There’s lots of debate here in the comments thread and across the blogosphere about whether the McCain camp is overreacting, whether Obama should get the benefit of the doubt for using a common old metaphor at the wrong place and time, etc., etc.
Was he being malicious? Probably not. But it’s yet another in a long line of rhetorical gaffes that demonstrate his ineptitude.
Or, as one commenter below summed it up succinctly: “The guy’s a jerk.”

Of course the Liberals are crying foul, saying he was just trying to use an old saying…and that might have flown…except that it was what he said AFTER that showed he not only knew what he was saying, he knew EXACTLY who he was saying it about and what exactly he meant.
I heard the comment. I heard the people laugh and applaud him. He was clearly off script, off prompter and adlibbing it. And everyone there knew he was referring to Sarah and John. They knew that he had just called her a pig and him an old fish, and they approved of it and applauded him for it.
Is this what he meant by no one in his campaign is allowed to say and do such things? Does this mean that he is going to have to fire himself?
No, of course not. All he did was give these hate-filled, evil Liberals new things to call Sarah and new photoshop alternatives to choose from.

Yes this a non issue but the speeches are written and every word and phrase is examined carefully. He either has bad judgement or he meant the inference to Palin’s pit bull comment.

I do find it hilarious how on other sites the same people saying Obama has been taken out of context (which is a tad true) are the same people who have no problem trashing Palin’s teenage daughter and saying her Down’s Syndrome son is a stage prop.

I do not give Obama the benefit of the doubt on this one. Why? Because even if he wasn’t aware how some might take this, he should have noticed that his entire audience rose to their feet applauding that line. If it was an innocent mistake, then he should have quieted the crowd right then and straightened it out.
If Obama wasn’t aware of the implications of his statement, then he was the dumbest one in a very large room.

I think the “old fish” reference that followed this lipstick comment was referencing John McCain. OLD fish. Most of the media is not catching this. That reference is what leads me to believe the lipstick and fish reference IS referring to Palin and McCain… despite the denials of the Obama Implosion machine.
His comment was obviously directed at Mrs. Palin and if anyone says it wasn’t is willingly blind to the truth. I agree with those that say his campaign is imploding but the media will carry him through like it did john f’ing kerry. There will also be voter fraud that will be overlooked unless it is suspected that a district came out in McCain/Palin’s favor then there will be demands of recounts. Actually I don’t think the lipstick remark was his own, someone wrote it for him because there weren’t any er’s or uh’s in it same as when he mentioned his muslum faith.
So much for that politics of hope and change and that new shiny glow. Obummer fanatics are making excuses for this empty suit on websites like Politico, saying that the whole “lipstick on a pig” comment is an “old saying.” Well, when the whole audience assumed it was an inside joke about Sarah Palin, then I think this attempt at humor is pretty lame.

Correct, FS – had Gov. palin not used the imagery in refering to herself just a week a go in her VP acceptance speech and subsequent campaign stops, it wouldn’t be out of place. But this written for Obama as a purely personal-level red-meat attack against Palin as even the Obamedia’s ABC News “Political Punch” blog noted:

His writers made a bad judgment in using this particular personal level attack mode and his complete failure to percieve how it would backfire on him bigtime with the general public (and women in particular) demonstrates he’s not the sharpest pencil in the box.
By way of demonstration: If Obama refered to himself as a “Number Two Lead Pencil”, the last line in the previous paragraph would be a personal-level cheap shot.

An Obama Presidency will encourage and hearten the Muslim world. And that’s not good for America.
He might have used the “lipstick on a pig” line as a well-kown metaphor, or he might have meant it as a direct reference to Palin’s lipstick/pit bull remark. Either way, he clearly doesn’t have the rhetorical or diplomatic skills that could magically transform Mahmoud Ahmadinejad into Mr. Rogers, as he’d like us to believe.

Look, the whole Obama is a muslim thing, and his middle name is Hussein is childish. I couldn’t care less what some guy in Iran thinks his religion is. Obama is bad for America for the simple reason that he is perceived by our enemies as weak (because he is weak).
As a public speaker, I am telling you, when you say something that visibly stirs your audience, you notice it. You certainly can’t miss a standing ovation. And the line certainly wasn’t that good.
If you say something that the audience obviously takes the wrong way, you stop right there and clear it up. He can spin it however he likes, this is just more votes for McCain/Palin.

