Kill the bailout: Newt Gingrich gets on board
I said it yesterday.
Newt Gingrich said it today.
Hans Bader sums it up succinctly: The Bush/Paulson bailout is “Inflationary, Unnecessary, and Unconstitutional.”
Yes, it’s time for ideological purity.
Kill it.

For now, anyway.

» WaPo's Dana Milbank: 'The Senate Really Has 100 Blanche DuBoises'

This is good. Now that he’s not on a couch holding hands with Nancy Pelosi. Glad to have him back.
Also, Senator DeMint says, “Thanks, but no thanks to the bailout to nowhere!” Thank god South Carolina has one good Senator!
Hell Yes! Defeat it, Kill it, Stomp it into the ground.
Kill the bail out.
Drill the oil reserves.
Fill the on-ramps out of DC (i.e., reduce the size of government).
Please kill it so I can come out of this funk as a result of serious depression.
I called Knollenberg’s (MI-R) office yesterday and they took a message for “someone” to call me back. Still waiting.
…and will devalue the US dollar even further, thereby further exasperating the US cost of oil and gasoline.
Is there any truth that these “toxic” liabilities, that we the taxpayer are now going to take ownership of, can potentially increase in value in the future? Or is this loss an official loss?
700 billion here 1 trillion there, give 850 billion to other countries…where is all this $$$ coming from…jobless rate at almost 6%, lower wages, high prices…you can’t get blood out of stone…we need to bring back that old drug campaign slogan…
JUST SAY NO!!
Well, at least you have one. I have two socialists here in CA. Hopeless and useless.
The banks enjoy “private profit” and request “social READ: PUBLIC FINANCING” Risk Recovery” from their blatantly greedy practices.
STOP THE MERRY-GO-ROUND AND LET ME OFF!
Is anybody listening to Obummer at his “media availability” event right now? He’s explaining, throught his ohhhs and uhhhmmm, how he’ll “solve” the financial crisis. What a buffoon!
A whole lot of nothing is what I got. Very generic spin on how if we’re going to bail out the banks, let’s bail out the homeowners. If we’re going to bail out both… then don’t let that terrible healthcare system drag. Oh, and let’s reform that tax code.
Nothing about solutions…. just a whole bunch of generic promises. He’s even stealing McCain’s “oversight board” idea.
Does this man have any real ideas of his own? Really? Does he?
Paulsen and Bernanke say this is an either/or situation. Either we bail out their cronies on wall street or we face dire consequences. Hah. These people are supposedly smart, they’ll figure something else out. Scare mongering at it’s worst.
Message to Wall Street thieves: The American people don’t want to own your phoney-money worthless pieces of paper.
I was clicking H&C on Fox last night and was just about to change channels when Gretta came on. I saw Gingrich was the guest so I decided to watch for a while.
I throughly enjoyed his perspective on the whole bailout matter.
When Gretta asked if he had 30 seconds to advise the President – what would his advice be?
Gingrich’s answer “Have a second plan”
A country suffering from economic collapse due to the unwavering desire for gratification from the fruits of Capitalism, and a government buyout of large companies and in consequently majority ownership. A great Orator hits the scene. Where have I heard this story before?
Didn’t know Newt was into therapy sessions; doesn’t look the type. Pelosi on the other hand…
What a direct slap in the face to anyone that has acted like a grown-up and held their finances in check, lived within their means, and saved for that rainy day we all know will be there. How many more industries are going to be bailed out and nationalized before this is over? Our educators are afraid to tell children they’ve failed – and now taxpayers are fed the same garbage. Every CEO that contributed to this fiasco should face jail time, just like Enron and Worldcom. At the least, they should have to forfeit their own assets to help pay down the debt on that failure.
Newt had a great interview with Greta last night, here’s the transcript
Bring back the Contract with America!
Hey, Michelle, attention!
Newt was on Greta last night and really went after this deal, in great detail. Maybe you could get the HotAir crew to post the video?
Here it is @ Greta’s page on Fox News.com
More people need to hear what he had to say. It was excellent.
My bad:
GINGRICH: Get a second plan.
Hey, Is it too late to bump McCain off the Ticket and push Newt for President, with Palin as his running mate?
Well, everyone beat me to it.
Still, the video should get around the net for a few days.
