This poll is only 2/3 after effect of McCain’s speech.

This means this poll isn’t the full effect of McCain’s speech. Wait for this weeks polls.

As far as a choice in guns for protection, it’s like most everything else…personal preference. Not a gun shooter for 40 yrs, last yr I picked up a 357 2in. barrel for concealed carry and home protection. Live in a 1 bedroom apartment should do fine but I am seriously wondering about missing my target and shooting an innocent down the street, and that’s using hollow points.

If over-penetration is a problem, try Glaser or MagSafe ammunition for home defense. You could also try a .223 Rem/5.56 NATO carbine with varmint rounds. More effective than a pistol with less over-penetration than a pistol or shotgun.

    Oh baybee! ::swoon::

I’m moving to Colorado from Hillaryville next week so I can’t wait to breathe the fresh air of freedom and maybe even gun rights. (Can’t wait to go where my red vote may even be counted!!!)

I’m not a shortarm man, I do like plinking with a hip gun from time to time though. My last revolver was a Colt Walker .45 replica. Talk about fun! I really should have gotten the shoulder stock for that charcoal burner. :)

Folks like you and me…been shooting forever…competition for me… yeah I’ll teach some folks combat advance advance advance…fire fire…
but a woman who has only seen a pistol and is within her first coupla hundred rounds. I want her comfortable, able to get rounds center mass…and not be afraid of the weapon.
Yeah…40 S&W was the offshoot of that FBI shooting in Florida…essential a 10mm Kurtz round. Same relation between 9mm & .380 or .357/.38 Spec.
I’m not saying that it isn’t a good round. I’m an old school 1911 shooter for 30+ years. The Glocks just don’t feel right in my hand. I can shoot them just fine…but not like I can put rounds on the target with a 1911.

Okay folks, Nancy Pelosi has been called to have a “conversation” with the

This is just one part of her statement and has not been taken out of context. Pelosi
has defended her position, quoted by the San Francisco chronicle as saying, “This isn’t really an abortion issue” but rather consideration of “a procedure that any parent

Apparently the Archbishop is channeling Queen Victoria at this point, as in, “We are

How else do you explain how he sat in a Christian church for 20 years and didn’t hear a thing that Jeremiah Wright was saying?

And forget about that story about being a poor black child, he’s not black. According to Savage Politics

Senator Obama’s racial background consists of the following: 50% white (mother, both sides), 43.25% Arabic (father, both sides), and 6.25% African Negro (father, one side, 1 generation removed). 12.5% is the legal threshold one must prove to claim racial status under the law. In addition, Senator Obama cannot make a sociological claim as an African American either. He was not raised as an African American, was not raised by African Americans, and was not raised in an African American neighborhood.

Hah! Did you hear the latest that the Democrats are now claiming the Republicans stole those flags that were trashed at Invesco?

that’s right. Using our youth infiltrators, the Boy Scouts, the Republican Party, after amny months of tireless planning and preparations jumped into action following the DNC.

Seeing how the DNC was planning on placing teir flags into garbage bags, cleverly concealing them near the refuse containers so as to try and keep their overly patriotic members from taking more than their share of flags home in which to decorate their houses and neighborhoods, The Boy Scouts snuck into their encampment and while the DNC staff was otherwise busying themselves with placing the Greek Comumns back into storage, they stole all the bags of flags.

Sensing the enormous victory at hand, and knowing full well the anger and disappointment that the Dems and Liberals were sure to feel now that they could no longer have those patriotic displays and decorations at their homes and neighborhoods, The Boy Scouts handed the falgs over to the McCain Campaign where John McCain himself came out and received the cleverly disguised bags of flags and, giving The Boy Scouts a Fascist Salute as befits such a Right-Wing hate group as the BSA, thanked them for what can only be described as a very dangerous mission to thwart the DNC’s ability to demonstrate to the world just what patriotic Americans they really are.

    B. Hussein Obama himself was overheard to exclaim, “I was all prepared to stand at attention with my hand over my heart in order to teach my daughters the proper way to show respect to our country and the men and women who have served her, when I found out that there would be no flags in my house now, all because of some little Eichmans dressed up in their little hate-group uniforms.

“I am pretty sure that they infiltrated my home as well, for I cannot seem to locate any of the 1,000 American Flag lapel Pins that I keep in my bedroom. Rest assured, we will get to the bottom of this, and when we do, my lawyers will sue the crap out of these Little Eichmans. Next thing you know they will try to impede me from practicing my Muslim Faith…I mean my Isl…I mean my..well…you know..that religion with that wrongfully depicts that white guy as the Saviour of the World…you know what I am talking about.”

