Nancy Pelosi’s bailout attack speech on the House floor; Update: Pence statement added

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 29, 2008 02:47 PM

I noted it during my liveblog of the House debate. Here’s a video sample of her crap sandwich. As I mentioned while it was happening, she received multiple rounds of applause on the floor before and after her spittle-flecked statement.

And as I mentioned while it was happening, what did the GOP crap sandwich swallowers expect?

I’ve transcribed a bit of it. Can’t listen to her voice anymore than this:

PELOSI: When was the last time anyone ever asked you for $700 billion?

It’s a staggering figure and many questions have arisen from that request. And we have been hearing a very informed debate on all sides of this issue here today. I’m proud of the debate.

$700 billion. A staggering number, but only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies to our country. Policies that were built on budget recklessness when Pres. Bush took office, he inherited Pres. Clinton’s surpluses - four years in a row budget surpluses on a trajectory of $5.6 trillion in surplus. And with his reckless economic policies, within two years, he had turned it around. And now 8 years later, the foundation of that fiscal irresponsibility, combined with an “anything goes” economic policy, has taken us to where we are today.

They claim to be free-market advocates, when it’s really an anything goes mentality. No regulation, no supervision, no discipline. And if you fail, you will have a golden parachute and the taxpayer will bail you out.

Those days are over. The party is over in that respect.

Democrats believe in a free market. We know that it can create jobs, it can create wealth, many good things in our economy. But in this case, in this unbridled form, as encouraged and supported by the Republicans — some Republicans, not all — it has created not jobs, not capital, it has created chaos. And it is that chaos that the Secretary of the Treasury and the Chairman of the Fed came to see us, just about a week and a half ago. It seems like an eternity, doesn’t it? So much has happened. The news was so bad. They described a very dismal situation.

Update 3:06pm Eastern. The House Democrat leaders are now holding a press conference. Looks and sounds like Pelosi took a Valium. The rest of them look dejected. Rahm Emanuel is playing the patriotism card. Frank is going after the Republicans who called out Pelosi for her rabid floor speech.

Update: Staunch conservative bailout opponent GOP. Rep. Mike Pence weighs in…

U.S. Congressman Mike Pence issued the following statement regarding the failure of the bailout bill today:

“Today Congress took a stand for the American taxpayer and free markets. The American people rejected this corporate bailout and today the People’s House did likewise.

“It is now imperative that Congress come together and develop a response to the crisis facing our financial markets that reflects the American people’s belief in personal responsibility and fiscal discipline.

“There are alternatives to the massive federal bailout that Congress rejected. I look forward to working with my colleagues in both parties to develop a response to this crisis that puts taxpayers first and preserves the essential freedom of the American marketplace.”

In the end, it will play out this way; Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Reid will blame the failures built upon bad loans created under Democratic sponsored incentives on the current administration and the Republican Congress without so much as a tip of the hat to their own culpability. They will blame the failure of the bailout on the Republicans, who let her goad them into causing it to fail.
They hope that all of this will cause the general public to vote Democratic as the agents of “Change we can believe in” and then will link with Mr. Obama to “save the day”.
Seems like a pretty good strategy and most conservatives will play right into their hand.
I wish that more people thought strategically rather than tactically or at least bothered to differentiate themselves from Mr. Obama by knowing which was which and how not to step blindly into an ambush when it’s right in front of them plain as day.

This woman is an absolute idiot. The genesis of this problem was Clinton’s CRA and the house Democrat’s stupid and fatal implementation of that act. When you let millions of people borrow money that they can’t and won’t pay back what other outcome could you expect? Now, The same brain dead Democrats are betting on the mindless masses to cover their butts and bail them out. This Democrat congress must go and Pelosi must be sent back to San Francisco to forever flounder with her liberal constituents.

The American people should be mad as hell and they should run everyone of the worthless politicos out of town.

Is Sheehan still planning to run against Nancy? We should all donate to her campaign. Nancy is a complete tool, worst speaker of the house ever!!! Does she even see what a fool she is? At least if Cindy Sheehan replaced her she would be a freshman Congresswoman on small committees. this time Nancy’s complete showing of how incompetent she is worked in our favor, but one day her ignorance could really get us hurt.

Why isn’t some group making a commercial with the comments from the 2004 hearings by Waters, Frank and the rest of the goons? And air in on National and Cable TV?

After each clip show Pelosi saying ‘failed Bush policies’…. show the world the facts about who caused this, and how Pelosi shifts the blame.

Does she remember what happened in the two years after Bush was elected? 9-11, Nancy–you clueless, partisan fool. What Bush inherited from Clinton was an economy in a downturn, sliding into recession after the internet bubble burst. Then, that slide was exacerbated by 9-11. WAKE UP, Worst-speaker-in-the-worst-Congress-ever Pelosi. Set aside the vitriol of partisan attacks and DO SOMETHING. You’re protected in your gerrymandered district in SFO, you have your “golden parachute” already set, so you do not care, you are out of touch, and you use your bully pulpit as a shameless locale for your partisan attacks.

She talks about unbridled free markets and how Democrats favor free market economics. This must be why the support dinosaur unions who stifle free speech, waste profits and produce an unproductive, non-competitive worker who depends on some third-party nanny.

Nancy, you are as clueless as the day is long. This potentiality that has become a reality has been warned of for years–YEARS. Nevertheless, your party refused to listen, refused to act–and now here we are.

This did NOT sneak up on us. Those of us who were watching saw it coming. You, however, were to busy medicating your BDS.

    IMPEACH PELOSI.

Nancy is really, really bad at that job. She is a contentious person who probably offends even her own Party. Is there any way to be rid of her? Partisan as that speech is though, it would have been better had the GOP looked to help the people of this country and tried to ignore her. I know at least a dozen retired people who depend on the market to supplement pensions( they have no choice because CD’s and t-Bills, money mkts. etc simply do not pay enough to cover their bills)who lost most or all of their retirement savings yesterday(hopefully returned, in part) today. Unfortunately many are blaming the GOP(even though that might not be fair)especially since they read about the GOP taking offense at Nancy’s speech and think their behavior childish. When the truth comes out, I think both parties ought to be careful since this voting demographic is hard hit, angry and all of them vote. It is possible that these could influence the election and it seems that they have been side lined while the Parties concentrate on other demographics. Sorry for long post.

The timing on this speech wasn’t all that great. However, for people like Cantor and others to blame her for the votes against the bailout is pathetic. Seriously, growup. Who would let the words of a leader from across party lines affect doing what’s right for the country?
