Not again: Palin “slashes” another children’s program…by increasing funding; Update: Washington Monthly retracts, what about the rest of the MSM?
Scroll down for updates…
The Kossified media strikes again.
In the wee hours of the morning yesterday, I told you about the Washington Post’s false accusation that Gov. Sarah Palin “slashed” funding for a teen pregnancy program, when in reality, there was “over a threefold increase from the government funds they received from all sources in 2006 (FY2006 ending 12/31/06).”
Many of you have contacted the WaPo ombudsperson about the lie. But she is apparently on vacation until next week. Keep after it — because the meme is spreading. The NYTimes has now recycled WaPo’s nonsense with this apoplectic headline: “Palin’s Budget Cuts Affect Teenage Mothers.”
And now, via Brian Faughnan, there’s this new smear using liberal math to decry Palin’s alleged “slashing” of special-needs funds. They’re so screamingly desperate:
I just watched CNN’s Soledad O’Brien sandbag former White House Communications Director Nicole Wallace by asking her how Sarah Palin can claim to be a defender of special needs children when she cut the budget for that Alaska office by 62 percent. Wallace wasn’t familiar with the charge — which isn’t surprising, since it’s only being made on DailyKos and another liberal site. (Tip for Ms. O’Brien: DailyKos is not a reliable news site.)
This charge is based on looking at the budget for Alaska’s Special Education Service Agency for 2007-2009. In fact, the December 2006 budget document that they cite would have been prepared by the outgoing administration — that of Republican Frank Murkowski, whom Palin defeated.
What’s gone unmentioned is that the Palin signed into law a dramatic reform of the state’s education financing system that equalizes aid to rural and urban districts, while significantly increasing funding for special needs students.
Keep it going, Palin-bashers. You’re doing a fantastic job:
Rasmussen Poll: 51 percent say reporters are trying to hurt Palin
***
From reader Kim:
There’s more to the story than an honest mistake by CBS.
In FY 07, before Palin worked on the budget, the state of Alaska had four distinct programs funded under it’s special education management budget: something called SESA, a psychiatric program, a school for the deaf, and the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy. In FY 08, the first Palin year, the first three programs – SESA, the psychiatric program, and the school for the deaf – were still in the special education management budget and their funding was approximately the same as it was in FY 07. But the Alaska Challenge Youth Program isn’t listed and it’s omission accounts for what appears to be a huge drop in funding for special education services.
I wondered why the program was dropped and googled the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy. Guess what? In FY 08 the academy was moved out of special education management and became it’s own program. And it’s funding was increased by about $2.8 million (to $8,234,000 in FY 08from $5,449,300 in FY07). Here’s a link to the program’s FY 08 budget http://gov.state.ak.us/omb/08_OMB/bu…D/comp2837.pdf
CBS, CNN and the other reporters could have discovered this had they simply read the 5, yes 5, page reports. It took me all of 30 second to discover this, and I’m as at home Mom with nothing but google to help me.
Have a great day !
Kim
And from blogger Parentalcation, who Googled for 45 seconds before discovering this from a Washington Monthly writer who spread the meme:
A commenter (Jim Syar) accused Sarah Palin of reducing the special education budget by 62%. That is false. The special education budget actually increased by nearly 12%, as explained below.
As Syar correctly notes, the Alaska 2007 budget for special education was $8,265,300. But that included $5,352,000 for the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy.
In the 2009 budgetary document to which Syar links, astute observers will note that there is no mention of the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy. Instead, you have to look elsewhere. And guess what: There is now a specific document providing $6,082,100 for the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy. (Link) So combined with the $3,156,000 that Syar notes, the total is $9,238,100. A nearly 12% INCREASE, not a 62% decrease.

The Washington Monthly has retracted the accusation and regrets the error.
What about the rest of the MSM continuing to spread the meme?

Al Gore continues to teach math along with glo-bull warming science.
They’ll never allow the truth the get in the way of the fairy tale that is Obama.
What a bunch of idiots! Are they seriously going to Kos for a factcheck?!?
Darn – I thought LGM was the math teacher
Yes, it is truly Kabuki-theatre level now.
Another example of a Fuzzy Math practitioner’s expert skills.
Only 51% in the Rasmussen poll thought reporters were out to hurt Palin?
Who’d they poll DU and KOS?
Old tactic. Call a cut in growth a spending cut. Unless its on Defence. Then its still an increase.
Beat me to it ConservativesRus. It’s teachers like LGM that teaches bad math.
Rusty is spouting off about this very topic on another thread. He gets the Kos points and just runs away with them. Its kind of funny and yet very sad.
I hope she did slash funding for aid to pregnent teens.
Quit spending my tax money to take care of other people’s children.
Get an education, get a job, get insurance and get off my back!
