Democrats pass hoax drilling bill
Nancy Pelosi declared drilling a “hoax.”
Now, after getting hammered by the GOP and public opinion demanding that the Democrats in charge take steps toward energy independence, San Fran Nan and her do-nothing crew have passed a drilling bill that is, well, a hoax. The bill is HR 6899.
Text here. The roll call vote is here.
CQ reports tonight:
After months of debate about expanding offshore oil and gas drilling, the House passed legislation Tuesday that could open up large areas off U.S. coastlines to energy production.
The bill (HR 6899) passed 236-189 despite the objections of Republicans who said it would do little to boost offshore oil and gas production. President Bush threatened a veto.
A Republican attempt to stall the measure was defeated. The chamber voted 191-226 against a motion to recommit the bill to the Natural Resources Committee.
After watching Republicans gain political traction in recent weeks with calls for more offshore drilling, Democratic leaders hope the legislation will provide political cover for moderate members of their caucus who face tough re-election fights.
Democrats touted the bill as a compromise that would expand domestic production and invest in alternative energy sources. It would allow drilling beyond 100 miles off U.S. shores and give states the option of allowing production beyond 50 miles from the shores. It proposes major incentives for renewable energy, building efficiency and advanced technologies for coal-fired power plants.
The American Conservative Union called out the Dem bluff earlier today:
When we were kids, we all played a variation of the game “Let’s Pretend” in which we pretended to do something or be somebody knowing it was make-believe. The authors of this bill are playing “Let’s Pretend” with the American people, pretending they are passing a bill to increase domestic energy production when they know it will do no such thing.
By eliminating revenue sharing for the states in royalties for offshore oil and gas drilling while requiring states to approve the drilling leases, the bill’s sponsors know it is unlikely the states will bother to give their approval. Even Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana has said this bill “will not see the light of day in the Senate” should it pass the House.
The bill prohibits drilling less than 50 miles offshore when the sponsors know that, to give an example, 95% of the known reserves off the coast of California are less than 50 miles out.
Once again, as in other energy legislation, the bill needlessly increases taxes that only serve to increase the cost of energy. The bill will also increase electricity bills for the average consumer by forcing utility companies to use alternative fuels regardless of the cost. This provision has already been rejected by the Senate in a previous energy bill.
The American people are demanding we change our bankrupt energy policy which has prevented the U.S. from utilizing our own resources and made us dangerously dependent on foreign oil supplies from unfriendly countries. They will not fall for a bill full of gimmicks which does not do the job.
Sham:
Democratic leaders called it a step toward energy independence, but Republicans labeled it a “sham” because most of the estimated 18 billion barrels of oil believed to lie below off-limits coastal waters are within 50 miles of land and will remain out of bounds.
The measure passed in a largely party-line vote of 236-189. It now goes to the Senate, where energy will be the topic later in the week. Thirteen Democrats bucked their leadership and voted against the measure.

It’s nothing but a sham. Pelosi and her verminous brethren have absolutely zero intention of seeing a real energy bill through, especially before November. These people will undermine the troops and our national economic and energy security at any cost.
My response is to curse fluently, which I will do in the privacy of my own home. I do not wish to offend Michelle or her commenters.
But, DAMMIT!!!! This cannot be allowed to stand. I will stand in shame now because Charlie Melancon is my rep in Congress… I knew that he would probably run unopposed and I didn’t put my papers in (school, family, job, blah blah blah). My bad… I’m sorry.
I assure you, in two years, that turkey will have to deal with ME!!
The Dems are banking on the idea that the American electorate is stupid…
Its their mantra… divide… and prevail… because the people are not smart enough to see through our transparent tactics…
What will be interesting is how the MSM spins this.
A strong national energy policy is essential to our nations national security. Pelosi and company are playing games with our country’s future. Imagine what the future holds if BHO/Biden win in November. Frightening.
I’m real disappointed in Bob Inglis.
Another step down the liberal path to the ruin of America.
I’m pleased to see that my congressman, David Davis, did not vote for this atrocity.
Please God, give the Republicans in the Senate, and a few Democrats, a BACKBONE to stand up to this crap!
Watch which alternative energy solutions get the most support by the Dems, then keep an eye on the rich friends of the Dems. Any guess where their money will be going?
You don’t really think all those Dems were idle on their multi-week vacation, do you? WATCH THE MONEY…..
