Rice and racial beans at the State Department
Condi Rice is so wrong.
She thinks what the State Department needs is skin-based diversity. Here she is, counting racial beans the way the Left always does — and talking like Bill “Looks Like America” Clinton. Wrong, wrong, wrong:
Rice laments lack of black diplomats
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Monday it was “unacceptable” that there were so few black people like herself in the US diplomatic corps.
“I want to see a Foreign Service that looks as if black Americans are part of this great country,” Rice told a gathering of black colleges and universities in Washington.
“I have lamented that I can go into a meeting at the Department of State,” said Rice, the second black person to become secretary of state after her predecessor Colin Powell.
“And, as a matter of fact, I can go into a whole day of meetings at the Department of State and actually rarely see somebody who looks like me, and that’s just not acceptable,” she added.
Who cares what they look like? It’s what they think like that matters. As I’ve blogged here many , many, many, many , many , many , many times over the years, Foggy Bottom is plagued by CAIR capitulationists and America-lasters who put appeasement above American sovereignty.
We should worry less about skin pigment, and more about skin thickness. We should worry less about skin lightness or darkness, and more about dhimmitude.
I’ll be blunt: Hearing such 9/10 talk from the Secretary of State on the seventh anniversary week of the 9/11 attacks makes me want to throw up.
***
Meanwhile, here’s the latest Looks Like Al Qaeda graphic for you:

A jury in the U.K. has found three men guilty of conspiracy to murder in the trans-Atlantic airline “liquid bomb” plot.
Abdulla Ahmed Ali, Assad Sarwar and Tanvir Hussain were found guilty of plotting to kill “persons unknown,” but not necessarily on planes.
The prosecutor told jurors during the trial that the men planned to attack United Airlines, American Airlines and Air Canada flights by smuggling liquid explosives onto jets and detonating them in-flight.

The upside is Rice will be gone in a few months.
I always felt lke a lone voice in the wilderness, but I haven’t been remotely impressed with Ms. Rice’s performance. The most recent screwup was being blindsided by Russia invading Georgia. The first colossal screwup was not cleaning house at the State Dept. when she took the job.
Does she remember that famous line about “content of character” vs. color of skin?
I don’t know why people think Condi’s some conservative. She’s a Joe Leiberman liberal…which is to say liberals who have a clear sense of our outter threats.
However, I do think having a few brown, yellow, red, polka-dotted faces in the diplomatic corp would be great, I’m simply not willing to lower the standards to find those people. Rise up, or go home…as I say.
I think, she’s chiding Blacks to enter into public service.
No more…No less
Condi, please just shut up.
Sorry, couldn’t control myself.
Michelle, you are absolutely correct.
My feelings exactly.
Well I’m glad she never ran for President.
Perhaps the real problem with conservsatism these days is that we haven’t developed effective filters to identify and keep out people who say they are conservative, when they are not. Moreover this aspect has ben especially pernicious during the past 20 years when it became fashionable to be conservative if you wanted to move up in government and politics..e’g. Arnold Schwarzenaager
Condi,
This is the least of your worries… or at least it should be. She’s gone the way of Capt. Lettucehead. I won’t miss them when they are gone.
Call me naive, but I was looking at that like she was encouraging black youths to enter the State Department. However, I certainly wish anyone would find “work” other than becoming a talking head. I’d rather see the State Department disbanded.
And I can go into almost any NBA locker room and rarely see anybody who looks like me. So?
So, as the Secretary of State, what did she do to encourage people of color to become diplomats? I really don’t know, but now it seems like she is pandering. I also wonder if some of the people in the audience are among those who criticized Condi Rice for being a part of the Bush Administration.
I at one time had respect for Condi. This businss of race has gotten to be a really, really tired point. At least, she won’t have to search for blacks at the State Dept. much longer.
L
I also wonder if there are some in the Bush administration who really don’t care that much about 9/11 except for the fact that it gave Bush the credibility to continue on politically when in fact he was already vacillating between going left or staying right as he had promised before the attack. GW Bush would have ended up like dad without it… a one-term wonder
Want to be a black diplomat?
1. Go to college and study poli sci and history, and/or perhaps geography.
2. Take Foreign Service exam and pass.
Perhaps if half of blacks didn’t drop out of high school, and perhaps if those that do go on to college studied something other than “black studies” or education, we might have more black diplomats.
