Finally: McCain jabs Obama in the Fannie; Palin pokes Biden on patriotism

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 18, 2008 12:55 PM

Took ‘em long enough.

Maybe McCain will rethink his praise of Obama’s community organizer record while he’s at it. Sigh.

Hotline reports:

John McCain today in Cedar Rapids, IA, said Barack Obama has done nothing to help the nation avert fiscal crisis:

“Senator Obama talks a tough game on the financial markets but the facts tell a different story. He took more money from Fannie and Freddie than any Senator but the Democratic chairman of the committee that regulates them. He put Fannie Mae’s CEO who helped create this disaster in charge of finding his Vice President. Fannie’s former General Counsel is a senior advisor to his campaign. Whose side do you think he is on? When I pushed legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Senator Obama was silent. He didn’t lift a hand to avert this crisis.”

More:

While the leaders of Fannie and Freddie were lining the pockets of his campaign, they were sowing the seeds of the financial crisis we see today and enriching themselves with millions of dollars in payments. That’s not change, that’s what’s broken in Washington.

Sarah Palin also took a good poke at Joe Biden’s higher taxes=patriotism remarks:

“To the rest of America that’s not patriotism. Raising taxes is about killing jobs and hurting small businesses and making things worse.”

***

Not so good: McCain saying he would fire conservative stalwart Chris Cox, head of the SEC. Quin Hilyer:

Now McCain wants to fire Chris Cox from the SEC specifically because Cox supposedly “allowed naked short-selling.” This is just the latest in a string of utterly panicky statements this week in which McCain has shown that he doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about. The truth is, Cox actually did move to ban naked short-selling, and withstood harsh (but wrongheaded) criticism from almost all quarters when he did so. His staff was working on regs — which takes some time — to make the ban permanent. He has been pushing since the first time I ever met him, in 1993, to curb outlandish short-selling. He was probably the single most avid person in all of Congress AGAINST aggressive short selling, and has tried ever since he got to the SEC to curb it. Blaming him for naked short selling is like blaming McCain for losing Vietnam…..

The Democrat Party believes it is “patriotic” to raise taxes, trash talk and belittle the sitting President, and demean the United States at every turn. These are not patriotic actions, they are anti-American, and anti-freedom.

Regarding taxation…there is nothing in the U.S. Tax Code that precludes any of the “rich, patriotic” liberals in this country from voluntarily paying more taxes than the tax code says they owe.

All these “fair share” proponents, who are in the “wealthy” class of Americans, go out of their way to shelter income. They create family trusts in offshore banks, and help create loopholes that facilitate the hiding of taxable income. Take a look at the Kennedy and Rockefeller families for example.

It is curious to me that they bend over backwards to accumulate deductions to claim on their returns, but in many cases, few if any of the deductions are to charities outside their political or personal families. A simple contrast of the charities the McCain’s support, and versus the austere giving the Obama and Biden families exhibit speaks volumes.

I wish someone would challenge the Democrats on this issue. If they don’t think the “rich” pay enough, then why are they, themselves, claiming itemized deductions on their tax returns?

That, in my opinion, is one of the major reasons the tech stock tumbled during that period. I remember it well. Although widely diversified, our retirement account lost over 40% of it’s value. It’s happening again.

Why is it, when the modern markets fail, there always seems to be Democrats leading one of the houses of congress? The only ones that ever seem to make a profit during these periods, are the same Democrats, their cronies, and their friends.

    I will not shut up.

John, are you surprised that Michelle hasn’t posted anything about the two commercials McCain has released saying he’s a bigger supporter of amnesty than Obama? Or his interview with Univision that virtually guarantees amnesty within the first 30 days of his administration?

I guess you will not be voting. Senate Bill S900 praised and signed by President Clinton on November 13, 1999 got the ball rolling on this mess. Proposed by Republican Phil Graham, It passed 90-8 in the senate and 362-57 in the House.

McCain has it right. Who is to blame? (D) – all of the above.

The issue is fixing it. Obama’s laying the blame at one doorstep is childishly simplistic, political, and self-serving. If you look at any disaster you will find it caused by a series of related events. If any of the events fails to occur the disaster is averted. This looks like one of those.

We can rant politically or fix the problem. I think some adult leadership and participation is required here.

Bingo! The McCain campaign as well as all of the other Congressional seats is where you should be posting. They need to know EXACTLY how you feel. These slimy Neroes all slid out with millions in cash while the citizen’s mortgage store burned down. Moreover, Dubya attempted to pass reform legislation in 2003, which they BLOCKED at every turn, McCain is quoted in the Congressional Record in 2005 prognosticating the very outcome we are all living through presently. The Glass-Steagall Act amendment here was the issue. Giving the Federal Reserve more power is what creates the disaster. Interestedly enough, Phil Gramm is one of McCain’s top economic advisers (remember the ‘mental’ recession?), and McCain himself voted Aye on the roll call for Senate Bill S900, and was not present on the actual Senate vote.

We should be talking about the moral hazard of the Federal Reserve, and how a private group of individuals, accountable to no one, has the power to create money, and set the price of money as they see fit.

It’s about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. You are a conservative and I agree with you 100% on most issues, especially illegal immigration. I’m not going into the whole not voting for McCain is voting for Obama thing again, because I know it’s been said enough and I think that in the end, you’ll do the right thing.

As far as ANWR, did you see the interview last night? She’ll have him headed in the right direction on that issue by 1/21/09.

Firing Chris Cox – that’s an easy call, McCain needs to distance himself from the Administration and the SEC hasn’t exactly covered itself in glory. At this point in time there’s no sacred cows, you take the shots you need to take.

I think the direction McCain is taking is exactly the direction he needs to take. We’ve had a regulatory environment that’s permitted these ‘too big to fail’ entities to be run off the rails, and whether we like it or not it’s now in the government’s lap to unwind it.

I don’t like it either. But the only alternative, going forward, is to impose regulations that limit lines of business in such a manner than no entity can ever get too big to fail.

And who do you trust to do something about Fannie and Freddie furthering Democrats’ political interests? In my opinion the only candidate in this race who might ever amount to a small-government leader is Gov Palin, and we’ve got to do whatever it takes to give her a shot at that.

They can afford to, they stole nearly 60 million from Fannie Mae and left the American taxpayer to sweep up after them.”

If you don’t like the topics Michelle provides and think you can do better, start your own blog. You can talk amnesty 24/7. Or open your own diner and serve “spam, spam, amnesty, and spam.” (My apologies to Monty Python.)