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!
Traitors
My letter to my Congressman….
You voted for HR 6899? Why? It is a joke that accomplishes ZERO. I want the government to get the &&&& out of the way and let energy exploration go forward. I want the U.S. energy independent in ten years. You, your party and your 9% apporval rating, heading for 5% is not getting the job done.
As we say in business. If you cannot get it done your replacement will. Can you tell my patience is at an end?
And while I am at it, if the Congress wants to find who is at fault for the financial mess, they only need to look in the mirror. We do not need a House investigation. We need a special prosecutor. He can start with Chris Dodd and Charley Rangel.
Well Jeb Hensarling stood his ground. Now I’ll make sure that Kay Bailey and John Cornyn know which way the wind blows.
As for the rest of them…I shant waste breath cussing them. I would rather just go to bed and rise to a new day.
G’nite all…keep the faith!
15 Republicans need to receive ‘Pink Slips’ in November.
Hopefully it can be stopped in the Senate.
My representative, John Sullivan (R) of Oklahoma, voted against the bill. However, our sole Democrat in the Oklahoma delegation, Dan Boren, voted for the useless legislation. This is going to the newspaper so we can ask, “Why?”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Nancy Pelosi is the best thing to happen to the Republican Party since Ronald W. Reagan. Good show ol’ lady!
I am seriously lacking in my understanding of the law with regard to offshore drilling. If international waters extends out to 12 miles, then how does an entiry such as California or a local entity such as Santa Barbara determine what happens 50 miles offshore?
Or am I just way off base that there is no correlation between surface and seafloor?
P.S. Blow this bill out of the water!
my reaction – Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
At least my Representative voted NO. My Senators are another story. Sorry, but I will have to send the Republican back, if I can. His Dem opponent is Al Franken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really need to move out of the Socialist Republic of Minnesota.
In 1983 President Reagan
declared the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (which claimed rights for the United States to all waters up to 200 nautical miles (230 statute
miles or 370 kilometers) from the U.S. coastline. In 1994 the International Law of the Sea granted the same 200 nautical miles to all countries.
The legacy continues.
Now, the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) declares a U.S. Exclusive Ass Whooping Zone extending anywhere we damn well please, any time we feel like it.
God Bless you all, and God bless America!
What is pathetically sad is that the Dems see “doing nothing” as something. We can’t drill for oil and get off of foreign oil. This is just a big game to the Dems.
These people don’t care about Americans just about getting elected. This lack of action will doom our country.
We are so vulnerable as a country and if Iran makes good on its promise to do a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz we’re SCREWED.
And the reaction of the Dems? More nonsense about how drilling won’t solve anything.
UN.FREAKING.BELIEVABLE.
I thought I had posted this here but apparently not…
My Senator, Bob Corker, is one of these capitulators.
How do I get him to stop this madness?
Living in Hawaii, my Senators and
Representatives NEVER vote in a way
that I’d approve of… and I’m sure all
their votes on this No-Drilling follow
in the same vein!
When I write them and Object… they
writed me back with Smoke and Mirrors,
Never Responding to my Objections…
Frustratedly…
karl and the girls
Hey, powerpro Corker is my Senator also. GO VOLS!
Ace has a post on this here.
Here is Corker’s digits:
Sen. Bob Corker (TN) — 202-224-3344 — 423-756-2757
Here is my response to the news in an earlier thread here:
As you can tell, I was less than thrilled.
On behalf of all Californians I apologize. All I can ask is that everyone vote for rep congress, so that we can take back the house and get a new speaker.
One more thing: what about refineries? Would this poor excuse of a bill address our refining capacity?
Doesn’t it just give you guys a thrill to know that these dimwits voted in another tax increase for us overburdened consumers who are already dealing with other inflationary costs? This is just ridiculous. First the bailout and this crap.
I want liberals to explain to me how this bill benfits hard-working Americans IN ANY WAY. I’m tired of this crap.
Here’s something from The Corner @ NRO.
Spread the word, and let’s kill this nonsense!
Energy Gangsterism [Iain Murray]
Note the bold line about Alaska. Our Powerful Pipeline Princess Sarah isn’t going to like that. Not. One. Bit.
The Democrats are sitting ducks on this energy issue. WE HAVE %70 OF THE PEOPLE ON OUR SIDE HERE! WHY THE HELL SHOULD ANYONE COMPROMISE WITH THE LOSERS, AGAINST %70 OF AMERICA!