I don’t know enough about economics to know if buying up all of this bad mortgage debt is good or bad. I’m leaning towards bad.
What is certain is that I don’t trust Paulson to have total control over $700 billion… for starters.. more $$$$ later no doubt. Then not be accountable for anything he does.
What is also certain is I don’t want to be on the hook to foreign banks for billions more than Paulson already has us signed and committed to.
And finally, the Dems are adding individual mortgage bailouts… under the mindset of… “you bailed out banks… now save irresponsible home buyers”
One thing I haven’t seen is details on what banks are getting bailed out in this plan and how mubank bailout. There are no details on what this guy plans to actually do… beyond a very nebulous statement of buying worthless loans.
Don’t forget their sister, Clueless, the Speaktress of the House.
You gotta love Newt’s savvy. Obama is on board for the bailout with Bush; If McCain opposes the bailout, then Obama = Bush!! That is delicious dish of irony!
I do not agree the government should be bailing out companies. I did not agree with the govt sending us refund checks. I do not agree that the government would be willing to bail out the money men and cut mental health programs so the insane homeless man is sleeping next to a garbage can. Good job. Glad we decided to help the right people. The bourgeoisie attitude goes all the way to the US Capitol.
Here’s another concern…if this bailout goes through, the federal government will essentially hold about half of the mortgages in the country, right? What if Obama (the Silencer) becomes President? Michelle has repeatedly reported on his efforts to silence dissent, so would this federal ownership of homes give him another major weapon to silence his critics…?
Not a pleasant thought.
Really great how Newt ties this economic crisis into our energy crisis.
Paging Sarah’Cuda, to the courtesy phone please.
The other great thing that Newt said last night was that we should push comprehensive energy reform now. He said if we could get 500B into the economy for alternative fuels, that would perhaps get Wall Street humming again. I mean isn’t it odd that 700Billion is equal to the number T Boone Pickens keeps citing?
We need economic stimulus, not buying lemon mortgages.
Drill Here, Drill Now, Drill everywhere, Build Nuclear Power Plants, Wind Farms, Solar Farms, whatever it takes to get us reliant on Americans again.
Yes! Exactly. Sarah’Cuda speech, intro by Newt. Post haste.
Yeah, Newt went wobbly on us for a while with the Global Warming BS, but I hope he’s back for good. I too saw him on Greta last night. He was awesome. Does anyone know what his relationship with McCain is like?
Nothing could be worse than from the Bush-Paulson-Obama plan to pass. It would set an appalling precedent, that will come back to bite us again and again, the total being far worse than 700 billion or whatever the initial bailout was. I’m talking nationalization of the economy and that folks, is not acceptable. Without reforms to stop Senatorial Greed, no bailout plan should even be discussed.
So many opportunities are being place on Senator McCain’s door. Will he accept and run with any of them? Hope springs eternal.
As for Newt, I would accept a Palin-Gingrich ticket but that is it. Too much water has flowed over the dam and under the bridge, or however the saying goes, to fully trust that man ever again.
If this was Japan, Barny Frank would apologize and then commit suicide.
The least he could do is step down.
Fat chance.
I think a law should be passed banning financial companies or their employees from contributing to candidate’s or their respective committes for election.
My sincere condolences. I couldn’t take it anymore in CA. I escaped.
Shepard Smith on FoxNews seems to really be on board today. Its a great show going on at the moment.
Nobody said anything about Newt on a ticket, he’s just one of the most brilliantly effective pundits and/or communicators we have in conservatism today.
You have a point about baggage from the past. He needs to keep doing what he’s doing now, only more of it. He’s very articulate, and very persuasive. Get people to STOP and THINK about this. That’s what he’s great at. Sure made me do a double take after what he had to say last night.
You put Newt and Sarah’Cuda together for a few well publicized speeches on energy, national security, the economy, and how they are intertwined, you’ve got some political dynamite there. That would move the needle, I think.
My 2 cents.
We’ll never get rid of Barney Frank! I live in his district in MA and no one ever even runs against him, not even another dem. Of course, here in MA a Repub couldn’t ever win so it’s hopeless. So sad…
He’s not the Newt Pelosi used to know.
Then stick to it!
Now that would be a sure winner…no reaching across the aisle, just glancing over on occasion.
