Charlie Gibson had a chance to show that he could be fair, balanced, and P.D.S.-free with Sarah Palin’s first major MSM interview.
Looks like he blew it.
Taking quotes out of context.
Engaging in distortionary hype.
And the reason we should watch the rest of this hatchet job is…what exactly?

This is how Yahoo! News is promoting the interview:
GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?
PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.
GIBSON: Exact words.
PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.
But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.
That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.
GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”
What she actually said:
“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

Totally untrue, but that’s what he gets for relying on the Associated Press, which took the liberty of bowdlerizing her quote mid-sentence in order to make it fit the narrative they were trying to build of her as some fundie who thinks she can read God’s mind. What’s missing from the AP’s version? Right — the beginning of what she said, the part that makes clear she’s not asserting that we’re doing God’s will but simply praying that we are. It’s the difference between me saying “McCain will win” and “I pray McCain will win.” The first is an assertion of fact/secret knowledge, the second is an expression of desire/hope. The AP actually stoops to picking up the quote mid-sentence to make it better fit the stereotype of the holy-roller yokel claiming divine inspiration for Bush’s Crusade.

From what I’ve heard said she did fine.
The first clips of the Palin & Gibson interview are appearing as teasers. What I’ve seen has not been encouraging. Palin’s answers are OK, but they are shot from the side and not close-up, making her look fidgety and nervous. She faces Gibson rather than the camera, which gives a distracted, disjointed feeling.

Her voice sounded nervous. Waiting to see the whole thing though. Just listened to clips over the radio.
He read the questions as if it were a sentencing instead of an interview. MSM bias? Nahhhh.

I certainly am not surprised at the tone of this. I watched Charlie last night — something that I rarely do — and his report was very unfair to Palin. Some of the questions that are arising are matters of interpretation. Charlie reports his own, bigoted, Georgtown-cocktail-circuit opinions as fact.

She comes off about as unimpressively as I suspected she would. The irony of this thread is particularly striking. I’ve been a McCain guy for quite some time (and some of it’s personal, as my pops went to Annapolis with him), but his actions in this campaign (most notably, the Palin pick) have been very disappointing.

I had a bad feeling this was going to be a hit piece. This should just about bury the alphabet news networks. From my observations Governor Palin is an extremely smart well educated and informed woman while Charlie Gibson showed himself to be an arrogant ass. Hannity is right 2008 is the year journalism died in the United States of America.
Observations:
1. Editing was annoyingly choppy, as others have said.
2. Lighting was poor. Sarah is lovely, so they lit her to minimize it.
3. Gibson repeated questions multiple times. I expected Sarah to say “Asked and answered, Charlie!”
4. The “not eligible to be a heartbeat away” argument is set to rest, I think. First, John McCain is *not* going to die the day after inauguration. He’s not going to die in his first term. Second, Sarah’s strong, positive character came through in the interview. I certainly trust her gut more than I do either Obama’s or Biden’s!
I want to see the whole unedited interview. Her answers were chopped off short on most of the questions. Charlie wasn’t about to let her flesh out her responses. He was simply in search of a gaffe to run with for the next month. When it didn’t happen, he looked clearly annoyed and/or disappointed. He was short on the respect department, if you ask me.

OMG…I just watched the two short teaser clips and in all honesty, I don’t know if I can watch the entire interview. I am furious!
Any good feelings I might have reserved for Charlie Gibson, flew out the window, post haste! Give the enemy (the left in this case)a break, and they’ll try to destroy you, not with truth, but with lies and distortions…and do it with a smugness you can only imagine.
In the first clip, he reacts with incredulity to her affirmation that she feels she is ready for the call. His facial expressions, and body language tells it all.
In those two short clips, he couldn’t bear NOT smirking at her during her responses. What a piece of work is he!!!

I was initially glad when I heard Gibson was interviewing her, because I think he’s typically the best of the three network anchors. Also, he and George Stephanoupolos get props for actually asking debate questions.
However, this didn’t seem like an interview. His tone was that of a police interrogation. He didn’t sound like he even wanted to be there. He came off as arrogant and condescending. I know I already said it, but when you freaking sigh when someone you’re interviewing gets a sentence into their answer, that’s not showing them an ounce of respect. I still can’t get over that.

His “GOTCHYA!” questions are typical of F- journalism.
I’ve heard the later installments of the interview will be comprised of the parts they chopped out of the first two.
No wonder the last time I watched ABC was when Roots was on.
You will see that the so-called “softball” interview she does on Fox News will much more revealing and informative about her positions, and her world view.

Again, Palin is running for VP. Obama is running for President. Palin has been in elected office longer than Obama and in executive positions. She definitely has value.
Obama has been in National office for less than 2 years and the entire time, he has spent it running for President. What experience does he have again?
Sounds like only McCain & Biden have experience to be President. Republicans have the order right. Experience at the top of the ticket and training for 2nd slot. Democrats have training for the top slot and experience in the 2nd slot and even he states he is not the best person for the job. The world is upside down.

From what I saw tonight, Gibson is a disgrace.
Palin “didn’t seem herself” for good reason. I didn’t expect this to be a puff piece, but I also didn’t expect that Gibson would go below the belt to the extent he did.
That said, she handled herself well. Seemed a bit nervous, yes, but the hostility and lies emanating from Gibson were a bit much.
I would LOVE to see Gibson give 90% of these exact questions to Obama with the same condescension, hostility and disrespect.
We have yet to see the top of the Dem ticket answer real questions (asked in either a hostile or pleasant way).
I wonder how McCain will react?

AmericaFirst, what you think I am is irrelevant. I’m entitled to my opinion and you’re entitled to yours…that’s the way it works in this country. I think Gov. Palin is woefully unqualified to be VPOTUS. I’ll vote for Sen. McCain in November and assuming he wins, hope to hell that he stays healthy for 8 years. BTW, I am judging Palin on her merits. Years ago my brother had the unfortunate experience of being interviewed by Charlie.
My brother is an expert on the topic at hand but good old Charlie didn’t like his responses. When my brother’s answers weren’t what Charlie wanted he would cut him off and badger him with follow-ups designed to elicit the desired confirmation of Charlie’s preconceived notions.
He didn’t succeed in shaking my brother’s resolve but he sure proved himself to be a pompous ass.
BTW, this wasn’t even a political interview. My brother was being interviewed on the effects of growing up with an alcoholic parent. How could this arrogant SOB think he knew the answers better than my brother!
The worst part about this jerk is that my mother’s maiden name is Gibson which means there’s a possibility we’re related. Perish the thought!

There is no correlation whatsoever to taking her statements out of context, by leaving out some of her original statement, so as to completely distort its meaning; and drawing an analogy to Obama’s words regarding ‘lipstick on a pig’, when he never made any explanatory remarks to dissuade the audience from thinking of Palin’s ‘lipstick’ joke. We all knew exactly what he meant. Just as we all know exactly what Palin said regarding the “task that is from God!”

I have never been a Charlie Gibson fan. He has always come across as smug and obnoxious and tonights interview just intensified my feelings. You will never see a democrat being grilled like he grilled Governor Palin. This was nothing but an attempt to get her to say something they can use against her.

Obama would never give such an interview, and ABC wouldn’t air it, because it would be around 50 percent “uhhh”, “ummmm” and the like, and the other 50 percent incoherent ramblings. Likewise, I wouldn’t expect much from the “debates”. Legally or otherwise, Obamessiah will have the questions well in advance and will have his answers written out for him by his staff.
My sister told me tonight she turned off Charlie Gibson 20 years ago during another condescending interview with someone, and never watched him again until tonight.
