More Obama gangland tactics: Signs banned at Virginia rally today
Reader Ron e-mails that the Obama campaign has issued a decree banning all signs at a rally today at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia.
It is a public campus on public property.
The local newspaper, the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star is up in arms:
NOT ALL COUNTRIES guarantee their citizens the right to virtually unbridled freedom of speech. The United States does. Would someone please tell the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama? And the dozing guardians of liberty at the University of Mary Washington?
Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee for president, is scheduled to speak at a rally at the university today. The public is invited to this forum, on property it, the public, owns. However, signs and banners will not be allowed, according to the organizers and compliant campus officials. Suddenly, UMW is a First Amendment-Free, or at least a First Amendment-Crippled, Zone, subject to the self-serving preferences of politicos. Why does an Obama rally–or a McCain rally or a Nader rally–justify taking a little off the top of Americans’ most fundamental rights?
A UMW spokeswoman says that the Obama campaign required the sign-and-banner ban. That campaign tells us that the ban is for “security” reasons. But a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, responsible for protecting presidential candidates, says that the service has no objection to signs at rallies, provided that no “part of the sign could be used as a weapon”–e.g., a heavy metal pole or a sharpened stick. Finally, the McCain campaign tells us, “We encourage people to make signs at our events.”

My wife and I are both Alums. Part of what I liked most about UMW was that, as universities go, it was fairly accepting of *all* viewpoints, not just liberal ones. Yes, it had some of your standard liberal bias, but they didn’t shut down conservative ideas either.
It appears a lot has changed since I graduated. Any mailers sent for donations at this point will be wasted paper.
What about hats, shirts? Are the goons going to rip them off people? Gads, bho makes me tired.

The list of things that are prohibited by BO continues to grow:

Now signs are banned under the guise that they could compromise security. How convenient.

The answer? It doesn’t. The end game is that if this guy is elected, you will begin to see people disappear, never to be heard from again.

Note to worry, people. There are lots of opportunities for creative protesting here: People with white t-shirts with one letter each that could spell out a phrase, then quickly disperse (e.g. OBAMA SUCKS) to an anagram (BAA MOCKS US or A SO SACK BUM).
Mass mooning sounds promising as do chants of: “Give Us A Sign!”

I’ll bet that this is related to another story I saw recently, about some African-Americans at an Obama rally. They had signs that read, “Blacks Against Obama”, and they protested him. Much more well behaved than Code Stupid, by the way. This has scared the Astroturfer-in-Chief Axelrod, so now no more signs at all.
This is change alright. Change to the First Amendment. Can change to the Second Amendment be far behind?

The Obama campaign has a permit for a small section of campus. outside of that section signs are more than welcome. I know, I just met with the campus police. There will be a prolife presence there as well as a pro-McCain presence from what I understand.
Also, another interesting point is I heard that the University bookstore was selling Obama t-shirts, so I went to investigate.
From what I understand Friday at 8am they started taking order for Obama t-shirts. At 11am the attorney general of Virginia called and told them to cease, which they did. I was there around lunchtime and they stopped taking orders. Of course one of the bookstore workers blamed it on the fact that the attorney general is Republican. nevermind the fact it is illegal….
That’s why, boys and girls, it’s up to us to forward on stories like this to our friends/family. Young people don’t have the experience to understand the implications of denial of free speech – from the day they enter school they are trained to submit to rules…. The kind of wisdom to clearly see a violation of those rights only comes with the study of civil rights and our own Constitution. I’d love to see major indignation by anyone attending this indoctrination session, at the very least, signs and banners lining the parade route.

The latest gossip on the beltway is that an October Surprise is coming. An undisclosed publicist has let it slip that Barack Hussein Obama will roll out his third book one month prior to the November general election. It will be a coffee table type book complete will photos, diagrams, and sketches. The anonymous source states that the book will be titled The American Karma Sutra. It will go into great detail about the 1001 positions that the American public can assume when the ONE is president and the legislature and judicial branch are finally in democrat control. The preface by Howard Dean states that the doctrine of Hope and Change could last 1000 years.

My strongest impression of Obama last night was of an angry, scowling man who apparently thought that was a “presidential” look. It was just scary, like everything he does. I hope that everywhere he goes now, there will be protest signs all over the place! He just stepped in it.

I just attended the McCain/Palin rally in Media PA. We brought our own signs and even were fortunate enough to be picked to sit up on the stage bleachers and our signs were there.
There were a group of protestors in the back of the crowd all with signs.
No one took away anyones signs be they pro or con.