Newt gave his views about this last night on On The Record with Greta. He couldn’t have made the problem any more clear. Thank God we have him on our side…now if we could just get rid of all the flotsom…
Seems to me that the more I hear of this, I don’t like it. Besides, Congress taking “quick action” is laughable at best. Because the media is pitching this as a “must-have”, they’ll weigh this thing down with so much pork and crap to push their socialist agenda, that it will be so bloated and contain so much that is irrelevant to it’s intention. Otherwise, they’ll keep chirping about a “depression”. Well, what they’ve got is depressing enough!
Finally, I already own one mortgage, thank you – and I’m not interested in owning $700 billion more. Give them to Chris Dodd. He seems to be able to manage it (jacka$$).
I was reading yesterday that they are planning to expand the bailout to cover not just mortgages, but also student loans, car loans, credit card debt…. it never ends. We need to vote EVERYONE out and start from scratch.

You’ve brought to mind the episode of Seinfeld called “Opposites”. George has an epiphany, realizing that all of his previous instincts were wrong. So, he starts doing the opposite of what he thinks he should do (with wild success).
How can Paulson and his cronies rely on their own logic, when they are the ones who threw the proverbial sh** that is hitting the fan?
Yeh, that would be one of those cases of looking around the chamber rooms and thinking “Good, they are still on recess again, we can actually get something done now”

So are we working out the Dream Ticket/Administration?
So far, I have:
Palin
Gingrich
Jindal
MM (Homeland Security)
Kay Bailey Hutchison
———–
and
Me (oh wait! it may be a little pretentious to nominate myself this early)
You forgot Fred Thompson, to manage any and all things Supreme Court related.
I wish more people would have spoken up when the proposal for bailing out the student loan industry was passed. So now the government is buying 10’s of Billions in good student loans that these lenders just didn’t want to keep. Wachovia alone is looking for close to $4 Billion. It is long past time that the government gets out of the loan business all together.
Speaking of Wachovia, they had a pollster call me last night.
Sample of questions:
) Did the teller act like they really wanted your business
) How much do your like Wachovia’s service portfolio
) How likely are you to recommend to your friends
) Will you do business with Wachovia less, more or the same over the next 3 months.
Analysis:
They are worried…… (and that is being generous)

Dream Ticket/Administration
Palin
Gingrich

Kay Bailey Hutchison
If the government is already $400 B in debt for THIS YEAR ALONE, does this bill mean the deficit will be $1.1 Trillion for this fiscal year?
2012: Palin/Gingrich
If you have not seen it, it looks like opposition is slowly gaining traction. From Foxnews.com:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,426505,00.html
Let’s hope it isn’t too late.
I know our pundits in D.C. are trying to make the booboo all better, but why do we have to bail out any private enterprise? Unless it’s national security, I’m not understanding the “Why” of it all. They lost me about Monday morning with their sky is falling rhetoric. If I were back in school I’d fail Capitalism 101 by today’s standards….
Stupid, stupid WarEagle! I have spent the last year paying down debts, pumping up my 401k and dumping money into my personal savings account. I should have been out their trying to find a $1 million house that I couldn’t afford so the government could bail me out! Stupid, stupid, stupid. What was I thinking?
For my $2333 share of the loan, I want an actual address of the place I co-own, so I can go over and mow the lawn and make sure Barney Frank isn’t running a brothel in the basement. You want my money, give me my share of the assets.
In the last decade we have doubled the entire debt we ran up since the founding of the Republic. They and we all are to blame.
As I have mentioned before – the executives of all of these companies can have whatever pay-for-performance and golden parachutes they want.
*As long as their salaries/bonuses stay within the confines of the business.*
Once they come to the American people for help and bailouts, then we should control what they make and we should set the penalties for their failure. ( 9/11, acts of god, etc withstanding)
Years ago, Rush used to talk about how Dems use incrementalism in order to slowly inch the government’s way into our personal business and bill folds. He warned that, by the time people notice that their rights had eroded away, it will be too late because the erosion tactics will have become common practice, having been tollerated and downplayed for years previous (this is, of course, a paraphrase).
Welcome to what happens when you don’t sweat the small stuff. We should have thrown these effing crooks out decades ago; instead, we have corporate welfare and fear rhetoric designed, not to inflame the brain-dead masses, but to encourage them (us) to sit on our hands and allow politicians to fix a problem which they themselves created and are ultimately responsible for. Nice work if you can get it (and if you have no shame).