It’s your Department, Ms. Rice. Please fire the whiteys and hire more coloreds. /sarc off, and back to vomiting with rage over the continued fecklessness of the US State Department.
http://www.airsicknessbags.com/
Sorry folks, but I second this. I’m a fan of hers, too. Shoot me.
Condi never really seemed to be very conservative. I do not even think she is really very strong on security. I like her, just do not trust her, like I like alot of democrats, but cannot trust them.
94% of people that look like Condi are democrats. That takes the tiny 13% of the American population down to around three quarters of 1 percent of the population as acceptable Republican Administration Appointees. So, basically having had Condi and Colin in the two most powerfull cabinet positions should give her an awefull lot to be thankfull for, but instead, she has to see the glass is half empty.
Are there enough “blacks” on this blog? When I come here, I just do not see enough people like me, da-huh.
I would like to think that underneath the wording – that she was wishing that more black Americans would enter public service and move into diplomatic roles.
No one knows her true intent, but if I had to guess, I would think that may have been her reasoning.
If that’s the case – it was poorly expressed. And THAT is the sad part, given her role in the government. To have a diplomat who can’t express those thoughts clearly….ummm…. not good.
I had exactly the same thought as I was posting, JS, but failed to include it.
Bingo!
that photo on AQ is a bit scary…many of those could be mistaken for hispanic something we know is happening on our southern border…
I agree what are their qualifications and what do they think and how do they handle themselves in stressful situations and most of all will they support what benefits “we the people” rather than that of big business or the one world order elites…all matter more than what color they might be.
So its more important that people look like her?
Wouldn’t that be racial profiling?
Don’t they have a diversity program at State? It’s always good to have diversity and sometime you have to work at it. I am sure there are plenty of qualified candidates “of diversity” out there.
Based on the performance of our current State Department, new people would be a good thing. If our reputation in the world is so bad (per Democrat talking points), why is the State Departemnt not working on that issue in full force?
Well, maybe our bad reputation is a lie. They are “just making it up”.
This is a perfect example of how we should be profiling!
Rice should resign. Today! She obviously puts her color before her country.
“The best time to plant a tree is 30 years ago. The second best time is now.”
I suspect it takes a while to grow a diplomat. How ’bout the black community change its culture to promote succeeding in school, instead of treating failure as ‘phat’. John McWhirter nailed it in his book “Losing the Race”.
I’m surprised that anyone is surprised–
BOTH by the anti-American attitude at the DOS…
and by Rice’s thin skin…
Don’t ask me. I’m in favor of changing the name of the Department of Defense back to the War Department.
ECS
Malkin demagoguery at its finest here. Rice is not advocating quotas or even affirmative action. She is simply encouraging folks of color to work hard and consider a career in the foreign service. It’s a given that such folks otherwise be qualified to serve in the DOS. I’m not sure why any reasonable conservative would have a problem with encouraging bright and qualified minorities to consider government service. There’s a weird sort of reverse political correctness on this site which is in its own bizarre way a form of dogmatic PC.
Don’t mean to hijack this, but when I saw it I thought: “The best time to drill an oil well was 10 years ago. The second best time is now.”
ECS
dakine : did you even read the article at the top? Rice was clearly espousing her disapproval of not having blacks in places of authority at State. No where in her meme does she even refer to skill and character needed. Michelle hit the nail on the head with Rice and I, for one , will gladly hold her hair back while she rightly throws up then it’ll be my turn.
Gee,
I long for the good old days, when ______was Secretary of State..
I think, after you’ve run out of possibilities, you’ll find, Condi Rice is head and shoulders above the rest.
Is it remotely possible that the McCain administration (should it happen) could find a competent white male for Secretary of State? Richard Armitage, shouts the RINO establishment! Okay, I give up.
Yes, Rice will soon be gone along with her lame boss. (And I don’t mean “lame duck,” but lame.) But the damage these clowns have done to the country is unimaginable. That the vast majority of conservative intellectuals did not call them on their ineptitude is also depressing. Even as a white male I figured out years ago these two were losers (and yes, Colin Powell is no better). To top it off, Condi and Colin are Obama supporters! What more does one need to know? But to be fair, I rather suspect George will be voting for Obama as well.