Taking a cue from Biden, I’ll plagerize myself from the referenced parallel post:
And it wasn’t just the late night entertainment shows – “Meet the Press”, etc., all failed to challenge the Dems to present actual NUMBERS showing a “cut”. And I don’t recall any effective counter by Republicans. Leno and Letterman just amplify the ‘conventional wisdom’ of the mass TV market.
I’m waiting on Palin’s next speech where she beats on liberal bloggers and their deliberate distortion of the truth.
The Dems have used opponents’ “slashing” to disguise their support for huge, annual increases in government spending for decades. Like all their other tripe, it fools some people so they keep it up.
You know, lefties, there’s a reason why our attacks against the Obama stick and yours against Palin fail. It’s because our attacks are based on facts.
this is how I sum up the two conventions thus far:
Dem- We did it, but you can’t do it without us.
Rep- We did it and so can you.
The Dems and MSM (one in the same I know) want to prove that there is no way Palin could have achieved what she has on her own. Not in their America.
Well, that & because stink sticks to poo poo, Socky.
Is that without leaners included?
I hear Sarah Palin did her speech with bad teleprompter problems. Simply. Amazing.
My response to this is: “Competence is the only system on morals set to the gold standard and Palin is gold.”
once again, the lefties have shown us just how well the did in math. just another sign that policies like obamitler’s for education smell of absolute failure for this country’s children. sort of like giving a school 200,000 for Junteenth and 0 dollars for algebra. we know where the lefties priorities are and we all know they cannot understand how budget(s) or accounting work.
and they’re still whining!!
unbelievable the bitterness that has carried over from them after the Disappointing speech at Invesco and Obama’s poor, poor choice of VP’s, or is it his staggeringly lame performance at saddleeback that awakened them to the FACT their candidate is not “the one” as advertised.
It’s Killin em and
I Love it!!!
McCain/Palin 08′
Image: Dems at the end of their rope. pathetic.
“Competence is the only system of morals set to the gold standard and Palin is that standard.”
OK, here’s my crumpled final draft.
the notion that increased government spending equals compassion and caring must be refuted.
this is a replay of the 1980s, when they said the same thing about reagan. I wish they would cut spending, not just a cut in the projected increase.
In a way, they’re right. In “their” America, no one achieves ANYTHING without help from the state. Glad I don’t live in “their America.”
Rusty was in another thread citing this same rubbish. Come on Rusty, where are you now? Facts? Dems don’t need facts when hysteria will do.
CNN and MCNBC are losing any right to claim that they are “news” organizations. Facts, it seems, are of little concern.
What is that old news adage? You are entitled to your own views, but not your own facts.
I would say they should be utterly embarrased, but frankly, they’re so blinded in their subjectivity that they are way beyond shame.
This is the most amazing thing I have witnessed in my life. How can these people call themselves journalists when all they seem to do is pass on talking points from direputable sources?
It’s absolutely discourging to hear and see how utterly dishonest the media is.
It’s a good thing I ate but it isn’t sitting well.
With respect to the Rasmussen Poll, what percent disagreed that the media are trying to hurt Gov. Palin and what percent were undecided or didn’t have enough information to form an opinion?
That is old math anyway. Get ready for a whole new curriculum.
Mathematics will be replaced by Barakamatics. Economics with Obanomics. The One will give you change he can deceive in….
Soledad O’Brien…….. I have always been stunned someone that stupid was allowed in front of a camera.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion but everybody is NOT entitled to their own facts. Not that the MSM has ever been concerned with FACTS.
Jim M. said:
I was in Brooklyn over the weekend and visiting a Russian deli on 86th for a few items. How does it make you all feel when you see able bodies people using EBT (modern day food stamps) cards to buy food knowing this is your tax money simply buying a vote in the next election cycle?
Barakamatics = Soft Marxism & neo-John Stuart Mill
I know an actual network “journalist”. You have summed up the profession (IMO).
It’s not truth, it’s truthy!
flyover, meet Larry King
Can we change the ticket to:
Palin/McCain ‘O8
Palin/Jindal would be better but McCain is not going away no matter the odds from Vegas.
I would like to volunteer for Mrs Palin to “slash” my salary and benefits.
Palin/McCain ‘O8
Big winner Big time.
Fixed it for you 30, don’t have to do that very often.
Actually, I would prefer a Palin/Malkin ’08 ticket. We need a real Mensch in office after 8 years of Bush.
The front page of Yahoo! was funny this morning… must of been 3-4 anti-Palin stories.
I think she did a great job, was very impressed. Great public speaker.
Soledad has the mental equivalency of a box of rocks. I think most in the media discount her journalistic qualifications. That being said, the McCain campaign needs to respond hard to this slam!
What the heck is a teen pregnancy program? Why is the government funding teen pregnancy programs?