THROW THESE STINKING BUMS OUT, REGARDLESS OF PARTY!!!!
I voted for Bush twice. I regret it. He has brought us bankruptcy and socialism.
We were told that Bush was the alternative to socialism. They lied to us. I am not accepting this any longer. Clean out the government. Vote 3rd party.
Every darn person creating this financial meltdown should be handed their walking papers NOW.
Then they should be imprisoned.
That includes anyone promoting this crap!
To quote someone I despise “The chickens are coming home to roost.”
Yes Nancy, and Harry You had a job to do and you didn’t do it. You were democrats first and Americans second. Now the fiscal year only has a seven days left. And thats counting Saturday and Sunday. The economy is collapsing, no federal budget is in place and you’re clueless. So if you can’t lead, then follow, or get out of the way. Resign in disgrace.
Oh and President Bush, I’m not against finishing your term with a President Chenny. There is plenty of blame to go around.
And car loans, and credit card debt…whether people are in default or not.
Have a little pity. I hail from the great state of Washington, land of Maria Cant-do-well and Patchouli Murray.
WarEagle #50 – guess we’re all feeling a bit stupid by paying off debts monthly, in spite of rising costs of everything trying to save – something, and then get told we all are on the hook for someone else’s failures and poor decisions. I want my million dollar house too!
Why is this situation different than Ken Lay – didn’t they confiscate his personal property and sell off the assets? I want these people to suffer if they’re going to dump this thing in our laps.

You want my money, give me my share of the assets. At least she turned the lights and cameras out while they were on vacation…that’ll save about $13, so we only need another $699,999,999,987 to clean this mess up.
Newt swings: It’s up there, going, going, going, GONE!!!!! Another homerun for Newt!
I want every penny Jamie Gorelick took out of Fannie Mae ($26 million) taken away and given to widows and orphans of firefighters. And we should sell her house and give her a FEMA trailer.
And ads on TV reminding everyone who Fannie supports in Congress – number two is Obama.
We should take everything Gorelick owns and send her traitorous behind to Pakistan where she can become one of Bin Laden’s servants. It is better than she deserves.
The only problem is we are still $699.974 Billion short of what we need. But it is a good start.
Errah if it takes a complete collapse and meltdown of the US financial system to limit this bloated government’s reckless spending then count me in. It’s unfair, unwarranted, unprescidented, and unconstitional. I’m willing to take the chance. errah!
Errah, Maybe she can “work” off the rest while she’s there! She is a lawyer isn’t she??!!
Amen!
It is “a time to kill” every plan of the Communists…
JP Morgan Chase got a firesale price on Bear Sterns.
People at Chase got a great deal. People at Bear Sterns lost a ton.
Half of our population got stuck with 97% of the debt.
The other half of our population only has to shoulder 3% of the debt and probably don’t care.
That “bailout” was wealth redistribution on a huge scale ($30 Billion).
This “bailout” is wealth redistribution on an absolutely MASSIVE scale ($700 Billion+).
Paulson would get to decide who gets rewarded and who doesn’t. Paulson’s track record shows he is in bed with the Democratic Socialist Communists. He already allowed Lehman to go bankrupt, and he’s practically laughing about it. Paulson would become “KING” of the economy…he would get to decide who gets money (Democrats) and who doesn’t (Republicans) with NO OVERSIGHT. Can you say, “Tyranny”?
Falling for this Trojan Horse “bailout” will not bring relief…
it would only bring pain on an even larger scale.
My Mother-in-Law gets Time magazine, and their current cover says:
The Communists have duped President Bush into promoting their plan to railroad through their plan, and they are already blaming the Republicans, rather than the Democrats who created this mess.
The answer is to kill this bailout and immediately take steps to access all of the oil we have available in this country…more than three times the amount of oil in Saudi Arabia.
We can, and should, turn the USA into an oil exporter, and turn our economy around!
YES!!!
NEWT “GETS IT”!!!
Hey Teddy!!!
ERRAH even that can’t stop a governemnt that is out of control. They will just have us make more bricks without straw.
Kill it.
Kill it here; kill it now.
