Lipstick jungle: Team McCain responds
McCain’s ad team is working 24/7. They are capitalizing on Obama’s botched lipstick joke (“Lipstick Bungle” in the immortal NYPost headline writers’ words) and pounding him hard:
I’ve always said that mockery is the better medicine when it comes to Obama. But he’s been such a thug, I’m not feeling sorry for him at all this morning.
The RNC had great fun giving away tire gauges after The One promoted tire inflation to solve the energy crisis.
I’m thinking the McCain campaign store should come up with some cute lipstick-themed gear — maybe lipstick keychains? Or t-shirts with a lip print and “Kiss Off, Obama!” I know our Photoshoppers out there will come up with fun stuff.
I’d buy.

Reader Patrick e-mails that he attended the Ohio McCain-Palin rally yesterday: “I was with my wife at the rally today I thought you should know that a lot of women in the crowd were holding up their lipstick to Sarah.” (This was before Obama’s pig remarks, Patrick notes.)
Yes, Team McCain should definitely get some official lipstick products out for sale. They will sell like hotcakes.

But, but, it was Innocent! Just like his one fingered salute of Hillary:

Great.. I’m glad they are on top of it.
Obama is truly a Jack-Ass for the ages.
What happened to the issues LGM???
Good ad. They conclusion with Couric was very powerful. I still think it was a stupid gaffe and not a deliberate attack, but it’s going to cost him big.
I think the campaign risks making too big a deal out of this. McPalin probably could have handled it better by having Palin addressing a rally by saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, I have one word for the Obama campaign. ‘Oink!’”
That said, with the Obama campaign whining that “‘community organizer’ is a code-word for ‘black’,” his followers really have no place to lecture others on being overly sensitive.
It doesn’t matter what he really meant by it because of the context of the rest of the smears. Any negative mention of Palin is going to be risky for Obama from now on. The dems sure unloaded both barrels into thier own foot on this one.
Although I do not believe Obama directly called Palin a pig, he had to have known how this “joke” was going to be perceived by his supporters. The more I see the video, the more I’m convinced of that. It’s pretty clear from their reaction that they took it as a slam on Palin. I actually believe Obama, for an instant(watch his hand slightly cover his face as he’s beginning) considered not saying this. He did not listen to his instincts and made a big mistake as a result.
If the Obamasiah wishes to apologize;
“I’M ALL EARS”
One word for Obama: inexperience.
He’s soooo not ready for primetime. Wait’ll the debates start. I’ve stocked up on my popcorn… have you?
Exactly. White woman voters are leaving Obama in droves. This kind of remark (innocent or not) isn’t going to bring them back.
I had been away from the computer for several hours and didn’t hear about this until late last night. The first thing I read was Obama’s quote….and the first thing I said to myself was, “Did he just call Palin a pig?”
So, most people’s first reactions were that he was talking about Sarah Palin.
Bad politics.
I think the ad is a bit much and McPalin shouldn’t address it at all from the stump. They should just let people discuss it on their own.
They should just give their speeches to the masses, talk about what they will do for our country….and wait patiently until the next Obama gaffe. It’s coming!
Our VP in lipstick looks better than your VP in lipstick!!!
I would definitely buy too. I’m getting my wallet out now.
Hopenchange has a weakness that takes a little time to exploit but pays big dividends: his combination of a monumental ego, towering arrogance and thin skin makes it easy to goad him.
All Team McCain needs to do is to keep needling him, and eventually he’ll burst out with some over-the-top reaction. He can’t help himself.
The screen says “Obama on Palin”, but Obama was talking about McCain policies, not McCain personally and certainly not Palin.
This video is a lie, like much of the McCain campaign (Palin did not oppose the bridge to nowhere until Congress killed it, Obama did not push sex education for kindergartners, …).
The sad thing is that this campaign style works. By the time the press figures out that this attack on Obama is a lie, the McCain people will pull out another whopper that keeps the press in a tizzy for a few days more. Anything to keep people from the issues.
Unemployment is at a new high.
If Bush follows through on his pledge to remove 8000 troops from Iraq (a big if), there still will be more troops than before the surge.
Regulators sat on their (chairs) while predatory lending created the subprime fiasco that is taking down one financial institution after another.
The Federal budget deficit was about $160Billion last year and is projected to be over $400Billion this year.
The McCain team should let this simmer and not over-cook it. The voters know when they see an uppity politician smear a lady, so there is no need to get severly off track here.
I’m sure that depends on who you talk to.
What do you get when you put lipstick on a community organizer?
