Boycott Us Weekly: 10,000 and counting? Update: Cancellation notice added
Scroll down for updates…a reader sends her cancellation notice and the rag’s response…

On Sep. 2, I blogged Us Weekly’s partisan hit job on the Palin family. The smear issue hits the stands today. The outrage has spread. And Obama-worshipping publisher Jann Wenner and his minions are feeling the heat.
Three celebrity weeklies — OK!, People and Us Weekly — featured Sarah Palin on their cover, but one of those magazines is reportedly losing subscribers because of it.
Us Weekly, which unlike People and OK!, chose a rather caustic cover line (“Babies, Lies and Scandal”) is said to have lost thousands of subscribers in just the first 24 hours following the printing of the issue.
“I’m hearing it’s 5,000, maybe more,” says one well-placed source in the industry. Another source claimed that as many as 10,000 readers have already cancelled their subscriptions. A spokesperson for Wenner Media, which publishes Us, says “it is completely false that we are losing 10,000 subscribers.” As for the 5,000 estimate, the spokesperson only said “that is false, too,” but wouldn’t comment further.
Keep it up:
“When Us went to print Monday night, it looked like the ticket was falling apart,” says one magazine editor. “They went to print thinking Palin was dead in the water, and their mistake was thinking everyone who reads Us is a Democrat, when they’re not. Readers are loyal, but the base of a political party is more loyal. They don’t need to read the magazine when there’s so much press around it to know to be upset.”
Upset might be an understatement: One Us advertiser has admitted that they’ve received calls from angry former subscribers threatening to boycott their products. “(Us publisher) Jann Wenner supports Obama, Wenner media decided to follow the buzz around Palin before her speech, and now subscribers feel like a vote has been cast on their behalf,” says another magazine editor. “It’s going to be tough to bounce back from this one. Especially if the advertisers get involved. If they get nervous, that can hurt all of us.”
A reader e-mails about a new Boycott Us Weekly website.

Update: From a reader…
Michelle, It sure would be nice if US Weekly would say more in response than “sorry for any inconvenience!” How insulting to me that they don’t even acknowledge the controversy. I better get my money back…”

It’ll be hard to boycott/cancel my subscription when I don’t buy it anyway…but I’ll try.
Their interview on Fox yesterday couldn’t have helped either. Kelley just trashed that guy.
I’ve never picked up US Weekly. But I am loving the fight back.
Hahaha. Sweet. I love it when a Palin comes together.
They should have to pull it from the news stands!
I still love the way Megan Kelly took their editor apart. Someone suggested Megan should interview Obama instead of O’Reilly. Let him try to dodge the questions with her!
I would, on occasion, head on over to the US website. I like to look at pictures for fashion ideas. (I see what others do and find it cheaper!) I never paid attention to the magazine itself or its headlines. (Not into gossip.) However, I will no longer visit their site. I guess I will have to get some of my fashion ideas elsewhere.
The funny thing is that US did not see this coming. They had no idea their mean spirited cover would affect people so negatively. It just goes to show that a lot of people in this country are completely out of touch with the average American.
Well duh! Would the world really be at loss if one more celebramagazine just went under? Don’t just boycott the magazine…more important boycott the advertisers- that is where it really hurts.
Stupidity has consequences. Willful and malicious stupidity especially.
I suggest avoiding grocery stores, or at least the grocery lines that display it. Other than the back of a toilet that’s the only place I’ve ever seen Us.
That quote sounds like the ending line George Peppard uttered after all the episodes of the “A-Team”
“I love it when a plan comes together”
Both 5,000 and 10,000 are completely false, I’m sure.
It’s probably in the 12 to 15 thousand range. Assuming that many actually subscribe to this saddle-stitched glossy bird cage liner.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
All those magazines pander to the stupid. Newsweek, Time, Us, People…etc.
Stupid, uneducated people are more likely to be democrats standing in the checkout line waiting to spend MY tax money, prone to waste their welfare check on impulse buying…nuff said.
Why do media hacks always think their readers/listeners/viewers/subscribers/etc. think exactly the way they do?
It’s not like the last eight or ten times their candidate ran for President, they won by a popular majority, like Pres. Bush did in 2004. Even with all the help the msm showered on Clinton, he never did.
Yup. sure does.
Could it be that they’ve lost more than 10,000 subscribers, instead of fewer? That would make the numbers false, too.
McCain’s on the jazz.
This is what happens when you allow politics to drive your business decisions. Neutrality would have been nice… but oh well, they’ve made their beds….

