Who was behind the Sambo smear?
Over the weekend, I noted the scurrilous claim of a left-wing blogger who “reported” the hearsay rumor that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin called Obama a “Sambo” and Hillary Clinton a “bitch.”
Even the nutballs at the Daily Kos deleted a posting about the smear.
Who was behind the attack? Macranger takes a look at the Democrat political operatives who helped spread the smear.

No big suprise. What say you LGM????
They are REALLY desparate now!
Go ahead, guys! The more you strike out at her this way, it seems the more Americans like her!
Its getting worse michelle
Those submorons at the DU have actualy put “Trig Palin” up on ebay for sale as a used prop.
Well, with all respect, if she called Clinton that, she was spot on. The Obama portion I won’t comment on, other to say it was not good IF she said that.
Man, the smell of fear is really strong if I turn my head to the left.
Wow, William Amos that’s over the top.
Here’s a bunch of idiots thinking they can help out their candidates. Unfortunately, they don’t realize that it backfires very easily. I guess they’re hoping that the more crap they throw at the media, maybe some of it may stick. Palin is an unknown running for a lonely office. But, she is a threat because she is an unknown, and with fresh ideas that Washington insiders don’t want to hear or, especially, don’t want the public to hear. She is giving a big boost to their feared enemy, McCain.
This smear is of the same calibur of the “Michelle Obama whitey” comment. There is no proof it was said.
That crap is still going on? I surprised Ebay has let its logo be used for something like that.
I hope the soccer moms are paying attention. For years, the democrat party told you how important you are and how you can have a career and family. They are now telling you to go back to the kitchen and stay there.
I, for one, am shocked that the left is allowing these distractions to divert attention from their candidate’s rock solid positions on the issues.
Yeah, I had a tough time typing it, too.
lol js… Obama probably has a hard time making up his mind about which socks to where. lmao
JSR,
ROFL
Wow – Just WOW. And I am called crazy???
What a disgrace these idiots are…
Don’t look at me!

Of course You know the GOP and Al Qaeda are really no different
#14 sambo
Now that’s funny, right there. I don’t care who you are.
That’s right, lefties, keep it up. Even the hippies here in the People’s Republic of Santa Cruz have had about had enough of this crap, wondering aloud this morning if “maybe Obama doesn’t think he can win unless he pulls these stunts”.
If Obama can’t read his own country well enough, we sure as *bleep* don’t want him anywhere near an office that requires him to stay more than a step ahead of our foreign enemies, now, do we??

Amos … I love how the poster ends his title with “seriously”. Like, I’m not joking, man. LOL.
William Amos #3 – I don’t know why I ever find myself saying, ‘They can’t go get any lower or more disgusting.’
Clearly they can and will… WHY isn’t THIS all over the News?
Sigh… rhetorical…
The original story was hilarious. IIRC, they quoted someone close to the source as saying, “I wasn’t surprised Palin talked that way. All Alaskans talk that way”. LOL! All Alaskans are comfortable calling blacks “sambo” and women “b!tches”. Onion piece indeed.
Democrats using racial epithets? Shocking.
I suspect this type of smear will reach a fever point by the end of October.
Think Columbia Noose incident as the template for this election.
The last week of this election may well be the dirtiest in the history of the republic.
This story was on a thread, Friday, I think. A poster documented their live help with Ebay to try and get this logo page removed, but he met with resistance. There was also a story that Huffpo had individual posting pages for each Palin child. The comments were pretty sick, but it’s to be expected from those people. I’m trying to find the link here so that those of you who missed it can see it for yourselves.
http://michellemalkin.com/2008/09/05/the-nutroots-palin-family-shooting-gallery/
Here are both stories I posted above.
The whole Sambo thing annoys me. Clearly the story was about a boy in India but the worthless media carried the “racist” complaint for years until the Sambos restaurant chain went out of business. That was when the MSM had a monopoly on the media.