DAMMIT CRAPWEASEL RINOS, WAKE UP!
That’s the plan. I’m an absentee voter in NY so I’m not sure how far my vote will go. With senators like Chucky Schmucky (thank you Mark Levin) and Shrillary it’s hard to believe that there’s any hope for my home state.
Then again, you’ve got Feinstein and Boxer so I feel your pain too.
Hugs… and keep the faith.
The Dems are so deranged that they want the country to be destroyed just because they believe that George Bush wants to protect it. It’s the old “cut of nose to spite face” syndrome.
Don’t waste your time on the Dem bill, start applying pressure on the Gang of Twenty or we’re going to get sold out again. This is an Amnesty-level sellout, and we can’t let it happen.
I don’t even have to look to know it doesn’t help with refining.
Who is it that always ties up refinery construction or expansion in a tangle of endless lawsuits? Environmental lobbyists and lawyers.
What political party do you suppose they are in bed with?
You get one guess.
Also, how is cheaper gas going to make you save the planet against your will by trading in your Chevy Tahoes for those stupid little chicklets with wheels that couldn’t out-tow a lawn tractor?
Mark Levin is awesome. I am listening to tonight’s program on my WMP right now.
He’s going to interview the attorney representing Republicans in the Alaska legislature who are suing over the Tasergate attempt to ruin Sarah Palin. You can’t have a better defender than him.
Go get ‘em, Great One!

Brian,
I’m right there with you, my friend. Thank God for Mark. May God bless us with many more in his mold…
I think Mark Levin is uniquely talented at ripping liberalism apart.
He’s been great on the Democrats and Fannie-Freddie the last couple of days, too.
One name for you: JAMIE GORELICK
Remember her?
I <3 Mark Levin.
I wonder what his name for Corker would be…I haven’t heard him mention him by name but I bet it’d be FUNNY.
Whoops…I forgot to give props where due:
Thanks Brian! Go Vols and Titans!!!
Bob Porker Corker, maybe?

She was the one supposedly responsible for the “wall” between the FBI and CIA. I think…
Yes that’s her. Well, after that she went to one of the Fannie-Freddies for a few years and walked away with $25 million in bonuses based on fraudulent bookeeping to trigger those bonuses.
Should be in jail.
That’s right Pelosi, a hoax drilling bill just when an Alaskan (read drilling) Governor is running against your party and the public is in favor of drilling. Further proof the Dems have donned the Cloak of Stupidity.
Wow. That lawyer in Alaska is going to nuke Tasergate. They’ve got nothing on Sarah. Her enemies at home have linked up with the Obamatrons who have parachuted in there since she got nominated, and they are sloppily flailing around with this, without regard to the Alaska Constitution. As Mark Levin said, this is a Stalinist railroad job, by the usual Stalinist characters.
The DNC cannot fool anyone now. They made themselves perfectly clear in Denver for the whole nation to see, “we can’t drill our way out of this… we use 25% of the world’s oil” bla bla bla.
Beat this thing, then run their own words down their throats. This is our issue, they didn’t lead, we will.
700 billion dollars leaving this country every year for foreign oil and they’re playing GOTCHA.
TRAITORS
Hell yes – I question their patriotism!
You know, McCain has a woody to be part of the gang of 20.
It wouldn’t be prudent.
Nancy just just jumped into the waters of American energy policy with a chum suit on. I think there might be a barracuda stalking her, quietly, just out of sight.
Man, I would hate to be Nancy.
They don’t love this country.
They don’t love our constitution.
They actively work at destroying this country
TRAITORS
For seventy years the world has fought wars over oil. Now our enemy is with in us.
TRAITORS
If your in California work with this group.

Another one of those useless gestures to be used before election day, to convince people who don’t know what’s going on, that they are doing something. Personally, I think it’s an insult to intelligent Americans. I despise politicians that put themselves first over the country and its citizens.
So there’s more drilling going on in Barney Frank’s Dupont Circle brothel than happens more than 50 miles offshore? Yeccch.
Well, I think the term “traitors” being thrown around here is pretty $^@*(* appropriate. We have the resources!!! They are purposefully cutting us off from them! Why!
I’ve already sent my email to Elizabeth Dole, my Senator (who has been an enormous disappointment), that is in the Gang of 20.
