Nancy Pelosi: Ignorant about natural gas

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 17, 2008 12:23 PM

Nancy Pelosi’s mouth emits a lot of natural gas, but she has no idea about how the other kind is produced.

Conn Carroll at Heritage teaches her a lesson:

The day before the Democratic National Convention Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) went on Meet the Press and told Tom Brokaw:

I’m, I’m, I’m investing in something I believe in. I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels. … These investments in wind, in solar and biofuels and focus on natural gas, these are the real alternatives.

As we pointed out at the time, natural gas is not an alternative to fossil fuels … it is a fossil fuel. And as the “Energy Kids Page” of the Energy Information Administration (EIA) explains, it is a fossil fuel that needs to be drilled for.

One would hope that Pelosi had studied up on the issue since then, but her comments after the House passed a bill codifying the ban on most of the Outer Continental Shelf shows she still does not. Pelosi told The Washington Post: “We’re not trying to give incentives to drill, we’re giving incentives to invest in renewables and natural gas that will take us where we need to go.”

Again, where does Pelosi think natural gas comes from? If the government is “giving incentives” to natural gas, it is giving incentives to drill. That is how we get natural gas.

Drill, baby, drill that into your head before you embarrass yourself again.

People please…. you have to understand the science.

Wind is a natural fuel that we have been unable to properly utilize until now. They are opening the ability to drill 100 miles offshore because THAT IS WHERE THE WIND IS STORED.

The wind has been trapped under the seabed for the last 40,000 years after the oceans rose suddenly – trapping the wind. This coincided with man killing off all of the sabertooth tigers, giving him excessive spare time to create expressionist paintings in various European caves while laying bare Easter Island.

Thank goodness Pelosi understands the criticality and value of our stored wind resources. I only wish I had the capibility to drill for wind in my OWN backyard.

    Energy Gangsterism [Iain Murray]

The House is about to start debating its version of the aptly-named “Gang of Ten Sixteen Twenty’s” purported compromise Energy Bill. Anyone who believes this is a pro-drilling bill is fooling themselves. It allows a tiny amount of drilling while pushing forward all the fever dreams of the anti-energy environmentalist movement. I urge everyone to read Marlo Lewis’ post on this from Planet Gore yesterday. Note in particular that the bill will:

    *
Permanently ban access to about 97 percent of the undersea oil lying within 50 miles of the California coast.
    *
Continue the ban on energy production in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.
    *
Impose a brand-new ban on oil and gas leases in Alaska’s coastal waters out to 50 miles.
    *
Not allow states that approve new leases beyond 50 miles to share royalties with the federal government, thus stripping any financial incentive for states to stand up to environmental pressure groups, who will continue to agitate against any new oil and gas operations offshore.

This is not a compromise. It is a sell-out to the anti-energy gangsters.

Note the bold line about Alaska. Our radiantly lovely Sarah’cuda isn’t going to like that. Not. One. Bit.

The Democrats are sitting ducks on this energy issue. WE HAVE %70 OF THE PEOPLE ON OUR SIDE HERE! WHY THE HELL SHOULD ANYONE COMPROMISE WITH THE LOSERS, AGAINST %70 OF AMERICA!

I’m looking for investors interested in “green” power. I’m proposing a multi-phase energy recovery program based in Washington, D.C. Initially, we need to build a natural gas (Methane is natural.) pipeline to the Capitol Building and the Congressional Office Buildings to recover the gas generated there. Concomitant with that, we will retrofit a heat recovery system to the ventilation system to save the thermal energy from the hot air that is produced there. The expansion of the system will include the homes and local offices of Congresscritters and Senators and may include mobile recovery systems that can follow them on the campaign trail. Normally mobile recovery systems would be too expensive, but considering the amount of methane and hot air generated on the campaign trail, I believe it to be cost effective.

If you’re interested, please let me know soon.

Our basic plan of operation is to advance and to keep on advancing regardless of whether we have to go over, under, or through the enemy. We are going to go through him like crap through a goose; like sh*t through a tin horn!”

    That’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Take the fight to the enemy, on his ground! Grease your war machines with his guts! Kick his sorry butt everywhere, all the time!

We will fight on the trail! We will fight on the Hill! We will never surrender!

    Now let’s go!!!

Nancy Pelosi is completely insane. Nothing she says is ever true or accurate or scientific. She knows only corruption, cheating, lying, and theft. She thinks she runs the Catholic Church. She believes BO is de Massah I. How did the democrats sink so low as to have her as speaker? Because almost all democrats are just like her except that they aren’t multimillionaires. The Democrats are the greatest threat to this nation we have faced since we faced them during the civil war. They tried to destroy the Nation in 1861, and are trying again now. Only this time, we are the ones who are armed, who lead the military, and are not self destructive. War is upon us, it does no one any good to deny it. At least prepare, network with loyal Americans and stand firm

This is an amazing post with which I fully agree. The left IS a major threat in so many ways. Unfortunately, not many people are fully cognizant of the magnitude of the threat. Hence, we do nothing.

