“At first I thought Sarah Palin was some kind of Republican pandering — a misguided attempt to woo Hillary voters over to the dark side, as if they believed women voters were so stupid that they would vote for anyone in skirt, but now I see that she is much, much worse.”

“I have nothing against hockey moms — I just don’t want to be one. If Sarah Palin had her way, she would take away that right not to be a mom. She wants to outlaw abortion — so to call her a feminist is as laughable as calling evangelicals ‘Christians.’ They shouldn’t have the right to call themselves Christian, for they have no Christ-like attributes. I am a feminist and a Christian — and when I see Sarah Palin — I see neither.” — statement to ABCNews.com, 9/11/08

Thanks, Soldier, This makes up for the ongoing bad news about McAmnesty and his welcome-illegals policy. Just added this page to my “favorites.”

I live fairly close to a military base in VA, and we have lots of foreign wives coming in to the local Y every morning, spouting their support for Obama and dripping with condescension about how stupid Americans would have to be to vote Republican.

My, my, my, won’t it be interesting to see how the U.N. votes on stuff in the coming days? I think we’ll see a bit of an attitude adjustment from our European-appeasement contingent SOON. Most say Europe is already too far gone to be able to defend itself for any reason. Looks like D-Day has finally arrived for them.

I can’t wait for our folks to deploy ASAP.

Did anyone see Neil Cavuto’s show on Friday? After the “if you don’t evacuate, you will face certain death” proclamation came out, they talked to a local Galveston bartender, who had about 200 people on the deck getting hammered. I’d love to know what happened to those morons.

Frankly, Texas is such a kick-a$$ state, I’d think they’d consider their duty done when it comes to ijits and that they should start in on the clean-up/rebuilding. They’re usually so no-nonsense. I’m more than a little surprised/confused that they haven’t made illegal immigration a state’s right issue and dealt with it themselves since the feds won’t.

    4. Thomas L. Friedman: Making America Stupid
    5. Frank Rich: The Palin-Whatshisname Ticket
    6. Maureen Dowd: Bering Straight Talk
    7. Paul Krugman: Blizzard of Lies
    8. The Bipolar Puzzle
    9. McCain Barbs Stirring Outcry as Distortions
    10. Flying the Unfriendly Skies

Note that 8 out of the 10 articles…

Are these people really allowed to moonlight for the Obama campaign?

Eight more reasons to vote for Obama :) :)

BTW, NYT is considered the most prestigious and the best newspaper in America. It has so far won something like 90 Pulitzer Prizes. The International Herald Tribune (the best and the most popular American newspaper outside USA) is owned by NYT and Washington Post.

I don’t have a lot of sympathy for those who stayed behind instead of evacuating. But remember, there is a certain segment of the population that is completely cut off from any news and from the outside world in general. It is hard to believe, but I know people like that. They don’t watch anything on tv except cable reality shows or MTV. They aren’t interested in what is going on, even in their own community. And these people have one vote, the same as those of us who are informed. Frustrating. I live in Minneapolis. We had that horrible collapse of our 35W bridge a while back and it was on all the news programs, national, etc. I imagine most of the readers of this blog knew about it. A lady at work hadn’t heard about it and didn’t know what we were talking about the next day. There are many like that. Uninformed and uninterested. So if there were orders to evacuate, some may not even have known there was a storm coming. Having said that, maybe these storms are a good way to thin the herd.

On another topic, I heard a distinctly dishonest Obama ad on the radio recently. This is the VA/MD/WV tristate area, essentially. It started out with someone introducing himself as the president of something that sounded like a gun rights group. He said that he, personally, was for the second amendment, then started talking about how he was supporting Obama for economic reasons. It never said Obama had any interest in the second amendment whatsoever, but listeners were clearly supposed to think that it had. So much for Obama’s campaign being honest about his views. His NRA ranking shows pretty clearly where he stands on guns, even if we forget his “bitter” comment.

Is anyone keeping a list of “gaffes” Sarah Palin has supposedly made since becoming a VP candidate? Like the “Bush Doctrine” setup, the Drive-By Media keep tossing out charges against Sarah and then speed away before the charges are proven false.

