Here comes the $25 billion automakers’ bailout
The bailout binge continues apace. I’ve pointed out to you already that both Barack Obama and John McCain support the $25 billion automakers’ bailout. It’s speeding through Congress as we speak. President Bush will sign it this week after both parties fall in line and pass it (vote is expected in the House tonight).
Detroit Free Press reports:
Michigan lawmakers hailed the imminent passage of $25 billion in loans for the U.S. auto industry on Wednesday as a key step toward saving thousands of jobs in the state, and vowed to press for an additional $25 billion to boost the industry’s retooling.
Under the bill expected to pass the House this evening, the Bush administration will have two months to write the rules for the loans, and Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow said she expected the money to begin flowing to automakers and parts suppliers by the end of the year.
“There is no bigger issue for Michigan than what we’re accomplishing today,” said Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph. “This is a testament to the strengths of every member.”
The clause speeding the loans should ease concerns of some automakers and parts suppliers that the money would not be available for several months. Officials said the U.S. Department of Energy had told them it would take a year to write the rules for the loans.
While lawmakers did not win changes that would have let companies use the loans on a broader array of projects, they said they would closely monitor the program and press for changes if the loans did not flow freely. The industry had asked for up to $50 billion over three years, but eased off after the idea met strong resistance.
“We’ve got the best deal for the industry that we can,” said Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn. “I think we got that which they need to go forward.”

After the push ramped up in August – and the automakers doubled their bid to $50 billion – critics attacked the proposal as a unnecessary bailout for uncompetitive companies. Yet as Wall Street’s problems worsened, and the Bush administration escalated its rescue efforts into a $700 billion bailout, the auto industry’s request came to be seen as a small step to help an industry with blue-collar roots.
Lawmakers said the support of presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain — whose backing was brokered in part by Upton and other Michigan Republicans — was key to getting the loans paid for.
The industry had warned that because the loans could only apply to vehicles that were 25% more efficient than direct competitors, few new models would qualify. Those rules still apply, as do restrictions limiting the loans to covering no more than 30% of the costs for a single project.
“It’s been a struggle here in Washington to secure an acknowledgment that a domestic-based auto industry is vital for America,” said Rep. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak. “What this does is to embody that idea, and to help it continue to be.”
The loans were included in a budget resolution that held several other spending measures to keep the government open through March. The Senate was expected to pass the bill on Thursday, and the measure should get a signature from President Bush shortly thereafter.

As I’ve noted from the start of stimuluspalooza over a year ago, this ain’t the first one and it won’t be the last one. (Funny how you’ve heard almost nothing about the Washington Times report I blogged about yesterday on the addition of student loans and car loans to the bank bailout).
If you’re one of the foolish people out there still paying your bills on time, you might want to reconsider your responsible ways.

While originally in the “wait and see” column when it came to the economic bailout, watching the “Oh, yeah, let’s tack this on, too” snowball roll down the mountain slope — apparently now including credit cards and student loans, and who knows what else — I have to say that I’m with the not-in-favor crowd.
It’s one thing to incur a trillion dollars of more government debt to prevent the prospect of many trillions more lost in a market and economic crash. Quite another when Congress sees the problem as an opportunity to host a financial orgy.
And that, unfortunately, is what has happened. We’re at the point where our political class is at the same level as the Roman senate was when the Emperor Tiberius dismissed them collectively as “Men fit to be slaves.”
When Harley Davidson borrowed from the government to retool and reinvent their manufacturing processes, they paid back the loan early even though it was of no financial benefit for them to do so, just a matter of pride. Who would like to place a bet that that sort of responsibility will not be seen out of any of these bailouts?
It’s funny, I was just talking with Mrs. Deaux last night about how irresponsible borrowers can walk away from million dollar homes, but you can’t even discharge a student loan through bankruptcy. This is what you get for trying to better yourself. You can keep all of your debt and help pay off the debt of others.