No longer. Palin doesn’t come across as someone who talks that way, and there’s no proof, so…
In the original thread about this smear, i had linked over to the L.A. Progressive and their “About Us” page, where it described who the two troglodites were who ran that thrash e-zine and what their stated purpose was and what their politics were and what the purpose was for their little endeavors.
The L.A. Progressive had been a Liberal “Destroy ‘The Man’ and the COnservatives/Republicans underground newspaper a long time ago that had drifted into obscurity due to the fact that people just plain get tired of reading things from those that never have anything good to say and are always complaining and whining about something.
Appaerntly, along with the Liberals new found tenacity for hatred and libelous attacks on those who do not think and act as they do, they had become sentimental for the good old days and decided they could be even better at the slime that was being produced out there. With the belief that the thought patterns of the Liberal Hate Mongers have is actually the majority think of this country, they decided to re-launch the old format and make it bigger, better, more disgisting and do it in electronic form.
Their only goal is to push the Liberal “Progressive” thoughts and beliefs upon the entire world, starting in this country, and they are not above illegal and dishonest means to attain it.
I will just never understand what is so “Progressive” about these Liberals who call themselves that. For if what they do and say and how they act is progress…they can keep it, I want nothing to do with it.
Sambos restaurant didn’t go out of business. They changed their name to Denny’s. I agree with AlohaGuy. Gov. Palin doesn’t come across as someone who talks that way. We know that Democrat opertives do. Country First!!!

When I was very young, we had a Sambo’s restaurant here and my uncle worked there while he was in high school. I remember him talking about how it went out of business, mostly because of the name recognition.

Right into the Obama Campaign
Thanks for the info. I guess I am getting old.
I am trying to recall which characters that were on the Amos n Andy radio program most resemble Obama. Kingfish ?
Denny’s is a different chain. The Sambos name came from the two founders, Sam Battistone and Newell Bohnett. Sam and Bo. According to Wiki, the original is still left in Santa Barbara, the rest are gone.
That will be the second blog post (that I know of) on Obama’s site that’s been deleted. Interesting.
Actually it was a misunderstanding. IIRC – This arose from a recording of Michelle asking “Why’d he [do X]?” several sentences in a row. Taken alone it sounds like she was saying “Whitey…”. Once the recording was put out it was fairly obvious what she was saying.
JS Ragman: You must be a Marine veteran with a handle like that. Semper Fi. LOL.
I still don’t understand the problem Democrats have with Sambo. What is it exactly that is at issue?
As the story goes, a cute, smart, black Indian boy, outsmarts a Tiger, and turns him into butter…it’s a children’s fantasy story!
So, is the problem with the character’s cuteness? His intelligence? His blackness? His ability to actually formulate a plan that succeeds? Is it because Lil’ black Sambo was a “boy?” Do they have a problem with butter?
I guess I too would have a problem with all those things if the story was intended to demonize smart little black kids, but this old story is about an Indian kid, whose skin was darkened from playing out in the sun, not an African kid.
Maybe they are offended, in this case, because of the connection between Biden and his Indians in 7/11 gaff?
when lying about the worst economy in 50 years, or we can’t win any war, or democrats protect the working man, fail to reach the electorate, let’s play the race card and accuse all conservatives of racism, sexism, homophobia, and all around stupidity. imagine the mtv host calling america stupid for electing bush when they keep giving billions to the queen mum and her soap opera offspring.
Close…but wrong. The company changed their name to “Lyons”, which sort of stayed with the ‘Sambos” theme…I guess no one would go to a restaurant named “Tigers”.
Totally, I wish the kid was white so I could have a hero in my image like Sambo. He totally beat the mean tigers all by himself without any adults. What an awesome kid. I remember reading the story of ‘little black Sambo’ from when I was little. I can’t fathom how it is considered ‘racist’.
If Jimmy Carter and Rev. Wright can call Obama “Boy”, what’s the problem with Sambo? Not that I am saying she would ever say that, but look who is ON RECORD calling BHO a derocative!