You may not buy US Weekly, but chances are you use the products of their advertisers. Coca Cola, McDonalds, Disney and many others.
y buying ad space there, they are playing squarely in the political arena, and supporting these kind of vile tactics.
Here is a list of their paying sponsors:
http://www.boycottusweekly.com/advertisers.html
There are e-mail links for each advertiser listed there.
Well, my wife and I don’t subscribe to US, and I cancelled my Rolling Stone subscription a LOOOOONG time ago. That fishwrap leans so far left it swims in a circle.
Ha! Ha!
Go, Sarah, Go!
Oh, how I hope this proves true! I have not bought a copy of Us since I was in high school, and even then it was a pale comparison to People, so I find it hard to understand why any would buy that rag anyway.
I don’t buy or read tabloid rags. But I will pass the boycott message along.
I’ll be happy to boycott the advertisers, hit em it hurts, anyone have a list?
I sent the McCain camp a nice e mail regarding having Megyn Kelly as White House Press Secretary.
It’s Killin em and
I Love it!!!
McCain/Palin 08′
Image: US pukely getting slammed on ad revenues.
They should change their name from “US” to “US and THEM”.
No better way to show one’s displeasure then to hit them where it hurts – in the pocket book.
I don’t like any publication who just simply does fluff pieces on celebrities. I’d rather read some of my gun and hunting or motorcycle magazines.
ha! jim m. thanks…. posted b4 i saw your.
You can’t boycott products that you have no interest in…
I doubt whether any of the posters here have ever purchased this trash rag. If we’ve ever glanced through a copy, it has probably been at a doctors office while we waited interminably for our appointment.
Perhaps the best we could do is to forgetfully walk out with the doctors office copy so that others aren’t exposed to its pollution.
US can count on me NEVER buying a copy of Men’s Journal again. Purchasing their affiliated magazine would only support their efforts, and I will not do so.
This is what happens when you mess with the Palinator.
Took the words right out of my computer. This rag is already being boycotted by about 300 million people, more than likely. I doubt their subscription total adds up to as much as 1 million, and that’s mostly doctor’s offices.
This is good news. Show the elite media as well as the stupid trash media that we are strong and refuse to take in this garbage.
It’s a combination of sheer stupidity combined with colossal arrogance. Unfortunately, these traits are not limited to “media hacks,” but are pervasive amongst liberals in general. Ever been to a social gathering of obviously mixed company where some lib pipes up with the Bush-bashing and/or the Obama-worshipping? Happens all the
time…these willfully ignorant buffoons always think that everyone around them thinks like they do.
hmmm, after looking at the list of advertisers there is not much I could boycott. I value my money far too much to purchase this rag and my sanito too much to open the cover.
They need inflammitory covers just to get people to pick it up in the supermarket checkout lines. What a waste of paper, they should shut it down to prevent global warming, and I don’t believe in global warming.
Us Weekly has said that they haven’t lost 10,000 subscribers. It’s just a rumour started by desperate theocrats. Y’all can get back to what you were doing now.
If you compare the two magazine covers of Obama’s and Palin look to the left column of those covers and you will see more pictures of people smiling (Obama cover) versus people more subdued and not smiling (Palin cover) while Palin smiles. If that isn’t sending some kind of subconcious message to readers then I don’t know what is.
Even before this debacle, I always called this rag “PUS” magazine, because what comes out of it is akin to what comes out of a pimple or any other infection.
In contrast to a trashy, worthless publication such as US Weekly, you might want to read this UK piece today. It resonates pretty well why the McCain/Palin ticket is the real change for Americans.

Omu…then at least admit the obvious discrepancy between the two magazine coverages of Obama and Palin that Palin story is a hit job.
Omu-another member of Code Pink’s Internet Division. Their posts here are no different in motive from the Code Pink protests we see.
Okay. Since you appear to have the figures, what are they? Did they lose more, less, any? Or is this one of those semantic arguments where it was 10,001 so you can accuse us of “lying?”
“Inquiring minds want to know,” LOL!
For those interested, the letter I am sending to the lsited advertisers for US Weekly is provided below. Consider it yours; there is no pride of authorship here.
One name for US Weekly…Jim Zumbo…
Just a side note: As a waiter on the Upper Left Side of Manhattan I have waited on Wenner often. As well as his ex-wife. He often comes in with his boy toy, she often comes in with their teenage son (talk about future therapy sessions). I am SURE they assume that because I am on the Upper West Side AND a member of the working class I must be a Far Left Leaning Lib Dem. I know that the Editorial Staff of the NYT that come in definitely think that way. To be fair, Wenner and his ex are actually very nice. I can’t say that for the NYT’s people. They are generally outspoken, arrogant and cheap. One of them (who is well known, but will remain nameless for now) actually started to get up out of his chair to fight me when he was told I was a Republican and had to be calmed down by a female editorial writer that was even more well known. Welcome to the Upper Left Side of Manhattan where all is Diversity and Acceptance.

