Nancy Pelosi’s bailout attack speech on the House floor; Update: Pence statement added
I noted it during my liveblog of the House debate. Here’s a video sample of her crap sandwich. As I mentioned while it was happening, she received multiple rounds of applause on the floor before and after her spittle-flecked statement.
And as I mentioned while it was happening, what did the GOP crap sandwich swallowers expect?
I’ve transcribed a bit of it. Can’t listen to her voice anymore than this:
PELOSI: When was the last time anyone ever asked you for $700 billion?
It’s a staggering figure and many questions have arisen from that request. And we have been hearing a very informed debate on all sides of this issue here today. I’m proud of the debate.
$700 billion. A staggering number, but only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies to our country. Policies that were built on budget recklessness when Pres. Bush took office, he inherited Pres. Clinton’s surpluses – four years in a row budget surpluses on a trajectory of $5.6 trillion in surplus. And with his reckless economic policies, within two years, he had turned it around. And now 8 years later, the foundation of that fiscal irresponsibility, combined with an “anything goes” economic policy, has taken us to where we are today.
They claim to be free-market advocates, when it’s really an anything goes mentality. No regulation, no supervision, no discipline. And if you fail, you will have a golden parachute and the taxpayer will bail you out.
Those days are over. The party is over in that respect.
Democrats believe in a free market. We know that it can create jobs, it can create wealth, many good things in our economy. But in this case, in this unbridled form, as encouraged and supported by the Republicans — some Republicans, not all — it has created not jobs, not capital, it has created chaos. And it is that chaos that the Secretary of the Treasury and the Chairman of the Fed came to see us, just about a week and a half ago. It seems like an eternity, doesn’t it? So much has happened. The news was so bad. They described a very dismal situation.
Update 3:06pm Eastern. The House Democrat leaders are now holding a press conference. Looks and sounds like Pelosi took a Valium. The rest of them look dejected. Rahm Emanuel is playing the patriotism card. Frank is going after the Republicans who called out Pelosi for her rabid floor speech.

Update: Staunch conservative bailout opponent GOP. Rep. Mike Pence weighs in…
U.S. Congressman Mike Pence issued the following statement regarding the failure of the bailout bill today:
“Today Congress took a stand for the American taxpayer and free markets. The American people rejected this corporate bailout and today the People’s House did likewise.
“It is now imperative that Congress come together and develop a response to the crisis facing our financial markets that reflects the American people’s belief in personal responsibility and fiscal discipline.
“There are alternatives to the massive federal bailout that Congress rejected. I look forward to working with my colleagues in both parties to develop a response to this crisis that puts taxpayers first and preserves the essential freedom of the American marketplace.”

Resign now you partisan Hack.
She should take the BLAME with this Dem sided rhetoric. hehe.
If they removed Dodd, Frank and Pelosi, it might have passed. Glad their to arrogant to realize that.
This is the price you pay for sitting on Nancy’s couch. The Republicans supporting this charade have no self-respect.
and the Academy Award for worst performance in influencing people goes to…..
I lost IQ points listining to that.
Aside from being the most vile woman in Congress, she may just be the dumbest politician on earth. I had that slot reserved for Biden… but she may have just earned the top spot on the Dunce stack.
Did she actually think vilifying the Bush Administration was going to win over republican votes?
Har….. what a maroon.
When you can’t lead, attack and blame
-Rule #1 Democrat’ rules of engagement and speechification
Did she not just open the door for the Republicans to counter with who was really responsible AND for the insertion of capital gains to zero and required insurance and removal of mark to market. Go Newt.
This is who we have a mere two heart-beats away from the Presidency…God help us.
Way to go Nancy. Your dimocraps, Barney, Maxine, Jamie, Carter, Clinton, Raines and you know the others caused this problem and you blame Bush. Did you forget 9/11 and the cost to our markets and our military response. Oh–you thought France paid for that. What an idiot. The press will blame the Repubs for the failed bill, but you couldn’t sell this crap sandwich to over 90 of your closet friends–Leadership we can believe in. Go eat cake.
This is what caused the bill to fail. I just heard it on FOX…John Boehner came out and said they were very close to approving the bill until they heard her rant. They apparently went ballistic and decided to vote “no”. A big thank you to Nancy Pelosi. The only positive thing she has ever done in her life.
Hey Nan! lie much? like cats feet? wth! grrrrrrrrrrr.
