Lamest Obama ad ever: McCain doesn’t do e-mail!

Obama says he wants to talk about Important Issues.

So, here’s his latest ad attacking McCain.

The serious, deep, important issue?

Obama uses a computer. And John McCain doesn’t.

This is why The World Wants Obama!

***

Obama shouldn’t pat himself on the back so hard for his computer savvy. This is the guy who couldn’t get his massively hyped Magic Text Message on the Biden announcement right.

Remember?

Reader Norman B. also raises a good point: “What if the reason that McCain doesn’t use the computer is because of his arms? Maybe it is too painful to type because of the torture he experienced in Vietnam.”

***
Allah asks: “If Internet savvy is a basic qualification for leadership in the modern age, how can it be that Billy Jeff — still a major figure in the Democratic Party and the head of an influential global charity — sent exactly two e-mails as president and remains offline to this day?”

A commenter at the liberal TNR blog is shaking his/her head: “I just don’t get the thinking behind it at all. Don’t they realize that there are 83 million Americans in the non-line community? And most of those are probably in downscale households they NEED to turn out? They’re insulting these people! Gratuitously!”

The Obama campaign does have a way of doing that…

***

Ace of Spades:

As strange as it may be to imagine, there are Americans who don’t use email, many who use it rarely, and many who don’t like it. Implying that they are stuck in the ’80s does not seem like a smart move. A lot of these folks are sensitive to being called “out of date” or “out of touch.”

What starts as an attack on John McCain–”he can’t use a computer”–sounds a lot like an attack on everyone who doesn’t. As Allah says, that’s a lot of seniors. But not just seniors. It’s a personal attack on anyone who doesn’t switch on their computers right after they switch on their coffeemakers.

Sure, it squeezes in an attempt at a substantive issue–”he doesn’t understand the economy”–but the gist of the whole ad is that McCain is old and old things aren’t cool. That’s what the shot of the brick cellphone and the rubix cube are all about. But something that Obama obviously didn’t consider is that old people hold grudges, especially when some half-grown dandy spits in their faces.

***

Jonah Goldberg digs up some articles confirming what many readers suspected: McCain doesn’t type because of his war injuries.

He is, however, web savvy and can surf with a mouse.

Ok, now that this Important Issue has been resolved…

    Perfect description of liberals. Everything that can be pointed out that is definitely wrong with America can be linked to liberal policies, which Obama only wants to support through our tax money. They would only erode our freedoms and liberties, and create more and more dependant drones who think that their “rights” are whatever the Federal government says that they are.

    Liberals subsidize ignorance and call it “education,” they subsidize unemployment and call it “welfare,” and they subsidize racism and calls it “affirmative action.” They also render citizenship and patriotism meaningless by subsidizing illegal residency and voter fraud.

    All that Obama did as a “commnuity orginizer” supported everything that destroys the integrity of the communities that he was supposedly serving. He is against the everything that America has stood for from its founding ’til now, and I think as an agent of our destruction defines Obama and his minions as a “disease” perfectly.

    My gosh, can Obama figure out which job he is angling for?

    First he attacks the Republican VEEP candidate – does he want her job?

    Or does he want to be a community organizer for the whole USA?

    Or lately from his ad against McCain about McCain not being able to operate a computer I get the impression Obama wants Nick Burns’ job as “My company’s computer guy” from the Saturday Night Live skit.

    I’m guessing a guy that could fly an F-4 Phantom fighter jet can operate a computer and send an email if he needs to.

    I am guessing that “e-mail sending” is not an important job skill for the Commander-in-Chief of the mightiest nation on earth.

    If I want a President I will look to John McCain. If my local area network breaks down I will have to toss a coin between calling Barry Obama or Nick “Jimmy Fallon” Burns. Both have comparable people skills.

    As the office guy says, “I don’t like that guy”.

    His choice of Sarah Palin for VP was nothing less than brilliant. In one fell swoop he knocked Obamas’ halo right off his head, changed the entire landscape of this election and moved a huge Donk demographic squarely to the center.

