after people’s families, we don’t get them involved in the politics. It is not appropriate and it is not relevant. Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be.”
Hmm. Depends on the meaning of “our people.” The new issue of Us Weekly hits newsstands Friday – hitting millions of readers with a smirk-attack on Gov. Palin, shown with her youngest son, Trig, in a photo plainly chosen to make her look weird.
The cover line: “BABIES, LIES & SCANDAL,” along with these juicy bullet-items:
“* Under attack, admits daughter, 17, is pregnant
“* Investigated for firing of sister’s ex-husband
“* Mom of five: New embarrassing surprises”
The story reads like a partisan hit job because, well, it is. Pimping the “report” to journalists at the Republican National Convention was Mark Neschis – a former Democrat flack turned corporate-communications chief for US Weekly’s owner, Wenner Media.
Wenner’s chief is Jann Wenner, a big-time Obama donor. In March, his flagship Rolling Stone ran a cover story dubbing Obama “The New Hope in the accompanying editorial, Wenner oozed: “We need to recover the spiritual and moral direction that should describe our country and ourselves.” In the July issue, he fawned over The Messiah’s “dazzling smile” in a seven-page sitdown interview. Rolling Stone put Obama’s face on the cover again over the summer. In June, Us Weekly ran a gushing cover story on Michelle and Barack Obama headlined, “Why Barack Loves Her.”
Obama could begin Wenner’s “spiritual and moral” recovery by condemning the use of gossip rags to wage partisan war on the Palin family.
And the Dem nominee can make good on his vow to fire smear-mongers by cutting loose one of his own people.
On Tuesday, much of the media – spurred by Obama supporters and left-wing blogs – falsely spread claims that Palin had been a member of the Alaskan Independence Party – many of whose members espouse secession. No state records exist of Palin’s membership in the party – and she’s been a registered Republican for more than a quarter-century. The New York Times had to retreat from its story on Palin’s “radical” ties, but the damage was done.
And Team Obama’s rumor-spreading wasn’t done yet. The Associated Press points to “Obama advisers and surrogates” who linked Palin this week to “conservative former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan.”
Mark Bubriski – Obama’s Florida spokesman – was one of those linkers. He sent an e-mail to the Miami Herald claiming: “Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan, a right-winger or as many Jews call him: a Nazi sympathizer.”
Wrong again. Palin attended a Buchanan visit to Alaska that year, but backed Steve Forbes’ White House run.
Offended yet, Barack?
To date, Bubriski has offered no apology and suffered no consequences. Meanwhile, MoveOn (which has endorsed Obama) has mass e-mailed the lie to thousands of activists.
Incensed at what it saw as unfair attacks on his character and family, the Obama campaign bought the domain name fightthesmears.com and launched an all-out effort in June to combat baseless rumors. But the site has been rather sleepy since its splashy debut.
To effect some change (and undo the damage done by his friends), maybe Obama would be willing to turn Fight the Smears over to Palin?

Nice, but I don’t think that’s going to be quite enough.
Time to bite the pillow Libtards! You’re being spanked!
That is a pretty Clintonesque statement. As one of my old bosses used to say, “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.” It applies in science, and it applies in political doublespeak.
Just say “we are not doing it, and we publicly condemn anyone who is.”
Point 2: all corrections and retractions by so called newspapers should be in the same position (i.e. front page, above the fold), frequency, and point size as the story being corrected or pulled.
Megyn Kelly had that twit tongue tied in the end. KO for megyn; way to kick him that head full of mush!
Megyn Kelly had that twit tongue tied in the end. KO for Megyn; way to kick him in that head full of mush!
And Obama sure knows how to insulate himself. Does he think we’re that stupid?
You mess with the hockey mom, you get the stick.
Palin vs. Obama,
I’ll take Palin in a knock out!
Sarah Palin vs. Angry White Men!
And repeated everyday on the front page for 2 weeks straight!
Even if Obama tells them to stop, do you honestly think the nutjobs at Kos and DU will? They just can’t help themselves. They’ll throw every piece of trash they can think of out there and the MSM will say it’s real news.
Megyn Kelly would make a terrific White House Press secertary.
It’s Killin em and
I Love it!!!
McCain/Palin 08′

lol, secretary… no I’m not drinking….
For those that have any doubt the smears are coming from the Obama camp, this article in the American Thinker provides some insight:
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/08/obamas_bag_of_tricks.html
Obama trashed his primary opponent, Brent Hull, in the US Senate Race in Illinois when Hull’s sealed divorce records were “leaked” to the press.
Obama then went on to benefit from Jack Ryan dropping out of the general election when Ryan’s sealed divorce records were magically unsealed during the race.