Somewhere, Putin and the rest of our nuclear enemies are laughing their a$$es off.
The reason there are so few black people in government is because there are fewer black people that are qualified for those jobs. The reason for this lies in racist liberal policies like affirmative action, and a failed public education system, that have created a culture within black America that thinks success can only be achieved if it is given to them.
Rather than lamenting the problem, (easy) she should lament the causes and take steps to correct them (hard).
Conni, you need to work on finding out if Kim Jong Il is dead or not. Until then, kindly shut the trap.
Maybe if the ‘leaders’ of the black community would stop vilifying Condi, Justice Thomas, Michael Steele and other successful black conservatives, and treated them with the respect they deserved, more minorities would choose public service.
Oh, and here’s me thinking it was ability to do the job that matters.
If seeing somebody at work who looks like you is your biggest issue, then take a mirror to work with you – maybe then you’ll have time for those other annoying issues, like, hmm I dunno, the problems facing the USA?
This should not be a problem. Keep firing State Department Officers until we meet the Condi Continuum and tell the rest to shut up. 98.6% of all consultes need to be closed and the rest reduced.
As Europe and Britain are the EU ONE embassy, a small one, should do.
Mexico and Latin America? A Federal Parole officer meeting with an MS 13 parolee should do.
China? Let Wal-Mart handle it.
Canada? Why not, harmless enough cranks.
Persian Gulf and the Pacific Rim? Department of Defense, Aircraft Carries and such.
There IS a reason we put the State Department in Foggy Bottom. They do make a pretty good beer.
Condi Rice is so wrong and will soon be gone. Let us hope and pray we do better next time-she is a good person and I wish her well–somewhere else.
9/11. Remember the dead, think revenge.
Fly your flag good people.

Hey Obama-Want to see a Bitter American?
Look at your wife.
(got the hat, know it’s true)
ECS, That’s the context where I usually dust off that quote. It’s a good one.
What happened to her? I used to like Condi Rice.
Meanwhile in Liberia, what is the ethnicity of those folks?
the state department put the kiboosh on the building
of the new LNP HQ.
Why?
There is an old saying “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish, and you feed him for a life time”
We are just giving Liberians fish. The Poverty, in Liberia is depressing couldn’t our State Department be doing a better job?
The kids in Monrovia use a burned out church for school. Where is Oprah? They have dirt, sticks and rocks to play with…we could be doing better by our country’s support. Liberia is about the size of Tennessee. It could be a model Government a Bell Weather for other African Countrys. We have opportunities we are not taking advantage of.
I am a little disappointed in her position on African Countries.
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/li.html
Then there is Zimbabwe they are having a humanitarian crisis.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601116&sid=aBEvDE_n1QCk&refer=africa
I still like her. Despite a few hiccups, she hasn’t done a bad job compared to Warren Christopher and Madeline Albright. I just don’t want her to have any higher office than she has right now.
Rice is an asshat.
Anyone who thinks the Bush administration is conservative hasn’t been paying attention.
I’ll be glad to see them go. Unfortunately, if McCain wins we won’t. If Obama wins they’ll be replaced by something worse (if that’s even possible).
MNUSMC, c’mon man. Take what she said in context. Read between the lines. The kneejerk reaction thing to every little word or action is so prevalent around here at times that it often feels like dKos or HuffPo. Mock and disproportionate outrage seems to be the calling card of both the extreme left and right. Sec. Rice’s goal is a laudable one and should be applauded rather than childishly derided.
What do diplomats do if not talk?
Anything else?
…crickets…
Was she in diplomat (i.e., BS) mode when she said that?
Sort of like saying “talks were frank and candid”, when what really happened is that the parties threw heavy glass ashtrays at each other, or worse.
Or, was she clearly saying exactly what most readers believe she said?
If diplomats, of all people, need to have apologists say, “What they really meant to say was…”; then, perhaps it is time for them to find another job.
And I speak as one who used to greatly admire Ms. Rice.
Sincerely.
Why?
There was that Jefferson fellow, but he didn’t look like Condi either. There WAS Miss Sally, but let’s not go there just now – more a case of Internal Affairs.
Maybe the reason we have so few black diplomats is that so many are honing their
mad skeelzskills as community organizers.Once they’ve perfected their art, then they can move up to serve as “global organizers.”