    I have been asked by the Obama campaign to take Senator Biden’s place as their Vice Presidential nominee, and I have rejected their proposal. I refuse to be part of this discombobulated, immature presidential campaign, only to besmirch myself in its shadow. I refuse to be a patsy for a presidential campaign that is displaying its misogyny in its attacks against Governor Pailin, and its disregard for our elderly citizens. I refuse to be a second-fiddle for this Barack Obama’s horrible campaign, and I will see you–John McCain, in 2012.

    Obama stepped into real deep this time, even by the standards of his campaign. Here are two recent quotes [Goldberg's slightly edited] from the Corner, since I know not everyone is a Corner junky:

    Re: Wondering no more [Mark Steyn]

    Jonah, why didn’t the Obama guys and the AP figure that out? It’s extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief knows how to send an e-mail …but not how to do a five-minute Google search.

    [Jonah Goldberg]

    Some say, So what if he was handicapped? He could still learn how to send email. Sure, but why would he? Bill Clinton sent two emails during his entire presidency and often admitted he didn’t know squat about the internet.

    . . . And the fact that he’s not blaming his disability hardly sounds like a serious indictment. If he did blame his disability, many of the same folks yelling at me would be complaining that McCain’s whining.

    Now, I’d hardly be surprised if McCain could type for short stretches and all that. The point is, that it’s perfectly understandable why he wouldn’t get in the habit of it.

    Oh one last point for now: Lord knows I think the chicken-hawk arguments are stupid. And I don’t think the fact that Obama never served in the military should count against him in and of itself. But how stupid is it for the Obama campaign to claim that McCain is unqualified to be president because he can’t grasp cyber-security issues based on the fact he has never sent an email when the McCain campaign can just as easily say Obama can’t understand first order national security issues because he’s never fired a rife, flown a plane, commanded men in battle, or faced an enemy? I mean which prepares someone to be commander in chief better, hitting “send” on AOL or fighting a war?

    Update II: On the other hand: I don’t know what to make of this interview with the New York Times. McCain sounds awfully web savvy in it, which makes the Obama ad sound unfair. And if you read it closely, it sounds like he knows how to surf with a mouse, but doesn’t do much by way of typing.

    Today, Obama puts out THIS ad deriding McCain’s inability to use e-mail.

    Obama’s Left Wing Flying Monkeys pounce on the theme and continue the mockery. Real Clear Politics reports in an an article with the headline: Obama mocks McCain as computer illiterate

    Just one little problem. There is a reason McCain cannot use a keyboard:
    “McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes.”

    Barak Obama is mocking the inability of a man to perform a function he is incapable of performing due to the servere injuries he received as a result of being brutally tortured as a POW during the Vietnam War. Shameless. Vile. And despicable.

    Look for Obama to issue a statement disclaiming responsibility. Yet, with over 2500 paid employees, over 300 top level advisors, thousands of volunteers and the largest cash accumulation of any candidate in US history, there is NO WAY they were unaware of McCain’s disability. No way.

    Obama smeared Hillary Clinton. He picked up where he left off with Hillary and turned up the stentch in his attacks against Palin. And now, he has truly achieved a new low.

    This attack on McCain is absolutely disgusting. I hope news of this incident is spread far and wide. It is a revelation into gutlessness and loathesome character of Barak Obama. And a mere glimpse of what this Country is in for if he is elected as President.

    McCain is a good campaigner, naturally. How many did he win as US Senator?

    Michael Barone notes McCain’s military experience which gives him a battle edge over Obama:

    John McCain was trained as a fighter pilot. In his selection of Sarah Palin, and in his convention and campaigning since, he has shown that he learned an important lesson from his fighter pilot days: He has gotten inside Barack Obama’s OODA loop.

    That term was the invention of the great fighter pilot and military strategist John Boyd. It’s an acronym for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.

    “The key to victory is operating at a faster tempo than the enemy,” Boyd’s biographer Robert Coram writes. “The key thing to understand about Boyd’s version is not the mechanical cycle itself, but rather the need to execute the cycle in such a fashion as to get inside the mind and decision cycle of the adversary.”

