Washington Post blows it

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 12, 2008 07:31 AM

In a page 1 news story, Washington Post reporter Anne Kornblut accuses Sarah Palin of asserting “that the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein helped al-Qaeda plan the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.”

Just one problem: Palin said no such thing. She simply said that Iraq-bound U.S. troops would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”

As McCain Campaign blogger Michael Goldfarb notes, “It seems we are to assume that this group [al Qaeda in Iraq], despite sharing a name and leadership with the group responsible for the 9/11 attacks, has nothing at all to do with those who ‘planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.’”

No connection at all?

Video of Palin’s speech here.

***

Since they think tying 9/11 and Iraq together is headline news now, perhaps the Washington Post can next publish a front-page story slamming our troops for making a connection between 9/11 and fighting in Iraq. Let me reprint one of the excerpts I posted in my main 9/11 anniversary post yesterday:

Sgt. Desion Fulks watched the World Trade Center towers come down on television from Fort Rucker, Ala. He re-enlisted three weeks later.

Capt. Joseph Mason, a reservist at the time, immediately volunteered for combat duty after watching what happened in New York and Washington, D.C. He deployed to Iraq two years later with the first wave a troops.

“I was sitting at home, looking at the television, seeing the carnage of the Pentagon and the Trade towers, and I felt I had to do something,” he said.

Both men, and about 5,000 other soldiers with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas begin training at Fort Irwin on Thursday, the seven-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and one other commercial jet. Many of the soldiers, who will deploy to Iraq at the end of December, said the images of Sept. 11, 2001 still flash through their minds.

“I will never forget what happened on 9/11,” said Sgt. 1st Class Mark Linares. “It’s been so long since 9/11, but it is still in my mind like it was yesterday.”

Linares, who was with the 82nd Airborne Division when the attacks occurred and knew he would be one of the first soldiers on the ground where ever they had to go. Some soldiers in the 82nd Airborne were in Afghanistan the next month. Capt. Jennifer Bowersox was part of a unit that went to Kuwait when the ground war in Iraq began in 2003. She said then soldiers talked about Sept. 11 as their reason, and they still talk about it today.

“It must be on every soldier’s mind. It’s certainly on mine,” she said. “You’re wearing the American flag on your sleeve. You’re thinking this happened in my nation, and we can never allow it to happen in the United States again.”

Maybe Obama saying 57 states was a joke, maybe he was tired and was deciding between 50 and 47 (the number he had visited).

But Obama knows the central tenets of US foreign policy. He knows the Bush doctrine (invade if you feel like it, but you have to say they’re a threat first).

Do you realize McCain chose someone who have to be briefed on what US foreign policy is so that she can have opinions about it? You might think Obama is too inexperienced, but at least he knows what the issues are.

And you are saying what exactly LGM? That our soldiers were NOT fighting al Qaida in Iraq?

Then please tell us LGM what in the WORLD was THIS GUY doing in Iraq and why did we kill him? HMMMMM?

Come on LGM, let’s hear it; WAS HE OR WAS HE NOT a part of the SAME GROUP who

I’m not going to try disabusing you of this notion because it would be a waste of time. Instead I’ll repeat my question: if Palin is such a hapless amateur then why is the brilliant, erudite Obama getting his clock cleaned by her? And if a rube like Palin can so badly throw him off his game what do you think our enemies will do to him?

This is BS. This is your liberal interpretation of Pres. Bush’s foreign policy. This phrase was also coined by the media. The Bush Doctrine is composed of many approaches that you fail to address.

Do you realize McCain chose someone who have to be briefed on what US foreign policy is so that she can have opinions about it? You might think Obama is too inexperienced, but at least he knows what the issues are.

Do you ever get out of your self-love, Obamabot, one-way looking glass? How do you know that Palin was briefed on anything? How do you know that she doesn’t already have her own ideas on foreign policy? Have you been reading the lefty blogs again? Nahhhh….

What, exactly does the inexperienced, junior senator from Illinois know about anything that wasn’t put in front of him by a campaign advisor? Has Obummer mentioned that he’ll meet dictators without preconditions? Has Obummer mentioned where he’ll cap taxes at? Has Obummer mentioned what he’s going to do about illegal immigration? Education (besides just throwing money at it)? Why did Obummer lie about meeting with Canada about trade and Canada called him on it?

Yeah, I’m really, really impressed with Obummer’s trustworthiness and originality. I have even less trust in him now after him promising that he’ll cut programs from the military that will prepare people like my husband for future wars.

Mathman, you’re full of it. You not only need to get a clue, but perhaps shed the illusions you have about your own candidate.

That’s your interpretation of what the left describes as the “Bush Doctrine”. What Palin was trying to determine, is what Gibson’s interpretation was, so she could give an intelligent answer – which she did – unlike Obama, who would have stuttered and hemmed and hawed for 5 minutes. Obama knows little or nothing about anything but what his handlers tell him, as he proves every time he tries to speak without a teleprompter.

I applaud your commitment to homeschool your children. When I was stationed in the Air Force in Utah, my wife and I homeschooled as well because the teachers just didn’t seem to give a flip about what was best for the kids.
But, when we moved to Texas, we found a wonderful public school system unsoiled by the liberal ilk being employed at most public schools in the nation today. In the morning, there’s an assembly where parents are encouraged to attend where we sing and pray and have a really fun time with our children. The teachers tell us everyday that they are praying for our kids to do well. It brings a tear to my eye when I think of the blessing this school system has brought to my family. I’m not going to say exactly where it is, just that it’s in North Texas because I’m terrified that the libtards will discover it and sue it out of existence.

As for Obama knowing “the central tenets of US foreign policy,” he knows exactly what is put in front of him on a teleprompter. He has proven that repeatedly. No doubt there are Al Qaeda in those countries, too. Besides, Pres Bush has already said, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

To continue to connect 9/11 to Iraq is done only to justify our prescence there. Though I do not recall what the exact reaction to 9/11 was in Iraq, it was not the same as in Gaza, where there are videos showing people actually rejoicing in the death of thousands of Americans. Though 9/11 was not planned and executed from Gaza.

What was the reaction in Iran to 9/11? It was that Iran shared intelligence. What was the reaction to our efforts in Afghanistan from Pakistan? It was to let Al Qaeda escape through the mountains into Pakistan.

Note, it was Saddam Hussein that was our tool, which we used to go after Iran. You don’t don’t throw away your tools, you sharpen them.

Finally, it is nice to defend the innocent, but wouldn’t it be better to go after the perpertraitors of 9/11? Not attack those who have helped us in our efforts in Afghanistan, or that have helped us in the past, but to go after those who have stood in our way?