I was reading this on the crawl of Imus in the morning. Look at the money spent on this birthday. The median age for these folks to live to, coincidentally the same 40.
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1105ap_swazilands_birthday.html
So Condi Rice bemoans diversity in the U.S.A. State Department, what does she think of the unequal treatment of many Africans?
I really hope that Robert Mugabe, is out of power before President George W Bush, leaves office. Please Mr President, get rid of one more ruthless dictator, Free Zimbabwe.
Our DOS is full of idiots who bash America and want to appease our enemies. Rice should be more concerned with getting rid of these jokers.
Here’s my “diversity” plan:
Appoint John Bolton Secretary of State. Give him a hardhat and a bulldozer. Raze Foggy Bottom. Start over with people who really do have America’s interests at heart.
Look everyone! dakine’s going brah-less today!
But seriously, dakster. When it comes to jerking knees, you’re the Michael Flatley of michellemalkin.com
Erin go bragh! Or is it “Err ‘n go, brah.”
Using the word “unacceptable” in regards to the quantity of any given skin color in relation to a particular job category is “unacceptable”.
I have admired the performance of Condi, but she began to loose my respect when I heard her views on affirmative action.
Now she publicly implies that a wrong has been committed by her use of the word “unacceptable”. This is beginning to sound racist (on her part).
Scratch that last statement, it is racist, pure and simple.
I think what Dr. Rice was doing was trying to persuade blacks that diplomacy is a noble profession, and that they should pursue it. Andrew Young was once the US ambassador to the UN. I’m sure the US has had other black diplomats in its history.
Holding up Colin Powell was a great way to make her message resonate with her audience, though. Perhaps recruiting blacks into the diplomatic field is something she can work on in private life. *out*
Condi, What are you saying
Geeeeeessss!!!
What did I tell you? Get those braces and you won’t have this problem. Seriously, this one statement says more about the past 8 years than any 6 books Woodward could churn out. Why she’s not Obama’s running mate is beyond me.
That is so mean spirited
granite said:#15 I agree.
She’s probably just letting her true “colors” out a few weeks before endorsing Obamahole.
Interesting thing about her saying it’s “unacceptable.” Used same language in regards to Russia attacking Georgia.
Diplo-speak for “I am too pathetically weak to do anything about it.”
If Obama is elected things will get simpler. All those meaningless Departments will go away and we will be left with the:
Ministry of Truth
Ministry of Love
Ministry of Peace
I like the appointing Bolton idea, except I would throw in the old Roman concept of establishing discipline and order through decimation.
Too bad Miss Rice can’t influence their hiring practices since she isn’t the head of the State Depart…oh wait.
Her statement is stupid on so many levels that I have to wonder when exactly she incurred the brain injury. Seriously, this is the woman that many conservatives, including myself, thought was smart and possibly ready to be an executive? I remember reading somewhere that she wanted to be president of some college after her service. Well, that seems to be the best place for her now.
Bingo!
Deserving of a rim shot!
Actually, I thought I’d read that what she wanted to do was to become commissioner of the NFL.
dakine, the tip-off is Rice’s use of the word “unacceptable”, as opposed to “unfortunate” or “disappointing”.
Libs love to use that word when they refer to “something I don’t like, that other people need to change”.
Merit, and only merit, should be the criterion used to select Foreign Service officers and State Dept. employees.
Ditto.
Condi Rice seems like a smart decent person to me. However, I wonder why she thinks it is possible to set up a real peace between Israel and the Hamas / Palastine / Hizbolla terrorists. She must have a clearer vision of the future than I do. I’m handicapped by history and experience.
John Bibb
tell me if I’m wrong, but isn’t most of the US diplomatic corp made up of Bush hating liberals?
Its no wonder there are few black people like herself there. More of them are probably like Obama.
I hope McCain, should he win, not make Bush’s mistake of not replacing the libs whio hate him and have been activily hostile toward the administration.
He probably will as he touts “working across the aisle”. So State will no doubt keep up the hostility. If McCain makes the mistake of not sweeping house in State and AG offices he will pay for it.
Dakine,
Be fair, not all posters jumped on this as a negative statement. I also think she was trying to encourage young black men and women to give federal service a look.
