One more thing about that “someone wrote the speech for her” insult

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 4, 2008 10:25 AM

I noted the condescending comment from several talking heads last night who kept stressing that Gov. Palin’s speech was written for her. (Link.) These dumpers presume to know how much input Gov. Palin had in the crafting of the speech. They presume she sat in another room while the men did all the work for her. But no Beltway speechwriter came up with her pit bull/hockey mom crack — one of the funniest of the night. And no Beltway speechwriter imbued her with the poise, humor, experience, grace, and savvy that made that speech a smashing success.

And one more thing: Perhaps in deriding Palin’s speech-written speech, the dumpers should see fit to mention that at least her speechwriters didn’t plagiarize.

***

Commenter Socky: “The real irony is that the Obama campaign sent out a talking point to criticize the speech as being written by someone else, and his obedient sheep in the media repeated the talking point. So, they were complaining about her giving speech that was written for her by reciting a talking point that was written for them.”

Mark Levin weighs in:

I have never been a fan of speech-writers who reveal themselves. It is demeaning to the person for whom they work and, frankly, a betrayal of an unspoken code of ethics. And I don’t think it helps the speech-writer who wants to remain anonymous for others to reveal him. Speech-writing and speech-giving are a collaborative process. But the words are only part of it. Whether the speech is successful and has a broad appeal requires more than clever wording. A great speech in the hands of a poor orator is an announcement. Middling language in the hands of a greater orator can be a timeless oration. A great speech requires superior communication skills, including emoting and pacing and connecting. These are things that speech-writers cannot accomplish. And the speaker has to mean the words and defend them and stand by them. It is odd and disquieting that more and more speech-writers, on their own or others on their behalf, seem to claim ownership of their boss’s message. There’s just something unseemly about it to me — credit taken for the Challenger speech, “the axis of evil,” etc., etc. When the words come out of the speaker’s mouth, they belong to the speaker. I notice speech-writers don’t take credit for bad speeches.

Tou-che.

Even if she didn’t write it, as much as any speech I’ve heard she sounded like she was speaking her own words. I got no sense she was even reading it. She could just as well have memorized it, or even be speaking extemporaneously, as far as I could tell. That’s a real mark of an integrated character — her thoughts, words, feelings, and actions all in sync with each other. No duplicity, manipulation, or hidden motive. She comes across as the real deal. If she’s faking that, good for her! :)

The trolls will repeat the talking point that Obama’s speech was heard by 40 million people. Well, 120 million people voted in the last election. Obama got a three point bounce out of the convention. Not a 30% bounce, which one would expect if his speech had won over forty million people.

So, he was either preaching to the choir, or twenty million people turned to the other twenty million and said. “That’s it? That’s what the hype was about? I haven’t been this disappointed since Matrix Revolutions.”

As someone who has given a lot speeches in my life, I can tell you that Palin could not have done such a great job if she was a non-participant in writing the speech. Further, the fact that she was able to keep going without missing a beat when the teleprompter somehow misfunctioned (Where is the investigation please?) shows just how much of an input she had to the speech. This woman is no talking head that you just dump information into it – quite unlike Obama.

And that’s not hearsay; I live in Massachusetts (yes, there are conservatives in the Bog State – do we qualify for the endangered species list?), so was subjected to Patrick’s Together We Can and Change of Direction mantras during his gubernatorial campaign, and endured all the speechifying.

Joe Biden was nationally vetted in 1988 and proven to be both a plagiarist (in law school and on the campaign trail) and a liar (his repeated lies about being at the top of his class and receiving more than one undergraduate degree.) For these violations of basic trust and character, he was forced to step down and cancel his Presidential aspirations.

Twenty years later, Barack Obama vetted the same Joe Biden and obviously found his history of proven lies and plagiarism to be acceptable within the overall selection for someone who could be but “one heartbeat away from the US Presidency.”

Why do Democrats find Biden’s traits of bad character and poor judgment acceptable today when they rejected them twenty years ago? Is this a product of a poor vetting process on Obama’s part, or is it problematic of a drop in standards on the part of today’s Democrat Party as a whole?

The issue is not who drafts the words but whether or not the speaker is being honest in speaking those words to us.

And who presents themselves as the most honest speaker out of these four? It isn’t Biden, that’s for sure. Obama and McCain have their own issues with respect to being perceived and genuine.

So the only one left who’s character hasn’t been completely smeared or assassinated in some way by the freak free press is Palin. But what they have dug up on Palin over the past couple days has just made her appear more normal to the voters, more genuine, and more honest.

Ironically, the dishonesty of the media hacks is reflecting how honest Palin really is.

didn’t notice anyone mention that FDR had speech writers; Truman and Kennedy had speech writers, that Reagan had speech writers.

And much of Reagan’s most memorable words were his own. Remember he had to fight his own administration to keep the words “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” But he had earned the right to say this after a lifetime of fighting communism, and he knew it. Brilliant leader and orator.

Sarah could very well become a female Ronald Reagan, if she keeps this up.

What I found surprising was even a couple of the talking heads on FOX were also strangely remarking about the “She didn’t write her speech” meme like it was some kind of profound revelation before Brit Hume reeled them in.

The debates will tell, especially if the questions aren’t pre-released. Without a teleprompter Hopenchange will fold up like a house of cards in a hurricane (witness his eight-question press conference before he stalked off in a huff and his last disastrous debate against Hillary), and Biden won’t have anything say if he can’t steal someone else’s words.

McCain’s ability to handle unscripted moments is already known (which is why “anytime, anywhere” Obama doesn’t dare engage him in a townhall format), and after seeing her speak for the first time last night I have much more confidence in Palin’s ability to mop the floor with the plagiarizer.

As John Kerry said in 2004, “Bring It On!” The debates should give a good impression of how much fun it was for the Romans to watch unarmed convicts taking on lions and bears in the arena.

Palin of inexperience, was he not again taking his own weaknesses and transfering them to his opponent?

once again, we surely know that Obama can’t right anything but his autobiography; and I am not so sure he was the sole writer on those two endeavors, either!

Note the singular. He’s said nothing different to anyone in any of his speeches. A trained baboon could write (or at least sign) “hope change” and “yes we can.” That’s all I’ve heard from him since he inadvertently became the democratic nominee.

He’s like season one of “24.” They got past episode six and realized people were actually watching–so they went back to the “Jack Bauer’s wife gets kidnapped” well…again.

Some other good news from this morning:

I noticed on Morning Joe that there were some liberal women commentators who were giving Palin (muted) praise. These were the same women that, until now, had been tearing into Palin.

However, this morning, something was different. I got the impression that their praise was muted, not because they weren’t impressed by Palin, but because they really liked Palin and were trying to avoid the scorn of their liberal peers.

These (liberal) women really identified with Palin in a way that I don’t think most men can even recognize. She was one of them. I think there are a lot of women out there who are going to go into the privacy of that voting booth, whisper “You go girl”, and pull the lever for McCain/Palin.

You’ve heard of the Bradley effect. Well, I think after this election, there will be a new phrase coined – the Palin effect. Don’t believe the polls. Republicans will win both the man & woman vote this year.

Watching Sarah Palin eviscerate the entire Democratic Platform in that speech brough back those “Reagan moments” like deja-vu!

BTW- This speechwriter wrote for G.W. Bush??!??! What the hell is wrong with Bush’s oratory talents that he couldn’t take what this obviously-talented writer put to paper and use it to the same devastating effet as Gov. Sarah Palin?
