McCain will support earmark-stuffed Senate Crap Sandwich; Obama: Me, too!
I’ve been listening to his economic speech in Independence, Missouri.
He has basically echoed Nancy Pelosi’s line that opposing the bailout is unpatriotic.
Here’s what he said:
We are square in the greatest financial crisis of our lifetimes. And I am pleased to report that today, I will be returning to the floor of the Senate to vote on a bill that marks a decisive step in the right direction. The original proposal was flawed. I urged additions of taxpayer protections, stronger oversight, limitations on executive compensation and more protections for people’s bank accounts. I am pleased that these are being added to improve the original bill. It took Congress a while, and there were costs to these delays. But they have awakened to the danger. And today, with the unity that this crisis demands, Congress will once again work to restore confidence and stability to the American economy.
There will be a time to fix the blame for all that has happened — especially in the case of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the abuses and political deal-making that corrupted those institutions. But our duty right now is to fix the problem, and that is the business that will shortly take me back to Washington. Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. Now, with this measure, we have another chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.
If the financial rescue bill fails in Congress yet again, the present crisis will turn into a disaster. As credit disappears, students will no longer be able to get loans for college, and families looking for a new home will be unable to get a loan. New car sales will come to a halt. Businesses will have difficulty securing credit for operations and may be unable to pay employees. If we fail to act, the gears of our economy will grind to a halt.
This is a moment of great testing. At such moments, there are those on both sides of this debate who will act on principle. Of course, there are always some who think first of their own interests, who calculate their own advantage instead of rushing to the aid of their country. But in the case of this bill, I am confident there are enough people of good will in both parties to help see America through this crisis. And when the last vote is cast, we can be grateful to all of them — Democrats and Republicans alike — for helping to solve the crisis instead of merely exploiting it.
McCain has made his battle against earmarks the hallmark of his campaign. He couldn’t stop talking about them for the first half of the last week’s first presidential debate.
The Senate bill is stuffed with earmarks to grease its passage. I repeat:
- Film and Television Productions (Sec. 502)
- Wooden Arrows designed for use by children (Sec. 503)
- 6 page package of earmarks for litigants in the 1989 Exxon Valdez incident, Alaska (Sec. 504)Tax earmark “extenders” in the bailout bill.
- Virgin Island and Puerto Rican Rum (Section 308)
- American Samoa (Sec. 309)
- Mine Rescue Teams (Sec. 310)
- Mine Safety Equipment (Sec. 311)
- Domestic Production Activities in Puerto Rico (Sec. 312)
- Indian Tribes (Sec. 314, 315)
- Railroads (Sec. 316)
- Auto Racing Tracks (317)
- District of Columbia (Sec. 322)
- Wool Research (Sec. 325)
McCain supports them all.
Business as usual.
No earmark left behind.
***
I’m willing to be persuaded of the merits of a bill for “wool research”, or the merits of a billion-trillion-gazillion-dollar bill to save the planet from economic meltdown. But the same piece of legislation cannot plausibly contain both.
I suppose sophisticated insiders would assure me that regrettably there’s no possibility of earmark reform; this is just the price of doing business in Washington. But that’s why non-sophisticated non-insiders hold the political class in contempt. The same blowhards who run for office on a platform of lowering ocean levels and healing the planet then turn around and insist they’re unable to do anything about the one small area of human endeavor for which they bear sole responsibility.
If this is an emergency, hold the wool research. If it’s an emergency that’s got time for wool research, let’s chew it over for another few months.
***
Update 11:22am Eastern. Obama’s giving almost the same exact speech as McCain. We must act, greed and irresponsibility, can’t do nothing, we’ll protect the American taxpayer, etc., etc., etc.
Hypocrite Obama’s pouring on the class warfare rhetoric: GREED GREED GREED!
And yes, by the way, he’s still being advised by Fanniecrat Jim Johnson.

I wasn’t going to vote for him, then when he picked palin, I decided she was worth my vote, but with all the stuff he’s been doing lately, I wonder why I should even bother?
would I notice a difference between him and the messiah?
ALL McAmnesty ever feeds the American people is crap. He and Lyndsey Ghramnisty, Joe Liberalman, Dead Kennedy and the rest of the fat-cat “reach around the isle” crew share CRAP recipies at their screw America parties.
ps: do I get a prize for being the first to post in a thread?
He’s no maverick. We are doomed.
(sigh)
So how many more poll points do you think he will drop because of this?! Should we start taking bets?
Yes you do! You get a jerk for president for the next 4 years!
If McCain votes for this bill stick a fork in him, he’s done. He has been really going off on earmarks lately, while the economy is supposedly ‘crashing’. Now, he gets a golden opportunity to rail against earmarks AND go against an unpopular bailout bill, and…..he’s apparently for it. Way to go Maverick.
Aw crap! Now who do I vote for?
Grateful my arse! Democrats and Republicans alike are about to stick us with more problems than even they can think of.
Had to fix that quote too!!
mccain is doing everything he can to insure obama is elected, I guess thats what he means by bipartisanship
Fixed.
Here we go again: just when you want to vote for this guy, he pulls another fast one. Is there any common sense left anymore?
Good-bye to the condiments.
