Breaking: It’s official. House rejects Trillion-Dollar-Plus Crap Sandwich; roll call vote added

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 29, 2008 01:49 PM

Scroll for updates…roll call vote added…

The votes have been tallied.

228 NAY.

205 YEA.

The Crap Sandwich goes down in flames. (My liveblog of the floor debate is here.)

Still no official announcement on the House floor. Lots of yelling for “order.”

Someone has changed his/her vote.

It’s now 227 NAY, 206 YEA, 1 Not Voting.

1:59pm Eastern. The allotted 15 minutes for voting is over, but there is still no official announcement. Arm-twisting is underway, but only one changed vote so far.

2:06pm Eastern. It’s official. The MOAB has failed.

Yeah, a lot of Chicken Littles are running around screaming about the Dow dropping.

It’s dropped less than 5 percent.

Apocalyptics said it would be down 20-30 percent.

The bailout failed.

The world survives.

***

2:29pm Eastern. I’ve been trying to access the House website for the roll call vote, but the entire site is hung up.

Meantime, the GOP leadership is holding a press conference. Imagine if they had been on the right side of this monster. They could be claiming victory, seizing the momentum, and advancing the conservative agenda. Instead, they’re complaining about Nancy Pelosi’s partisan attack on the floor. (Vid here.) What did you expect, crap sandwich swallowers?

***

Here’s the roll call vote…

Try having no income, no prospect of income, living on a dirt floor week after week with a thin blanket to cover you on cold nights. I’ve been there – not in this country though. That’s not the half of it.

I may frame this post. It could be the single funniest post I have ever read.

    Nice sympathy play though.

however with all that mush, you still ignore how the liberals took us to this point in time.

These are the most entertaining kind of comments. They are usually uttered by those that have never experienced anything close to what they describe.

It’s easy to be fearless of something that you truly don’t believe you’ll have to deal with.

At one point in my life I was homeless for over a year. I clawed my way up without one damned collectivist handout. Now I live a good life due to my own hard work.

I would give it all up and go back on the streets if it meant having to be a slave to the State.

Stick that in your collectivist pipe and suck on it hard.

You’re not a conservative. You’re a pragmatic collectivist. You think it’s okay to have some socialism – just a little bit more slavery – to bail you out on your 401k, or to win the next election, or whatever.

Today was a great day for freedom.

We just have to hold the course and protect ourselves from the vampire next time. Because it will be back. The collectivist b*tch is in full-blown heat.

DanME, this is not a Republican or Democrat problem. It’s an American problem. Blaming others is why nothing can get done in Washington anymore.
Nancy Pelosi, as House Speaker, has not learned that. Harry Reid, as Senate Majority Leader, has not learned that.
They are the party in power and they actually do hold the power, but seem unable to get over their victimhood to get anything done.
It is why their approval rating has been in freefall for the past two years.
When they stop blaming and start acting like grownups, they will be better leaders. Nobody wants to follow the crybaby with a load in their pants.

The bailout scares me more than no bailout. It would only put off the day of reckoning and make it worse. It will not even begin to solve the foreclosure problem or oversupply in the market, which will have to work itself out over a period of years. What we will have to do some day is simply cut government spending and balance the budget. Even if it means raising taxes to pay for the party, but no new programs or money down the drain, like this bailout. We have been living in a financial la-la land where everbody gets everything and nobody is left out. The party is over and it is time to face reality.

There will be a good deal of suffering but in the end it will be unavoidable. I work in the construction industry and know the hit we will be taking: it is going to be ugly. However, we survived Jimmy Carter and we will survive this crisis. (BTW, I lived in a third world country for 4 years. I know what suffering is and am convinced that is where we are heading unless we face this thing down, not avoid it). One silver lining will be watching all the youthful Obama supporters finding out how bountiful the Bush years were and what real economic pain looks like.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody remember the so called “friction free economy” and end of recessions that was being trumpeted by the internet new economy gurus back in the 90’s. People would roll their eyes at me when I used to try to explain that the information age only meant people would make bad decisons and overreact more quickly than before, instead of making calm rational decisons that would prevent economic meltdowns. Where are all those new economy gurus now?

Was this a “rope a dope”? The big $$$ bill was allowed to be written up by a bunch of Democrats. Bush’s effort to reach across I guess. At least everyone now knows this Freddie and Fannie biz is a bunch of crap. (a good thing) Also, Russia and other anti-American markets are tanking and they may not weather stuff the way USA can. We may be weakened, but what if our enemy’s are put out of business but good? Oil is down to $95 and that is going to hurt Iran. All bad stuff has a bright side. By the way, anytime someone tells you that you have to act immediately or else, Go for the “or else”. Buying a pig-in-the-poke is an old saying. Lots of people don’t know what that is. This bill was a pig-in-a-poke.

I’ve lived through hard times. I know what it’s like to grow up with 2 parents, and one of those parents being out of work and the entire family living on one salary- under 30k. Spare me.

I know what it’s like to be a struggling grad student with no health care and working a dead-end job that paid my basics and not much else. I had so thin a budget that it squeeked. My roommates made fun of me for eating Ramen every night while they lived beyond their means and ate out all the time.