David Price is my congressman so there is no point writing to him.
I searched the bill for the word “drill,” and it came up eight times (including six times in “SEC. 124. RESOURCE ESTIMATES AND LEASING PROGRAM MANAGEMENT INDICATORS,” where the Secretary of the Interior gives Congress annual reports regarding the status of Federal oil and gas leases, permits, and existing wells). As a famous man once said, “Well, lah dee frickin’ dah!”
There’s more to the bill than just that, of course. The word “green” appears 71 times (albeit, one was a reference to Gene Green of Texas). We can hope that maybe it will get some good chuckles on its way out to the Senate recycling bin.
The ‘Rats want to continue their grand experiment in shoving biofuels and alternative-energy technologies down our gullets (and into our wallets) without a proven, economically or socially successful methodology. Throw a bunch of monetary and environmental green at the problem and see what sticks. The bill is essentially adding a 5-gallon bucket of water to a teaspoon of oil, for lack of a better analogy. Compromise, my tuchus.
One more thing….
Remember that Pelosi invested 100K in T.Boone Pickens Clean Energy Corp (that is in the wind wnergy biz).
So follow the money…. here’s 2 key points from the Dem’s phoney bill:
— Provide tax credits for wind and solar energy industries, the development of cellulose ethanol and other biofuels.
— Require utilities nationwide to generate 15 percent of their electricity from solar, wind or other alternative energy source.
So T. Boone’s company will get tax credits AND Utility Companies have to buy them…nice..
To parapharase the now oft repeated question made by Barack Obama – Do they think we’re stupid?
At least my representative voted against this gutless bill.
The Democrat’s first and foremost priortiy is re-election at any cost. Even if it means losing a war; increasing our energy dependence on countries who are our enemies in the war on terrorism; and having the economy tank. That’s how they generate votes.
Cut and Run should be their campaign slogan.
They have been pushing solar and wind and all the other stuff for over 20 years and it is still too expensive and not feasible as a full replacement to the currently used energy producing methods …
As an example of the non-feasibility of this … read this excerpt from the monthly newsletter of one of the electric companies in Phoenix … note that the proposed grid will take up 18000 square feet (almost 1/2 an acre which is bigger than most home lots in cities) … and will provide next to nothing (1/4) of the power requirements for the entrance area of the arena where it will be used …
From APS newsletter …
Planet Orange Going Green: Suns, APS Team Up on Solar Power Project
Planet Orange is going green thanks to a powerful partnership between APS, the Phoenix Suns and the City of Phoenix. A recent press conference announced plans to install a major solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the fifth level of the US Airways Center parking garage in 2009.
Plans call for a 1,125-panel, 194-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system, which will generate enough electricity to power a quarter of the arena’s Casino Arizona Pavilion, the 50-foot high glass enclosed grand entrance on the northwest corner of US Airways Center. The system will cover approximately 18,000 square feet and will produce 331,233 kilowatt-hours each year.
I sign of intelligence. Maybe there is hope for them.
Seriously, start calling your senators and tell them not to let this bill pass as-is.
I must have missed Fuehrer Nancy’s hearings, anybody have a link to when they were?
Pretend energy bill, pretend democracy, pretend ethics, pretend she works for the American people — All Nancy seems to do is pretend.
I’ve seen the T. Boone commercial, the one where he goes, “Gimme alla yer money — yeehaw!” while dancing around, slapping his cowboy hat on his rump.
OK, not exactly, but that’s how it looked to me.
So glad to see my congressman voting against the hoax. It’s time to get serious with this problem and do it right.
I hope the patriotic US citizens throw out these social-democrats this November. Sellouts. Delusional and anit-American communists.
I’m livid. I’ve contacted five of the sell-outs already. I’ll deal with the rest of them later. After I cool off and calm down.
This is what I mean by appeasement! We sit idle on so much God-given natural resource and do nothing NOTHING! to stick the OPEC and the jihadis in the eye. Representative government! Representing anybody EVERYBODY! except the American people. Disgusting.
Absolute sham of a bill. Yet the party of pelosi will blame the republicans and forget to tell the us that this bill is designe to wean us off oil.
You trolls on this site, I pray you wake up and realize how wrong the dims are about virtually everything!