Paulson would be completely unaccountable with at least $1 Trillion in assets to award to anyone he wants. And he will be in offce less than four months!
Can you imagine how much he could enrich anyone he wants while holding what is essentially a “preemptive pardon?” The guy could put the entire amount in his wife’s savings account and walk away and there is nothing we could do about it.
You have to be insane to support this idea! They created the mess. Why do we think they can fix it? Why do they think we should pay for it?
Why don’t they create a Wall Street self insurance fund and demand every entity involved pony up 15% of their assets to self insure against this lunacy. If their assets were on the line I bet there would be a lot less speculation and stupidity going on.
Seems like a perfect time to quit paying taxes, instill a tax revolt or demand tax reform. I don’t want this bail out.. This piggybank is broke…by the way we already are in a recession. How could the same leaders(sic) who brought this on, demand the bailout…so their golden paras don’t implode. How can we ever trust them again! We keep making the rich richer, and the poor poorer….who’s gonna bail me out…
Yep, just think. If there are approximately 300 million people living in the US, this cash-grab gives each man, woamn and child in this country a tab of just about $2,300. Nice to know for those of us with big families.
What an excellent way to push a mortgage on my GREAT-grandchildren. Morons.
Less government rather than more government is the answer to this problem. The government caused all of this to come to be. Why do we think the same crooks who knowingly brought this about can be trusted to “fix” it? How stupid do they think we are?
Errah, I presume I’ll be first in line for the Reedjumakation Kamp. My hope is that the Demokrats build it so I can readily escape while they argue the need for a fence errah;)
Errah this 700bn+ isn’t for golden parachutes, they already have those. It’s for golden gulfstream IVs, errah.
Why does this make me think of “Hogan’s Heroes”?
Errah I know NOTHING!
Let’s put this in the entitlement crowd’s language!
Imagine sitting on the front step of your double wide… you still
have not recovered from losing your job at the pencil making mill…
the money that you made from saving all of the aluminum beer cans is
gone, all of the copper in a 60 mile radius has been stripped. Your
momma who has been giving you the money she’s been saving for
dentures for the last 4 months is gone… what do you do now? NOW…
Mr Banker is knocking on your door saying that you need to pay him
back for the money you borrowed for the Double wide and the New
Pickup…
Do you blame the Banker for being the bastard??? Do you blame your
Momma for not having more money? Do you blame the beer company for
taking all of your money? Do you blame the pencil company for not
GIVING YOU that JOB you deserve – even though the demand for pencils
is long gone? Do you blame the Double Wide dealer for selling you
the double wide instead of a single wide model or the model with the
indoor plumbing? What about that damn Truck Dealer… bastard
FORCED you to buy the gun rack and the HUGE TIRES and RIMS…
No… you blame yourself for overspending -not living within your
means, you blame everyone else for the situation instead of taking
matters into your own hands… looking for someone else to FIX the
problem for you…
Well, that must be different than other days. Yesterday, in response to a guest calling Bill Clinton “Bubba,” Shemp made some out-ot-left-field crack about “Hor-hay” (the Spanish translation of Boosh). Shemp had his “D” Jersey on yesterday, that’s for sure.
The first time I heard dem talking points come out of his mouth was when “Bush wasn’t doing enough to help the poor people of New Orleans after Katrina.” Funny, he never moaned for the folks of Iowa this past summer. Shemp, I believe, is CNN material.
I see today, that the Chesapeake Bay crab fishery is be added into the mix for $20 million. Gee, have a bad year? No problem. We taxpayers will bail you out. If they keep bailing out people, maybe I can be bailed out when I’m broke, paying taxes. Hmm, don’t think so.
http://www.wvec.com/news/topstories/stories/wvec_local_092303_ches_bay_declaration.a559409e.html
Errah, So after the repo man has hauled the trailer and truck away, the illegals are now replacing amurikan workers at the ole pencil factory and grandma has been institutionalized, your sitting on your tookas in the front yard and realize that the guvernment will get you all the cheeze you can eat, a new house over your head and healthcare along with a sizable monthly check for beer. You remember from civics class that the middle class taxpayers of this country will always be on the hook for whatever you need for the remainder of your life; so you can sit back and relax.
I remember that Sandyb and thought the same thing when listeningt to Shremp.