The Obamites threw down the gauntlet, McCain-Palin is offering up some payback.
Barry O has fallen squarely into the trap set for him. He’s become the typical Washington politician.
Obama said what he said because he was on his own. There was no teleprompter with words that somebody else had written for him to speak. He cant speak on his own, he’s very inarticulate despite what Slo-Joe Biden says.
I personally think he was referring to Sarah as the pig in lipstick. But that’s just me – I usually expect the worst from people and I usually get it.
BO is seeing his numbers drop and will get more negative with more accusations as we get closer to election day. Let’s just hope the McCain camp can keep up with these witty retorts to his sophomoric um um um jokes.
Fixed.
Ah, but remember – one definition of “gaffe” is what someone utters when he says what he really thinks!
Nice, only there’s no possible way to interpret Obama as referring to Sarah Palin in the context of what he was saying.
This is good.
McCain said used the same expression last year about Hillary’s health care proposal.
And then he said about engaging Mitt Romney: “Never get into a wrestling match with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.”
Jane Swift says on behalf of McCain that Obama called Sarah Palin a pig. And then she says McCain never called Romney a pig.
Come on.
sorry, here’s the link.
Sure, nudge nudge wink wink…
Issues like Trig Palins “real” mother?
Even obama called for a “smart” draw down once violence was down.
Yeah we finaly got to clintons levels.
Passed by a DEMOCRATIC congress. HHHMMM good point.
The ad is okay, but not the best use of funds or a great focus for the campaign. Let the Obama-Biden campaign do themselves in. I don’t see the ad being a postive or a negative…it’s just there. I will say it is an interesting way to showcase the differences between the candidates.
However…I would totally buy lipstick related products! I would have purchased them before this episode as well.
You are correct, which is why many of us are giving him the benefit of the doubt. Regardless, he made a huge error, considering Palin’s joke last week, and has now left himself open for criticism. You cannot deny that.
But when you are communicating, there is responsibility on your part to make sure the recipients of your message understand it correctly.
I don’t think this was intentional – but I think Obama was careless for not realizing exactly how this would be interpreted by his supporters, who’ve shown nothing but hatred and contempt for Palin.
And – since the left is equating the term “community organizer” with “black” – it’s pretty silly for anyone to argue this botched joke won’t bite Obama in the rear.
Yes, but since when is Obama good at thinking on his feet?
By the way – if McCain staffers are reading this – I’d so totally buy some lipstick gear from the campaign!
So because he made an “error” that gives Palin-McCain the right to lie that he was talking about her? (And the only error is that it allows Palin-McCain to lie!)
You need to direct your comments to the crowd who was hooting and laughing and applauding and on their feet. You’d think they never heard the good old “lipstick on a pig” line. Tell them there was NO POSSIBLE WAY to think Obama was refering to Palin. So they are all just CRAZY PEOPLE.
They know what they did its a war of words all day long.He knew what he was saying may have been scripted or just his dumb *ss talking I would say the latter.
Exactly right. This is why Obama needs to come out and apologize immediately. If he does, this will go away quickly. If he doesn’t and just makes excuses, his poll numbers will continue to drop.
On September 10th, 2008 at 9:37 am, Socky said: “…‘Oink!’”
Priceless. At first listen, I took it for an often overused expression. But the reaction from the audience has me believing that if he wasn’t taking a jab, he should have immediately corrected their misinterpretation. Therefore, I believe he was attacking Palin’s lipstick joke.
Again, the McCain campaign diverts attention from its support of a failed republican agenda with a manufactured smear. If possible, they’ll go the entire campaign and never engage on anything of substance.
Excellent tactics. And revealing.
He made a mistake, his best move would be to let it go and move on. The reason this is anything at all is the 70 plus smears on palin in the last 2 weeks.
LGM posed for the Obama economy plan.
Odopey economy

lgm said:
Do you know what unemployment is in socialist Germany? About twice as much!
Yeah – kind of sounds like the Democrats who have spent the past two weeks smearing Sarah Palin as a bad mother, mocking her “retarded” child (Bill Maher refers to Trig Palin as “it”), lying about her record, and showing us all that the left HATES conservative women.
Get over yourselves, Bemused and Red State.
We’re merely giving the Obama campaign the scrutiny the media (and you) won’t. And until the left stops saying words like “community organizer” are “coded racism”, your arguments are just still.
Substance like Palin banning books that didn’t exist yet? Or perhaps substance like her husband fathering her son with her daughter? That sort of substance?
Yes I found it very revealing about the DNC.