Also people, let us not lose sight of the fact that Sec. Rice serves the president. She does not make her own policy so we do not truly know how she would PERSONALLY handle these situations. Perspective.
Oh please, please, pretty please, can I be Secretary in the Ministry Of Silly Walks?
Could it be Uncle Ben’s “converted” Rice?
Worst Sec Of State Evah.
I’m not getting her larger point, sorry. I can’t rush to judgment, though, because Condi Rice has not played the race card and she’s no victim.
I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one, too.
So she is saying that its “not acceptable” to see a majority of Caucasians in a country who has a majority of Caucasians?
Tell me, WHY is this not acceptable?
Better yet..WHY are you even concerned that African-Americans do not strive to hold those positions? Isn’t this America and everyone can choose their own path (within their financial and physical means)?
I would have pursued her job, but in reality, I was born in the wrong “circles”. This is not a bad thing, its just reality (and I am NOT African American)!
So, Dr. Condi, what are you saying? Are you saying that racism is at fault? If you are, then PROVE where racism was committed!
Which implies that black Americans are NOT part of this great country. I think that’s what Condi is really saying. Which makes me wonder, why would she say such a thing?
Hadenough #70, with all due respect, I have two words for you: Madeline
NonbrightAlbright.Ms. Rice, concerned with the faces she sees in the morning. The male dominated ME frightened by gun toten Sarah Palin. I do believe that islam sez that women are one of the three most dangerous threats to them in the world. They probably were not counting Ms. Rice in as one the most dangerous group. I know what you are going to say, they are against her, Palin for different reasons but I don’t think a certain, one’s, muslim faith has anything to do with his widespread ME support. The real story is not women with guns or women with gripes it’s the middle east in general, they’re angry that Bush has gone after the islamists. It’s an outright, well as outright as they get, declaration of the support for the islamists. It is the story of the failure of US diplomats to see the forest for the trees. Perhaps because all they are looking for are smiling faces.
In related news the pols are worried about American internal NBC security. They let in the future perpetrators, heck, in many cases they gave them jobs in the guvment. But don’t worry they are going to make things safe for everyone. Maybe that’s why the dems have put up a community organizer in chief as their candidate. What bothers me is that with the conditions that they have created the only way to prevent it is a totalitarian state. Turning the whole country in to an airport security zone, What they have allowed and continue to deny really has me angry. Secretary Rice is worried about “people that look like her at work’ this is indicative of the problem, nationwide, all 57 states.
I have no problem with Secretary Rice lamenting the lack of “diversity” as long as she doesn’t engage in reverse discrimination to address it.
The interesting thing is that most of the senior people at State are probably Clinton holdovers. As Clinton appointees, they only confirm the “do as I say, not as I do” democrat philosophy. The biggest mistake W made in 2001 was keeping these people around to undermine him.
George Bush? Us? Why? Yes Mugabe is a ruthless SOB. We have lost too many now worrying about other people’s SOB.
If the Mad Man Mugabe offends you YOU go do something about it. Remember:
Africa for the Africans?
If your hip set off the metal detectors you might understand. Cold weather can be a problem. Yes we do great things for people. But too many young men are never coming home. I could give you a long list of good guys who never got to be in their 60s, but they would just be names.
We sell our young people too cheap. The rest of the world isn’t worth even one of my grandsons. Two of them are in uniform now.
Yes, and can we also say Cyrus Vance, the genious Sec of State under Carter?
Hmm. seemed that something rather important and catastrophic happened in Iran during his stint among other Carter admin international catastrophes.
Rice is probably no more than 3rd worst Sec of State in recent history.
Slavery was SUCH a mistake…
Well saying that it is “not acceptable” when the “head count” lacks enough of a particular “color”, is racist because it implies that a wrong has occurred to prevent this color from being seen more in these positions.
What other “not acceptable” action is responsible for the outcome (when taken in context with her words)?
To be non-racist, she would have used a completely different phrase instead of lamenting about color of faces.
“I don’t understand why more African Americans do not pursue these jobs” would have been better. The way she said it implied pure racism.
I am tired of underachievement or the lack of color in positions (or the abundance of color in prisons) being blamed on others or being “unacceptable”.