Errah I have applied for TARP citing a severe grub worm infestation in my yard that I cannot afford to remediate; errah. The peoples republic of Maryland are financial predators and know and there are no bounds or limits to them sticking their hands into the citizenry’s and federal pockets. Every April I feel as if they should at least turn me around and give me a kiss. My wallet is now in counseling. Errah
Sad but this is what is called hitting the nail on the head.
Something just occured to me as I was reading Dodd’s, Shelby’s and others comments.
So.. let’s say we buy all these garbage loans from these banks. That has the effect of making their balance sheets look good again.
So.. the $700 billion question is…
What in the name of $#*$#* will keep them from making MORE bad loans moving forward???
This is starting to sound like paying off some idiots house that he couldn’t afford… only to see him get a new mortgage on it months later and blow through THAT cash the same way he did through before.
Am I missing something here?
What exactly would prevent these banks from digging the same hole we just dug them out of? Because clearly… they didn’t get smarter over night.
Really… what am I missing?
Saw McSame stumping on Cavuto today. He’s singing the same song as the rest of them: We need it now. He also said each taxpayer is on the hook for $10K.
Uh, Juan, no, you don’t need to go along with this. Be a maverick and disagree with Boosh. Then you could really have something to run against Odopey in the debates. Let the markets fail and re-set. Get the pain over with now. People who shouldn’t have received a mortgage before shouldn’t have one now. I’m tired of paying for losers.
And what’s really rich, Chris Dodd resisted doing ANYTHING about Freddie and Fannie AND got a sweetheart deal on his loan. Talk about stones! I wish we lived in Japan! He could take Schumer with him.
BTW, did you know that Hank Paulson is a big donor to Schumer AND The One? Like someone else said — he’s only got four months left. How accountable could he be? Gee, you don’t think he’ll set this up to fail, do you? So his boy Uhbama can come in and
reallycleanitup?Newt, good on you. Finally — someone showed some leadership. Please rally the rest of the braindead Republicans to your side.
Two ideas to strike at the heart of the problem:
Politicians can accept any amount of campaign money from anyone eligible to vote for them, with full and immediate disclosure. The only political parties, PACs, companies, or unions that could contibute would be those with a vote (ie none of them). Congressional elections would be entirely funded in-state and in-district. Congressmen would be more beholden to their constituents and less to everyone else (including the parties).
Then implement apportionment (it is in the consitution, but never tried) so the states can collect taxes the Federales need based on state population. That way, states start thinking “Hey, if we are collecting the taxes, why do we need federal gov’t to give us money for education, roads, etc?” We can just do away with the federal side of things that should be handled at the state and local level.
Of course, it would be just as useful to suggest that we outlaw evil, for all the likelihood these ideas have of seeing fuition.

You’ve got it…
this “bailout” is a massive Socialist/Communist redistribution of wealth, and it won’t fix a thing…it will only lead to more pain and suffering, with a tyrannical Secretary of the Treasury as the “KING” who gets to dole out money to the Socialists of his choice.
Wrong. That makes many wrong assumptions, including the assumption that the burden would be shouldered equally. As Rush Limbaugh has long shown on his web site, half of our population pays 97% of the taxes. So, it stands to reason that half of our population would pay 97% of this bailout. There is nothing “fair” about that…it is nothing more than a massive Socialist/Communist wealth redistribution program.
Robin Hood was a Robbing Hoodlum. Now Paulson wants to play Robin Hood.
JUST SAY NO!!!
…starting with the President!!!
Time to impeach congress.
#84 TK if you knew anything about economics it is the top 1% that keep the economy afloat. It’s basic math. The middle class pay nowhere near the taxes they pay. HHHMMM I also believe it is that top 1% that keep people in jobs so they can produce the GDP. Get a clue!
India had the right idea, the CEO messes it up causing people to lose their jobs and they react by beating said CEO to death. Talk about making a killing on wallstreet.
The more I am learning about this, the more I am thinking I WANT a bailout. I have a lot in mutual funds and the value is dropping and some of those companies in which I own stock may go belly up if the stock market keeps dropping because of a do nothing congress. That may lead to even more financial ruin…
Unfortunately they will have to do something. Because if not like the depression everyone will run not walk to the banks to withdraw all of their money from every account. That is what the plan is trying to avoid. If there is no money the banks can play with the economy will collapse. That’s the reality!