The time for partisan rhetoric was over – yet Pelosi didn’t have the to stop her mouth in the interest of the country. God help us if she and Obama are in power.
My God… there are people who actually vote for her.
She sounds like an unqualified elementary school teacher.
Calm the markets? It’s not Gov’t job to calm the markets. She’s an idiot.
That’s what I’m afraid of. This vile woman needs to go. NOW.
Game CHANGER!
It should be.
It BETTER BE!
There were some major sins of omission by Ms. Pelosi in this clip, and yet, since it was primarily giving an overarching emotional view of the crisis, it wasn’t that bad. The fact remains, however one attempts to justify it, Bush embarked — in the midst of war — on a completely unjustified spending spree and the Republicans, too many though not all, backed him up. All the man had to do was recall the Johnson Administration and know that “Guns&Butter” is a really bad, dumb move. But he didn’t. I was at the 60’s. I remember them. He chose not to.
If Obama and his associates weren’t so horrifying in so many ways, and Ms. Palin so appealing, I probably would have voted democrat this year just out of disgust.
We have to accept the fact. Bush deserves a lot of blame. Not all, but an awful lot.
What makes you think that was her intent?
It isn’t in the Democrat’s best interest to pass this bill quickly. Public sentiment is solidly against it, and the Democrats are much more interested in using it to stay in the spotlight for a while longer and blaming the Bush Administration for what is rapidly appearing to be a concocted “disaster.”
Even if the worst-case predictions come true – failed banks, empty coffers for payrolls, and so on – that isn’t going to happen for several weeks, well after the elections.
The Democrats are far more interested in using this issue for political leverage than in solving anything, and if they have to hang the entire United States out to dry in the process, they won’t hesitate to do so.

This woman is a complete idiot! How does someone like this get elected….
I love it that the house Republicans called her out. Assuming that she can’t be that politically ignorant, she must have known that the bill was going to fail, and she wanted to set the narrative going forward.
I’ve been following politics for quite a while now – I have never seen a pair of congressional leaders, Reid and Pelosi, so inept and so bitter. In the game of politics, they’re the practice dummies…
“Democrats believe in a free market”
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
good one, Nanny pelosi (wow, that was a typo, but I like it)
Nanny Pelosi — I like it! Good one alamedaman.
NC BLUE. You are correct. Here are some of the social-democrats’ gross money give aways and mandatory lending to people who could not possibly repay the loans they were forced to make under Clinton’s administration.
A loan is not a civil right.
Nancy Pelosi needs to be run out of DC on a rail. She should never be allowed to leave San Francisco, and should never be allowed to speak in front of a camera ever again.
San Fran Nan is an complete idiot and with any luck she will be replaced by a Republican in November.
Looks like we’re finally seeing some backbone in the House Republican leadership. DO NOT CAVE! Eric Cantor was great showing the Princess Pelosi speech during the press conference a few minutes ago.. He said it was this partisan speech that made the bill fail! Enough with the partisan democrats… Keep up the calls to your congress folks…. Copy the White House on everything you send too.. I did.
Repealing Sarbanes – Oxley would be nice too.
She should, but those who will re-elect her exhitit either stupidity or Republican derangement syndrome and no matter what she does and they will always blame Republicans for any and all problems actually created by Democrats.
One can only hope (or dream)the Dems lose the majority in the House in Nov. and she will be the FORMER speaker.
She couldn’t even get moonbats Sheila Jackson-Lee, Kilpatrcik (Kwame’s momma), and Jesse, Jr to vote FOR this. My illustrious Representative, Brad Miller voted for it. He’s a moon-batty as any of them.
Yo, Maxine “Riot” Waters…I thought Frank Raines did a bang up job, sweetie! Why’d you vote for this if there was no problem.
You’re too funny today.
I haven’t got enough minutes left in my life to spare listening to Madame Pelosi. My prayer is that voter anger rushes many of the bums out of Congress and Pelosi back to her seat in the rank and file. (I am not deluded enough to think that the nuts in SF will ever send her packing.)
for cryin out loud, would anyone ask the doctor that operated on your right leg instead of the injured left have that same doc fix the problem?… of course not…. and yet we have Republican dimwits that want to support this hag and her fellow harpies and doofuses….. Un freakin believable.
Aww, its ok, Nan’s just trying to look like she’s been cleaning house…
Meanwhile, be interesting to see how how her hubby Paul’s real estate portfolio is doing(then and now).