Ok fine. $1mil for a house (I’m in NYC after all), four years of study at NYU.. that will come to approximately $150k, Credit cards.. well perhaps a cool 250k – I need to furnish that house, and hey, it ain’t cheap living in NYC anyway. I’d like a car too, perhaps two to go with my house.. 100k reasonable? SO what’s that total.. $1.5mil. Round it up to an even $2mil so I can take an extended world tour to recover from all this stress, that should see me right for now.

Alan Keyes anyone? I’m tired of having to vote for the lesser of two evils here. Good grief, we haven’t had one good Republican President in 45 years (take out Eisenhower and we’re forced to look all the way back to T. Roosevelt). The GOP abandoned us, so we should seek life elsewhere. No longer will I allow them to take my vote for granted and do whatever they wish, thinking the whole time I’m right there with them. I just wonder if others have the courage to vote on principle, for the good, rather than out of fear, a dread of losing what little we have left. Right now we’re playing to not lose rather than to win. There is a difference.
I want some too! $300,000 for my mortgage and since I don’t have any other debts, how about a new car? Mine is a ‘93 Oldsmobile (It was my grandma’s) and is wearing out. I also have 2 teenagers who’ll get licenses in the next year so they need cars too.

THIS 25BILLION IS FOR OUR WONDERFUL AUTO INDUSTRY TO CONTINUE IT’S CRAP. all of our carmakers have GOOD cars with great gas mileage in europe, yet they refuse to bring them here, or better yet, make them here. so gm & chrysler debut its plug in vehicles which can go 100 miles on a charge. we have rolling blackouts, and these blithering idiots want us to buy a specialty car for commuter use only while we have to buy another car for real use. AND THESE ARE THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST WE SHOULD GIVE 25BILLION BUCKS!
sonofdy, I think you should throw drangodarlin and letget $20k as an early payoff bonus. Afterall, their intentions were good, they got into debt in the first place, right? We shouldn’t penalize them for being responsible. It’s how there were raised.

Unfortunately, I am one of those foolish people that already paid my mortagage off. If I would have only known, I would have waited.
When we pay off everybody elses houses off, do we get to stay in some of those houses for vacations. Kind of like having a condo, and the people that could not pay their houses off can host us that did in appreciation for our hard earned money. We helped save their house, now they can allow us to use their/our houses for a vacation home.
Sounds like a good idea, right?

Here’s some perspective on the bailout.
I worked at what is now a notorious mortgage bank, which was held out as a very responsible and well-capitalized company in the press. Having perceived what should have been obvious to company management and most wall Street analysts, I made what I thought was a good decision and joined forces with the private equity investors that pick up the pieces of such failed mortgage companies. I work 7 days in some weeks and work long hours. Pretty proactive, huh?
If it weren’t for the bailout of Fannie and Freddie, hoever, I would be dead in the water, because who the heck is left to buy our loans? Yes I think they all should go to jail, then to hell.
My girlfriend, who works at a venture-backed high tech company, who commutes up to three hours per day, works on the weekend and as late as midnight to get up to speed in what is the next growth tech sector. She would be dead in the water, too.
We both moved from SF to be in LA, where the money is. We have virtually no debt and are as angry as you are for being responsible and putting 20% of our money in 401Ks, while others bought the houses (we rent, thank badness), fancy cars and vacations (which we never get to take) that turns out in the end that they could not afford.
There has to be some intervention, at least to limit the collateral damage. If there is no intervention, then we have savings and relatively low fixed expenses. We have some cushion given the relatively great exertions we have made to head off disasters. But longer-term financial security will take a big hit.
Each of you better hope that they have taken the same precautions. Not that I am a fan of the bailouts as described here –far from it. We have created the mother of all moral hazards, and you know what, human nature won’t change: we’ll find some other way to screw up.
Many of those today will forget those lessons and make the same mistakes 5-10 years from now.
I’m in favor on helping the automakers –many here give them too little credit and too much credit to ther foreign automakers, whose governments will be more than happy to doing what it takes to wipe out competitors in the world’s biggest market (they do not play by our rules — those are white American’s rules, not theirs). I’ll comment on this later, but now I have to save my job.
Never let it be said I don’t think big! The 10k will do fine.