Obama then used threats against super delegates to run opponents against them in their own primary elections if they supported Hillary Clinton.
And during this entire run of “coincidental serendipity” David Axelrod served as Obama’s campaign guru. Axelrod is a member of the MSM, having worked at the Chicago Tribune for 8 years before becoming Richard Daley’s “political consultant”.
And now Obama claims that coincidence has followed him once again, and he has nothing to do with the Palin smears? Think again.
While Obama continues to recoil at any inference of his involvement, the circumstantial evidence of his involvement is compelling; and overwhelming. Less weighty evidence of a circumstantial nature has been deemed to be conclusive “beyond a reasonable doubt” in criminal prosecutions. This may not be a court of law, but Obama is squarely within the court of public opinion. Where the standards of evidence, I might add, are not as stringent.
I don’t think he can throw Jann Wenner under the bus. Wenner’s head is too big.
Megyn Kelly called it. It was obvious from the beginning of the interview, by the reaction of the stooge, that the cover was designed to cause negative ideas about Palin to the casual observer. He could not defend the article, either. Always loved Megyn Kelly, now more than ever.
Michelle, I hope Sarah is an inspiration and a role model for you personally.
Obama’s “Fight the Smears” web server being used to uhhh… generate smears by hosting sarahpalingayrights.com. nslookup shows it’s on the same server located at http://74.208.74.232 however, they registerede the domain with Domains By Proxy, a company that hides the true registrant.
Reminiscent of the “that’s above my paygrade” comment. Do you smell that?
The smears are about to get worse. Check out the latest Rasmussen poll.
Obama will act and sound annoyed but the reality is that the mainstream media will carry his water by reporting virtually anything some leftist blogger says. I think it is time for Republicans to do what Gingrich did today and challenge the media directly. I am tired of Republicans trying to placate the media just to get a few precious minutes of air time. Go on the attack and combat the inherent unfairness. What is the media going to do – never have an interview with a Republican? Impossible!!!
Oh, by the way, I have analyzed US, the National Enquirer, and recent MSNBC information. Palin is clearly not from this planet – and her Down’s syndrome baby is actually a first attempt to make aliens look like Americans. Clearly, the baby has more intelligence than the average Democrat, but is not yet up to Republican standards. I will await the reports in the news media on this breaking news. The sad fact is that this is just the kind of thing that the news media is actually reporting. What a corrupt and biased bunch.
For as much time as Michelle has spent poring over the life of Michelle Obama, you’d think she would at least mention that Todd Palin was a member of the AIP for seven years, as recently as 2002.
I did not have sex with that woman.
Our campaign had nothing to do with the attack on Sarah.
Nobody gives a crap about that except for you and your fellow Obamunists. But keep whining about the VP candidate’s family. It shows how pathetic you are.
I don’t want to go off topic but is anyone else having trouble opening any topics? On internet explorer, I keep getting a security warning about opening files. I link to MM through a google homepage. I finally had to logoff and sign on using mozilla.
Obama’s personal history and even that of his wife have been deliberately hidden by the MSM. He has so many anti-American skeletons in his closet that he could form a very large boy scout troop from them. Oh, I forgot, the ACLU doesn’t like the boy scouts. Scratch than one.
The comments from liberal women are astounding. They are unable to mask their sheer bitterness and envy. For all the world, they are coming off as those catty popular high school or college girls and women whom exclude those they deem to be “uncool” or not otherwise up to their standards.
They can stick with their clique. For every one that meets their stardards for admission, there are thousands who know what it’s like to suffer their scorn and derision. Keep reminding people why you thought they were outcasts from your sorority.
So, is it ok to bring up past associations of candidates now? I thought talking about Obama’s relationship to Ayers and Soros was off limits.
Makes me think of a person saying they would never kill an animal as they are eating a hamburger.
Sure, they didn’t kill that cow themselves, someone else just did the dirty work for them.
Governor Palin’s speech was one of the most rousing I’ve heard in a long time. I kept thinking “Ronald Reagan would approve!”
We still have work to do and this election won’t be a cakewalk but McCain and Palin can win this now.
Liberals always overplay their hand and it back fires on them. This smear campaign is offensive to men as well as women and it will be their undoing.
You could telled Megyn was pissed off. And I liked the ‘Senior Editor’s’ response as she questioned him on each point of contention:
“Well, I don’t think we can talk about all of that here……” and
‘We were just writing about what everyone was talking about and we didnt have time to research very deep on each comment’
What office is TODD PALIN running for again? Do you even know what the AIP’s platform is?