It doesn’t really matter how BHO meant this comment. That’s not an issue. The real issue is how his comments are perceived. Perception is everything when you are in a campaign (or most other jobs, come to think of it). Anyone with half a brain would know how this comment would be perceived by many people because of the “lipstick” component of his statement. That’s what makes it bad for BHO. If he doesn’t have the good sense not to say something in a speech that would be perceived in such a way, he has no business representing the United States. The idea is downright terrifying considering Iran, Russia, and China. Think of the serious problems his gaffes like this would create.
Please note that Bob Beckel called her the exact same thing when talking to Bill Hemmer the other day. I don’t believe in coincidence.

That’s what should be the talk (subtext) of the next news cycle with Obama and his minions having to repeatedly explain that he’s really not crude and sexist.

The real problem with Sen. Obama’s “judgement” is that it is based on a world view where chauvinism is accepted, terrorists are “mainstream”, and “hope and change” masquerade for achievement. The reason he didn’t “hear” Rev. Wright is because it was just a part of what he expected to hear and it wasn’t “abnormal”. He doesn’t “hear” his own chauvinism until it is pointed out. Then, of course, he is sure you misunderstood him.

In trying times like this, Winston Churchill really comes in handy. With all that this man went through, he certainly was a gentleman with whom many Americans of opposing viewpoint should reacquaint themselves. When the media and his witless followers blew up Obummer’s ego to enormous, unattainable heights, it was to be expected that some of that extra helium would eventually be “deflated.”
My BS meter was immediately awakened when I heard Obummer promising more funds for Charter Schools while claiming that McCain only sought to cut funding to the greatest boondoggle in our country, public education. As a teacher, I’ve worked in charter schools and some worked and some were a complete mess and were just like the chaotic, “included” cesspools that I’d come from. I hear Obummer wants to reward good teachers with merit pay and get rid of the bad seeds but when you pander to the teacher’s unions of this country and take their PAC money, such as claim belies one’s actual stances in the past.
Has this guy every been accountable for a single “misstatement,” “wrong vote,” or absurdity in his short senate career? He lambasts McCain for being in the Senate way too long but at least McCain was busy leaning way over the aisle accommodating liberalism (a little too much). Where was Obummer when bipartisanship needed to happen?
Instead of making lame *ss jokes like today, how about some explanation of how he’s going to solve the following problems:
Social Security?
Public Education?
Medicare/Medicaid?
Illegal Immigration?
Iran?
Iraq?
Healthcare?
Taxes?
I’ve seen his website’s policy statement spin now I want actual, applicable, real life approaches to these things. Not pie in the sky, philosophical drivel. Using Sarah Palin as a butt to a joke addresses none of these issues. I would also like McCain to start wondering why Obummer is too busy attacking, not so concerned with the “issues.”

As one those Krazy Koz Kidz commented on this gaffe, it might be “the nail in the coffin” of Obama’s candidacy. I really don’t figure that, but it’s a major blunder since the subtext that’ll people stick in the average voter’s mind is “Obama called Gov. Palin a pig”.
This is red-meat for the Obamites, to be sure. But as I said, he’s just preaching to the converted with these attacks. I don’t believe it will play as well with average folks or with females in particular. The subtext is just way too nasty.

I totally agree, dj. I saw the segments that have aired on O’Reilly and Obummer just shadow boxes around the issues. O’Reilly was blunt with some questions but not some others. O’Reilly pushed in some questions and not enough in others. The tax question really was startling because Obummer’s answer indicated how nothing is really defined with him. It’s like he makes it up or backpaddles as he goes along.
I just love Alan Colmes saying that Obummer’s uhhhhhs and uhhhhmmmms represent any kind of “deep thought.” He thinks that if you wait five minutes to answer a freaking question, then the response is “well though out.”
Yeah, I’m frustrated. I’m just tired of all the shadow boxing from this guy. It may work for the socialist gimme gimme crowd, not so much to people who are skeptical of someone who amounts to the slick politicians that Obummer says he isn’t.
More than that, as a former social studies teacher, I’ve seen some 8th grade students give presentations and answer questions from me about their knowledge better than this man. I don’t think he knows as much as he’d like the American voter to think. He may be able to scam many Americans but there are many more who are skeptical of what he’s selling and why.

Remember how he scrubbed his site clean of his prenouncements the Surge would fail? Depending on his site for his positions is like trusting “Big Brother”. When they are proven to be so dreadfully wrong his “positions” just disappear down the memory hole.
I’ll bet Joey is ecstatic nobody is talking about his gaffe today, so much for civil discourse this election. But as long as we’re down here and we are speaking of lips, he needs to get at least half the money back he paid for baby moma’s lip job.

I can’t give Obama benefit of the doubt here. That joke is SO OLD that no one laughs at it anymore. Why start today? And besides, when he paused before he gave the punchline, you could hear the crowd getting louder, cheering, and Obama himself was even smirking.
