Washington Post blows it

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 12, 2008 07:31 AM

In a page 1 news story, Washington Post reporter Anne Kornblut accuses Sarah Palin of asserting “that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.”

Just one problem: Palin said no such thing. She simply said that Iraq-bound U.S. troops would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”

As McCain Campaign blogger Michael Goldfarb notes, “It seems we are to assume that this group [al Qaeda in Iraq], despite sharing a name and leadership with the group responsible for the 9/11 attacks, has nothing at all to do with those who ‘planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.’”

No connection at all?

Video of Palin’s speech here.

***

Since they think tying 9/11 and Iraq together is headline news now, perhaps the Washington Post can next publish a front-page story slamming our troops for making a connection between 9/11 and fighting in Iraq. Let me reprint one of the excerpts I posted in my main 9/11 anniversary post yesterday:

Sgt. Desion Fulks watched the World Trade Center towers come down on television from Fort Rucker, Ala. He re-enlisted three weeks later.

Capt. Joseph Mason, a reservist at the time, immediately volunteered for combat duty after watching what happened in New York and Washington, D.C. He deployed to Iraq two years later with the first wave a troops.

“I was sitting at home, looking at the television, seeing the carnage of the Pentagon and the Trade towers, and I felt I had to do something,” he said.

Both men, and about 5,000 other soldiers with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas begin training at Fort Irwin on Thursday, the seven-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and one other commercial jet. Many of the soldiers, who will deploy to Iraq at the end of December, said the images of Sept. 11, 2001 still flash through their minds.

“I will never forget what happened on 9/11,” said Sgt. 1st Class Mark Linares. “It’s been so long since 9/11, but it is still in my mind like it was yesterday.”

Linares, who was with the 82nd Airborne Division when the attacks occurred and knew he would be one of the first soldiers on the ground where ever they had to go. Some soldiers in the 82nd Airborne were in Afghanistan the next month. Capt. Jennifer Bowersox was part of a unit that went to Kuwait when the ground war in Iraq began in 2003. She said then soldiers talked about Sept. 11 as their reason, and they still talk about it today.

“It must be on every soldier’s mind. It’s certainly on mine,” she said. “You’re wearing the American flag on your sleeve. You’re thinking this happened in my nation, and we can never allow it to happen in the United States again.”

Actually, Saddam Hussein had a working relationship with al queda that goes back to the mid-1990s, well before 9/11. A number of sources, one of which was the then President of Czechoslovakia reported a clandestine meeting between al queda and Hussein Intelligence just prior to the 9/11 attacks. There is a memo in which Saddam Hussein put out a request for pilots to volunteer to commit suicide attacks on US interests around the world. This memo was 6 months before 9/11.

Of course, the media conveniently ignored most of this, but it really isn’t particularly hard to find. Check out http://iraqdocs.blogspot.com/ for translations of capture Iraqi documents – quite revealing.

Getting back to how they distorted Palin’s words let me explain it to you, since (unlike unseen) I have no faith that you aren’t that stupid.

We have troops at war in Iraq, not troops at war with Iraq. Saddam’s government ceased to exist 5 years ago and the man himself has been feeding worms for while now. Our troops in Iraq are fighting Al Qaeda, the organization that “planned, executed and rejoiced in” the 9/11 attacks. So what Palin said is indisputably accurate.

If people like you and the Washington Post want to willfully misunderstand or distort her words it reflects poorly on you, not Governor Palin.

But the Left in general (and you in particular) are so completely unhinged by this woman that you’re willing to make up stuff she didn’t say and then comdemn her for saying it.

What’s wrong with you? Honestly, I’d like to know, because some kind of actual mental illness is the only explanation I can think of.

Palin is evidently saying that American soldiers are going to Iraq to defend innocent Iraqis from al Qaeda in Iraq, a group that is related to al Qaeda, which did plan and carry out the Sept. 11 attacks.

Experts say that the name is the only connection between “al Qaeda in Iraq” and the Bin Laden organization in Pakistand and Afghanistan. They also say that “al Qaeda in Iraq” is responsible for only a small part of the violence in Iraq. If Palin actually knew much about Iraq (”eyerack”), she could have said that US troops were fighting the Mahdi army or the Badr Corps (oops! that last militia is run by the Prime Minister, not the enemy!).

I bet you wet yourself with the “eyerack” comment. Were you wearing lipstick too? (just trying to keep up with your denigration of local accents and pronunciations).

Real issue: Palin is not ready for prime time. She didn’t know the “Bush doctrine”, which has been for the past six years the organizing principle of US foreign policy. She’s spoiling to drag the US into a war with Russia over Georgia.

Now put the ENTIRE quote of her’s related to that, and try to make that statement. Hint: it’s about NATO.

    From your pals at Wikipedia:

The phrase initially described the policy that the United States had the right to treat countries that harbor or give aid to terrorist groups as terrorists themselves, which was used to justify the invasion of Afghanistan.[1] Later it came to include additional elements, including the controversial policy of preventive war, which held that the United States should depose foreign regimes that represented a supposed threat to the security of the United States, even if that threat was not immediate (used to justify the invasion of Iraq), a policy of supporting democracy around the world, especially in the Middle East, as a strategy for combating the spread of terrorism, and a willingness to pursue U.S. military interests in a unilateral way.

I don’t see how anything she said differed from that.

Real issue: Palin is not She’s spoiling to drag the US into a war with Russia over Georgia.

She was speaking of Nato and Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.

Article 5 of the Washington Treaty:
The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

    What does Article 5 mean?
Article 5 is at the basis of a fundamental principle of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It provides that if a NATO Ally is the victim of an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence as an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the Ally attacked.

This is the principle of collective defence.

    READ AND GROW UP
    Six Rules of Critical Thinking

    1. Is it falsifiable?
For any explanation to be considered science, it must be falsifiable. It must be possible to obtain some evidence that would falsify the claim. This is what makes science science, and why most significantly evidence matters.

    2. Is it logical?
All conclusions or predictions drawn from an explanation must logically follow. This is important because explanations are tested by evaluating such predictions.

    3. Is it comprehensive?
Does the explanation account for all of the available evidence? If not, then how can it possibly be true? This means you cannot pick and choose among the available evidence and select only those items that support your explanation. To be a viable alternative explanation, all the available evidence must be explained.

    4. Has everyone been honest?
Anybody offering an explanation has an obligation to weigh all the evidence and reach a rational conclusion. You always must be on guard of self-deception, and you must be willing to abandon any explanation if the evidence contradicts it. Science makes progress when falsified explanations are abandoned and replacing them with new explanations.

    5. Is it replicable?
Any evidence offered in support of an explanation must be capable of being obtained independently and confirmed by someone else. If something repeatedly cannot be confirmed independently, then the original evidence becomes suspect, and so does the explanation it supported.

    6. Is it sufficient?
Is the evidence offered sufficient to support the truth of the explanation? The belief we place in an explanation must remain proportionate to the amount of credible evidence that has been accumulated in its support. Remember the burden of proof rests on the person putting forth the explanation, and the more extraordinary the claim, the more solid the evidence required to support it. Further the absence of falsifying evidence is not the same as the presence of evidence that confirms a claim or explanation.

    Conclusion
If an explanation or claim passes on all six rules, then you are justified in considering it to be true. Of course, this does not provide a guarantee of truth, but it means you have a good basis for supporting the explanation. If an explanation fails one of the six rules, then it should be rejected or at least treated with great skepticism.
