Who was behind the Sambo smear?

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 8, 2008 12:30 PM

Over the weekend, I noted the scurrilous claim of a left-wing blogger who “reported” the hearsay rumor that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin called Obama a “Sambo” and Hillary Clinton a “bitch.”

Even the nutballs at the Daily Kos deleted a posting about the smear.

But it’s still out there.

Who was behind the attack? Macranger takes a look at the Democrat political operatives who helped spread the smear.

But, she is a threat because she is an unknown, and with fresh ideas that Washington insiders don’t want to hear or, especially, don’t want the public to hear. This story was on a thread, Friday, I think. A poster documented their live help with Ebay to try and get this logo page removed, but he met with resistance. There was also a story that Huffpo had individual posting pages for each Palin child. The comments were pretty sick, but it’s to be expected from those people. The L.A. Progressive had been a Liberal “Destroy ‘The Man’ and the COnservatives/Republicans underground newspaper a long time ago that had drifted into obscurity due to the fact that people just plain get tired of reading things from those that never have anything good to say and are always complaining and whining about something.

Appaerntly, along with the Liberals new found tenacity for hatred and libelous attacks on those who do not think and act as they do, they had become sentimental for the good old days and decided they could be even better at the slime that was being produced out there. With the belief that the thought patterns of the Liberal Hate Mongers have is actually the majority think of this country, they decided to re-launch the old format and make it bigger, better, more disgisting and do it in electronic form.

Their only goal is to push the Liberal “Progressive” thoughts and beliefs upon the entire world, starting in this country, and they are not above illegal and dishonest means to attain it.

I will just never understand what is so “Progressive” about these Liberals who call themselves that. For if what they do and say and how they act is progress…they can keep it, I want nothing to do with it.

So, is the problem with the character’s cuteness? His intelligence? His blackness? His ability to actually formulate a plan that succeeds? Is it because Lil’ black Sambo was a “boy?” Do they have a problem with butter?

I guess I too would have a problem with all those things if the story was intended to demonize smart little black kids, but this old story is about an Indian kid, whose skin was darkened from playing out in the sun, not an African kid.

Maybe they are offended, in this case, because of the connection between Biden and his Indians in 7/11 gaff?

You are correct. My wife and I enjoyed breakfast there the last time we were in Santa Barbara. I always liked Sambo’s pancakes than IHOP’s. The Sambo story that I remember featured a black boy, at least the recording I had, and listened to often as a child, which was done in the ’40’s had a picture of a black Sambo on the cover, but made no mention of locale, if I recall.

Sambo’s restaurant came under strong pressure in the ’70’s to change its name and created an Indian Sambo character to try to save its name. It didn’t work so the chain adopted the name of “Seasons” and changed its menu.

Seasons lasted only a few years before either going out of business or having locations bought out by Denny’s or other simialr restaurant chains.

Never understood how Sambo became so derogitory as a name. I always thought of him as inventive and a hero. Someone who could be admired.

My parents bought the children’s book, Little Black Sambo in the early 1950’s. It was one of my favorites, as was the follow-along Peter Pan book and record (LP). I vividly recall the cover of that book which featured a little dark skinned boy wearing a turban, being chased around a palm tree.

Back then, you know, before the Civl Rights movement, there were no black people featured in media, with perhaps the exception of the Aunt Jemima brand maple syrup labels.

To suggest that the character Sambo was changed from black to Indian for appearance sakes, is just flat wrong. Sambo was, and is, an Indian character.

In actuality, the his race or color wasn’t an issue, until political correctness raised it’s ugly head, and made it an issue.

Well, right or wrong, the assumption before the 60’s was that Sambo was black, and being black, was from Africa, turban notwithstanding. The recording did not specify locale, so I guess that was left up to the reader or listener many of whom possibly thought it took place, wrongly, in Africa.

And yes, the Sambo chain specifically changed the appearance of the Sambo character to a lighter skinned Indian boy and empasised the fact that the story indeed took place in India, with the tiger being indiginous to India.

Sambo’s attempt to appeace the PC crowd in the 70’s didn’t work not matter that it corrected the Sambo charachter and story. Too many people just coundn’t get over the name, or didn’t want to defend it and be considered racist, and the chain bowed to pressure figuring it just wasn’t worth the fight

I’ve never heard that term used in a racially derogatory sense. It is important to note that the dictionary definition of ‘uppity’ is ‘affecting an air of inflated self-esteem — snobbish.’ That’s what we meant by uppity when we used it in the mill village where I grew up.

If a Democrat had said the word (uppity), we would be hearing over and over about context. Or in the case of President Carter or Sen. Biden calling Sen. Obama a “boy”, it would be ignored. Since a republican said something, apparently we should throw denotative definitions out the window and focus on connotations.

It still doesn’t change the fact that Dick & Sharon Price seem to be guilty of libeling Gov. Palin.

I don’t know whether the article is based on truths, but it’s NOT impossible for Palin to “hate Eskimos” while being married to one. My stepmother married my father, a Mexican, and has two sons with him. But she regularly made racist comments re Mexicans anyway. Go figure.