Let me guess: you have a friend who has a friend who a mother-in-law who works in Us Weekly’s circulation dept?
Oops! who “has a” mother-in-law
No, they’ve probably lost 20,000.
The emphasis is mine.
More here.
I received that as a freebie for a time and generally liked it, but their leftist crap got very annoying.
Now remember, 5000 is just false, but 10000 is completely false. After all, what are the odds of the exact number being an even thousand?
While you’re at it, ditch Oprah too. Too many reasons to count.
Wouldn’t it be a shame if the copies of Us Weekly in magazine racks and checkout lines went unsold because they all had torn covers?
I don’t know what kind of person would do something so malicious and underhanded…I’m just sayin’.
instead, make note of the advertisers and call/boycott them.
Repeat, US Magazine’s list of advertisers.
I called all the advertisers of products that I use this morning. It took a while but it was quite cathartic.
Now you have my fetid little brain on overdrive trying to think of a way to do it.
Bingo! Fetid Little Brain came through.
Thanks markie13, you are an inspiration to Fetid Little Brains all over America!
1) send in “Send No Money Now” postcard.
2) when bill or magazine comes in return-refuse! “After what you said about Governor Palin?”
You are a Great American markie13, my Fetid Little Brain salutes you.

Hey Obama-Want to see Bitter?
Look at your wife.
Like many people posted I have never bought a US Weekly. I will continue to not buy the US Weekly in the future.
Don’t worry, they hit like girls (Sarah Palin and our hostess excluded, of course!).
I just sent an email to Coca-Cola. I was going to cut-and-paste here, but forgot to get a copy before I sent. (Alas, I did it through their web page, so I don’t have a copy in my sent folder either). But this is pretty much what I sent:
As the mother of a son with Down Syndrome, I have been impressed with Coca-Cola’s long term sponsorship of Special Olympics. I like Coke, and other Coke products, although I admit I’m not as addicted as my husband (who can’t start the day without his Dr. Pepper).
Therefore I was saddened with US Weekly magazine demeaned Sarah Palin’s son with Down Syndrome on the cover of their latest issue. Given Coca-Cola’s long support for the mentally handicapped, I believe your company was unaware of this decision prior to publication. However, I hope you will consider their actions in your future advertising decisions.
Thank you for your support of the mentally handicapped and their families,
[signature]
I’ve email blasted a few of those people listed on US’s contact us web page, which is listed under Media kit….
I have never bought it but my Doctor does. I called him yesterday and he said he would cancel his subscription. He was very upset about the cover too.
Sounds more like they reached their nadir, or low point.
Us Weekly circulation is just under 2 million so a loss of 10,000 is really symbolic. A bigger hit would be to pressure the supermarket chains to take them off their shelves. Any conservative executives at any of these supermarkets?
Already received a response from LG. My reply to their response:
I left a little message on their website, amazingly their are some people posting there who ares till clinging to to the “Bristol is Trig’s mother” BS.
@ajmontana: You might find one of the shirts on my cafe press store to hold some interest for you! Check out the sleevelss T-Shirt.