Remember the first major gaffe Sarah was accused of making when she commented on Fannie and Freddie in Colorado Springs?

Sarah Palin said Fannie and Freddie had “gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers.”

They called this a gaffe because the companies “aren’t taxpayer funded but operate as private companies.” Their experts referred to Sarah’s comments as “somewhat nonsensical because up until yesterday there was sort of no public funding there.”

Well, now I know why their expert said “sort of no public funding there.” I just got through reading an article at MSMBC.com that contradicts these experts. It not only confirms what Michelle has been blogging about Fannie and Freddie, but it also confirms that Sarah Palin was 100% correct in her statement.

A budget office study estimated that taxpayer subsidies to these companies were worth $20 billion in 2004 alone. That’s a big “sort of”. $20 Billion per year may not be “expensive” to a liberal, but I think most people who actually pay taxes would think it is.

Here are two quotes from the article that confirm Sarah was right when she said Fannie and Freddie were “too big and too expensive”:

Near the end of the Clinton administration, some of its officials had concluded the companies were so large that their sheer size posed a risk to the financial system

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac enjoyed the nearest thing to a license to print money. The companies borrowed money at below-market interest rates based on the perception that the government guaranteed repayment, and then they used the money to buy mortgages that paid market interest rates. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan called the difference between the interest rates a “big, fat gap.” The budget office study found that it was worth $3.9 billion in 1995. By 2004, the office would estimate it was worth $20 billion.

Does anyone know of any other supposed gaffes by Sarah Palin that have not yet been refuted?

Rather than give out vouchers for hotels/gas/expense money to nudge those same sorry butts into leaving – I say, send them a bill. Take the total of what it cost for those Blackhawk helicopters, divide it up and lien their property if you have to, but send the message. Placing the lives of all first responders to unneccessary risk is unforgiveable and should not be tolerated.

Think about it. A vote for McCain means Obama needs TWO votes to keep up with him. Abstaining from voting gives Obama an edge. Do the math.

I just do not trust McCain. He’s part of the problem in DC. If McCain gets too vocal on shamnesty (which he hasn’t lately) I may just pass on the top of the ticket. The libs say it’s a lie because they think she meant Megawatt production not raw material resource fuels used to make energy. I don’t know the numbers and I actually did look for the facts on this. I could only find Alaska is #2 in crude oil production (Texas is #1). If you factor in natural gas and coal I intuitively think she’s right.

Are you talking about CERN near Geneva, on Swiss-French border? CERN stands for Centre Européen pour la recherche nucléaire (European Center for nuclear research) but the United States has an observatory status. Actually the US govt invested something like 500,000,000 € for the latest CERN project. I heard that CERN is the biggest American laboratory. I’m a medical student and not a physicist so I don’t know what exactly they are doing there. All I know is that there is a huge circular 30-kilometer tunnel beneath Meyrin (Switzerland) and Pays de Gex (France) used for experiments (particle accelerators). Actually I have visited CERN with my school in 1998 (I was something like 14). It looks like a huge computer lab with many many computers and lots of mainframes (sp?) and storage devices… Internet’s WWW / HTML were invented there. If you want to visit CERN, take bus “9″ (SEE PICTURE) from Gare Cornavin (Geneva main train station) or Bus “Y” if coming from France. Good luck!

So what is everybody’s opinion on how gas prices jumping like they did will play out in Congress this week.

They didn’t jump all that much here. Just eight cents at the nearby gas station. My mother-in-law who lives in VA said it jumped more than thirty cents down there. I think most people even with the reduction in price still want Congress to take action towards our energy independence. No amount of relief at the pump will be enough until we are drilling in ANWR or in the OCS.

How much longer will Pelosi be able to keep the Republicans from getting the American Energy Bill up for a vote?

The do-nothing Congress will work toward getting the second stimulus package passed. As for the energy bill, not so much. How long? How long have they kept it at bay thus far? Too long.

