Washington Post blows it

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 12, 2008 07:31 AM

In a page 1 news story, Washington Post reporter Anne Kornblut accuses Sarah Palin of asserting “that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.”

Just one problem: Palin said no such thing. She simply said that Iraq-bound U.S. troops would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”

As McCain Campaign blogger Michael Goldfarb notes, “It seems we are to assume that this group [al Qaeda in Iraq], despite sharing a name and leadership with the group responsible for the 9/11 attacks, has nothing at all to do with those who ‘planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.’”

No connection at all?

Video of Palin’s speech here.

***

Since they think tying 9/11 and Iraq together is headline news now, perhaps the Washington Post can next publish a front-page story slamming our troops for making a connection between 9/11 and fighting in Iraq. Let me reprint one of the excerpts I posted in my main 9/11 anniversary post yesterday:

Sgt. Desion Fulks watched the World Trade Center towers come down on television from Fort Rucker, Ala. He re-enlisted three weeks later.

Capt. Joseph Mason, a reservist at the time, immediately volunteered for combat duty after watching what happened in New York and Washington, D.C. He deployed to Iraq two years later with the first wave a troops.

“I was sitting at home, looking at the television, seeing the carnage of the Pentagon and the Trade towers, and I felt I had to do something,” he said.

Both men, and about 5,000 other soldiers with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas begin training at Fort Irwin on Thursday, the seven-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and one other commercial jet. Many of the soldiers, who will deploy to Iraq at the end of December, said the images of Sept. 11, 2001 still flash through their minds.

“I will never forget what happened on 9/11,” said Sgt. 1st Class Mark Linares. “It’s been so long since 9/11, but it is still in my mind like it was yesterday.”

Linares, who was with the 82nd Airborne Division when the attacks occurred and knew he would be one of the first soldiers on the ground where ever they had to go. Some soldiers in the 82nd Airborne were in Afghanistan the next month. Capt. Jennifer Bowersox was part of a unit that went to Kuwait when the ground war in Iraq began in 2003. She said then soldiers talked about Sept. 11 as their reason, and they still talk about it today.

“It must be on every soldier’s mind. It’s certainly on mine,” she said. “You’re wearing the American flag on your sleeve. You’re thinking this happened in my nation, and we can never allow it to happen in the United States again.”

Boy did President McCain pick the best VP going – she’s intelligent, witty, plain spoken, and to the point (what Democrats call nuance, normal folks call lying) – but the best thing about her selection is, since he named her as his VP, she’s kept Obama and Biden out of the hadlines for nearly two weeks!

Things are not well in Obamaland – two weeks is a lifetime to be off the radar of the American voter, especially for independents.

The moderators for the Columbia Forum with John McCain and Barack Obama, Judy Woodruff and Time magazine’s Richard Stengel, did a pretty good job of asking direct questions without a condescending, patronizing demeanor as Charlie Gibson did with Sarah Palin. She might want to consider an interview with one of them. I favored Richard Stengel over Judy Woodruff a bit.

Now the buzz is Sarah Palin has had a passport for only one year implying she has no foreign policy experience. So what. How many heads of state did Bill Clinton meet with prior to winning the Presidency? How about Jimmy Carter? Barack Obama had his first meetings with heads of state while campaigning. You don’t deal with heads of state on the foreigh affairs committee. Why is Sarah Palin held to a higher standard?

Any fool can have a passport and could have traveled the world over twice but that doesn’t make them foreign policy experts.

Everybody understand: There are two intentions whenever the MSM does as Charlie Tuna did.

The first reason–the bias side one–is to plant false ideas in people’s heads. By asserting the false premise in a question, they are planting it in people’s minds. If people believe the interviewer, the job is done.

The second–the journalism/”vetting” side one (and one that actually makes sense in journalistic ethics)–is to test the understanding, skill, and wit of the interviewee (in this case, GOV Palin). By putting such things forward, one can see how well the interviewee can handle such situations. If the interviewee can handle such questions well, they look good. If not, they don’t.

Charlie Tuna is not ignorant. He knew what he was saying, and he knew some of what he was saying was not true. He will justify doing so by claiming to simply be pushing to see GOV Palin’s ability to respond. This will cover his obvious biased intent.

I said elsewhere that Charlie Tuna surprised me, in that I didn’t think he’d go so far with the second reason so as to additionally do the first. Both parties there failed: GOV Palin failed to adequately put Charlie Tuna down, and Charlie Tuna failed to adhere to any sense of fairness in questioning.

    Just my perception.

    Lileks batted that one yesterday.

I agree that travel broadens one, and the Grand Tour is a jolly tonic, but it is possible to live a rich, diverse, intellectually satisfying life without ever setting foot in Paris, and you wish the Germans had gotten that message. It’s not as if America doesn’t have magnificent museums – in fact, a Louvre exhibit is coming to Minneapolis this year. We have cathedrals; they’re just younger. We have great architecture, and most of it wasn’t built by inbred white-whigged autocrats in tights who swanned around a mansion built on the backs of the peasants.