She is up to her eyeballs in this crap sando’s herself.
Hey Nan, take finger, point in.
Slobber mouth Barney needs to get his striped jumpsuit ready!
I agree that Bush isn’t blameless. Bush campaigned on the home ownership society or something like that if I remember correctly. However, Bush tried to reform freddie and fannie, he was blocked by Democrats. I blame him for not trying harder and being louder about it. That being said I don’t think Bush deserves ‘a lot’ of the blame. A lot of the blame goes to the liberal social engineers in Congress. The rest of it can go to Bush and the Republicans.
Predictable
Egocentric
Loud
Opportunistic
Stupid
Idiot
Iam atching the Pelosi – Fwanks show – these are the most disgusting people I have ever seen – they must be defeated if the US is to survive.
I have tried repeatedly to get through to the Speaker’s website without success. Gee- I WONDER WHY!!! The nerve of that witch!
i tried to listen, but i found her to be the most uncaptivating person, beyond stupid and full of circular speek that i had to stop listening. was there a point to her ramblings besides republicans bad and democrats good?
we need to keep hammering them, as far as i can tell main street does not want this wall street bail out.
The mouth can’t answer questions directed to her? pathetic witch.
NJ-Aviator:
not just a maroon, an Ultra-maroon!
Pelosi’s mouth still runneth over. She is laughable.
Pelosi should definitely take the blame for 95 Democrat “no” votes. When well over 1/3 of your caucus votes against your bill, you have to take some heat.
Of course, Republicans and conservatives will passively sit around and let the Dems and the MSM (but I repeat myself) write the narrative that it’s all Republican’s fault.
We should all send Nancy a tongue depresser with a note that says, “This will help scrape what you stepped in, during your House Floor speech on HR 3977, off your shoes.”
Peloser is a hag, and she has no redeeming qualities whatsoever!!! She is grossly incompetent and needs to be relieved immediately.
Dems think that everyone has the right to own a home, do they? Let them use their own damn money for it!!
Leave mine alone.
This is funny… I may actually do this.
The market was -518 when she began opening her mouth this afternoon. It is now -700. Just shut the f’n up!
this woman needs to go and she needs to take dodd and frank with her.
Cantor is blasting her, hope more do, loudly.
Thank you, God. We love you. God Bless the USA.
Hopefully, but unfortunately doubtful.
Consider also that Cindy Sheehan is running for her position. That actually frightens me more. In any other city than San Fran, I’d consider that ticket a long shot. However, considering that it is Code Pink nirvana…
::shudders::
now who is the dummy here…SanFran voters or the democrapic House that elected her Speaker ?
Does Nancy’s unfavorable rating go up or down with this vote today? Let’s see, she can’t get 95 dem votes(that’s a good thing for us, if you opposed the bill of course), on top of that she runs off 12 or 13 repubs that were committed to voting for the bill?
She’s 1 of a kind, thank god for that.
What was the point of this? My lord I got more out of listening to some folks monologue on TV then this speech.
In the aggregate, the electorate is too stupid to comprehend what a monumental disaster Pelosi & Reid are.
So it will give them Obama to work with.
Note to Osama: You didn’t need any airplanes; just let the nation elect more liberals and watch the country self-destruct.
Wouldn’t it be swell if they stopped to consider what their constituents wanted? The failure is not in the communication within the parties, but in the general disregard these people have for the people which they represent.
Despite the fact that over 100 of the countries top economists wrote them in opposition of this bill, they still felt that they know what is best for us. Hopefully people will remember this come Nov. 4.
Pelosi..
Open mouth
Insert foot
Rinse
Repeat.
Comrade Pelosky has to be the most politically ignorant person EVER to hold the speakership. Truly amazing, she’s trying to get a bipartisan garbage pile shoved down our throats, but then she attacks one of the parties! NITWIT!
Hmmm, perhaps we should THANK her?
I think RED TED has the right idea. Newt’s plan.
If they stripped out all of the extra junk in HR3977, implemented Newt’s reforms and had McCain champion the fight, we’d get a decent bill and the White House.
