Warning: Do not send your kids to Connecticut College…

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 16, 2008 05:17 AM

…or they could end up writing and thinking like this.

Cliff Notes’ version of Connecticut College history department chair Catherine McNicol Stock’s supremely silly op-ed:

Sarah Palin is from the Pacific Northwest.

White supremacists live in the Pacific Northwest.

Connect the dots!

Read the whole piece and then check out the professor’s official bio. She’s got three degrees from Yale.

Egad. Cross that one off the list, too.

Good morning, Michelle! The MSM just doesn’t quit. They are so worried that Palin threatens their dream of a socialist state (that, by the way, controls the press), that they keep coming up with all sorts of stories. They don’t need to prove anything; they just have to drop the “idea” and let it run.

New London, Ct. where Conn College is located, is an awful dump of a city. It is in eastern Connecticut, far from the tony suburbs of Fairfield County. My guess is that the professor never leaves the college campus, which is located on a hill isolated from the city of New London. It is located on a hill on a highway on the outskirts of New London. The students and faculty never interact with the community, other than to go to the local train station to get out of town. The local residents of New London are largely Black and Hispanic and you virtually never see an African-American or Hispanic face on the Conn College campus. That is probably why Professor McCarthy is so happy on this isolated patch of ground, where she need not be inconveniencied by having a Hispanic or African-American sit near hear as she enjoys her latte from the faculty dining room. If there is ever a more all-white campus than Conn College, I have not seen or heard of it.

Following on GoldwaterKnight’s comment re: Alaska with respect to the defintion of the ‘Pacific NW’…

With much due respect to the folks in Alaska (I have or had relatives there)… the locals here that I know, probably wouldn’t include Alaska if asked to list the states that comprise the ‘Pacific NW’.

In my own informal interactions with friends and family on this subject in the past, about 40% of the time responses would include OR and WA. About 50% of the time the list would be: OR, WA and ID. And, maybe about 10% would include OR, WA, ID and AK.

Also, for someone supposedly so scholarly-inclined as to rural discontent and terrorism, well, the McProfessor curiously overlooked this minor little incident in our past:

    http://americanhistory.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_rajneesh_colony_grows

(The story of the Rajneeshis – a ‘religious’ colony founded in RURAL Oregon, by a transplanted [emigrated] Indian. One of his ‘followers’ [which included many hundreds or thousands of locals] undertook the first successful bio-terror attack in the US).

Does the above example fit nicely the model of presumed ‘Rural White Terrorism’? I think not.

    Professor Stock,

It is rather unfortunate that someone as seemingly educated as yourself would write such a ridiculous piece in regards to Sarah Palin and the area of the nation from which she hails. I do realize that sometimes a newspaper like the Philadelphia Enquirer may contact a writer at short notice and ask for an article to fill space. This short notice may have caused you to ‘pull something out of the air’ to smear Palin, and you are not alone in the media or academia. Many of your colleagues have recently stooped far below decency to attack this woman, and it is obvious that you are too.

Addressing the heart of your article; the sheer infancy of your argument is laughable at best. Since Sarah Palin is a polar bear then Barack Obama must be Al Capone. Or maybe he is a Vicelord and she is an Inuit. It is acceptable for you to dislike Sarah Palin and you should by all means voice your opinion, but to disqualify someone based on where they are from is quite a stretch.

I am currently attending a university and must constantly tell my friends and acquaintances about the two kinds of professors they will encounter; those who will tell you how to think and those that will teach you what to think. You, madam, are obviously in league with the latter.

The aims of Duke University are to assert a faith in the eternal union of knowledge and religion set forth in the teachings and character of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; to advance learning in all lines of truth; to defend scholarship against all false notions and ideals; to develop a Christian love of freedom and truth; to promote a sincere spirit of tolerance; to discourage all partisan and sectarian strife; and to render the largest permanent service to the individual, the state, the nation, and the church. Unto these ends shall the affairs of this University always be administered.

Wow. If that is what passes for “critical thinking” at Connecticut College, they are in deep trouble.

Her reasoning is basically, that if you choose to live in the Pacific Northwest, you must have radical tendencies (whatever radical is by her definition. Conservative, perhaps?).

I wonder if the rest of her “research” is as well thought through. History majors are really a type of voyeur, reading about what others did, and trying to make themselves important by criticizing it from afar, in the manner of an armchair quarterback, as though they could have or would have done it better (with 20/20 hindsight, of course).

How long will it be before she suggests forced relocation of minorities, which she finds underrepresented, in Idaho for example. I suppose it never entered her skull full of liberal mush that many minority groups simply choose not to live there. I would hazard a guess that there are very few resident minorities in the gated Connecticut community in which she lives.

She might also consider the radical liberals and hoards of illegal aliens that occupy the Pacific southwest.

That probably doesn’t fit her worldview.

Connecticut College is located in my home town. New London was founded in 1646 by John Winthrop the Younger, was site of some the earliest newspapers in colonial New England, is home of the US Coast Guard Academy, and was the boyhood home of playwright Eugene O’Neill. I reject (#25) Marc’s rude and careless characterization of New London as a “an awful dump of a city”.

That said, I sent the esteemed Conn College professor this email yesterday:

[Unabomber] Theodore Kaczynski’s digs in Lincoln, Montana are 104 miles closer to Conn College than to Wasilla, Alaska (2,373 vs. 2,477).

Randy Weaver’s place in Ruby Ridge, Idaho is 455 miles closer to New London than to Wasilla, Alaska (2,282 vs. 2,737).

Ever consider that you and Governor Palin might actually have these blackguards surrounded?

Given the college’s relative proximity to these radical hotspots, surely you’ve been counseling your tender wards to check under their dormitory beds at night for angry white male supremacists, haven’t you?

Congratulations, Professor Laughingstock. Who knew an advanced degree could land you the spot at village idiot.

It’s called inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning, sometimes called inductive logic, is the process of reasoning in which the premises of an argument are believed to support the conclusion but do not entail it; i.e. they do not ensure its truth.

Listen… I have met a ton of people from Harvard and Yale. Some are bright; some are just good at taking tests; some are just down right stupid. I learned long ago that liberal professors give good grades to liberal students and bad grades to conservative or even moderate students. Example: I had a journalism teacher in high school that gave me an A in the first half of the year, but once she found out that I was a republican, she gave me a C. I had a economics professor that was a communist. Despite making A’s and B’s in all my other economics classes, he gave me a C. Go figure. I law school, chock full of liberals, I had good grades until they found out I was a member of the college republicans. Hmmm… liberal facists.