Bob,
The next time he asks for a check, feel free to oblige, hockey style.
If the outlets do not sell a product, chances are they will drop the product.
Oddly enough I bet this is what they wanted. Everyone talking about them, dropping their product name every where. Oh the free advertisments, oh the new subscriptions, oh how many of that issue did they sell…
Plus they probably assumed that most of their readers are too dumb to pay attention to politics.
I happen to like the name of the ragazine US Weekly
Unbelievably Stupid Weekly
I think they should apologize and do a cover with a moose on it so we can at least us the rag for target practice!
@BobinStatenIsland:
Why should they remain nameless? He did this in a public place where there is no expectation of privacy, I say out the bastage!
I can’t imagine how looney toons this old white guy trying stand up to fight you must have looked.
That’s one drawback to living in a red state, I got no one to fight with except the occasional college student and typically they end up in therapy when I’m done.
Oh boy – Target! The irony is they are about to open their FIRST Alaska store in October and the location….WASILLA! Home town folks could be persuaded to organize a boycott based on this. I’m hoping Alaska stores will dump it without trying to sell this issue.
I’m curious. Does anyone know of industry tracking where magazine subscriptions are officially recorded/reported? Or are those numbers kept only between a magazine and its advertisers? Just wondering how it’ll shake out for US (UHbama Supporter) Ragazine.
The boycott should extend to Disney for sexist comments by one of its own about a mother and her children…
“Adding to the brutality of a national campaign, the Palin family also has an infant with special needs. What leads you, the Senator, and the Governor to believe that one won’t affect the other in the next couple of months?”
Bill Weir, Good Morning America
Hee hee! Power to the people!
If People was smart, it would run a lovely puff piece on the Palin family that would sell like mad.
That’s a pretty big If there. It would be like asking monkeys to write Shakespearean works.
Is anything as STUPID as arguing with the waiter who is the last person to touch your food before you eat it?
uhhh….. there’s is a rumor that a little Visine in a dish is very annoying and untraceable. That’s not a recommendation, just a factoid.
Remember kids, when the left “boycotts”, it is an expression of free speech and part of our uniqueness and culture that makes America great. When we do it, as in this case, it will be labeled “censorship” and will be offered as further proof of the Bush/Cheney agenda for enslaving our country in the bonds of repression.
Counting down…3, 2, 1…
I want to subscribe just so I can cancel! LOL
Not that any of us watch it, but can we add boycotting Oprah to the list?
Well how interesting that a couple of posters here are so “elite” as to think that Michelle Malkin readers would NEVER buy this magazine….you are just as ignorant as the magazine.
I am an upper middle class reader of that trash and Michelle Malkin’s site and I will never buy that trash again BUT make no mistake educated and hard working people do READ that and you have insulted me and I am sure other posters….take your tripe crap idea of what constitutes a MM reader and shove it up your nether regions.
Here is what I intend to do tonight. Go to the supermarket, put all US weekly in a cart and put in the toilet paper section where it belongs. Join me and that will be quite a statement.
I have contacted the advertisers as well. Here is Coca-Cola’s response:
I am pretty sure they do not care and will still be advertising in US.
I thought about that when I was in Publix yesterday. I may have to return today…
When I read that letter, it immediately made me think of the Charlie Brown movies and that noise that is made whenever an adult is talking: wahwahwah wahwah wah wahwahwah
Well, you get the idea. In other words, it doesn’t make sense.
I would have to disagree with that action. It would make us no different than others that try to hide speech that they do not agree with. Personally, it’s better to leave them be and let the general public see it for themselves. People can make their decision on its repulsiveness on their own.
I’m hoping that Oprah’s viewers are smart enough to see the bias the way the Us readers were. That’ll put her ratings in the basement.
Want to let your local Walmart or any store know you do not approve of the Usweekly slime attack on Gov Palin…load up a cart with some overly ripe produce (it will get tossed out anyways, plus you can always find a moldy orange or tomato at Walmart), layer in all the UsWeeekly trash mags you can find, and top with some other choice items like trash bags, Ben and Jerrys, Tyson poultry products. Use your imagination. Push the cart around the store for a while and then find a nice place to park it while you go home and get your wallet. See how long it takes for them to find it.
Thanks for the post and the list of advertisers. I went down the list and made calls this morning.
I emphasized that I was aware that the advertising dollars were already allocated before this issue went to press, but that publishers should be held accountable for their choices — and I expect public statements distancing themselves from this type of trash talk and the degradation of a special needs child on the cover — and that they will pull their advertising dollars.
Oh – PS- All the companies I called stated that they had gotten “alot of calls” this morning.
Also, I am phoning the two large supermarket chains in our area and telling them I don’t want to see that trash when I go shopping this week.
Speaking of needed boycotts:
http://www.drudgereport.com/flash3os.htm
My question to the ‘O’ is “what part of stumping for Obama as a candidate, is really any different than Palin appearing on your show”? Does she really believe that her endorsement is actually unattached to her celebrity, which is a direct effect of the popularity of her show?
I also doubt that after the election, Oprah will want to have anything to do with Palin. Somehow I do not see Oprah as a good loser!
Exactly. I own a business is a somewhat moonbatty town and I’m constantly surprised by the number of business owners who put peace signs, Obama posters and leftist literature in their windows and then whine when the tourists from Texas refuse to shop with them.