Apparently, all of the foreign press seems to think it was intentional. And foreign opinion is sacrosanct to the left.
I can’t wait to her JoeBama call Palin sweety!
BemusedLib (the man with a 180 IQ)said:
I’ll leave it at that.
Just like the democrats calling into question who Palin’s son’s dad is and her pregnant teenage daughter. You’re right – very revealing.
Yep. Because socialism is about making everyone live in equal poverty and squalor. Not about making everyone equally wealthy.
I didn’t see that. I first thought it was a personal attack on Palin. And judging from the audience reaction, they did too. That Obama didn’t correct them (if your defense is accurate), speaks volumes about his lack of ethics.
It used to be that if it were caught on film, it could be used as evidence. Are you saying that we computer generated an Obama to say those things? Sorry, but Obama did say those things, in the assumed context.
I for one, applaud Sarah (assuming she did change her support on the bridge to nowhere) in changing her stance to the correct one based on feedback from the American people. What does that say about Obama and Biden, who continued their support for the bridge even after the backlash? Is this change?
I agree. Oh, you’re talking about attacks ON Obama, not attacks BY Obama. The problem with your statement is that the MSM is actively trying to discount McCain, while giving Obama a pass. Based on the number of rumors reported as “news” by the MSM, I’d say if this were untrue, they’d be all over it within minutes, not weeks or months as you allude.
You must be a young-pup. I know for a fact unemployment has been much higher in the past, usually under a Democratic president.
And? Sounds like you’re just miffed that we’re winning and following logic. Since Obama has flipped on this, do you support him and Bush, or some other approach?
Most of these problems were caused by too much Government interference in business. They regulate that lenders must give special consideration to high risks “because it helps the poor”, but ignore the consequences of taking on that risk.
Isn’t it the job of the (Democratic) Congress to put together the budget?
You might want to come back when you’re not firing so many blanks…
That is politics, as you liberals always like to point out. It’s up to us to decide whether he was talking about Palin or not. By the way, I think this is such a small deal for you to complain about considering the lies being perpetrated by the left with regards to Sarah Palin and her children. You’ll say that the campaign didn’t have anything to do with that, but check the threads after Palin was announced and see how some of those rumors were traced back to an official Obama site, not to mention contantly being repeated by his supporters and the media.
You mean the media put out things that aren’t true? You can see and hear what Senator Obama said. I don’t presume to know what he meant, but the audience certainly seemed to be in on the joke and it didn’t seem to be about Senator McCain’s policies.
If this keeps up I can see Hillary and Bill smiling and saying “I told you so”.
Now all we need is for Obama to pull a McGovern/Eagleton and unselect Joe Biden as his running mate.
Two of his biggest mistakes – not selecting Hilary as his VP and then selecting Joe “the mouth” Biden – Now that was putting spats on a pig…
Substance like Palin being the earmark snopw queen.
Substance like McCain being wrong on the war, many times.
Substance like more red ink in the deficit and more tax cuts targeted to high income brakcets and large corporations while the middle class loses even more ground.
Substance like lack of a health care policy.
And so on…
You need to back this up. An official Obama site? What are you talking about?
Wow, Obama must be real desperate if he’s trying to hijack threads on blogs… wow…
Weak Tactics, and revealing…
Okay, I agree with lgm (and it may not happen again). Lipstick on a pig is a saying. I don’t believe Obambi was talking about Palin or even making that reference. I hate the idea of defending Obambi or lgm but, if you put lipstick on a pig, it is still a pig. That saying has been around long before Palin in politics.
As for the rest of lgm’s post – he tried. Don’t even try the deficit crap on me if you cashed both of the checks Bush sent you.
Did you all see that newsbusters is reporting that he may have plagiarized a political cartoon from the 5th of Sep in that same speech.
Remember when the “politically correct” Left piled on Trent Lott for trying to say something nice about a 90 year old man retiring from the Senate? Was that fair, especially when the senior Democratic Senator is a former memeber of the KKK?
That leftist game has gone on for years.
Well, as I mentioned in an earlier post. Your side made the rules. We are playing the game. Next time you are tempted to lie and to pile on someone for an innocent or ill-advised comment, you might think twice.
Unfair? Probably, but fair is not in your rule book.
“SEXISM IS OKAY: If you’re a Democrat”
–Lame Stream Media Rule #123 A, Sub-chapter B
If you shoot yourself in the foot, as Senator Obama has, it’s better to bandage the wound than deny its existence.
If Obama’s team continues to harp on the “lipstick” theme, then it may be necessary to respond to it.
