Obama shouldn’t pat himself on the back so hard for his computer savvy. This is the guy who couldn’t get his massively hyped Magic Text Message on the Biden announcement right.
Reader Norman B. also raises a good point: “What if the reason that McCain doesn’t use the computer is because of his arms? Maybe it is too painful to type because of the torture he experienced in Vietnam.”

A commenter at the liberal TNR blog is shaking his/her head: “I just don’t get the thinking behind it at all. Don’t they realize that there are 83 million Americans in the non-line community? And most of those are probably in downscale households they NEED to turn out? They’re insulting these people! Gratuitously!”

As strange as it may be to imagine, there are Americans who don’t use email, many who use it rarely, and many who don’t like it. Implying that they are stuck in the ’80s does not seem like a smart move. A lot of these folks are sensitive to being called “out of date” or “out of touch.”
What starts as an attack on John McCain–”he can’t use a computer”–sounds a lot like an attack on everyone who doesn’t. As Allah says, that’s a lot of seniors. But not just seniors. It’s a personal attack on anyone who doesn’t switch on their computers right after they switch on their coffeemakers.
Sure, it squeezes in an attempt at a substantive issue–”he doesn’t understand the economy”–but the gist of the whole ad is that McCain is old and old things aren’t cool. That’s what the shot of the brick cellphone and the rubix cube are all about. But something that Obama obviously didn’t consider is that old people hold grudges, especially when some half-grown dandy spits in their faces.

I sometimes wonder if Obama really wants to win this thing. It is never a good idea to attack your opponent in areas where you are weak, or where they can respond effectively.
Witness his attack about McCain’s houses (reminded people of how he got his), comments about Palin’s inexperience (reminded people about his severe lack of same), comments about how Palin was an “affirmative action” choice (reminds people that he may not have earned all the honors at Harvard – but was given them due to his skin color). The list goes on.
What this does demonstrate very clearly is his lack of leadership ability. He has been on the defensive since the convention. He picked a VP that he probably didn’t like, just to appease critics who said he had no foreign policy experience. He had to explain that his lipstick/pig joke wasn’t about Palin. A real leader would be on offense – clearly spelling out his agenda, drawing a clear distinction between himself and McCain – rather than having it on a web page (that is changed often, probably to keep up with the latest polling data).
If this is his idea of leadership, his idea of going on the offense, then it is either a deliberate strategy to lose or incompetence of the highest order.

I think it would be good if McCain learned how to access the internet and send email. Heck, I’m no chiphead and even I can do that. But on the other hand, when it comes to having the knowledge, experience and steely-eyed strength during tough times to be president, knowing how to send an email just really doesn’t qualify me, does it? Somehow McCain has it in bucketloads over me in the presidential qualities department.
On the whole, this Obama ad just seems vapid.

My Dad is 88, sharp as a tack, very active politically – and doesn’t use email. Does this make him ‘out of touch’ with America? I don’t think so!! Just because I’m computer-literate doesn’t mean everybody is. And some folks simply don’t have the wherewithal to buy one! Go ahead – impune these folks – see how many votes it gets McCain! I can recall the days that I didn’t ‘get it’ on computers, and sometimes I rue the day I found out about them!! They’re addictive, and our President doesn’t need distractions with the world as it is today! The One needs to find substantive issues – like why he’s friends with a known terrorist like Ayers – to discuss, instead of belittling someone who isn’t computer-literate!! Go back to community organizing, BHO!!

Actually – donkeys fool themselves into lots of things. They keep thinking that this iteration of socialism will be different. Never-mind that is has never worked before.
I don’t necessarily disagree. But given the fact a MAJOR plank in their hatred of Sarah Palin has been the fact she had Trig (knowing of his disability), and many (like Bill Maher, who refers to Trig as “it”) think he’s nothing more than a “retard” and a “prop”, I’m a little sensitive toward jokes involving one’s mental capacity.
By the way, did you see a Canadian doctor’s frantic worry that Palin’s choice to have Trig might encourage other women not to abort their Downs (or otherwise disabled) children?
Never mind that upwards of 80% of children diagnosed with Downs are already aborted – it apparently isn’t enough. And, the fact that many prenatal Downs diagnoses tend to turn out, well, wrong…”perfect” children were aborted.

I don’t think he would drop Biden. If anything, Biden would resign. Or, Biden could conveniently come up with some medical reason and say he can’t take a chance to continue or something.
They would plan this about a week or two before the election, so they could hog up the entire news cycle.