    Gang of 10/16/20 breaking up?
posted at 2:30 pm on September 17, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
    Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

After the House passed the energy bill that doesn’t actually allow oil companies to drill where the oil is, one might expect the so-called Gang of 10-20 in the Senate to quickly pass the Nancy Pelosi-approved bill. Comments coming from a few of the Gang-sters appear to indicate that drilling bells are breaking up that ol’ gang of theirs. The energy bill fight may not yet be over.

As they reversed their long-held opposition to more offshore oil exploration, Democrats said the increased taxes on oil companies in the bill and the collection of royalty payments from the drilling would yield billions of dollars to help finance the development of cleaner, renewable energy sources.

We’re not trying to give incentives to drill, we’re giving incentives to invest in renewables and natural gas that will take us where we need to go,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) told reporters before the vote.

Pelosi offers as honest a statement as we’ve yet heard from her on this topic. Democrats won’t stay that honest for very long, though. They passed this bill as a fig leaf for the upcoming elections, attempting to reverse a large shift against them in the election after Pelosi adjourned Congress to go on a book tour rather than address the supply crisis in the oil markets. Pelosi and her cohorts will talk endlessly about drilling without ever noting that they won’t allow the drilling to occur where oil actually exists.

Republicans have to continue their offensive on energy policy. The Senate Republican Caucus has to stay tough and ensure passage of a bill that will allow drilling where oil exists, and also to push for development of shale. The latter may soon become economically a wash, thanks to the dropping price of oil, which ended at less than $92 a barrel yesterday, but we need to start working these formations now to ensure future supplies.

Let your Senators know that you want real increases in domestic supply, not false-front legislation designed only to rescue Democrats from their own political failures.

These Senators had better be listening to their people, and looking closely at the polling data on this energy debacle the Democrats have given us.

This is our energy D-Day. Do we have the guts to take the beach and push through for a breakout?

Not to mention that natural gas is not a good choice for auto fuel. The best thing you could do with it if you want to use if for auto fuel is to make methanol with it, but since we have very few flex-fuel vehicles that can run on methanol, there’s no market for it.

Actually…CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is a very good motor fuel for vehicles. It burns cleaner than gasoline but does have a lower “stored energy per unit volume” rate than gasoline.
CNG is attractive to fleet operators however (think city governments for police & city services). They can set up their own centrally located fueling station and fill up their tanks. The cost of CNG is about 75% that of gasoline. It ain’t that bad a deal really. Now why anyone would want methanol? It is used to make MTBE…a fuel additive that is carcinogenic and has been foisted upon us by the EPA, TreeHuggers-R-Us and the ilk of Clueless Nancy and her cohorts in the name of “saving the planet”. There was a fuel spill due to a truck wreck near one of Dallas’ drinking water supply lakes. It took millions of $$ and thousands of man-hours to contain the MTBE laden gasoline once it hit the ground and was running downhill towards the lake. Gasoline would simply float on the water and could be contained with booms. MTBE, since it is methanol based, fall out of the gasoline and goes into solution in the water…and then the fit hits the shan (Thanks Michelle, I usually said “then the defecant hits the rotary, oscillatory air moving device”)

Let’s not forget what Pelosi is involved with. She is invested in CLNE, part of a triple play involving natural gas, a giant wind farm, and a water grab by T Boone Pickens.

I updated my information from the original article by digging deeper into the water grab in Texas and by detailing how Nancy Pelosi LIED to the media about her investments.

Pelosi is not trying to save the planet, she is protecting her investments in CLNE. If she was SERIOUS about saving the planet, as she says she is, she would be exposing the great water grab and not investing in a company that is indirectly connected with it.

I also want to say that T Boone Pickens is not the problem here, although the water grab thing is something he needs to address. The real issue is the hypocrisy and the conflict of interest of Nancy Pelosi.

I wouldn’t want to quibble with an engineer, but I’ve seen it argued elsewhere that one of the big problems with CNG is storage. The tank is pretty big and heavy and you can’t carry enough for long trips.

And a valid point that is. That’s why I said that it is best for fleet operations like city vehicles.
The City of Mesquite has been CNG powered for a number of years.

CNG…by yielding only about 1/3 the “bang per unit volume of gasoline” can’t really be a long drive solution.

Ethanol has the same problem. Not nearly so much bang per gallon…and worse mileage too.

Gasoline is truly amazing in the amount of stored energy that it contains.