We can ask the stores to remove the US magazines or at least place them out of sight, and let the managers know how offensive the magazine is to women and conservatives and sons and daughters. After being asked 50 times the manager is going to get the message.
Secondly, contact every company running an ad in the magazine and contact them.
Thirdly, call their competitors and get them on the bandwagon of attacking US magazine as trash.
Finally, talk to people in line in the stores as to how racist BO and sexist BO and his media followers are and how if elected, women are going to be trashed. Wonder out loud if he really is an extremist muslim who would take away all women’s rights. Old big ears needs to feel our pain.
Obama made the media an extension of his campaign. Now, that cozy relationship has come back to bite him.
I say, “Fair Game.”
Red State Septic, please find a new home.
Remind me again who is exactly running for PRESIDENT?!?! The libs are spending an awful lot of time on the VP slot. I guess its because some of them must realize Sarah Palin is a true threat to them in 2012.
Sarah palin should go on tv and tell obama that she better him and ask him to try to beat her at a hockey match. Then go hunting for kos kids.
As vulgar and nasty as the smears are we do know this: The leftist clowns are in full panic mode and this is a good thing.
And I am a memeber of the American Automobile Association but I am not running for office either.
Full Panic Mode is a good thing.
Sarah Palin is Senator Joseph McCarthy – except that the Republicans are backing her this time around.
Go Sarah !!
McCain / Palin 08
Here’s a snippet from Hussein’s email blast to his supporters:
gasp, and this…

Democrats assume the cozy relationship. It is an intrinsic part of the campaign and has been for decades. It becomes more and more obvious every four years. I remember conservatives complaining about media bias in the 80′s, and the lib reaction was feigned surprise and disbelief. That facade came off long ago. The denials stopped too.
Red State Septic and lgm and the rest are good for us.
Lets face it, the dems should be kicking our butts in a landslide but are not. This isn’t a good thing for obama.

Every time the lefty MSM bashes Bristol Palin, they are bashing Barack Obama’s mother. Idiots.
It appears Barack was conceived out of wedlock when his mother was 17.
We have not been shown an official birth certificate for Barack or an official marriage license for his parents, but from what we have been told, it appears that…
Barack was born August 4, 1961. Given a normal gestation period of 40 weeks, that would mean he was conceived around October 28, 1960. Barack’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was 17 years old at that time (she did not turn 18 until November 29, 1960).
So Barack’s mother was a lot like Bristol Palin.
Stanley Ann Dunham made the same choice that Bristol Palin is making (and that my sister made). We are told that Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Hussein Obama married on February 2, 1961. Barack Hussein Obama II was born 6 months later.
He took the name Barry Soetoro when his mother married her second husband, Lolo Soetoro, in 1967. He was registered as, and known as, Barry Soetoro when he attended school in the world’s most populous Muslim nation (Indonesia).
Good call.
Ah! I knew it! I knew there would be some snarky comment about her hair, and I was right. From today’s Drudgereport:
Oh for cryin’ out loud. I happen to like her hair thank you very much.
For the sake of argument let’s stipulate that it’s troubling her husband was a member of a nutty political party five years ago.
It is less troubling than someone being in bed politically and financially with terrorists, felons and professional racists to this very day. Far less.
So yeah, let’s have the discussion about guilt through association. Because just like the experience discussion it’s one your Messiah is going to lose.
We should stop calling Pat Buchanan a right-winger and call him by his true title: MSNBC Political analyst.

Good piece MM. However, I think we need to stay on this subject… The weasels will be most active NOW that they have an idea of the strength of SARAH PALIN… She scared the DAYLIGHTS out of them last night. I don’t think they will UNDERESTIMATE this HOCKEY MOM again… If they do, shame on them… This LADY showed me last night, she has more class in her little finger, than the whole B. HUSSEIN camp in their combined bodies… Stand behind this TICKET to the end, and we will have a true CONSERVATIVE elected in November… SARAH is, and will continue to be a STRONG CONSERVATIVE…
yes he does…look at all the people who are worshiping this empty shell of a candidate…he has done nothing other than campaign..and as far as running the campaign that just shows how incompetent he is…he can’t even control those that get him into trouble time after time…
When he said that, Uuuuuuhbama might as well have admitted they were behind it. When accused of something they didn’t do, people don’t say there’s no proof. That’s the dodge of the guilty. God knows, we heard it often enough from Billy Jeff.
This sort of B.S. is why many of America’s best and brightest don’t run for office. It’s one thing to examine a candidate’s policies; it’s another to just launch all-out smear attacks that get so personal.

What do you think of this Michelle?
Dude.