Go to the source (the black community) and correct (or encourage), but do not use the phrase “not acceptable”. Who is it not acceptable to..you? and why is this of concern to the rest of us unless racism is implied?
She’s just lonely.
BTW: Racism is racism. “Reverse” discrimination? Whats that? Being NON-Discriminatory?
Geeeesh!
What’s mean spirited about it? Afraid we’ll scare someone?
ECS
http://theturkeyfootbrand.blogspot.com/
Here’s her audience.
She also stated:
Equal Opportunity isn’t enough. No, wherever there is an underrepresentation of an ethnic group -things must change because “we” aren’t diversified enough. Well, there aren’t many black men who work in the pharmaceutical industry. What should we do about it? Obviously something is run amok and needs to be fixed. Call me crazy but perhaps, they prefer another line of work.
Thank you 30, that confirms my point.
You mean in the legal pharmaceutical industry.
ECS
That’s actually very a good point. As much as I loath Rice, one has to be fair about this. Maybe once that buffoon Armitage becomes Secretary of State, he has push her down to 4th.
ECS,
Yes, of course.
It’s unfortunate that many black men cut their lives short by dealing drugs. Truly sad.
JamieD,
You’re welcome!
We should not “force” people into jobs just as we should not “force” people out of jobs; based solely on race or skin color.
Likewise, we should not complain based solely on skin color unless we are bringing attention to a “wrong” that must be corrected.
A lack of “diversity” is not any indication of a problem that must be corrected.
Show me evidence of wrongdoing and I will be the first to advocate a correction. But first you must identify the wrongdoing. Lack of diversity is not a “problem” unless it is a result of a crime. The lack of it, by itself, is not a crime and does not automatically equate to a crime as Dr. Rice has inferred.
“As a matter of fact, I can go into a whole week’s worth of NBA games and actually rarely see somebody who looks like me, and that’s just not acceptable,” the skinny white guy said.
JamieD,
The point I was trying to make is that anyone, even a Secretary of State, is entitled to their opinion as long as they don’t try to use the law to force their opinion on the rest of us.
Too many high level government people feel it necessary to right every perceived (by themselves) wrong even when it means punishing innocent Americans.
When I saw this it finally really hit home that Condi has gone native. She’s been hangin’ out with New World Order proponents at the State Department and she’s embraced this diversity meme that means nothing to me.
If the minority faces have no talent, there will be no real change in the State Department. These diplomat lifers only work for themselves and their liberal agenda, not the USA. They embrace the whole “We Are The World” instead of their own country’s interests. This is why I could never work in such a place with my knowledge of history.
It’s not pretty to see how isolationism, if we only had left those poor Muslims alone none of this would have every happened, attitude has manifested itself. These “diplomats” have become “world citizens” that want the UN to run our foreign policy.
What’s even scarier is Condi Rice is beginning to sound like Ike Eisenhower’s granddaughter which isn’t pretty. If Condi wants to be a Dem, why didn’t she just say so in the first place?
Man, where is John Bolton, who actually stood up for something, when you need him? I’m beginning to think that Condi was an affirmative action hire with no real talent. Am I wrong?
Yes, I agree. I just wanted to voice the audacity of automatically equating the lack of diversity to a “problem” and how this perception is one of the core problems creating racism in America.
“I have a dream where little black men and little white women will be given diplomatic jobs based not on the color of their skin, but on the content of their character.”
–Bizarro Condi Rice
Arizona Neanderthal,
My husband, retired career Amry, is in Liberia doing something about it. We are involved in AFRICA why not Do it right! WE are spending our TAX dollars in AFRICA George W Bush has an embargo on Zimbabwe right now. I STILL hope Mugabe is gone by the time George W Bush leaves office because I don’t see Obama taking a lead where he left off. My Brother in law is also In the Army and still Serving. Neither one of them put qualifications on their service to this country.
My original point, to the list of suffering African Countries, was this: If Condi Rice, really was concerned about People of Color, why are the African Countries, we are involved with no better off, after we have invested so Much? So she is concerned about who serves in the State Department, more then her performance in the State Department. This is what I take away from her statement.
Cosmo:
I hope that was a joke and not an actual quotation. If those are her words then she needs some instruction in “diversity”. Not the California definition, but the non-racist version (I think the non-racist version would be called training for “oversensitivity”).