I guess I’m a conservative with no compassion.
Biden pointed out today that she didn’t mention health care, the econmy and the wars in her speech. She is saving that for you in the debates, you knob! We will see which side has a plan ! Biden got a tiger by the tail..I can hear the double tongue and back step now!
Props to sausage again, that’s twice in a week.

Maybe our money goes to fund this wonderful daycare center for all those girls getting pregnant because their friends are doing it.
High five!
In the turbulence of the sixties, Soledad Prison riots, Soledad Brothers Gang-Black and Latino- and mainstreaming of the Mexican Mafia, La Nuestra Familia and other “Latino” (but not coconut) prison gangs. Fortunately for us these gangs were not able to maintain their UNITY (a name they borrowed from UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc.)

Basically the little [insert insult here] comes from left wing clowns and carries on the family tradition. Por la raza todo. (Honkies not welcome)
This is an excellent point, right4life.
Even if this latest *fact* were true, which it evidently is not, it is a fallacy that more money equals more access to success.
Libs just don’t get it, though. The only thing they understand is taking more money from the American people.
*
On another note, contrary to Biden’s latest bloviating, Sarah did mention the war. She talked about her son deploying next week to Iraq and wanting a strong Commander in Chief as would be found in McCain, and offered her personal understanding of the needs of gold-star families. Was it she, or was it Giuliani, that noted that whenever Obama talks about the war, he never mentions the word “victory”?
Hate to speak off point…but Huckabee said this today.
Funny. Thought I would share it.
SCREW’EM, They know that they’re on a sinking ship. The S.S. Hopeandchange got torpedoed last night.
Just look at big city schools. The libs whine for more and more money while nothing changes (or gets worse).
I gotta admit that I never cared much for Huckabee, but he hit the nail on the head with that one. They need to make an ad with that quote.
Thanks RR!
I was thinking that, too. Wonder what speech Biden was listening to?
I think that was her line. GO PALIN!
very true, it gives the more power, which is what its all about. the libs don’t care for the people they supposedly help. all they do is keep people in a state of perpetual dependence so they’ll vote democratic to keep the checks coming.
True. The “OMG, that she-fiend is cutting a program for teenage moms!” bilge is only meant for a friendly (i.e., donkey) audience, however, because it’s highly effective on people who only read the headlines and believe whatever they’re told.
What happened to teens who become pregnant before government programs. Really. We didn’t see civilization collapse.
Why is is “unwed mother” when they refer to Bristol Palin, and “single moms” when they talk entitlements?
Hmmmm.
Gee, Family Man, didn’t you see, “Cider House Rules”, that supposed “love story” starring Michael Caine, Charlize Theron and Tobey Macguire? /sarc off
If you didn’t, be glad, because it was a horrible movie that heralded abortion while trying to disguise itself as a boy’s “coming of age” movie. Disgusting.
Sorry….I kind of went off.
You know, as a former teacher, I’ve found it striking some of the concerns that the libs have for our children:
1. Making children more “accepting” and “aware” that mommies/mommies and daddies/daddies are just as special, if not more so, than mommies/daddies.
2. It’s okay if you’re a welfare cheat. We’ll keep rewarding you for being promiscuous and having lots of babies.
3. Being promiscuous isn’t wrong. You don’t have to take responsibility for your actions. Just kill your baby and be done with it.
4. Indoctrinating our kids with useless tidbits to pass standardized tests and keep tenured teachers on the union rolls is the way to go.
5. Undermining parents and how they want to guide their children through cheepening the educational experience and culture and not actually preparing kids for the future (such as being adept at the economy and not falling for the same class warfare scam) makes for more useful Obummer supporters.
6. Trying to shut down avenues of competition like homeschooling and vouchers because graduating less than 60% of high school students that will be the future welfare deadbeats is the best way to address our educational woes.
7. Liberals respect children so much that when they’re “inconvenient” or “not wanted” they’re deemed “subhuman” and to be gotten rid of. Babies are dehumanized if they’re only in the first trimester. Heck, whatever trimester. They’re dehumanized if they’re inconvenient because mommy doesn’t want a “reminder” of her “mistake” or if they’re imperfect or have something “horrible” like Downs Syndrome.
Yes, I see. It’s all for the children. That one fit, one indoctrination is really churning out the liberal-minded, ill-educated, dependent American citizen ready for a handout of some of your/my money.
Yep, liberals care about the children as long as they’re being indoctrinated to be good little Dembots. I get it.
You’re allowed to do that here…it’s for a good cause.
Thanks, PB.
This is an old mind trick of the propaganda merchants in the Liberal Dominated Media.
Solodad Obrien, is one of the most ardent supporters of B.O. in the media. Doesn’t surprise me that she was tasked with posing bogus reporting on a republican candidate.