Not if you mean am I worried about the fear mongering going on by some fringe elements of the scientific community and gleefully passed on by the media.

I’m pretty excited about the possibilities of new discoveries and I’ll be following developments with eager anticipation. And I was disappointed that the US passed up the opportunity to build one of our own.

Ooh, now I get to learn to use the quote function! Thanks from me, too, 30 pcs of silver!

The responses I’ve seen from the CERN staff to the “fearmongering” just haven’t been very effective rebuttals to the majority of the population. It seems like mostly they respond with arrogance and papers that are both badly written and above most people’s heads. They dismiss it as fearmongering and such, but aren’t very effective in explaining why it’s only fearmongering, or at rebutting any rebuttals to points that have been made. (I’m talking about rebutting assertions like “Hawking radiation doesn’t exist,” not assertions that somebody has, inevitably, come up with a way to associate 666 with the project, which aren’t worth responding to, in my opinion.) I would think being better at reassuring the public would be worthwhile for its own sake.
I would be curious to hear an explanation that goes into a bit more detail than “Trust us! All our theories are right! It’s not like humanity has ever been wrong before!” and fails to rely on me understanding words that I can’t look up in my Astronomy textbook that is less than ten years old. I’d be particularly curious to understand more about the reliance on the existence of Hawking radiation, the formation of mBHs, how the properties of mBHs are different than those of regular bhs, and why they’re not waiting to find out more about these via other methods.
I thought the US was in possession of a much less powerful one that has been in use since 2000?

I found the quote. She said Alaska produces “20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy” She was probably thinking of just oil and gas production because in her next sentence she refers to the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

The reference the McCain camp gives to support her claim is the following:

Alaska Resource Development Council: Alaska’s oil and gas industry has produced more than 16 billion barrels of oil and 6 billion cubic feet of natural gas, accounting for an average of 20 percent of the entire nation’s domestic production.

She may have been a bit loose with her terms, but I don’t thing she was intentionally trying to deceive anyone. I wish I could say the same about Obama and Biden on some of their numerous misstatements.

NestingHawk, the biggest reason I don’t worry about the alleged danger is that it has been pointed out that collisions of the same energy have already been occurring in the upper atmosphere by highly energetic cosmic rays. If the Earth were going to be destroyed by collisions of that high of an energy level, it would have already happened. The problem with those collisions is they don’t happen in a place where we can thoroughly study them, hence the need for the LHC.

Understanding Hawking radiation requires a bit of background in quantum physics. It’s one of those things that’s hard to give a short answer to. It involves such quantum principles as the uncertainty principle and the formation of virtual particles.

I thought the US was in possession of a much less powerful one that has been in use since 2000?

    Are you thinking of Fermilab?

The trend of particle accelerators is toward more powerful collisions. As the levels of energy we are able to explore increases, we are able to learn more about particle physics. The less powerful accelerators have taught us much. One of those things is that a predicted theoretical particle such as the Higgs boson is not to be found within that range.

I am by no means an expert on any of this. I’m just an amateur astronomer who has read extensively on the subjects of relativity and quantum physics. Knowledge of both is required for a deeper understanding of how the universe works. I might add that one of the best things that happened to astronomy was when astronomers and particle physicists began talking to each other.

The existence of antimatter has already been confirmed by particle physics experiments. Antimatter particles can be created in the lab, but have a short lifespan for obvious reasons. No destruction has resulted it from because the energy released by a single positron or antiproton is insignificant. Creating massive amounts of antimatter would probably require too much energy to be worth the return, plus there would be huge technical difficulties in storing and transporting it.

(Perhaps left-wing bloggers who have called for an investigation into Sarah’s supposed adultery should be reminded of this.)

Wikipedia has another definition of the Clinton Doctrine:

President Bill Clinton said the following, which was considered the Clinton Doctrine:

…The question we must ask is, what are the consequences to our security of letting conflicts fester and spread. We cannot, indeed, we should not, do everything or be everywhere. But where our values and our interests are at stake, and where we can make a difference, we must be prepared to do so.