I do believe she is a ruthless and nasty political climber who retaliates against all who do not share her views, but the Palin family does have some documented Native American ancestry. Although it sounds like the quotes would be in character for her, she and the GOP can probably defend against the Alaskan Arab thing, unless there is some pretty well documented proof she said that.

The press has to keep digging. She is definately a life-long liar and a hypocrite, so there is a ton of dirt around her. She brings to mind those high school girls who never grow out of being socially manipulative and power crazed back-stabbers. No matter how scared of her retaliation the locals may be, a friendly enough reporter with a tape recorder and the bucks to buy a few beers will have a field day in the bars.

Malkin tries to tie this to the Obama campaign, but that link is weaker than the quote itself. One wingnut says

Two members of Barack of Obama’s campaign, Dick and Sharon Price,

But you follow his link and you find two people who have created a page for themselves on an Obama site that has almost no content. They don’t work for the campaign.

But since we’re getting off topic – How about the fact that the word “uppity” lists a quote from the New York Times on several dictionary sites.

You can’t ‘give’ offense, someone has to ‘take it’. Calling people derogatory names is my RIGHT as an American (you know, free speech)? You don’t have a right to not be offended.

I enjoy calling people ‘Yankee’ and I consider it derogatory toward a certain group of people. I expect to do business with them and I don’t expect to take anything from them, but it is descriptive (which is what language is for).

I’m tired of this culture of victimhood. . . oh poor me, somebody called me Sambo. Can you believe they called me Sambo? What an attrocity of human and civil rights. . . I can’t believe that we live in a society that permits people to call other people Sambo. THE HORROR.

Really, it isn’t against the law. It’s stupid to be offended if someone calls you Sambo (even if it is derogatory). Would it be LESS offensive if they called you ‘retarded’, or ’stupid’, or ‘ignorant’? Would it mean anything more if they switched the words?

I’m just tired of it. FREE SPEECH means you can say whatever you want. If someone wants to take offense, then that is their problem.

I don’t know whether the article is based on truths, but it’s NOT impossible for Palin to “hate Eskimos” while being married to one. My stepmother married my father, a Mexican, and has two sons with him. But she regularly made racist comments re Mexicans anyway. Go figure.

Did that post go on to say her step mother hated irony, as well as Mexicans?

    That would be too perfect!!

    Michelle,
BTW do you know why Sarah Palin is not giving interviews to media? If this were a someone you didn’t like, I am sure you would be ripping them [off] here considering this close to election.

Only Michelle can answer for herself, but I concede that’s probably true. But the truth is, brad, there is NO political figure that has been so thoroughly vilified by the MSM in such a short time since Clarence Thomas.

Palin is and Thomas was targeted for character assassination for the same reason: Liberals in general and Democrats in particular don’t want to see minorities rising to the top except on their specified terms. Black leaders would have been delighted to see just about any black jurist other than Clarence Thomas replace Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court, because he is a rare Constitutional constructionist who rejects judicial activism (and thus much of the Affirmative Action agenda); Uberfeminists like Gloria Steinem should be happy about a mother who has accomplished what Palin has; instead, Steinem is viciously disdainful of Palin because she’s pro-life.

Thomas didn’t have the advantage of nationally-syndicated conservative talk radio or Fox News Channel. He had to face the full-court press of the press all alone for a week or so. I still remember watching Tom Brokaw sitting alongside an analyst during breaks in Thomas’ Senate testimony: Feminist scholar Catherine MacKinnon, who would do little more than tell Brokaw how she knew Thomas had to be lying. Thomas didn’t have to do interviews, but if he had, he would have faced what eventually Palin will — a long list of “gotcha!” questions that Obama will not likely face now that Tim Russert has died.

There is no doubt about the fact that the MSM wants Obama in the White House, and are willing to be manipulated and slanted to accomplish it. You seem to be afraid that with enough preparation, Palin can continue her winning streak. Don’t worry, brad, the crucible will be nice and hot for Palin; you just have to wait. Meanwhile, there’s finally some heat on Obama, and with his snippiness and stumbling lately, it’s clear he’s getting noticably nervous about the coronation being placed on hold.

No they don’t have a license to call each other names they wouldn’t want to be called themselves. It’s something called respect. Ever see professional soldiers call each other “Baby killer?” No. You won’t. The same way you won’t hear your brother leftists call each other “Commie”.

Bill Cosby constantly emphasizes that Blacks can no longer blame whites for holding them down, because they are doing it to themselves and one of those ways is with their racial slurs

When Other ethnic entertainers in all genre are held to the same ethics that the Sharptons of the world hold whites, then and only then will racism begin to fade from the national lexicon.

And the fact that you seem to think it’s OK for blacks to use racial slurs against each other and degrade each other and damage their standing in the community as a whole, but claim to be sensitive to their needs I find insulting and degrading to not only blacks but all minorities. Your attitude likens you to magnanimous and caring plantation owner who lets his slaves carry on like they want but still shackles human beings with condescension and welfare.