Denny’s is a different chain. The Sambos name came from the two founders, Sam Battistone and Newell Bohnett. Sam and Bo. According to Wiki, the original is still left in Santa Barbara, the rest are gone.
What more can you say? When you’re right you’re right.

Notice that their blog is paid for by the Obama Campaign (at bottom of page).
The thing I keep noticing about the term ’sambo’ is that it always originates from the left.
My parents bought the children’s book, Little Black Sambo in the early 1950’s. It was one of my favorites, as was the follow-along Peter Pan book and record (LP). I vividly recall the cover of that book which featured a little dark skinned boy wearing a turban, being chased around a palm tree.
Back then, you know, before the Civl Rights movement, there were no black people featured in media, with perhaps the exception of the Aunt Jemima brand maple syrup labels.
To suggest that the character Sambo was changed from black to Indian for appearance sakes, is just flat wrong. Sambo was, and is, an Indian character.
In actuality, the his race or color wasn’t an issue, until political correctness raised it’s ugly head, and made it an issue.
Sorry to disappoint you. 20+ years Surface Navy(ret.). Until you guys learn to walk on water, we still have our place.
Well, right or wrong, the assumption before the 60’s was that Sambo was black, and being black, was from Africa, turban notwithstanding. The recording did not specify locale, so I guess that was left up to the reader or listener many of whom possibly thought it took place, wrongly, in Africa.
And yes, the Sambo chain specifically changed the appearance of the Sambo character to a lighter skinned Indian boy and empasised the fact that the story indeed took place in India, with the tiger being indiginous to India.
Sambo’s attempt to appeace the PC crowd in the 70’s didn’t work not matter that it corrected the Sambo charachter and story. Too many people just coundn’t get over the name, or didn’t want to defend it and be considered racist, and the chain bowed to pressure figuring it just wasn’t worth the fight
From their (Dick & Sharon Price) blog page:
They sure have been busy…
Headline-to-come: “Obama denounces ‘Sambo’ rumormongers; claims couple is ‘not the Dick & Sharon Price I thought I knew, if, indeed, I had any idea who they were’…”
Interesting look, here: (it gets to Sambo a little ways down).
I personally have, more than once heard my fellow Caucasians use “Sambo,” as a racial epithet — regardless of the wholesomeness of the story itself, the term has become derogatory.
How about Republican Congressman Westmoreland calling Obama “uppity” then denying that the word has racial overtones?
How about the fact that there is no evidence whatsoever that Gov. Palin called Sen. Obama a Sambo?
But since we’re getting off topic – How about the fact that the word “uppity” lists a quote from the New York Times on several dictionary sites.
Oh wait!!! Let me guess…niggardly is a racially charged word too…right lgm?
1. Buy a dictionary.
2. Look the word up.
3. Ask one of your betters to explain it to you.
Why does the word, “uppity”, have racial overtones? When did that word get hijacked??
Lgm:
I guess it’s okay to start a campaign of lies when actual socialist ideas don’t work for Dems, right?
So… what’s your kickback, Math man? Don’t want to pay for college for the kiddies? Want the American taxpayer to foot the tab? My sister-in-law, the social worker, is an avid Obummer supporter, has a vested interest in the election. She supports the idea of universal health care, which will funnel more money her way as a social worker.
Back on topic… when the campaign, especially that of a swindler like Obummer, gets away from the actual “explanation” of ideas and relies more on mistruths and misleading the American voter… that is not putting the country before your own selfish ambitions. The whole Sambo smear ties into that.
You mean like the terms “white devils,” “honkey,” and “redneck?”
You said it best…”the term has become derogatory.” The names I refer to above were created to be derogatory from the onset.
The derogatory nature of Sambo is a direct result of political correctness, hate-speech and division that emanates from the left’s pathetic need for victimhood.
I looked the word, “uppity” up on dictionary.com.