If Obama’s was a one-time comment, McCain’s team should ignore it. He’s got deniability (and he’s already done that) that this was an attack on Gov. Palin since this was subtle and hidden within a statement that people use all the time even though we all know that it was an attack. Instead, focus on more substantial matters — Obama’s association with Rezko, Ayers, Wright, and others, his relationship with ACORN, his positions on real issues and how he has reversed them over the last few months (His real version of change? How are we ever to know what he really believes about anything?), and outright lies related to Gov. Palin.
McCain’s team should be seen as the group focusing on things that matter; leave the trivialities to Obama’s. Let the Democrats be seen for who and what they are — the party of juveniles, completely unqualified to lead.
Besides, the Hockey Mom is tough enough to handle anything wimps like Obama and Biden can dish out. When the time comes she will have them begging for mercy.
Obama knew exactly what he was saying and it was a slap at Palin. He can’t argue the issues without his teleprompter, but he does know how to speak to the public. He got his slap in just as he wanted to do. That is one of the things community organizers do. I,m sure Hillary is counting down to 2012.
Palin was not in congress.
As was Obama. A null point.
So the Palins reproductive organs are now no longer an issue? WOW better tell your buddies.
It has been said that libs don’t do well on defense… and I have to concur.
It’s killin’ you libs and I’m lovin’ it!
Wait’ll debates.
The leading pork spenders are Democrats.
Really? We heard grom the Dimocraps the surge would not work and it did.
Cashed both of your checks from Bush didn’t you? From what I have seen, the middle class is going to get hit with higher taxes under Obambi.
Don’t ever let facts get in your way.
Sorry, but the question we were looking for is “What is a Freudian slip?”
Obama was talking about McCain and what McCain was saying, not about the policies themselves. Since his context was talking about personalities rather than policy this truly was a direct insult.
They gave Republicans an opportunity and they would be foolish not to use it to their advantage. I suppose you believe Democrats don’t take words out of context and use every gaffe made be Republicans to destroy them? They created this game and have used it mercilessly for the past 40 years to smear their opponents in ways far worse than this. If you don’t believe it you haven’t been following politics very long or in much depth. Go back to your liberal la-la land and continue with your dreams for a world filled with love and harmony where we can all just get along..
Even your buddy Obama has said that the surge has worked beyond any expectations. So I guess that means was actually RIGHT on the war… many times. Seems to me that we’ve turned over at least one more province to the Iraqi’s in the last 30 days, and we are talking about further troop reductions.
So… not much of a talking point there…
BORDERS, LANGUAGE, CULTURE, The RULE OF LAW, SOVEREIGNTY, The CONSTITUTION. Those are my concerns, what are yours?
McCain is a disaster.
Obama’s lipstick comment was classless thuggary straight from a Chicago gutter.
Proof Positive that Biden is now writing Obama’s material.
Day-umn! but it must be embarrassing to be a leftist now… I mean so embarrassing that even they would notice it.
McCain’s not the one that had to sanitize his website when giving his thoughts on the surge.
He said it and he meant it directed at Palin and it was a bad move, everything is thought out according to lgm’s posts in the past explaining all his ums and er’s why would this be different? lol what a crapweasel.
let the debates begin!!
It’s Killin em and
I Love it!!!
Image: the only gear left on the obama bus is reverse.
It seems to me that the Obamamessiah is seeing his golden parachute slipping away and he is panicking. Neither he nor Michelle have held ‘real’ jobs, ones that you were expected to produce something, and doesn’t that lifetime retirement salary of POTUS sound enticing? What is it exactly that Michelle does to warrant a salary even with most CEO’s of multi-national companies? And how convenient that she got a 200% raise when Barack got the earmark for her hospital pushed through. Me thinks something is rotten in Denmark!
I am not so inclined to believe that Obama’s lipstick comment was just a gaffe.
It was deliberate and they were waaaay to ready with a defense of it.
Did he say it a week after Hillary described herself as a pit bull with lipstick? Did McCain have a history of childish insults, like giving Hillary the finger while pretending not to?
It’s the context, stupid.
This is incredible! You realize that going back 40 years includes Richard Nixon. Do Republicans have to suffer for his tactics? 40 years also includes all of Karl Rove, who spread rumors that an Alabama judge with a children’s charity was a pedophile, that Ann Richards was a lesbian, and that John McCain’s own adopted daughter was a love child with a black woman! Does that mean Sarah Palin deserves the smears she has experienced (none actually coming from the Obama campaign)?