I may be a lone dissenter here (not on the Pelosi front…I agree she’s a partisan hyena), but I’m pretty sure there’s some government role to play in this mess. Most of us on the right are livid over “unfunded mandates,” and the mandate to create sub prime loans and mortgages for minorities, women (and eventually everyone) was really an unfunded mandate. Government ORDERED banks to eschew the solid conservative lending policies of the past and to create “opportunities” for home buyers and small businesses. These were supposed to be payed for from profits generated by an upward housing market and economy, but there was no fail safe to the mandate in case the markets did not behave in the manner that the government said they would.
So…while naked profiteering on the sub primes was certainly apparent, there is nonetheless some culpability from the government for mandating the process in the first place. Had earlier lending regulations remained in place, sub primes would not have plagued bank portfolios. Or think of it another way…not only did government create the mandate vis a vis minority borrowers, but by opening the sub prime gate, it created an “an attractive nuisance”…and everyone with a little business law knows that the creator of an attractive nuisance is liable for damages resulting from its existence.
The problem I see is that the more the Dems step in poop, the more they come out smelling like roses.
I just don’t get it.
this most ethical congress, hardest working congress, and most in tune with the middle class congress has spent the last 2 years doing nothing but ripping republicans/bush and investigating republicans/bush. even today this ditz was ripping bush and meanwhile trying to prosecute gonzales and impeach bush because they fired some democrats who were working at the whim of the president. what part of patronage jobs do these dips**ts fail to understand? when did a patronage job become an entitlement. oh that’s right under the socialist state of nancy and harry, all government jobs are for life.
How would Bush’s idea to force Americans to take care of their own retirement by investing their money in the stock market instead of counting on Social Security have been hammered by this situation?
Personal responsibility and fiscal discipline…. Damn straight.
Why wasn’t Mike Pence running for President? Can we dump McCain and get him on the ticket?
Rubber spines lead to rubber checks lead to rubber rooms.
Centralized Liberalism: death knell to liberty & prosperity everywhere it lands.
Pelosi is Italian for “incompetent fool.”
San Fran nan is living proof botox kills brain cells .
or did she tank this bill with here speech to help out BHO knowing full well the MSM will blame the gop and get her bopy a few more points in the polls .
First.. that was a “portion” of their money.
Second.. it would be mostly is less risky investments like Treasury Bills.
So…
It would be up and continuing to trend that way.
Bush’s plan was a voluntary plan, and it didn’t require 100% investment, only a small portion. I would STILL favor that any day over what we have now. Imagine the tremendous buying opportunity right now.
This is typical knee-jerk thinking on a typical liberal’s part. What about all the times the market gains significant points in one day? Of course, those don’t count, right? This is why we need economic education at the elementary school level. Adults educated in the public school system here just don’t get it. They don’t know anything about compounded interest, the stock market, financing, etc. And it clearly shows by the statement above.
If you take into account the average rate of return on the Dow, you’d be way ahead today. You don’t base the future of the Dow on one single day or week.
A Great move right now for Bush, to save any face whatsoever, would be to fire Paulson. What nincompoop will tell a president that his economy fails if a certain give away isn’t done in one week. It is irresponsible and reprehensable.
That’s because the MSM tells the people that Bush (or House Republicans) put the poop there and tricked them into stepping in it. The people are just too stupid to see the truth.
Absolutely, yet Wells Fargo stands at an all time high. What did it do right? Or did it just get the advanced word.
Thank God for Nancy ! !
She reminded everyone just why congress has such a low approval rating, why we should be very very afraid of anything she proposes. I did not fight for a socialist country but for a free one, with all its warts and glories at least I am free. If *I* am held responsible for my behaviour so should Wall Street be held for theirs. I’m willing to help but not to “buy” their mistakes. and I just heard the smart-A** remarks by Barney Frank… I have to close so I can go puke.
No agreement until we see the Democrat Perp-Walk Parade!
My message to Nancy “The Dunce” Pelosi – Find another job, if you can…you’re a miserable failure at this one! And while you’re at it, take the rest of those smart-assed know-it-alls in your People’s Democratic Party of America with you, comrade Chairman!
Yeah, letting morons get involved in the world of money has worked well so far.
As for me and mine, we VOTE NO TO SOCIALISM . I sat down with my two teenage sons and told them:
1. No matter how hard or bad it may get, I will not sell YOUR future for 700 billion pieces of silver
2. There are some good people in govt. we should support, but we will never cave on YOUR FUTURE
3. It is always better to suffer now, any price is worth it, then to give up our freedoms and accept socialism
4. You need to know that YOUR father, and lots of adults, care more about you and your future than anything else: you are our primary motivation
NO socialism is worth it, we have reached critical mass! PLEASE let your reps and etc. know that we are not wanting a handout or a bailout or more socialism, we want a limited government and a free market, even if that means we have to have temporary pain, even if that pain is worse than 1929-1939!