Senator mccain and his running mate Gov. Sarah Palin were, of course, “Unavailable” for comment.

My CCW is a Para Ordnance light double action only. I was brainwashed way back in Basic Training to never carry a 1911 .45 cocked and loaded so it is a LDA for me. Yes one of the more costly .45s around but I feel it is totaly safe to carry with a round in the chamber.
However the very long trigger pull can take some time to get used to.

Also with respect to over penetration of walls, I think you would find almost anything but perhaps a .22 Long Rifle round would go through the normal sheet- rock wall.

We responded to the MHA – Melungeon Heritage Association, joining the AATA what appears to be a Turkish lobby group. They claimed through their association with the MHA that the People and descendants of the People called Melungeon supported their lobbying of our Government in denying the Armenian Genocide. We organized and pushed back we made it clear they can’t speak for people who don’t even know of their existence the MHA is about 6 board members. We made it clear we wouldn’t be used in any political lobbying efforts. Few know of the Turkish foray into Appalachia to co- opt not only Melungeon heritage but also the Indigenous people, who were residing in the U.S. before it’s European colonization.

We have been pushing back. The Turkish Lobbyist, swelled the numbers of Melungeons to 2 million. Where they got that number, no one knows, and used their association to Melungeon Heritage Association, to lobby our Congress. My ancestors were not Turks, there is nothing wrong with being Turkish. I just don’t have Turkish ancestry. All this has been going on under the radar, you don’t hear about it in the news. When I last went to look at a handgun the dealer strongly urged me to consider a shotgun instead. Since I was primarily interested in home defense he said the shotgun would be a much better choice.

His point was that it was harder to miss with a shotgun and the sound of the pump action loading a round might be enough to send an intruder running without ever having to fire a shot.

He then advised that if I were going to go with a handgun that I would want hollow point ammo and not frangible ammo.

Still, practice, practice, practice is the order of the day. I am no slouch with a rifle but I have never become proficient with a handgun. And they are very different animals.

However, what I really wanted was the Jugoslavian-made MG42 knockoff he had for sale. Nothing says loving like a belt-fed weapon. But, it seems like it would be hard to deploy inside my home.

On the topic of weapons – it’s great advice to start out with a revolver, especially if you’re a small woman. Plus, it really makes you think about what you’re doing, each and every time, and the mechanics behind it. It had been years since I’d fired “anything” and found that even the little Kel-tec was more than my wrist could handle – but, the lightweight Taurus .38 was manageable. Try them all and do take a refresher or beginner course, whether or not you ever intend to apply for a CCW permit. Like golf, don’t have a close friend or husband try and teach you either. Bear, it’s true that almost any round will do that but a bigger, slower round with a lot of cross sectional front area is less likely to do so, and it’s much less likely once it has made contact with soft tissue, bone and tendons. The higher velocity rounds are the ones most likely to over penetrate the target e.g. 9mm, .380 (which is just an underpowered 9mm) .22 short and LR.

As for a shot gun, I could not disagree more, FAR too many projectiles flying around at once to be safe, especially with others in the house or the next house or apartment over– for home protection a shotgun is no go in my book.

And as for the sound of you racking a round in being a deterrent, let me tell you about a rookie cop I once knew who thought that was a good idea in order to break up a fight in a Mexican bar in Boyle Heights– he didn’t realize that the loud music and screaming pretty much nullified that idea. And he was left with a loaded shotgun and 6 people still going at it that he had to break up and no place to put said shotgun without having to run all the way back out to his unit. But, your last point is “dead on,” if you’ll excuse the intended pun. My rifle instructor said the same thing. Never aim a weapon at anyone or anything unless you intend to shoot. Of course, he then followed up by saying, if it is worth shooting once, it is worth shooting twice.

I do recommend that anyone considering a 1st time gun purchase and CCW for PP, start slow. If you do not have family or friends to learn from, go to a local shooting range or club and ask around. They will put you onto some pistols to try out. Guys at my club are always eager to help out a ‘newbie’.

Accuracy trumps caliber. Practice, practice, practice. A .22 cal. is economical and is great to learn good shooting skills for any siuation. Progress up to the caliber you are comfortable with for PP.

Some of my favorites: Ruger Mark III, .22, 6″ SS, is for plinking, fishing, mushroom hunting, etc.

Springfield XD, 4″ in .40 S&W for PP.