That pretty much nails it. Barack Obama and his campaign is childish and terribly un-presidential. It is aimed at people who wouldn’t vote for a Republican if their lives depended on it, and at the same time they are appearing boorish and insipid to everyone else.
In the meantime, people STILL do not know what qualifies Obama to do ANYTHING as a leader and chief executive of the nation. They still know scant information about who Obama is, and they sense that Obama doesn’t WANT for them to know anything about who he is. Every day, it is becoming obvious to hundreds of thousands of voters that BO has a lot to hide.
I do not see Obama reclaiming any of the voters he’s lost in the past couple of months, and barring massive voter fraud, John McCain and Sarah Palin are going to win in a huge landslide.

Three quick things I would like to know as I sit here in San Antonio watching new coverage of IKE and the constant replays of the Obama ad is:
1. What does pictures of McCain from the 80′s have to do with how he dresses and acts today in 2000. Especially the picture of him and President Reagan. In my mind these pictures help reinforce the fact that McCain has more experience than Obama.
2. So what of McCain doesn’t like using a computer? I’m an IT professional and while I will admit I love computers, networks, and technology but at the end of the day I would much rather meet with people in person or talk to them over the phone than exchange e-mails. In my opinion one can lose the closeness and real compassion/understanding that can only come from real in person human interaction.
AND last but not least (and in my opinion most importantly)
3. Why is Obama and crew picking on the Rubik’s Cube? Is it that they don’t have enough brain power to figure one out so they gotta hate on it? I’m a geek and love logic and other brainy puzzles so in my eyes nothings wrong with playing with a Rubik’s Cube in fact it is quite good for at exercising not only the brain but flexibility in the hands and wrists. So, to me by Obama and crew say McCain plays with Rubik’s Cubes, means that McCain is an intelligent person who understand that its important to stay mentally has fun doing it. Also the Rubik’s Cube also offers a physical and often over looked benefit: it helps exercise and maintain flexibility in the fingers and writs. Maintaining joint flexibility is very important, but is probably difficult for McCain with his POW injuries. So using a Rubik’s Cube would provide a good two-in-one activity for McCain.

The young kid at the office mentioned that McCain was computer illiterate. The response he received from everyone he told was “So what?”.

Managing a wireless store for a major carrier, one of the questions we ask all the customers is if they use email. We do this to sell different features, and maybe home Internet. There are still quite a few people who do not use email and/or barely use it.
But, hey, Barry, keep pushing the really big issues, buuuuuuudy!
The current buzz-phrase that’s been getting under my skin the last couple of weeks is “God forbid.” Refer to the clip from The View for reference. Somewhat valid, but also somewhat offensive by its overkill.

As shown in this ad and by sticking to the issues (/sarc), again, Obama has proven he has no agenda, he doesn’t truly know what the issues are and he hasn’t decided how to frame himself to the public. He has spent all of his time framing what John McCain isn’t, that works in the primaries when you are running against your own kind. Now that we are in the real race, he needs to frame who he is and what he stands for, but he is too busy trying to determine what issues will be ‘popular’ come November 4. Will it be reform? Or will it be economy? What? HopeChangeHopeChange??
Obama keeps trying to frame Mccain and it keeps sliding off as if Mccain is made of teflon (Palin teflon). McCain has successfully proven he is the Maverick who has set out to reform. He is just about completed the task of framing Obama for the voters. If Obama was truly ‘staying’ on issues he would have been above the fray and this would have a slid off like he was made of teflon. But, when you have Biden who has been in DC since ’72, how can you mention that your opponent has been there since ’82???? It probably won’t be, but should be the focus of a rebuttal ad against Obama’s low blow. Yes, the same Obama who was outraged that the McCain took his words out of context and called for the media to back down over his ‘lipstick on a pig remark’. I would like to see the Senator be treated to one solid week of intense scrutiny on his background like Palin has been for the last couple of weeks. I mean a total and all-out barrage of questions over all aspects of his early life, and his and Michelle’s families’ dirty laundry, political ads, talk show jokes and national press over Ayers, Rezko and other areas of his life that he wishes to go unnoticed. Anyone think that the polls would go up for him like they are for McCain and Palin? Obama would implode.

My gosh, can Obama figure out which job he is angling for?
First he attacks the Republican VEEP candidate – does he want her job?
Or does he want to be a community organizer for the whole USA?
Or lately from his ad against McCain about McCain not being able to operate a computer I get the impression Obama wants Nick Burns’ job as “My company’s computer guy” from the Saturday Night Live skit.
I’m guessing a guy that could fly an F-4 Phantom fighter jet can operate a computer and send an email if he needs to.
I am guessing that “e-mail sending” is not an important job skill for the Commander-in-Chief of the mightiest nation on earth.
If I want a President I will look to John McCain. If my local area network breaks down I will have to toss a coin between calling Barry Obama or Nick “Jimmy Fallon” Burns. Both have comparable people skills.
As the office guy says, “I don’t like that guy”.