The definitions have no racial references. Then, when I hit the link to Brittanica.com (to “learn more about uppity”), it took me to a site that has the KKK, the Democratic Party and the United States all listed, and then I got some error.
What the *bleep*?
lgm is diverting attention. He’s also inaccurate in saying that Westmoreland denied overtones. What Rep. Westmoreland said was that he was not aware of any overtone:
If a Democrat had said the word (uppity), we would be hearing over and over about context. Or in the case of President Carter or Sen. Biden calling Sen. Obama a “boy”, it would be ignored. Since a republican said something, apparently we should throw denotative definitions out the window and focus on connotations.
It still doesn’t change the fact that Dick & Sharon Price seem to be guilty of libeling Gov. Palin.
Who even says “Sambo” anymore? Oh…lying liberals. Nevermind.
Oh my. I just followed that link and ended up on the “LAProgressive” and I just feel unclean, both figuratively and literally.
http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/09/05/alaskans-speak-in-a-frightened-whisper-palin-is-%E2%80%9Cracist-sexist-vindictive-and-mean%E2%80%9D/
It is just another DU/KOS/HuffPO type site, and if these two are affiliated with Obama in any way, he has a serious problem. The story is a complete fiction, ersatz “red meat” for the lock step, knee jerks on the left.
Some “gems” from the site:

Dem think.
That doesn’t bode well for Obama’s “chicken in every pot” political promises, does it?
Hope I don’t live next door to this person.
Desperate Diana needs to stop watching soap operas.
Does Darla really want to bring up the word “clean” on a site like this?
I think it says more about her “typical white” Grandma than anything else. Seems to be a lot of that in Dem circles.
We will when we hear it. “Truth and Justice” are only words to this liberal Nazi.
The women on this site are scarier than some of the men!
Yeah, “journalists” like this pair…
I hope she was talking about the preceding examples I gave and not Palin.
I guess I finally know what “community organizers” do.
After reading the story and the site, I think I felt myself devolve a little bit.
There were plenty of people, both liberal and not, noting the high level of BS and the low level of proof, but they were lost in the spew.
How low will some liberals sink?
Or like any number of descriptives applied to African Americans or indeed virtually every other race, religion or nationality. Speaking of victimhood, that looks suspiciously like the card you’re trying to play.
I can hear Jeff Foxsworthy now: “If you’re race runs the Western world yet you still feel discriminated against, you may be a…”
Sambo became derogatory not because of some PC thing but because white people started calling black people “Sambo” to derogate them (plus its association with other negative stereotypes. You should read my link, it’s pretty interesting).
Sorry lib, it’s the leftists that play cards. And yeah, I do feel victimized because I’m lumped in the same species as the foul ignorant morons who called Barak Hussein Obama “Sambo” then tried to blame it on Sarah Palin.
It’s not hard to feel superior with childish jerks like the members of the Daily Kos, the Democratic Underground, moveon.org and fans of Michael Moore running loose. But to be considered evolutionarily on par with them makes my teeth itch.
Michelle,
BTW do you know why Sarah Palin is not giving interviews to media? If this were a someone you didn’t like, I am sure you would be ripping them off here considering this close to election.
Hmmm.. the other day, I was in a Denny’s eating soup — the waitress came to the table and said, “Cracker?” — I politely said no thanks. I wonder if I should have been offended. Oh well, I used the rest of the day on a great Harley ride.
Why is lgm being so damn uppity?
This is pathetic.
Salt said (#54):
There is evidence: someone who claims to have heard. OK it’s not strong evidence, which is why it never was picked up even by main stream posters on the major left wing blogs.
Malkin tries to tie this to the Obama campaign, but that link is weaker than the quote itself. One wingnut says
But you follow his link and you find two people who have created a page for themselves on an Obama site that has almost no content. They don’t work for the campaign.
As they say in the big blue apple: puhleeeze. It’s like Wallace running for President on “states’ rights”, when everyone know the main right he wanted states to have was segregation.