I wasn’t aware of this doctrine. It’s good to know that Bill Clinton said we could go to war for oil, as long as oil is considered one of our “interests”.

I’d say that’s a purty good translation, NHawk. The particular big prize CERN is eyeing with this is finding what’s commonly called the “God Particle” (Higgs boson particle).

Here’s a news story that’s not too over-run with heavy scientific/particle physics jargon that may be of interest to some:

    Dr Peter Higgs: God’s particle

    A snippet:

“Officially it is known as the Higgs Boson though Higgs admits that Brout and Englert both deserve to be included in the nomenclature. In physics jargon, it is usually referred to as the “God particle”, much to the dismay of Higgs, who is a staunch atheist.

Ironically, given that CERN rejected the original paper, the Large Hadron Collider project may succeed in finally nailing it down. If so, Higgs, Brout and Englert are all more or less guaranteed the Nobel Prize. Higgs says he’s keeping a bottle of champagne handy, though it would take at least three years for the LHC data to offer proof, one way or another.

Although Higgs is highly respected in his field, not everyone believes the Higgs Boson exists. Superstar physicist Steven Hawking has reiterated several times that he doesn’t think the Higgs Boson exists and has taken a $100 bet to that effect. Higgs and Hawking had a recent public spat with Higgs saying, “I am very doubtful about Steven’s calculations. Frankly I don’t think they are good enough”.
    -end of snippet-

He could be wrong, but I’d give Steve the benefit of the doubt on this one. It’s not for nothing they refered to him as a “superstar” in the article.

He could be wrong, but I’d give Steve the benefit of the doubt on this one. It’s not for nothing they refered to him as a “superstar” in the article.

Steven Hawking is too brilliant and has accomplished too much for me to dismiss any of his ideas out of hand, but on some of his ideas I wonder if he has gotten too abstract in his thinking to be on the right track.

Here are a few of the charges Palin has not yet been able to refute.

    The Real Sarah Palin

Few people realize that Sarah Palin:
    • Personally carried plague infested rats to Europe and started the “Black Death” that killed over ½ of the population.
    • Was at the helm when the Titanic struck the ice berg.
    • Shot the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo and ignited World War I.
    • Was Vladimir Ilyich Lenin’s mistress.
    • Served as an advisor to Reinhard Heydrich at the Wannsee Conference.
    • Was Adolf Hilter’s first wife.
    • Stole atomic secrets and passed them to the Soviets.
    • Warned Castro about the invasion at the Bay of Pigs.
    • Smuggled Soviet nuclear missiles into Cuba and started the Cuban Missile Crisis.
    • Shot John F. Kennedy.
    • Was driving Teddy Kennedy’s car on the night of 18 July 1969.
    • Served as a military advisor to Vo Nguyen Giap during the Tet Offensive.
    • Caused the “meltdown” at Three Mile Island.
    • Served as a personal assistant to Ollie North
    • Helped Fawn Hall smuggle classified documents out of the White House.
    • Planted a bomb on board the shuttle Challenger.
    • Assisted with counting votes in Florida in 2000.
    • Served as a personal assistant to Katherine Harris.
    • Put Hillary Clinton’s Rose Law Firm billing records in her book room at the White House.
    • Invited Vince Foster to Fort Marcy Park on the evening of 20 July 1993.
    • Developed several species of plants that actually create carbon dioxide to speed global warming.
    • Was the mistress of Saddam Hussein.
    • Served as a military advisor to President Saakashvili in July 2008.

“And this is just the tip of the ice berg.” Ironically, Sarah Palin first uttered that phrase on the night of 14 April 1912.

    This just in from Drudge!

“Lindsay Lohan Lashes Out at Sarah Palin.”

I think I saw it at HotAir earlier today. Of course, I greatly enjoyed the irony of one airhead celebrity endorsing another airhead celebrity. Maybe she can shoot an advert for Obama during “free time” during one of her stays at rehab. I hope so, at least!

Did anyone actually read the Sarah Palin piece in US Weekly? I tried to stomach it, but could only take about half a page. Complete smear job. The cover was bad enough, but the article itself is just sickening.