My 15 year old daughter pegged this exactly – after hearing the details of the bill, she said “It’s a DINO … Drilling in name only.” Goes well with the RINOs who helped pass this.
So President Bush will veto it and we will be back where we started. What worries me is…would McCain veto it if he were President? He has my vote, but sadly, I still don’t trust him. He is too much into appeasing the other side for my taste. What he calls compromise I call giving in to the other side, big time!
Rhan,
I feel your pain- we share the same representatives in Congress. Liddy Dole is also 100% on board with the global warming loons.
At least she finally did the right thing on immigration.
I’m sorry the Democrats passed a sham bill, but I’m glad they didn’t promote offshore drilling. I’m happy to make you take the bus to keep my beach derrick free. Trade in that old pickup for a cute European Vespa scooter. Now there’s a babe magnet.
ps. I take the bus already, it’s only you I want to annoy.
Could the Democrats come up with a more BS name than they did?
Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act
If irony were the point of that bill’s title, they hit the nail on the head.
I have some solace in the fact that my Dem Rep voted against it. Though it remains to be seen why.
I guess the democrats think it is just fine to send billions of dollars over to people who hate us and want us dead. Personally, I would like us to drill, drill, drill. As would 70% of the American people. That is part of the reason we will win big in this election…the Presidency AND Congress. It becomes more clear every day.
Glad you’re all for continuing to buy oil from people who want to kill us. What beach on the Caspian Sea was that again Vlad?
It really is all ’bout you, isn’t it LGM?
These CLOWNS in charge of Washington are a JOKE…I would laugh if it were not so sad… This SHAM should not pass, and if it does it MUST be VETOED… They do not get it, just like IMMIGRATION, they do not get DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW… Not in someplace with no OIL, but someplace with OIL… GOT THAT???
Me too. I’m very glad they did this. Why? They’ll pay for it come November.
The President has threatened a veto. We can only hope he is true to his word.
unfortunately Davis just got voted out to another Republican
I want those rigs placed off the California coast right where Babs can see them from her bedroom window!
Ah November. I didn’t think it was possible to do less than nothing, but the Dems make the Republicans look great by comparison.
I am sick and tired of being in one of the states that is carrying the rest of the counrty’s unquenchable thirst for oil. The Left’s quivering about the environment is just blatantly false. New systems, drilling methods and processes are keeping it clean.
Just look at the Gulf of Mexico over the last few weeks. It just went through two of the largest hurricanes on record in Gustav and Ike and not a drop was spilled.
Dril now… Drill everywhere… Remove us from the bloodthirsty clutches of the Middle East zealots.
Brian72 I lived in Knoxville when the bloodbath that was the 2006 election took place and voted for Mr. Corker. I am highly disturbed by his willingness to compromise with the Dems. I sent him a letter telling him my sentiments. He sent me back a very long letter telling me how he REALLY is a conservative. Right.
I now reside back in the Great State of Texas and am saddled with a 26 year dem-o-crap house member that votes in lock step w/Pelosi. He never responds to my e-mails and the local paper won’t print anything negative about him. I am working hard to get him un-employed this year.
America is a great country. If our representatives stop representing us, we can get rid of them.
I hope McCain doesn’t follow through and work with the Democrats, because any effort to do so will only prop up their own insanity at our expense.
I lived in Santa Barbara for years and the oil rigs way out at sea were actually pretty with their lights twinkling at night. Every once in a while they would vent natural gas and light it on fire and it was like a candle burning …. I actually enjoyed seeing them at night, and during the day they were really not even visible.
Then I woke up and realized that a RINO is not going to act like a conservative with only three months left in office.
We are so screwed…
In looking at my Reps web page, I see a linked spreadsheet describing how we supposedly have 2% of the world’s “proved” oil reserves, yet we use 25% of the produced oil.
Here’s the link…
What I’d like help with is demonstrating that this is a farce.
You’ll see that since 1980. the number for the US has actually gone DOWN according to this report. Yet Canada and other nations have increased dramatically as of 2003.
The report says we have 20.972 billion barrels of reserve.
My understanding is that 18 billion barrels are known to be off limits today.
And this does not take into account the trillions of cubic feet of natural gas.
My belief, and I need some facts to back it up, is that these numbers are old, outdated and just wrong. Isn’t it that case that the Dept of Energy still uses ancient maps to determine what our reserves are?
Who else has useful info on this? Thanks.