Dude, it’s true. Arguably unfair and all that, but a fact. I have heard it used in that way.
It’s denial that’s pathetic.
Heh. Good one.
Sorry jerk off, not buying this BS. Why don’t you take your song and dance and try to make the blacks in Philly stop calling each other “n*gga.”
Sambo wasn’t derogatory till lib scum made it derogatory; kind of like how libs are trying to make words like “mother” and “father” derogatory.
In fairness to the Dems, I’d like to point out that no one – I repeat, no one has offered any proof whatsover that Palin wasn’t in NY at Columbia when the noose was hung. Need I say more?
First of all, this is the latest of your comments blasting Palin what whatever reason I can’t understand. What is your beef exactly?
Check your info again. Sarah will be interviewed by Charles Gibson on ABC this week. So yes, she’s availing herself of the media.
So much for that unavailability theory!
Im don’t think that I have cried over being called a name since back when I was in pre-school. Im a sensitive man OK? I embrace that, dont judge.
But Im pretty sure there isnt a name in the world that my ex-wife hasnt already called me, so give if your best shot!
No, seriously….. give it your best shot, I’ll go get my tissues in the meantime.
Now if we knew why Obama will not meet McCain at a townhall debate despite his “anytime, anywhere” response months back…
…but that’s off-topic.
On the other hand, does anybody know of her whereabouts at this time? Isn’t it a little suspicious that nobody is talking about this? This whole thing has Roves fingerprints all over it.
“Mother” and “father?” Now you’re unhinged.
People who share ethnic backgrounds have a license to communicate in ways that would be found offensive if used by non-members. Levi what’s-his-name was pleased to refer to himself on his MySpace page as a “f***ing redneck,” but if I walked into an Alaska roadhouse and called the guy sitting next to me a redneck, I’d get my butt kicked.
Similar rules apply to the gentlemen if Philly who annoy you so.
Dimsdale, you have compiled from your cut-and-pastes from LA Progressive more comments about Palin’s posterior than I have heard or read in all the conservative media accounts on her combined.
I think they’re all confused. There’s only one President who decided he wanted a woman in the White House based only on her butt: Bill Clinton.
Please tell me this is a joke.
The dudes from Philly have far more gravitas that you’ll ever have lib. I find your “rules” thing very funny; I showed that to the guys and they laughed their @ss off.
btw, the liberal feminists and homosexuals have been real hard at work to change the traditional meaning of mother, father and family. Stop lying please.
Parental Beings 1 through N?
/sarc
Or would the word “parental” denote too much actual responsibility?
You can’t ‘give’ offense, someone has to ‘take it’. Calling people derogatory names is my RIGHT as an American (you know, free speech)? You don’t have a right to not be offended.
I enjoy calling people ‘Yankee’ and I consider it derogatory toward a certain group of people. I expect to do business with them and I don’t expect to take anything from them, but it is descriptive (which is what language is for).
I’m tired of this culture of victimhood. . . oh poor me, somebody called me Sambo. Can you believe they called me Sambo? What an attrocity of human and civil rights. . . I can’t believe that we live in a society that permits people to call other people Sambo. THE HORROR.
Really, it isn’t against the law. It’s stupid to be offended if someone calls you Sambo (even if it is derogatory). Would it be LESS offensive if they called you ‘retarded’, or ’stupid’, or ‘ignorant’? Would it mean anything more if they switched the words?
I’m just tired of it. FREE SPEECH means you can say whatever you want. If someone wants to take offense, then that is their problem.
Actually I’m hoping KOS and DU pick up on this and start passing it along. That would make them look even more insane than they do now.
Well, you may not like my “rules” but I suggest that if you walk into a black neighborhood and begin a conversation by saying, “hey, n-word, let’s talk about ethnic slurs” you’ll find that I’m right.