Ruger Super RH in .480 Ruger w/9″ bbl for hunting, aw aw aw aw! Both its bark and its bite are not to be taken lightly.

I’ve watched boyfriends and husbands at the range trying to teach the other half. Laree, #249…I just finished reading my first book on the Melungeons and found it
fascinating. The author was tracing his family and in the process of listing and writing
about his family he also brought out that there is some thought that Nancy Hanks, Abe
Lincoln’s Mother may have been Melungeon. He also brought out that Andrew Jackson
may have had some Melungeon relatives that he very neatly disposed of by packing them up and sending them on the Trail of Tears with the Cherokee.
I found it so interesting that they claim to be “Portugee” or Turkish and spoke a sort of
Shakespearean English at one time. They and the Lumbee Indians who have names that harken back to the Roanoke Colony ( Lumbees not Melungeons) really have been
neglected. I do understand that the Lumbee are trying to have themselves declared a
Native American tribe which is hard with those English last names.
Am intending to hit Amazon for some more books on the subject.

    GK-

A shotgun used for home defense is a good choice, but realize that large lead shot will blow through a human body and keep going. I just read an article today about 00 buckshot…5 yds away spread 5 inches; 7 yards away spreads 7 inches…you must be aware of what’s behind your target.

Ammo like Glasers, Cor-Bon Power Ball, and others, is designed to expend all it’s energy inside a body cavity (that’s why many law enforcement agencies have gone to it.) This ammo causes massive tissue damage and devastating hydro-static shock. It is designed to be highly frangible to reduce pass throughs.

On the subject of Saiga’s…it’s Russian made, and I personally wouldn’t want to send any more money to that regime. Buy American. Entry level Remington model 870 is inexpensive, reliable, and will more than do the job.

Goldwater, you could but again the same problems arise. Rifled slug is highly inaccurate (due to the rifling being molded in to the slug and not on the shotguns bore) and thats 2-3 ounces of lead with a whole shedload of powder behind it- it’s the one exception to the bigger cross sectional area being a deterrent to over penetration.

Bullets are funny things and sometimes do things you would not think possible, but once that bullet has left the muzzle, you cannot call it back. I’ve seen bullets kill people in way that I have yet to explain, yet they did.

Remember you are likely to be moving in an eclosed area, possibly with people/kids sleeping in rooms separated from you by some sheet rock and insulation only. A long gun is NOT the best choice in that situation. Pistol grip you say? Try firing a shotgun for more than a few rounds with that and you will feel like your wrist is being twisted off.

large caliber, slow moving (<1000 fps) hollow points in a quality handgun is the way to go.

Revolvers go for SW, Ruger, Charter Arms.

Semi-auto go for Glock, Sig Sauer, HK, Springfield Armory or Kimbal.

You know, I watched that video of the Tree mourners twice before I sent it off to all my friends and well wishers, and each time I have seen it, I just can’t help but wonder, “How the hell can those men actually feel like they have an ounce of testosterone in their systems”.

Seriously…are there women out there that would actually be interested in a make who is in hysterical sorrow, who wanders out into a forest all to wail, wrend their garments, and gnash their teeth over some cut down trees?

These guys would have got their butts destroyed in school. I cannot imagine for one moment, one nano-second that there would be any woman that could look at these sissies…yes, that’s right, I called them sissies…and think, “Oh, what a sensitive and rational man. I would just love to marry him and have his babies. He would most surely be a great provider and protector for me and for our children. What a sexy maaayyun.”

Just looking at that makes you want to grab each and every one of them by the front of their unwashed, smelly shirts and slap them around, telling them to man up, let them drop and stop acting like some sort of 2 year old who lost their woobie.

But then that might just be me.

    TXRose,

Our problem didn’t stem from the Turkish Theory, although it has been disproven, the problem is when they joined the AATA and were used to lobby our Government. The MHA is a board of about 6 and can’t speak or represent any people of Melungeon ethnicity but that is exactly what happened. We told them not in our name, don’t get us involved in Politics.
Wayne Winkler the President of MHA was one of the first ones to resign he is now the President of the Historical Melungeon Society, it is based on historically accepted research standards. The standards are already in place, re the board of certified genealogist. There are many books on The Melungeons. Wayne Winkler wrote one himself.

And gee…I don’t have any idea where all of us Republicans and Conservatives could have ever come up with the idea that the Democrats would even THINK about throwing out all those flags. After all, they have shown nothing but pure reverence, honor and respect for it. It’s not like they would go and burn them or anything like that.
