Heading out to buy some treats for care packages & thought I would share this will you all:
Last Sunday (Labor Day Wknd) we were on the National Mall (our 4th year) collecting signatures for Thank You banners to send to our forward deployed troops with their care packages.
This project started when people in my community would come up to me and ask me to “Thank your husband for me”, so I bought a roll of white kraft paper, and the local mall gave us a booth where people could stop by and write what ever they felt in their hearts.
In the past, we have had general officers and Navajo wind talkers stop and sign.
Just thought I would share some of this year’s comments:
Thank you SO much. You are all heros, and we’re here enjoying a beautiful day on Washington Mall because you keep us free with all your hard work. You are ALL amazing! Thanks! Kyle G, NYC.

Are you going to conceal carry? (I don’t know the guns laws in NJ) If you intend to carry the gun, as in your purse, I’d recommend a lightweight piece with a hidden hammer. My sister just bought the S&W Airweight, which is really great for that purpose, but it’s not fun to shoot with, as it has a really harsh kick. After about 10 rounds, my hand was hurting really badly. However, as S&W put it, “It’s meant to be carried, not shot”.
I keep a Ruger SP100 .357/.38 in my nightstand, and it’s also a joy to shoot. I can go over 300 rounds with that thing and no kick, no pain! It’s rather heavy, though.
Someday I’ll get the new Ruger LCP, which is a semi that weighs only 9 oz., and has a hidden hammer, so no snagging. Apparently it’s made for the conceal carry crowd.
Before I bought my gun, I took a “Basic Pistol Shooting” class from a certified NRA instructor in my area. It was a 2 day class where we learned about basic gun protocol, how to clean, shoot, etc… It was a great class, and on the second day we went out on the range and practiced shooting. I didn’t have a gun but our instructor brought me a gun to use. Everyone there who had one also let me try their guns, which gave me a lot of input as to what I wanted to buy.

We had a strange incident in our Church last week. During daily Mass, (I was not present, but a friend who goes regularly told me) a young man walked into the church and stood for a while in the back. After a few minutes, right in the middle of prayer, he shouted out, “Come out and fight me”. Everyone just stopped and looked at him. Father paused, and said, “What did you say?”, and the guy repeated, “Yeah, you. Come out and fight me”. Father ignored him and continued the mass.
Then the guy left. Needless to say, everyone was quite nervous about the incident.
Already many in our parish have decided to start carrying heat at mass. After reading about nutjobs who go into churches and shoot people, we’ve decided to have a contingency plan.

We have a 16 month old female mostly lab that hunts moles (used to have a female chow mix that did the same thing)–listens for them and digs in the precise spot where the mole is–this dog LucyLoo is uncanny in her precision–but I feel a lot like Monk (it’s just too much nature since once she catches them she wants to play with them)The Chow Mix (Baby) used to bury them in her bed in the garage.

Well, my grandson and I went shooting with my brother yesterday, so we are cleaning guns. The yard needs to be mowed thanks to the remnants of Gustav. Then I have to change out tubes on what used to be my bicycle so my grandson has a bike that fits him again. (I’ll do the first one to show him how, then he can do the second one.) Two NASCAR races are set for the DVR if I can’t get time to watch them.

But for a choice of a first weapon I always recommend a .38 cal revolver-3 or 4 inch barrel- standard weight. A revolver is the easiest to learn and the most reliable. Keep away from the lightweight revolvers until you get use to the concept of control.
If you can buy used. Any good gunsmith or dealer can find one for you.

However, I do second that I think one’s first gun should be a revolver. Being mechanically challenged, I understand how it works, and how to clean it. I’m a bit scared of semis, but eventually I’ll come around to buying one, especially the Ruger LCP.

Greetings all!! Just trying to remind myself why I don’t stay out until 3:00 AM any more. Our dear friends Jim & Trisha threw their annual September B-Day Luau & Jam Session yesterday. Their daughter was born about 8:20 AM (CDT) on Sept. 11, 2001. That is one child’s birthday we will never forget.
Party started about 2:00 Saturday afternoon and we played to entertain the kids. We even did The Bare Necessities. To see 52 year old Jim doing the Baloo dance was a laugh riot. Once the kids were in bed…us old folks got out the rest of the guitars, electric piano and fiddle…and did our best to remember the good old days. Beatles, CS&N, Willie Nelson, Cole Porter, Allman Brothers, Arlo and a bunch of originals that some of us had written. I’m too old to do thjis any more…especially with a 50 mile drive from their place to ours.
Hope you guys are all happy, healthy and relaxing.
Michelle…keep the kids going in music. So much fun…and really is a practical application of physics. I’ve always called my music “Physics with a Soul”. Amazing what the study of acoustics and wave propagation can do for you.