I know that my pathetic excuse for a Roth IRA will be hit. It wasn’t that much to begin with because it’s been unwisely managed. I’m now considering all measure to protect my personal/family investments.

What is your solution? Hmmmm? What do you advise the average employee who doesn’t have a 401K and rather has to find other resources to save their pennies and plan for their retirements?

I fully recognize how bad things can get because my 76 year old father grew up during the Great Depression. I’m 33 years old and have an insight about that period in time that many of my peers will never have and can barely comprehend if they did. I’ve always lived within my means and had a budget (something that is beyond comprehension to the idiots who contributed to this financial crisis). I’ve worked hard all my life and I’m telling you right now that these politicians have no right to screw ME over because they fouled up this economy and decided to ignore it.

Reexamine the situation. Please. Your assumptions make a fool out of you and everybody else.

Likewise. But if it’s going to happen, I’d like to see it involve reversing the stupid decisions which led us to this point. For instance, CRA should be scrapped. No bank should ever be pressured to lend money to bad credit risks. And Fannie and Freddie should be scrapped or made completely private.

I could, reluctantly, go along with some sort of bail-out. But they MUST correct the underlying problems. Otherwise we’ll just go through this all over again in another dozen years.

I bet they do! This election will go down in history as the wildest. Let’s hope there is a landslide on November 4th, or lawyers will be descending on Secretary of States like no other time before. Time to Rock the Vote and help McCain/Palin return some civility to DC.

Rob, ouch. Your comment hurts even the reader.

Here in what has become Mexian, Black land.. it hurts every damn day.

I go for a walk in my neighborhood with my wife, and I get HARD looks from the blacks and Mexicans sitting in groups on the curb or in the driveways in an area that ten years ago was safe and nice.

I went to the 7/11 yesterday to get gas, and a loud, rap-playing, car full of young gang member blacks sat at blared their noise and acted tough.

Even the signs are becoming Mexican.

It HURTS you to read it? How about living it?

Mexico, coming to a neighborhood near you….

Interesting that the Dow lost 777 points. Bible prophecy is big on 7’s.

I’m not a believer but that struck me as odd too.

Also found it odd that Shep Smith rounded up to 778 for his report. Weird.

    Alea iacta est!

If it means my freedom and the freedom of my children, it’s a great thing. A glorious thing. A thing to be celebrated.

Are you saying your freedom is worth 777 points?

Well, let’s put it this way: Your freedom isn’t worth a whole lot when the companies that employ you are going out of business.

People have to face facts. If you want to earn money, you give up a certain amount of your freedom.

The economy in a melt down is not conducive to freedom.

I grew up in New Orleans. CA has lots of pretty bad spots, but nothing on the Fischer Housing Projects pre-Katrina (haven’t been to N.O. since then so I can’t say what it’s doing these days).

Any caucasian stupid enough to walk through it back then would likely meet death in a few seconds.

Pehaps we DON’T want to earn more money if it means we can’t live in a safe and sane place live.

We love the internet, but is all the sex, porn crap worth it?

If we all have to live in tents cooking over firewood, but don’t have to deal with the losers that get welfare, steal, tag, deal drugs, kill our children, get free lunches..etc.,

Perhaps, we would be a hell of a lot safer and happier.

    Perhaps THAT is real freedom.

What? What? You’ve missed out on a lot of discussions on this subject in previous posts.

    Let’s establish a few things.

When you earn money you are engaging in freedom. Money is the transmission of value between two people. If you work for me, you are willingly giving over your time for money, and vice-versa.

You do not “surrender” your freedom. You are engaging in a contract to perform work. This contract is engaged in of your own free will.

If the company I work for goes out of business, I am free to work elsewhere! I am free to start my own business! I am free to go eat grass in the park!

But what no human being should ever be able to do is use the STATE to CONFISCATE money from other people to protect an INVESTMENT.

    THAT IS EVIL.

    Let’s get another thing straight.

No one forced anyone to sell their stocks today! No one forced anyone to buy stocks today!

People could have refused to sell their stocks at the prices offered. They had their reasons to sell. LET THEM.

The government is not GOD. It can not wade in and determine who should win and who should lose. It does not have the OMNISCIENCE to determine what prices should be in the stock market.

I say it again: my freedom is NOT WORTH 100% of the Dow Jones Industrial Average!

    Caeci caecos ducentes!

Don’t give up! There are always options if you work at it. I just sold my house two weeks ago and made a pretty good profit.

    It wasn’t easy though.

Had to do dry wall work, painting, cleaning. Moved out all of my stuff into a storage unit. Took six months of working at it. Lot of sore muscles.

Stock market declines are very healthy when the wealth that is “destroyed” during the fall never really existed in the first place. Who here understands what gives the stock market value? The dollar? Who here recognizes a buying opportunity when they see one?

Who here understands that when a society consumes more than it produces it is living on borrowed time?

At least today’s turn-of-events make the Presidential election meaningful, again… sort of.
