Kill the bailout: Capitol Hill to pull an all-nighter; negotiations break down

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 25, 2008 07:31 PM

Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson’s meeting with lawmakers at 8pm Eastern tonight to try and bail out his trillion-dollar bailout.

The cable networks are reporting that Capitol Hill will pull an all-nighter.

I would urge all those Beltway staffers again to review Paulson’s abysmal record of misjudgments and pronouncements before signing onto anything in a rush to nail something down before tomorrow’s market open.

And fiscal conservatives in Washington: Keep an eye on the lard-up for us, please. God knows what the bailout architects will try to stuff into the package in the middle of the night.

***

Update: Negotiations break down. The Democrats have banded together…to turn on their old Maverick friend, John McCain.

What did you expect, my friend?

Top Democrats angrily accused Republican White House contender John McCain of sabotaging an astronomically expensive deal to bail out Wall Street and shore up the US economy.

The 700-billion-dollar package stalled at talks convened by President George W. Bush with top lawmakers and both the men vying to succeed him — McCain and Democrat Barack Obama.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke were joining a new round of late-night discussions Thursday in a bid to get the deal back on track.

“John McCain did nothing to help, he only hurt the process,” the senior Democrat said at a joint news conference with Senate banking committee chairman Christopher Dodd.

Barney Frank, the Democratic chair of the House of Representatives financial services committee, said: “I think this was a campaign ploy for Senator McCain.

“I think they then had the problem that there might not have been enough of a deadlock for him to resolve,” he said, after Dodd had earlier announced an in-principle agreement with some senior Republicans on the bailout package.

(To all the PC bloggers, PARDON MY CAPS, but I do believe this situation calls for some YELLING from CONSTITUENTS!)

In fact, I have been calling my own Congressional Reps for 2 days with NO answers from them about their positions on this “Bailout”. (Reid, Ensign, Porter & Berkley)
Will they vote in the middle of the night and then go home???!!!???
IN ANY CASE, I have told them to VOTE NO. I have also told them that I GET IT:

    Sec. Paulson “says” he needs:
    • 700 Billion “LAXATIVE” to flush the “toxic” mortgage backed securities out of financial institutions, then dump them upon the U.S. taxpayers at premium prices, to “free up” the flow of credit.
DID I GET THAT RIGHT? NO, THE LOWLY MIDDLE-CLASS VOTERS ARE NOT SO STUPID.

YOU CANNOT REFORM LACK OF INTEGRITY, ON THE PART OF BROKERS, INVESTORS, OR LOAN APPLICANTS, BY REWARDING THEM.

    • THE RESULT OF PAULSON / BUSH’S PLAN, AS I SEE IT, will be a huge trough for all the same PIGS on Wall Street AND in the Congress, from both parties. The very same PIGS that got us into this.

    HERE’S AN IDEA:
Socialism is socialism, so if our government is going to pony up on a “bailout” how about a plan to address our financial cisis and dependency on foreign oil:
Buy us all American made electric cars, with an agreement from GM and Ford to pour a significant portion of the proceeds directly back into the credit market as a “laxative”.
    • More U.S jobs created
    • Less oil consumed
    • Money reinvested into the ailing credit markets

Now, I am no “financial genius”, but isn’t it those “geniuses” that got us here in the first place?
I SAY NO WAY TO PAULSON’S SCHEME.

Oh, and let’s make it clear as to who the victims are, THOSE OF US THAT HAVE NOT DEFAULTED ON OUR LOAN COMMITMENTS OR COMMITTED FRAUD WITHIN THE FINANCIAL MARKETS ARE THE VICTIMS!!!!

M.M.’s words: God knows what the bailout architects will try to stuff into the package in the middle of the night.

This is what scares me the most. Will we still have gun rights? Will we still have a home? Those lowlife’s have slid things into bills before like in Sept. of 1996 when suddenly it was illeagle to own a gun if ever sentenced for any kind of violence in the past. That meant if someone 60 yrs old did something foolish when he was 16 he was instantly a law breaker if he owned a gun. There were good law officers that had to quit their jobs because they couldn’t have a gun. Here in Nebraska a prison gaurd had to quit his job because he could no longer handle a gun. This is getting out of hand more and more each day. The government is getting us right where they want us and we are letting them. Every single one of them needs to be put out of office and pay back all the wages they have been paid for screwing us. They need to be put in the soup line. Not a one could do an honest days work because for one thing, they don’t know what honest is and another thing is…can you imagine ted kennedy operating a jack-hammer……..I mean in his younger days, it would kill him to actually work. But we paid him to kill a young girl and he kept his so called job of screwing the rest of us in a different way than he did Mary Jo. We are sheep being led off to slaughter.

as much as we detest many things McCain has done, I really do think that he stiffened the opposition to this bailout

By all accounts, that’s not the case. It sounds like he did very little one way or another.

The Dems think they have us over a barrel and they are stalling any bill, unless it contains all sorts of cash for their crooked projects. They figure if the stockmarket hits 1000, they’ll win the election.

That is the way they are thinking. They will do what they can to bring on a Great Depression, thinking it will result in Democratic dominance for the next fifty years.

The Dems are all over CNN saying Obama made all the proposals and McCain had nothing to say. Interspersed with clips of Palin telling Couric she’ll get back to her. Not the campaign’s finest moment. The Dems had their usual BS about tax credits being a giveaway of tax money to the rich.

Yes I heard them claim Obama was instrumental in the CEO salary limitation portion of the agreement. Another insider, when told of this news, said Obama had absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever.
And now they’re claiming McCain had nothing to say, yet somehow they’re blaming him for the talks breaking down. That’s a neat trick – apparently his presence alone is enough to make the dems lose the plot, LOL!

Why should 20% of any profit go to Acorn??? This is taxpayer money, and ALL proceeds (if there were any) should go directly back to the taxpayers in the form of rebates or something similar. Acorn are giving NOTHING, so why should they become a beneficiary? This is such a farce.

Very interesting. You mean 1 senator, John McCain, can now stop all action? Gee, I thought the President was a one man government. Now, it’s switched. It is now the Republican candidate that runs the country now. He says, “no” and everything stops.

McCain probably won’t be elected as President thanks to this economic mess, but at least he’s doing what he thinks is right and I respect this. All this talk about him doing it for political showmanship is total crap.

On the economic note, I’ve been living in the UK for the past two months and can tell you that the US economy, in the state it’s in right now, is far better off than the UK economy. I’m headed to France this weekend and I expect to find the same thing (keep in mind France has a semi-nationalized system).

The resolve of our nation has always been tested most when the chips are down, but we’ve moved past that to a nation of whiners and babies.

Our friends in Congress don’t actually know what to do yet – the polls are clear.

You don’t expect them to actually LEAD, do you?

How funny it will be if the polls indicate that even 51% of Americans don’t trust the bailout. Then it won’t be McCain’s fault that the talks stalled. No, then it will be Oschleprock who “saved things.”

Even in these days of failures, you can bank on that…