Ruger makes a 327 Federal 6 shot revolver,(I think that’s right)that has nearly the punch of a 357 with one more round and less punishment for the shooter. Haven’t tried one but the reviews are good.

Thanks! I currently carry pepper spray. 1) I thought the bureaucracy in NJ was too daunting a task to take on in order to purchase a gun, 2) we have bears roaming these here parts. But I’ve since changed my mind and have come to the conclusion that pepper spray simply won’t cut it when it comes to protecting my home and myself. As for fear of shooting someone else… well, I hate to sound callous and most certainly wouldn’t take a life or injure someone without careful consideration. But in a split second situation when my only options are them or me. I’ll choose me over them everytime and twice on Sundays.
You’re a bears breakfast.
My first recommendation would be to move out of New Jersey. That said, it depends on why you want a handgun. From your mention of a .38 or .380, it sounds like personal/home defense is your need.
If you aren’t an experienced shooter, I’d recommend a 4 inch barreled medium-frame revolver in .357 Magnum or .38 Special. You can shoot .38 Specials in a .357 Magnum, and, if you can handle the recoil, you can move up to .357 Magnums in the future. Adjustable sights are good if you might want to target shoot but aren’t usually needed on a defensive piece.
For concealed carry a 2 to 3 inch barreled .38 or .357 in either 5 or 6 shot models should fit the need. Lightweight guns like S&W’s Airweight or Taurus’ Ultra-Lite revolvers recoil significantly more than steel guns but are easier to carry.

Before anyone purchases a firearm for self or family protection they must overcome the hurdle of taking a life in their mind, or what will most likely happen if a situation arises requiring deadly force is they’ll be killed with their own firearm. Never draw a weapon unless you are prepared to use it. Never point a weapon at something or someone you aren’t prepared to shoot.

However another option would be something along the lines of a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in .44 special. I carried one of those for a long time as an off duty weapon and always felt well protected.
In a home defense environment you want to avoid over penetration so a .44 spc. coming out of a 3″ barrel gives you a nice large frontal impact are that is going to put all of it’s kinetic energy in to the target– in laymen terms it’s a big, slow moving, hard hitting piece of lead.
And remember that the shorter the barrel the less accuracy you will ave due to bullet drop and less rifling to impart spin on the bullet. I had a Sgt. many years ago who arrived home to an ambush, pulled out his trusty 2″ S&W Chief’s special and proceeded to miss all 5 rounds from less than 6 feet. He got rid of it the next day.
I myself an a dyed in the wool .45 ACP fan and have found no better handgun that a well tuned 1911A1 model. But that is a single action handgun that has to be carried cocked and locked so it is not for the lightly trained. You want something that if it doesn’t go “BANG” when you pull the trigger all you have to do is pull the trigger again.
We used to call that “6 for sure”. I carried a S&W Model 66 4″ for years in LA and I never felt out gunned. The lethality lies in the gun handler, not the gun.
Hmmmm… my Ruger is a 2.25 snub and I can shoot all five rounds into a 3×5 index card from 12 feet.

For newbies I have a suggestion for getting started. I shoot a Ruger 22/45 for practice. You can shoot a cazillion rounds and not burn up a lot of money. The pistol is a semi patterned after the .45 1911. It has good heft, weight and making the transition to the heavier pistol is simple. My second favorite gun is a 9MM semi–also patterned after the .45 1911. It is an older model Llama with good weight. My next dream is a Kimber .45. The first two are not good carry weapons. Too big and heavy. But fun to shoot. Especially the Ruger.

