last night while we were watching mccain's speech my husband said, "i haven't seen one person that's not white." i hadn't noticed, and then remembered how many african americans i had seen the night before. i looked up at the channel and it was cbs, the night before we had been watching fox. i don't know if fox was showing the same people over and over again, or if cbs made it a point to only show white people, but i thought it was funny.

I pointed out to a race-card-democrat who said that all of McCain's crowds are always so white, that not every ethnicity is so dark skinned that they will pop out in a crowd. There are plenty of dark skinned ethnicities at his rallies, but there are also plenty of people with lighter skin who might have African blood, Asian blood, Latino blood, Arab blood, and so on and so on. It's a farce and downright stupid to claim that McCain's crowds are all white.

A few people here have mentioned the Civil Rights Act. Now, I cannot remember the title, but there is a book written by Secret Service members about Presidents from Johnson through to Clinton. The book is unbiased, I believe, because it talks about everything from the President's personal habits to thier children. Like how much they hated Michael Reagan, but liked Chelsea Clinton as an example.

If I find the title, I will give it, but some of you need to read what Johnson said before he signed the Civil Rights Act. I could not believe it, it was degrading and I believe shows the true nature of the Democrat Party. I would never repeat something as sick as that. It was akin to this bill will keep those people (he used the n word) voting Democrat for the next one hundred years.

How nice for you! I'm also of Irish and French decent. I'm a proud American first and foremost. Proud to be Irish too, French, not so much. My point was that too many people identify with the hyphen country first, to the denigration of America. How about calling yourself an American first? Try it, you might like it.

Where is Barb Davis White & is she supported by the RNC? Michael Steele represented on the Warren Ballentine show & defended Palin. Many listeners of Tom Joyner & Warren can't get over 'the crowd looking like a klan meeting & not like America' to even consider its platform.

Your moral high ground is actually a rut devoid of any critical understanding of things *not white*.

Not quite. I think as a person of color I have a very fundamental understanding of things *not white.* But thanks for your input! I'll pass it along! To my garbage can.

Your argument assumes that all blacks (!) are dependent on welfare program and ignores the fact that even middle- and upper-class African Americans vote Dem.

That's kind of the norm here. Most African-Americans I know are either middle class or upper middle class. They vote Democrat. My point was, there's a reason. And I pretty much see it spelled out in black and white (literally and figuratively) here every day.

Well, if you want to know why African Americans don’t vote Republican, you don’t have to look any further than your own contemptible writing.

Exactly.

BemusedLib, thanks for fighting the good fight. I'm at the point where I feel like it's almost useless to try to have a genuine exchange of ideas here. But I admire your tenacity.

Ulthwithian, it's late and I just got home, and I'm tired, but I hope to see you here again. We can debate (politely and respectfully) another day.

There's no particular mystery about why blacks vote D. Your party bought their votes with cold hard cash.

I'm not sure why people like to pretend that "liberal Republicans" equals "libertarians". McMoron, Specter, Lott, Rove, Lindsey, etc etc are all liberal Republicans. They don't have a single libertarian bone in their entire bodies.

Conservatives and libertarians have a lot more in common with each other than either has with those scum-sucking liberals.

Nyk, I think you have some interesting points, if somewhat overstated.

I consider the current Democratic party line towards African-Americans and other minorities to be nearly identical to the post-Civil War Radical Republican administration (40 acres and a mule, anyone). The RRs that took control of the party over Lincoln's assassination wanted to punish the south for its war. (Note: I am not discussing the war, itself.) They rushed in and promised to take away from their recent owners and give to the freed slaves... and, of course, quid pro quo, gain their votes.

The Democratic party uses Welfare-style programs to do the same for minorities and others 'disenfranchised'.

Really, the historical perspective actually favors the current state of affairs, in that the African-American community can point to the cynical manipulation of them by the Republicans in the postbellum period as a reason not to trust them.

If anything, I think the historical issues are in fact reversed. As for the current situation... neither party is willing to change the status quo of entitlements. As the Party who is socially interventionist in the marketplace, the Democratic party is the natural earner of any merit this gains. A party with a platform of fiscal restraint should be reducing or eliminating these programs, as this would drastically reduce the tax burden on everyone in America, and give a very healthy incentive for people to live the American Dream.

Unfortunately, one party has nothing to gain by doing this, and the other party has 'everything to lose'.

Colin Powell is African American. Condi Rice is African American. Al Sharpton is African American.

First of all, I'm sick and tired of the idiotic hyphenation of everybody. You're either American or your not. As my Uncle Teddy Roosevelt would say, you can't be a partime Amercian. It's all or nothing. I think think it's about time to drop the hyphens. If you want a hyphen so bad, then go back to the old country and walk around calling yourself an American-African or American-Italian, or American-Lebonese. How stupid would that be? For crying out loud! Man up and become a citizen of the United states of America, or shut up, get on the boat, and go the f home! Other than that, I have no strong feelings.