I don’t want Obama to be beat by just a small margin. I want him to be beat so badly he’ll never want to subject this fragile ego to that sort of smack down again and we and his party will be done with him forever more
Predatory lending? You mean like lying about your income? Agreeing to payments that are higher than your income? Walking away from a house that is worth less than you paid for it?
Exactly what part of that is predatory? Do you even think about what you say or do you just accept the Democratic Party’s talking points without any consideration?
By the way, that’s actually a serious question. I would like to know if you have reasoned this out at all and if so, how you can discount the above points.
So, Obama, who gave out three-quarters of a billion dollars in earmarks, including payoffs to the hospital that employed his wife and his political allies in Chicago, is going to go after Palin?
I understand your concerns – but do you think in any way Obama’s going to do anything to address your concerns?
McCain was considering a pro-abortion VP. We protested – he listened.
It should be alarmingly clear to anyone paying attention to the treatment of Sarah Palin that Obama’s folks don’t give a sh*t about us conservatives, and will treat us like crap under an Obama administration…
McCain’s not perfect. Palin’s a major plus to his campaign. And until we really overthrow this two-party system, we have to vote for what’s best.
That happens to be McCain.
Isn’t that what the Democrats want? More on welfare? You would think they would be happy about that. I guess it depends on ‘who’ is unemployed during ‘which’ election cycle.
Although decidedly non-scientific, here’s what “clinging,” rural Democrat voters think of Obama/Biden – love it!
Do you also believe that Jerry Mathers died in Vietnam, or are you selective about which urban legends you buy into?
Do us all a favor and chow down on Mountain Dew and Pop Rocks. Because, you know, that’s what killed ‘Mikey’ from the Life cereal commercials.
Nixon’s dead, dude. Time to move up to the 21st century.
If you believe the Obama campaign doesn’t silently condone those smears, you need help.
Instead of the final word “Yes”, It should read “Pig”.
Zero seems to be accumulating a significant amount of baggage in terms of him relating to the opposite sex.
And there certainly have been a number of other indications.
My Gaydar is beginning to sound off.
Yeah, I know wife and kids.
But then again, so has Larry Craig.
Someone at the office told me it was just a matter ot time before they dug ol’ Trick Dicky again.
I went to see ‘Spamalot’ at the Sam S Shubert theatre in Manhattan last night, and at one point ‘King Arthur’ made an analogy to ‘Palin’s fake glasses’. That was a new one to me.
You know he then goes into an example of fish stinking after being wrapped in paper for several days…the Palin family has had a commercial fishing business all their lives. I don’t think that reference is as obnoxious as the inference that Sarah Palin is a pig. But just maybe it shows that they are in his head and his references are in fact being influenced by what he knows about them and therefore I do think he was hoping that everyone would pick up the smear.
You know our political discourse is in a sad state when we’re contemplating the meaning of a “botched lipstick joke”.
McCain was considering a pro-abortion VP. We
protestedsaid we wouldn’t vote for him – hecaved.
John McCain’s true colors show only when he isn’t running for elected office. 1998: says Roe should not be reversed. 2006: says Alito was too conservative for the Supreme Court.
Yes, he’s to the right of Obama, but y’all can’t seriously believe he isn’t the same John McCain just because he picked Sarah Palin.
And Obama’s plan to raise taxes on companies that provide jobs for people fixes this how?
And Obama’s plan to enact Draconian greenhouse gas regulations on industry helps this, how?
And Obama’s ‘conservation only’ energy policy helps this how. In case you haven’t notice, the increase in unemployment has tracked closely to the decline in domestic energy consumption.
I think the McPalin plan to expand domestic energy production will create thousands and thousands of new private sector jobs, both directly and indirectly.
Much better than borrowing money from China to employ more ‘community orgaznizers.’
ANYTHING to keep that Dope with Hope from being elected is okay by me.
The Obama campaign is joined at the hip with the left-wing media and blogs. Their smears are his smears.
He is happy to take their support, so he has to take responsibility for their actions.
OK – let’s talk substance. Socialism has never worked. BHO wants socialism
Abortion kills babies. BHO wants abortion.
The constitution is a fantastic foundation upon which this country was built. Shall we throw it out or change it now?
You mean those kind of issues?
Some commentators this morning are saying that we should give Obambi the benefit of the doubt. I don’t. He knew exactly what he was saying. It was premeditated and calculated. He is mad at the way he has been thrown off his game by and this is part of his tantrum. He has sent an army of paratrooper lawyers to Alaska to dig dirt on Sara Palin because he believes she has done something she needs to hide. Give him the benefit of the doubt at your own peril.