And on the weapons front. I carry a 1911 in .45 ACP (of course) when I can get away with it. I’m a big guy so that’s most of the time. I am currently shopping for a small weapon for summer time carry. My brother the retired cop has just about got me convinced to go with a Glock 30. I don’t want to step down to the .40 S&W even though it is “nearly ballistically identical to a .45 ACP”. If you shoot someone with a .45, they STAY shot. DO NOT buy a 9mm. Electric Icepick. For most novices, stick with a revolver. .38 Special at a bare minimum. I like the Model 10 Smith & Wesson…used to have one. .357 Magnum…but all .357 Mags will shoot .38 special that won’t beat you up so badly with recoil.
Forget Modified Weaver and all the fancy combat techniques that I use. Go with a “triangle grip profile”, both hands on the weapon. Think “Center Mass”. Practice. Fire at least 200 rounds a week on the range. Remember that most gun fights take place in about the same space as an elevator.
No 2″ barrels…very small effective range…if he’s too far away to smack with the weapon, he’s too far away to shoot for 95% of folks.

Anyone worth shooting is worth shooting SEVERAL times.

I have to disagree about the Weaver stance, I find it much more natural and certainly easier when you have to move while keeping your weapon up and ready. It also presents you as a much smaller target and gives a more solid base to fire from.
Try moving tactically while remaining in an isosceles stance, it’s next to impossible and very clumsy.
FYI- The .40 S&W round was a direct result of the Miami FBI shootout in 1986. I attended an in service training session where that shooting was picked apart piece by piece, when you actually see the crime scene photos it gives you a perspective on what happened that no A&E movie ever could.
The .40 SW was supposed to give the knock down power of a .45 acp with the capacity of a 9mm- The advent of weapons like the Glock 20 made it a moot point.

For plinking you cannot beat a Ruger Standard model .22 with a bull barrel and for a smoke pole I suggest a Ruger 1022. Big fun on a budget.
To me however, this is REAL FUN. You can fill the air with lead all day and have change left over to buy a burger on your way home.
However if you want to reach out and touch something in a serious way I prefer the Interarms Mk X .243
People harass me because .243 is a light round, and it is. But that’s only a problem if you shoot like a liberal (Eyes squinted, knees shaking, prey losing interest while waiting for you to find the trigger…)

Two inch barreled revolvers are not less intrinsically accurate than any other handgun. The difficulty in hitting with them isn’t “not enough rifling;” it’s the short sight radius. At longer ranges, the velocity loss caused by the short barrel makes hitting problematic for those who don’t shoot regularly at extended ranges. For example, yesterday I took two steel pigs down at the handgun silhouette range (100 meters) with my 2 inch Taurus 85SSUL in .38 Special. Granted, it took ten shots to hit twice, but I was close with the rest.
Of course, I’ve been shooting for 46 years and used to shoot competitively when in the Army.

I really like my Ruger P89, though it was more expensive than I was planning on. There are two things that I don’t like about it though. There is no safety on it, and even when the magazine is out, it can still fire. I do like the de-cocker that it comes with. It definitely eliminates the chance of an accidental firing when dropping the hammer.
My next 4 purchases will be, in no particular order, a Spencer rifle (Cowboy style like a true Repub.) Winchester 30/30, A S&W .40 semi, and a .357 wheel.
Problem is, out here in Cali, the prices are so high that it takes forever to save up for them. By the time I get close, some kind of emergency occurs and the gun money gets used for something else.
There is a gun auction that you can use on-line, except that the laws here in California forbid getting any of the good ones. Add to that the outrageous costs that gun stores charge to be the go-between and it is just ceaper to go to the gun shop.
It really is getting to the point where the only good thing about this state is the weather, and that is getting to be not enough. I can’t wait till I am able to move away.
I bet Alaska doesn’t have these issues.

sometimes I day dream and thinking how great, successful and peaceful this country would be if only 1/3 of the mass media was conservative…then i wake up to this marxrist, socialist bs.
As far as a choice in guns for protection, it’s like most everything else…personal preference. Not a gun shooter for 40 yrs, last yr I picked up a 357 2in. barrel for concealed carry and home protection. Live in a 1 bedroom apartment should do fine but I am seriously wondering about missing my target and shooting an innocent down the street, and that’s using hollow points. If and when I move to a larger place, say 2 or 3 bedrooms, I’ll be getting me a 12 gauge shotgun with a legal short barrel(18.5 in). IMHO no better home protection..won’t shoot a neighbor by missing your target and going through sheet, easier to aim and hit the your target. Oh, pump action also…ever hear that chck-chck…make a drugger think twice…they know what it is.