    For a fighter pilot, that means honing in above and behind the adversary so you can shoot him out of the sky. For a political candidate, it means acting in such a way that the opponent’s responses again and again reinforce the points you are trying to make and undermine his own position…

    Not sure where you will find it, but possibly a better analogy would be an expression we used in the Army called, “getting inside the enemies decision cycle.”

    Instead of flying, you create C3 (command, control and communications)capabilities, procedures and processes for each of the four OODA components so you can initiate and complete them faster than your own OODA enemies cycle.

    The idea is you ACT, the enemy OBSERVES and your cycles both start. You complete your cycle and ACT again before he can. When that happens he is forced to reset and OBSERVE and never finishes. After several iterations the enemy is thoroughly disrupted and vulnerable.

    Boring to read, but fascinating when you see it function.

    You’re probably right. But for those interested, the letter in the aircraft designation reveals its primary purpose:

    A = Attack (A-4)
    B = Bomber (B-1, B 52)
    C = Cargo (C-130)
    F = Fighter Aircraft (F-4, F-14)
    P = Pursuit (P-51, P-38)
    X = Experimental (X-15)

    There’s a few others, but not many more. Those of us that have served in the military understand that pilots get confused if you use the entire alphabet. And they are not permitted to chew gum while flying. Or walking. :)

    The only debate I’m more looking forward to is the Palin vs. O’Biden debate. I’ll go all out and have TWO beers instead of one for that one. Sic ‘em Sarah. Wear the blood red lipstick for this one.

    We don’t build single-purpose tactical aircraft like the Soviets. The A-4 can do many different missions. It can serve as a light bomber, dive-bombing targets. It can serve as a fighter protecting its carrier with 20 mm cannon and AIM-9 IR missiles, which are considered pretty offensive weapons. Of course, I’m stumped as to what weapon on any modern tactical aircraft is considered defensive.

    If an aircraft flies air-to-air missions, it’s a fighter. Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM or dogfighting) was taught in the A-4 at the Navy Fighter Weapons School (ie Top Gun). That’s pretty convincing evidence the Navy thought it was a fighter, too.

    Just for your information, virtually all fighters serve as light bombers. Even the F-15s occassionally train to drop bombs.

    So, yes indeed, McCain was a fighter pilot.

    I flew OV-10s (observation) as a 2nd Lt in Vietnam (while Sen McCain was a ‘guest’ of the North Vietnamese government). After 165 missions, I returned as an instructor pilot in T-38’s (trainers). Eventually I flew A-10’s and lastly flew F-16’s where I commanded a training squadron like Sen McCain.

    I always considered myself a fighter pilot not because of what I flew, rather the attitude I and my fellow pilots (no matter the prefix on their aircraft type) exhibited. I am NOT talking about the macho, swaggering Tom Cruise of Holloywood’s Top Gun!

    Rather, it is the attitude to take on a challenge (be it in peace or war) to get the mission done in spite of daunting odds.

    Pilots with a figther pilot attitude flew their B-24’s to Ploesti and five of them were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions that August day in 1943. James Howard singlehandedly defended a formation of B-17s using his P-51 (pursuit) to fend off 30+ German fighters — he too was awarded the MOH.

    There were fighter pilots in Vietnam who flew into the heavily defended airspace of North Vietnam in aircraft as varied as the A-4, A-1, B-52, F-105, F-4, A-6, A-7, and even in helicopters to rescue airmen who were shot down. I actually flew a single mission over the North in my trusty little OV-10 looking for a pilot who was shot down (but NOT into the Hanoi area!).

    You see, it is the attitude, not the equipment flown. My wife still calls me a ‘fighter pilot’ although I haven’t flown a fighter since 1989. She just knows I will always ‘fight the good fight’ as will Sen McCain.

    Thanks,it was the best assignment of my 22 year career.

    BTW, we used to joke about our Broncos (the OV-10) as the only airplane that took off at 120 knots, flew at 120 knots and landed at 120 knots. We found that by flying that slow we could see more and stay over the target longer. Unfortunately, it also made us a better target, but we also used to change bank, pitch or yaw (or a combination of all three) every five seconds to be less predictable — it was like riding a roller coaster for 4-5 hours at a stretch, except someone was shooting at you!