I’ve been advocating either that or simply retiring “journalism” as a major for some time. When the “reporters” become wannabe political players, and instead of reeling them back in their “editors” become enablers, it’s time for a professional mercy-killing.

As in, put them out of our misery.

But we all knew this was coming, or should’ve known. The media have been acting like split personalities at a football game: one moment they’re cheerleaders for Hopenchange, the next moment they’re on the field blocking for him.

What has them in an enraged frenzy right now is that, despite more than two years of building him up and covering for him, Hopenchange is losing. And so they turn up the volume of the attacks on Palin, because they associate her with his recent reversal of fortune.

But hey, at least they’re moving back to garden-variety lies, smears and distortions about things like her grasp of foreign policy, instead of gossiping about her family.

For “journalists” these days, that’s a real sign of progress.

I have to say; at this point I’m pretty fed up with the race.

The irony is, I’m likely going to vote for McCain / Palin now (as opposed to voting for a 3rd party as a confidence vote) because it seems they might actually have a chance to win in my state. Plain was a good choice, she was a shrewd choice; she was likely the best choice (politically). She was also chosen because she is a woman and it plays well to the voters IMHO.

I know this is going to drive many of you insane, but I share the opinion of a few others here. IMHO, Romney is a more qualified candidate. Previously the Democrats could be accused of running a candidate only because that candidate is a female or is black. Now, we are guilty of the same thing. Honestly, does anyone truly think a white male with identical experience, views, and record as Palin would have been chosen? Of course not and I can’t understand why this doesn’t annoy people on some level.

McCain / Palin will get my vote, but as it’s been said before, I’ll be holding my nose when I do it. I am glad we can defeat the left, but I can’t bring myself to be a cheerleader for this. Last election we complained that Democrats were the “anything but Bush” crowd. Now we are the same thing, Karma I guess.

I watched Sarah Palin last night and I was STUNNED. She said she was wired a certain way. That is absolutely accurate. The word that best describes her mindset is the German word, “Dienst.” The word in English means “service” but with implied obligation or committment. Her word is her bond. When she agrees to something the committment is total.

She has the decisive mindest of a combat arms soldier. Mission focus. If she agrees to coordinate fund rasising for a charity, she will meet the contribution goal. If she is a fireman, she goes into a burning building without hesitation, if needed. If she is a platoon leader and told to hold a position, she will hold it and inspire her people to hold with her.

If our country is committed to assisting another country, she will not waffle. Her word is her bond.

She is probably not fully qualified at the moment to be the President if need be. But she will be at 12:00 noon on January 20. If they both started preparing today, I would bet my house she would “do her homework” better than Obama. NO DOUBT and that is not meant to be a criticism of Obama. She is just that focused and obligated.

I have been priviliged to work and serve with a select number of people like her, but I have never seen these traits exhibited so clearly by someone at the national level. This is a superlative leader, who sees herself as a public servant. How rare and refreshing.

No. The bottom line is that you are willfully, deliberately and stubbornly misinterpreting what she said, and making a huge leap of illogic in order to do so.

There is no way that anyone who a) speaks English and b) is even passingly familiar with current events could take her statement to mean that Saddam had a direct hand in 9/11.

Since you’re an idiot let me use an example to illustrate. If I make the statement “US forces are stationed in Germany today to help guard Europe against a menacing power bent on regional domination” you would have to be a profoundly stupid person to think I was saying that our troops are fighting the Third Reich. But that’s exactly how you’re interpreting Palin’s statement when you insist she’s linking 9/11 to Saddam.

I was thinking this morning about the differences between the thought processes of liberal Americans and conservative Americans. It occured to me that the left, on issues like experience, trust, and honesty matter very little when choosing to support their candidate. For them, it seems that as long as the candidate is a Democrat, they will support him, no matter what.

Conservatives, on the other hand, believe honor, integrity, and truth are important attributes in a candidate. Republican candidates who appear to have idealogical flaws, are closely scrutinized and in some cases, rebuked by Party hardliners.

If the Republican Party nominated a candidate that espoused the Democrat Party standards, and who might even be a better choice for Democrats than theie own candidate, he or she would never get Democrat votes. Why? Because that candidate doesn’t have a (D) next to his/her name. Democrats will vote partyline no matter what!

At that brings me to my point. If Democrats can vote for a candidate regardless of experience, honor, or integrity, no matter what, then why can’t they seem to support their country, despite all it’s flaws, against mankind’s enemies NO MATTER WHAT?

No man, no country, no party is without it’s flaws, but to convertly or overtly supoort your country’s enemies, by words or deeds, is not patriotic. Cowardice in thought or deed does not affect freedom.

As all true patriots know, “Freedom is not ‘free’!” One would think that after 200 years, liberals would understand this…

Ahmed Hikmat Shakir was arrested in Qatar shortly after 9/11, having been hastily recalled to Iraq. The Qataris found he carried telephone numbers for the safe houses of the 1993 World Trade Center bombers.