Please refresh me. Two decades ago…. wasn’t that when the Dems were in power in Illinois and the US Congress? And werent those still the Tip O’Neill days?
So I am thinking Obama was trying to change the Democrats failed policies in those days, not the GOP’s.
So as great of a community organizer and State Senator as Obama was, how is the South Side of Chicago doing these days?
A stylist? That’s a stretch if I ever saw one. Biden has hair plugs what does that say about him, hmmmmm – oh wise one??
Besides, I like her hair too!
Megyn Kelly is a terrific blend of brains and pit bull. The “editor” at US came off looking like a stuttering fool…kind of like his political financier when given a real question and no teleprompted hopechange speech.
Obama won’t fight for Palin, even when it would be morally right to do so.
We must fight for Palin, make no mistake about it.
OK here’s my one sexist comment
Can she change her eyewear to Librarian glasses for a couple of speeches? No one screws with a librarian either!
/sexist
(Nothing is wrong with her hair or her clothes or her shoes or her weight or her ‘anything else that doesnt matter’)
When are they going to start asking what designer suit Todd is wearing for his next public appearance?
“(Living) Babies, (unsubstantiated) lies and (manufactured) scandals” are all that Obama’s camp has in their anti-Palin arsenal? Sarah showed them last night that they will need more than that to stop her.
Smell the liberal fear..
It’s both toxic, and intoxicating.
Click on salonmariorusso.com and then choose “talent” to see what Mario’s hair looks like. It’s quite possible he combed it with a spoon for the picture. Is this not sexism? Why comment on the female candidate’s hair and not the three males?
“Obama’s hair looks like a circa 1995 NBA point guard”
“McCain needs Rogaine”
“Joe’s plugs are only Biden time until baldness wins the day”
Friggin’ ridiculous. Mario Russo. Who the hell cares what he has to say? I pay $10 for a cut at SportClips. There. I said it. I own it. I don’t do $400 John Edwards cuts.
Gov. Palin looks spectacular. Her greatness, unlike Samson, doesn’t reside in her hair, however. I watched the speech and heard the collective pants download on the left. Sarah will not be intimidated and will not stay silent. I love it. I’ll be popping a lot of popcorn this election season.
great point!
When their usual toxic bile becomes the only thing libs have left, you just know they’re ready to swallow their guns.
So that’s why they favor gun control! They can’t control themselves!
Like that’s news.
Oh please! You, Michelle Malkin, are the one that constantly promotes and invents many of the smears against Obama and it’s because of people like you that FightTheSmears.com was launched. Are you really brazen enough to say that the very person you’ve spent months and months smearing and discrediting ought to stand up against the smears of your candidate?
Note to Omu:
The difference between a “smear” and a “critique” is that a smear is an irrelevancy designed to camouflage the insecurity of the one doing the smearing.
A critique is a truth designed to contrast with other perspectives.
The psychiatrist will see you now.
I like that idea.
This paragraph in particular stuck out to me. Palin isn’t even running for President, but is only 5% behind the opposition guy who is?
It’s got to be killin’ them!
lmao!
Red State Septic and lgm and the rest are
good for uscomic relief.Fixed.
Soledad O’Brien is annoying the heck out of me over on CNN this morning….. but I cant seem to turn her off. She is sooooo in the tank against Mrs Palin. Either that or she is an Academy Award caliber actress, because she is definitely not masking her disdain.
I’m not a Carly Fiorina fan by an stretch of the imagination, but she and Candy Crowley are just shredding Soledad.
Here we go again. The latest from CBS News and The Enquirer:

McCain Camp Knocks Down Enquirer’s Palin Rumor
Posted by John Bentley| 205
(CBS)From CBS News’ John Bentley:
(ST. PAUL, MINN.) – John McCain’s campaign threatened legal action against the National Enquirer today for running a story about McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly having an affair with her husband’s business partner.
“The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt.
“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”
The Enquirer also alleges that Palin unjustly fired a public safety official while she was governor of Alaska, but the story is based entirely on unnamed sources. The Enquirer has also paid sources in the past to speak with them, something mainstream media outlets do not do.
“Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end,” said Schmidt.
“Legal action will be considered with regard to this disgraceful smear.”
Ooops… God shall not be mocked…
… and she wasn’t wearing a pantsuit… or a cocktail dress… oh my…
Ok, I want to thank BemusedLib, Chapoutier, nyk, Rusty, and some others of their ilk on this blog. I also want to thank the major news media and other biased, far left wing wackos.
Why?
I have decided to send some money to the McCain campaign. They are the ones that have spurred me on to do this with their despicable acts of smearing and/or brain dead logic.