STAND FIRM, I am SO proud today of the American people who said, “we will not trade security for freedom, we will not give up our children’s future to avoid a present economic disaster.”
AMEN!!! (I could literally kiss all the American people who stood up to this nonsense!)
This botox-injected moron really needs to be voted out. Do any in her socialist paradise of San Francisco have any common sense?
VOTE THIS MORON OUT ALREADY!!!!
Call Pelosi and tell her what a moron she is. Don’t hold back.
202.225.0100
They’ll transfer you to her “personal line” (meaning voicemail), but it’s great therapy.
Call the minority leaders office and express your thanks/concerns.

Billcollier: I’m with you. I was near tears today thinking that I was witnessing the death of my country … but I have hope now. Thank you to all the congressmen and women who voted against this horrible bill. Thank you for believing in our Constitution. The Democrat party should immediately change its name to what it is: The Socialist Party of the United States of America.
There’s a video at Hot Air and The Jawa Report, showing several Democratic Congressmen, in 2004, denying any problem with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac.
YouTube link here.
If anyone has influence with the McCain campaign, 3 or 4 excerpts from the video need to be included in one or two national McCain TV ads.
This ad needs to come out in the next few days, to make sure that blame for the meltdown is properly placed.
So when Maxine Waters lauds Frank Raines for his outstanding job, McCain needs to remind the public that Frank made $26million for performance that has led to (how many? people losing their homes today.
When Nancy Pelosi wonders how this problem crept up on us, McCain needs to show the Democratic Congress denying the problem only 4 years ago, while the Republicans were trying to prevent it.
GET A ROPE!
i just read that pantload fairy barney frank said this is all bush’s fault for not rallying his party. that wanker caused this mess with his fannie backing and freddie pandering. now he gets out there after 90 democrats vote against the bill and this loudmouth queen blames republicans for voting this down. you libs in massachusetts deserve disgraces like kennedy and frank. you deserve the taxes these jerks bring you. same to you california for bringing us witches like nancy.
You mean instead of counting on the Social Security system that’s already broke, lol?
By the way, clearly I missed it, so can you show me where the Bush plan forces people to put their money in the stock market?
It pains me so much to know that the people who produced some of the greatest leaders in history had to produce this very poor excuse of a human being!
Italians all over the world, must be bowing their heads in shame!
Nancy, do the right thing! Apologize to the people of the USA and RESIGN!
Pelosi looks scared.
She has made promises she cannot keep to her liberal masters.
She is in danger of becoming extinct.
How far the left has fallen.
From Tip O’Neill to Nan Pelosi.
Tip O’Neill and Ronald Reagan are in Heaven having a drink together laughing at Pelosi.
Pelosi failed the test of leadership.
Instead of seeing the world as it is, she could only see it the way she wants to see it.
And that limiting view is a failure in any manager/leader.
Three questions,
One: I thought she only had a minute to speak, why’d she go on for five and a half?
Two: If you tied her hands together do you think she’d lose her ability to speak?
Three: Why have people been attacking Bush for eight years because of his “inability to speak”? His verbal stumbles are nothing compared to Nan’s.
Great twist on Kathleen “I’m a complete dunce” Parker’s attack on Sarah Palin.
Gee, I’d hate to see Nancy not be able to afford those BOTOX injections.
Imagine the sag the hag truly has!
Better yet, I’d pony up the money to Botox her tongue.
Pelosi speech highlights — “The Great Depression. I don’t know what was so great about it”. “SEVEN …. HUNDRED …. BILLION …. DOLLARS”.
It was the Democrats who allowed and encouraged the lending of $ to those who couldn’t afford it. Community Reinvestment Act. Blew off McCain and Bush when they tried to reign in Freddy and Fannie. And yet she wags her finger at Bush. No leadership.
This woman is such a partisan abomination. She lies, omits, and preens. It’s always only what’s best for her Socialist cronies, not what’s best for the country. Traitors, all of them.
Resign, Madame Speaker. And, take your three stalwart collaborators with you (Dodd, Reid, and Schumer).