I truly believe nothing I see on CNN… Nothing!! CNN has absolutely zero credibility!
navywife91 at #45,
Thanks for the link. What a worthy cause at which to throw our tax dollars!
High five back atcha!
Mr. flyoverman, meet “diversity.” That is the only possible way a nitwit like O’Brian could get a job.
Can we draw that special line someplace such as mommies/mommies/duck or daddies/daddies/ squirrel or daddie/duck/daddie/mommy/iguana
Well worth sharing sambo. But as BroBama was only casually acquainted with William Ayres we should share it only once a day between now and the election.
Once a day, every day, all day long to quote Connie Smith.
I guess the media and these “bloggers” at the daily kos seem to have failed simple grade school arithmetic and haven’t paid enough attention to government budgets to even understand basics like when a fiscal year begins and ends and who makes budgets during the fiscal year.
Pity, maybe the poor ignorant fools should attend remedial courses, possibly for “special needs” children. Their obvious lack of basic skills and general behaviors definitely put them in a “special needs” category if ever anyone did.
I am still trying to determine why, as Republicans, we should be happy that she did not cut the spending, and in fact, tripled it. (Please don’t tell me that it is because it’s for the children.)
It was for the children.
Speaking of misleading headlines, Is this an innocent story-placement accident, or front-page editorializing?
MarcoPolo
Ditto!!!
Ha Ha… Very true.
She’s obviously female, but also Irish, Black, and Hispanic. All in one little package. She’s single handedly capable of filling several affirmative action quotas for CNN!
And until last Friday, I was still hoping Hillary would do something to upset the dems. The implosion Sarah Palin is causing is so much more spectacular!
had to read that twice…I couldn’t help but think Barry O
Screw Toronto.
I knew it was a killer speech, but this is just nuts.
Really folks. Can anyone point to any socially engineered government program that has ever helped our conservative culture?
She is even attractive in unflattering pics.
Marco, as a Republican, I’m OK with limited increased spending for an increased awareness of a problem, or an increased need that has been identified, provided there is appropriate oversight and accountability. I’m not OK with increased spending if it throws money at a problem that should not be funded in the first place, or for which it is already adequately or overfunded.
Preachin’ to the choir, man.
Nice one Huck.
You know, sambo, since Barry-O is ardent in his favor of abortions, he may just aspire to the depths reached by Homer in that movie and hope to change careers for himself.
Lord have mercy.
You could’ve ended it at the word “helped” and still have gotten pretty much the same answer.
Yeah, we saw it begin to collapse afterward.
I was adopted at birth from an unwed teenage bio-mother back in the early 50′s when abortion was illegal. I don’t know how many more there are like me but I’m reasonably certain that, had I been conceived post Roe v Wade, I probably wouldn’t be here to speak up for the 40+ million of my slain brothers and sisters who weren’t allowed to be born and come here with me to place comments on Michelle’s web site. I’m completely certain though that they’re all cheering for Sarah Palin.
fixed it for you – sorry but I’d like to know
Where is rusty and lgm? They need to try to defend these acts of this terrible woman.
troll troll troll your boat
OMG! You mean Gov. Palin is such an evil person that she is slashing the very thing her own daughter needs? What a heartless woman! Oh if only she had not stuck her daughter in a room for days until she agreed to actually have the child and did not remove her “choice”. Woe to all I say…WOE! WOE!
Silly…school doesn’t get out for another 20 minutes. Then there is the bus…after school activities…homework…
Don’t you mean pre-school? They’re on their cookies and milk break.
On another note…37 million people watched last night.
They just posted at HotAir that Obama’s “Historic Speech” got 38 million.
Is that correct? If so, that’s hilarious.
Is that real?
PB do you know what Biden got?
This is hilarious. The Republican VP pick gets almost as many viewers. Then again, I heard this in PMSNBC (yes, my husband put it on again this morning). The numbers could be higher.
Yes, FamilyMan, it is for real — just a few minutes ago.
Keep the smears without substance going and we will see a landslide at the polls. I still have faith in the American public to see through this B.S.!
They are playing right into our hands. BWA-HA-HA! (evil laugh)
On September 4th, 2008 at 2:42 pm,
HEY!!!!
Chris Matthews saw those figures and felt a tingle go down his leg… from wetting himself.
I’ve got that tingly feeling again
Hold on, so did Palin increase taxpayer funds to these programs or decrease it? When I heard she slashed funds for pregnant mothers, I was really impressed with her, now I learn she increased it three fold? Weak…
How do we send a thank you note to Obama, Howard Dean, and the MSM for causing so many people to tune in to Sarah’s speech? Or maybe John and Sarah can extend our thanks to them on November 5!
She decreased spending to the teen mother program but moved some funds to other programs. Adjusting for inflation is not shown. Is that clear. Me neither.