Some tool on the Fred’burg site commented the signs would be a ‘distraction’ and would ‘block people’s views’ (irony alert!) Go to Google Images and look for Obama campaign rally.
A veritable sea of OBAMA ‘08 signs in many of the photos. So the distraction/block views argument is a non-starter.
The real issue is this. He is appearing in a heavily Republican area, and he wants to stifle any dissent which rear its ugly, irreverent head.
bansharia…I hope I didn’t offend you with my comment. It just seems strange to me that signs are taken away at rallys and that is standard procedure. I never heard of that before and can’t understand why that would be the case. I mean, they even allow the most hateful protestors to bring signs. I do believe you…but it is just so un-American! Are you saying they took them away because they were dangerous, not because of content? Or just take them all in case they may offend? If it is the latter, that is unconstitutional.
I would venture to think that the reason they are prohibitting signs is that you cannot display opposition to The Tarnished Bovine in any negligible manner. After the pprotestations of the representatives of the 5% of the black population that is smart enough not to be buffaloed and used by The Tarnished Calf several days ago, and how they embarrassed him, they are going to try to keep any further showings of his failure to brainwash others.
Chances are they are going to be filming something that day and do not want anything other than doe-eyed mooks looking up at him in fascination while his Brownshirts cruise the audience seeking out dissent.

This should pretty much inform any undecided open-minded individuals left out there, what they can expect from a (God help us!), President Obama. Absolute obedience! His ascention the “the throne” is more important than any individual rights guaranteed by a piece of paper called “The Bill of Rights.” Afterall, isn’t it THE ONE who keeps telling us, “Words! Just words…”

is. To add more confusion one Dubya rally was in 2004 so that could have had POTUS rules. In 2000 Gore had hired
jerks to travel around and disrupt Dubya rallies. Had seen them swarm in and moved over closer to chat them up.
When Dubya started talking they whipped out whistles to drown him out. I snapped 2 of them out of their mouths b4 they knew what hit them. They tried to get the police to arrest me, were told to shut up or leave
Yes, it is a bad idea to prohibit signs. We have seen this before and it was a bad idea then, and it remains so.
If memory serves, there was a little old lady that was issued a ticket, threatened with arrest, and removed from a public place (might have been in Seattle) because she had a sign that was foggy about whether she supported the candidate giving a speach at the time. The entire episode was cauhgt on camera. A campaign aid said he was directed by the Secret Service to have her removed and the local police obliged him. That was a mistake and simply wrong then and it is a mistake and simply wrong now.

at the rally in Lancaster all homemade signs were taken. That said a few were smuggled in, one giant one that said “democrats for Mccain”.

I’m tired of seeing Obama signs in people’s yards and I would like to pretend I am on a little piece of UMW’s campus wherever I go.
This is why I want the hell out of VA. Ever since my husband and I moved here, we’ve been feeling the pinch of this state’s userous tax policies. This state has no respect for its military because they make military members jump through hoops during election and tax time. It’s really amazing that people think the economy is at all good in VA right now with the way their tax structure is set up.
Why is Obummer so afraid of signs? Why? The anti-war folks get in military members’ faces when they’re protesting but people can’t voice their concerns or opinions at his stupid rally. C’mon.
I’m afraid that a lot of the elite liberals are starting to relocate from places like Maryland and other East Coast states into VA. The demographics are changing rapidly and what was once a conservative state is turning into a sanctuary state for illegals and “moderates.” VA is facing a lot of problems such as traffic congestion, overcrowding (especially in Hampton Roads where I live), and budget “shortfalls” (as useless governor Tim Kaine would like to say) then you have what will become a Dem stronghold.
Can’t wait to get outta here! The Dems can collect taxes ’til the day VA citizens die (especially on property such as cars and other vehicles that the state has not right to) and the state will still not escape its decay.
If this is the kind of future that VA citizens want (especially those “well-meaning,” self-pitying black communities) then they’re welcome to it. However, they’re not going to hold me and my family hostage. VA is a disappointment just like my home state of NY and the rest of the East Coast. It’s really sad how things have turned out here.
Maybe when you mentioned you were at a Palin rally with a sign for Track, it gave the impression you were a lib with an anti-war sign and that is why they took it away. That was my first impression. I have also been thought of as liberal when I gave a wrong impression, and I am a very far right-wing conservative. It is insulting to say the least! But we have a sense of humor, unlike liberals who, upon being accused of being a conservative would probably spit at you or use a four letter word.

On another note, I live in an area where if you own a Hummer, you are pretty much guaranteed to have some kind of damage done to it if it is not secured away at night.
Off topic, but someone else brought it up. ACORN is still in the bail-out bill and that is completely unacceptable! How do we fight this? How can they get away with giving OUR money to help fund an organization that is being investigated for voter fraud, along with other charges? How can they get away with putting that in an emergency bill which sole purpose should be to take care of this crisis. John McCain is now back in DC and is working on the bill. I doubt he will let them get away with it. If he does, he is toast.
By the way, I want names of those who introduced ACORN into the bill. Names!! They need to be kicked out of office.
I feel your pain. I am still here because my family is originally from here. Dad is retired military. They are getting fairly advanced in years. Once they are gone, I am too. Maybe sooner. I like Texas. Tennessee is nice, too.