I can’t really afford to do so at this time, but I am going to anyway. I believe that B Hussein Obama is a total fraud. He doesn’t belong anywhere near the presidency and is maybe the slimiest and most dangerous person to ever be put up by the Democrats…….AND THATS SAYING SOMETHING! AND thats also being very kind to Mr. Uhhhhhhhbama.
There, fixed it for ‘em.
Within 10 minutes after Palin’s speech, the talking-point libs were whining about how she was “snide” and “sarcastic”.
This, after days of psychotic character assasination heaped upon Palin by the very same crowd?!?!?!?
Victimhood is indeed inextricably and deeply buried within liberal DNA. It’s how they actually see the world.
FightThePalinSmears.com is on the job.
One of the many cool things about Sarah Palin is that she not only knows how to tend to infant children, but also adult crybabies!
Now wonder she’d driving libs beyond their usual boundaries of lunacy.
De-friggin’-licious!!!!!!!
Just goes to prove…repeat a lie long enough (2 years in this case) and people will believe it.
If it were Hillary, the left would proclaim how liberating for women all over the world that she has done this!
The best they can do is get some hairdresser to kvetch about her hair?
Obama, “community organizer” is not a real job. The South Side is still a gang-infested crap hole. Your community organizing skills consisted of wasting other people’s money and helping out your radical buddies with their money wasting pet projects.
Gloria Steinem, you’re as irrelevant as mood rings and EST. All you’ve done with yourself is play show feminist while you’ve hung off the arms of rich, powerful men. Something Sarah Palin has never done.
Self-perceived victim status is a psychological avoidance mechanism to dodge personal responsibility — which is one of the three gateways through which one must pass through on the way to becoming an intellectual and emotional adult.
The other two are sound judgment and emotional control.
Putting up Hopenchange as a presidential candidate gives a pretty good indication of where the donkeys’ level of judgment rests.
And their inability to govern their emotions, instead of being governed by them, is plain for all to see.
“And it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out in the old grown-up game…”
Here’s what the Alaska Indepdence Party has to say about the rumors associated with Sarah Palin.
**Alert: You are about to read a sexist, inappropriate comment by vickisoup**
Ahem….have you seen her hottie husband?? Of course she wouldn’t cheat. He’s still her guy (I loved that line).
Lawyerly parsing. Senator Obama can’t even accept that movement in an aborted fetus is a sign of life. How can he just take someone’s word for this?
Sorry to break this to the The One Who Has Come and His Flower Children and Activist of the Left Over Left BUT ordinary people ordinarily respond to a job loss by finding a job. It happens every day of every week of every year. We call it life.
It is a shame a man with a University degree can’t grasp that idea.

Hey Obama-Want to see Bitter?
Look at your wife.
Obama promises all the women of America that he will protect them from sexism but he is unable to protect this one woman from his own people.
Pitiful.
Really? I’ve never met a community organizer. I’ve seen them only on television. I don’t need anyone to tell my elected officials what I like or dislike about them or their actions; I vote or do not vote for them all by myself. I can also write a letter to any of them and I certainly expect a response. Of course, I’m not very urban. Maybe urban people can’t speak for themselves.
Just who are the “community organizers”?
Well, Jesse Jackson is a community organizer. Al Sharpton is a community organizer. ACORN is in the business of community organizing. We aren’t talking about the Rotary club here. Obama seems to have placed himself into some very distinct company with that self described function.
Good point. One could call the community “organized” by another, perhaps more accurate term, Special Interest Group.
As Ace wrote over at his blog a few days ago, “projection ain’t just a river in Egypt.”
Omu squealed:
Do you have a map & a list?
I didnt even know Gloria Steinem was still alive.
Didnt she march with Susan B Anthony? And what, isn’t she like 90 or something?
As Dimsdale points out, the above quote is not a denial. It’s just a slicker way of saying “you can’t prove that.”
BTW, “community organizer” is just a fancy way of saying “activist”.
It has become as obvious as Joe Biden’s hair plugs that the attacks on Sarah Palin’s character are because of the left’s unmitigated disdain for her. Why such animosity? First, she’s not the prissy, submissive, seen-but-not-heard female that they had hoped. And second, she doesn’t subscribe to the woe is me, womanhood is a burden, feminists unite crap typical of the loony left.
She is a traditionalist and, boy does that grind the femi-nazi’s gears. She juggles her duties as a governor with a complicated home life and does it with a glint in her eye. She has accomplished more at the age of 44 than your run-of-the-mill feminist kook could accomplish in 2 lifetimes.
Do you really think that trumps Senator Obama’s admitted cocaine use? I’m just asking.
