I agree that is a valid concern but I have a way around it; here are my rules:

1. A list of, say, 20 true/false questions is written by each candidate to be asked of the opposing candidate. (Sealed in a mayonnaise jar left on Funk and Wagner’s door step, etc.)

2. Each candidate is given one hour in advance to review the questions that they are going to be asked.

3. Either candidate has the option, in advance, to decline to answer any or all of the questions HOWEVER .. the questions that they so decline will be revealed after the completion of the lie detector show down.

4. A coin toss determines which candidate gets to decide who is to ask the first question, (like football), and that candidate asks their question of the other while the other answers it with the lie detector monitoring them. They alternate taking turns from there.

5. Without mentioning the nature of them and just before the questioning begins, the number of questions each candidate has elected to not answer is revealed. To equalize the number of questions, for whichever candidate has declined the fewer questions, (if any), that candidate gets to decide that number of the other’s questions they wish to decline just before the start of questioning. And THOSE questions are NOT revealed.

What’s left is how to make certain each candidate is truly hooked up to the machine when they are answering. etc. which I suppose is territory for finding a neutral expert party or parties to administer the machinery; certainly not anyone from MSM…

Of course the above could all be done without lie detectors too.