Amazing that, given the number of hours a day I spend around liberal feminists (by which I gather you mean any woman who intends to vote for Obama) and homosexuals, I’ve never heard any of them take issue with the traditional usage of the words “mother” and “father” or, as your original point was, to make them epithets.
You’re a sick man. real sick.
Are you on medication? I’ll bet chips you are.
Walk into a redneck bar and say, “Hey redneck!” Or walk into a gay bar (your kith) and say, “Hey f*ggot!” In other words your point is dumb.
Sorry Bemused, but I’ll bet if you walked into an Alaska roadhouse, you’d get your butt kicked without even opening your mouth.
Heh – sorry…. couldn’t resist….
The point was that members who share characteristics are have a certain license to use language that would be considered offensive is used by outsiders. We seem to agree.
Naah…I actually get along pretty good in country bars…fter everybody stares at me out of the corner of their eyes for about 15 minutes. Be polite, tip well but not ostentatiously, and avoid talking politics at all costs.
Just non-prescription ethanol.
Though, it must be said that calling somebody a term whose only reason for existence is to be offensive, and then acting surprised when they are offended, is a little like throwing a rock at a window and being surprised when it breaks. It reveals a certain poverty of intelligence. Not to mention a narrow and bigoted mind.
Did that post go on to say her step mother hated irony, as well as Mexicans?
That would be too perfect!!
No, the point is you have no point. You’re well screwed and far from home dude.
brad_sk
wroteforwarded the Obama talking point:Only Michelle can answer for herself, but I concede that’s probably true. But the truth is, brad, there is NO political figure that has been so thoroughly vilified by the MSM in such a short time since Clarence Thomas.
Palin is and Thomas was targeted for character assassination for the same reason: Liberals in general and Democrats in particular don’t want to see minorities rising to the top except on their specified terms. Black leaders would have been delighted to see just about any black jurist other than Clarence Thomas replace Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court, because he is a rare Constitutional constructionist who rejects judicial activism (and thus much of the Affirmative Action agenda); Uberfeminists like Gloria Steinem should be happy about a mother who has accomplished what Palin has; instead, Steinem is viciously disdainful of Palin because she’s pro-life.
Thomas didn’t have the advantage of nationally-syndicated conservative talk radio or Fox News Channel. He had to face the full-court press of the press all alone for a week or so. I still remember watching Tom Brokaw sitting alongside an analyst during breaks in Thomas’ Senate testimony: Feminist scholar Catherine MacKinnon, who would do little more than tell Brokaw how she knew Thomas had to be lying. Thomas didn’t have to do interviews, but if he had, he would have faced what eventually Palin will — a long list of “gotcha!” questions that Obama will not likely face now that Tim Russert has died.
There is no doubt about the fact that the MSM wants Obama in the White House, and are willing to be manipulated and slanted to accomplish it. You seem to be afraid that with enough preparation, Palin can continue her winning streak. Don’t worry, brad, the crucible will be nice and hot for Palin; you just have to wait. Meanwhile, there’s finally some heat on Obama, and with his snippiness and stumbling lately, it’s clear he’s getting noticably nervous about the coronation being placed on hold.
No they don’t have a license to call each other names they wouldn’t want to be called themselves. It’s something called respect. Ever see professional soldiers call each other “Baby killer?” No. You won’t. The same way you won’t hear your brother leftists call each other “Commie”.
Bill Cosby constantly emphasizes that Blacks can no longer blame whites for holding them down, because they are doing it to themselves and one of those ways is with their racial slurs
When Other ethnic entertainers in all genre are held to the same ethics that the Sharptons of the world hold whites, then and only then will racism begin to fade from the national lexicon.
And the fact that you seem to think it’s OK for blacks to use racial slurs against each other and degrade each other and damage their standing in the community as a whole, but claim to be sensitive to their needs I find insulting and degrading to not only blacks but all minorities. Your attitude likens you to magnanimous and caring plantation owner who lets his slaves carry on like they want but still shackles human beings with condescension and welfare.
