Obama initiates Car Wars

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 23, 2008 11:58 AM

Barack Obama wants to talk about the Issues That Matter.

Issues like John McCain’s inability to send e-mail.

And issues like…the McCain family’s cars:

Democrat Barack Obama’s campaign hit Republican John McCain today over his family’s ownership of foreign cars, saying it would air a TV ad in Michigan highlighting McCain’s statements on buying American.

But the ad, which accuses McCain of misleading Michigan voters by saying he’s bought American vehicles “literally all my life,” doesn’t say that of the 13 vehicles owned by the McCain family, only one is registered to McCain himself – a 2004 Cadillac CTS built in Lansing.

The 12 other vehicles include a 2005 Volkswagen convertible, a 2001 Honda sedan, a 2007 Ford half-ton pickup and three Gem neighborhood electric vehicles – essentially road-worthy golf carts built by a Chrysler subsidiary.

All part of Obama’s laughable “Buy American” posturing.

The Democrats will spread the word about this Issue That Matters with two events in Michigan today to “highlight the McCain’s family vehicles, as well as events in Missouri and Wisconsin.”

Just a reminder of what Obama was driving before he was hoisted by his enviro-sanctimonious petard. From May 2008:

There he goes again. Barack Obama is lambasting Detroit’s Big 3 automakers again for manufacturing SUVs. He attacked the car companies over the weekend for making the “mistake” of investing in SUVs and large trucks instead of producing more fuel-efficient vehicles. Obama also bragged about his Big 3- bashing speech a year ago that delivered “the kind of truth-telling we need from the next president.”

A truth-telling reminder of the gas-guzzling car Obama himself was driving before eco-hypocrisy caught up with him:

Chrysler 300C
Output: 340 hp, 390 lb-ft
EPA fuel economy, city/highway: 17/25 (17/24 AWD)

His fancy wheels got less than the standard 27 mpg that he now whines is too low.

After his do-as-i-say-ism was exposed, he traded in his beast for a Ford Escape Hybrid.

But on the campaign trail, to this day, it’s still the bigger the better.

Obama’s eco-hypocrisy emission standard: High.

Ditto! Of course I’d like to buy American, but if American autos (or any other consumer product, for that matter) isn’t what I want/need, well made, and reasonably priced, then I’ll look elsewhere – I’m willing to pay more for a better product, just to be clear on that point.

Do you think Detroit is listening? Build it, and they will buy…

If they have 2 cars at each house they still come up one short. Or perhaps snausage would rather have them fly their cars to each house when they travel there.

It’s just like a liberal though, to decide what you can own and how many.

Many luxury cars are designed and manufacted in the US now: BMW, Mercedes, Chrysler, etc.

Many of the highest performing (best warranty, longest lifespan, ability to maintain value, etc.) cars (and especially the engines) are manufactered in the US now: Toyota, Honda, etc.

The vast majority of “everyday” American cars vastly outperform European high performance vehicles: The Ford F150 pickup truck can outrun a Porche, Chryslers are more nimble, more powerful and more agile than a Bentley, Lincolns (and Chryslers) can outperform BMWs on a rally course…the list goes on.

Foreign cars, particularly European cars, simply look nice. But, they break every week, cost 10 times as much to buy, cost 20 times as much to fix when they do break, and get horrible gas mileage – far worse than even an old pickup truck, unless you get one of those micro cars that go 70 miles per hour and would squash if you leaned against it.

McCain created this phony issue by criticizing Obama as rich and out of touch.

    B. Hussein Obama is rich and out of touch. Where’s the phony?

McCain ads showed Obama’s million dollar home. Well, McCain is far wealthier than Obama, his home costs far more (homes cost far more), and so on.

Good for McCain! After all he’s been through and the all the physical pain he had to endure – with NO relief – I am glade he is rich! I wish I was rich, too!

    McCain is out of touch.

Oh really? Did “3AM” Obama tell you that?

He doesn’t know the price of gas because he never pumps his own.

So what? I doubt few senators pump their own gas; I doubt Obama even drives his own vehicle.

He doesn’t have to use a computer (don’t give the war disability line — if he can write, he can type) because his secretary takes dictation.

a.) Nearly all poiliticians have secretaries – so what’s your point? – and (b.) Your empathy and appreciation for President McCain’s sacrifice and service to this country is underwhelming.

It’s fitting that the mud McCain threw at Obama is hitting McCain in the face.

So you say! We’ll see who’s face is muddied come Saturday morning.

Do you have a problem with that?

Do you have a problem with PRESIDENT McCain? I don’t think you really do, as you’re doing an awesome job at getting us worked up to elect him, i.e., I still believe you are a GOP plant.

Cindy McCain is far wealthier (than John). John is a humble public servant and retired Navy pilot.

John McCain has seven houses and thirteen cars and a private jet. That’s not humble. McCain got access to fancy houses by marrying a rich girl who got her money from a rich daddy (think of the husband of Paris Hilton). Obama got his money mostly from books. His first book is still a best seller two years after it was published.

And Obama’s home DOES cost less…

    Thanks for agreeing to something.

because Obama got that wicked cool Deal from Rezko, his friend and felon.

The market price of Obama’s home is about $2M, Rezko or no Rezko. One of McCain’s homes has a market value over $10M. I’m not jealous, but it’s just wrong to say Obama is rich elite without remembering that McCain is richer and more elite.

Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska has been indicted for getting cheap housing from criminals. Palin is supporting him for re-election. Don’t pretend Republicans care about sleaze.

The only acronym I’ve ever heard used for PONTIAC was when I was at Compaq and the server design team heard they were going to use the new Windows 2000 Operating System (this was in early 1999). It stood for “P*** on NT5 In A Compaq.” Windows 2000 at the time was being called Windows NT5. Yeah, it worked out to be PONT5IAC, but someone would just say “Pontiac” and every geek in the room would chortle and snort.

Unlike the trolls here, I believe one should drive what one wants and can afford. You can afford a big Hummer – that’s your business. I personally like my 200hp 05 Chevy Monte Carlo, and my wife has her Chevy Equinox.
The only complaint I have with SUV’s is when I’m parked between them I cant see around them to back out. But that’s not a big enough concern that I’d want to ban them. I just back out a little more carefully.
Besides, why does Obama get to drive an SUV for safety and a mother of 3 does not? The hypcrisy reeks.

lgm, don’t pretend you care about facts. Do the ends (bashing Republicans) justify the means (spreading lies)? If you have any proof that “Palin is supporting him for re-election”, please give us your source. Either you are lying or the NY Times is lying:

Ms. Palin has spent most of this month out of state, campaigning with Senator John McCain, and has endorsed neither Mr. Stevens nor Mr. Begich…

Few people believe Ms. Palin would openly support a Democrat, but neither is she expected to endorse Mr. Stevens, who goes on trial next week in Washington on federal felony charges that he concealed more than $250,000 in home renovations and gifts.

So who’s telling the truth, lgm or the NY Times? It’s one thing to bash Republicans, but it’s quite another to out distort the Times to do it.