Letter to California Senators:
Senator,
I urge you to vote against the financial bail-out plan coming before you tomorrow. I believe that giving banks and institutions money for bad loans they made to people who were not qualified to purchase a bicycle much less a home will do nothing but breed more of this kind of behavior.
Also, lumping in a ton of earmarks simply smacks the people in the face. Those of us who were (and are) unable to purchase a home during the boom times, and those who work hard and diligently paid their mortgages on time should not have to bear the burden for speculators and fools.
What does it take to get the Congress and Senate of the United States to understand that the money you are spending doesn’t belong to you. Those of us who work every day, are frugal and pay our taxes on time and in full are getting pretty fed up with with the way our money is getting pissed away on useless projects.
Stop spending so much of our money. Pay off the deficit. Lower our taxes. Quit feeding at the trough as if our taxes were your own ATM.
We’re fed up with this. The last straw has been placed on the camels’ back. What we’re seeing is truly taxation without representation or responsibility.
Get a clue and vote this nonsense down…..
Either McCain or Obama will be the next President. Period. No other result is plausable.
Although the two candidates may hold nearly identical, equally offensive positions there is one important difference: whom they’d pick for the Supreme Court.
That makes McCain, if you’ll pardon the cliche’, the lesser of two evils. That’s why you should vote for him.
No more LOTE.
Good-bye to the condiments.
I don’t mean to be arcane.
McCain was right about one thing. He really isn’t up to par about economics.
McCain, vote for this mess and you’ve lost me and my family. I love Palin but to hell with you.
Blah blah blah, blah blah yada yada yada, wha wha wha blah blah!
Vote for Me!
Is this what it sounds like? I’m getting more discourged by the minute.
Laura ingraham just had a story on the democrats that bush has been nominating to the court…sad.
this has been a topsy turvy election cycle..
I was not planning on voting for McCain until he picked Palin.. Then I was behind him..
and it’s been a bumpy ride since..
every time I get my mind made up to vote for McCain, he does something like this that makes me pause..
I am just shaking my head, frankly I am speechless. I balance my checkbook, pay my mortgage and bills and live below my means. My tax dollars go to crap, I cannot benefit from anything because I make too much money. I worked my ass off to get where I am and for what?
451 pages of pork now. I had assumed they were going to cut down and clean up the House bill, not make a monster pork bill instead.
He’s a puppet to La Raza, what would you expect?
I wish these people would consider Dave Ramsey’s Common Sense Fix alternative. It wouldn’t cost them to see if it’s viable. Anything is better than this foreign bank supporting, pork barrel, earmarked piece of legislation.
Sigh. Maybe Palin should withdraw, disavow McCain and just prepare to run for Pres herself in 2012. Just being around McCain is tainting her conservative creds.
Palin/Jindal 2012! Because by actions like this, it ain’t gonna be McCain/Palin’08. Why vote for a a closet socialist when you can vote for the real thing.
Unless someone tells me otherwise, the major reason the economy is weak is that Freddie Mac/FannieMae supporters and managers have been caught with their lies and thievery. But, I also believe that wall street and all the financial giants are holding back credit because they smell a give away. I contend that left to their own devices, they could as easily see they ain’t gettin’ nuttin’…. and go about business as usual. I know too many people who are business owners and investors who are are salivating at a giveaway. Don’t do it, Congress, you bunch of cowardly whores.
If McCain tolerates earmarks now on what could be the most important bill in many years, then he can’t use earmarks as a campaign issue ever again.
If McCain tolerates a socialist agenda for our financial system, what’s next?
Perhaps Andropov for a cabinet position?
I’m back to just voting against Obama. Looking forward to 2012.
How depressing.
Yes.. because McCain has such a record of working across the isle..
I’m sure he’ll pick a nominee for the Supreme Court with a solid conservative record..

To pay the bum that wanted hand outs and received them taking the easy road. I’m like you and damned Pissed about it!!!!
I’m going to write in the only voice of reason that I’ve heard all year. Ron Paul. And don’t give me that crap about how only fruitcakes support Ron Paul. Frankly, they’re all surrounded by fruitcakes!
Guys – face it. It’s over. Obama’s going to win this thing and we conservatives had better start shoring up the fortresses for the assault on our freedoms that’s certain to mark the next 4-8 years…
Hate to be a pessimist, but I can’t see any other way. The media’s in the bag for O, so is half this stupid, stupid nation. We’ll get the corrupt, socialist leadership we deserve.
sad but true…but after 4 years of the new bi-racial messiah *can you dig it*…will our elections just end up like venezualan elections?
(double sigh)
MM would be realllllly nice if you posted what obambi thinks will do etc
fair and balanced por favor mi amiga
you’re right, but I think the gig is up, we become the USSA…better start learning to love Big Bro Obama…
I wil be DAMNED b4 I sit here and trash McCain.
screw all of you
If McCain had come out against this pig of a bailout, he would have created as much excitment as choosing Palin for VP. As it is, he’s toast and we’re screwed!
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Whether to sigh in defeat or throw a brick through my TV. This is more frustrating than a Broncos game (’cause when the Broncos crap out it doesn’t cost me thousands of dollars).
At least now I no longer have to hold my nose and vote for McCain. I look forward to casting a blank ballot (since “none of the above” won’t be on there).
Bob Barr wouldn’t support it. He’d veto it. So would Ron Paul.
For everyone lamenting about a lack of conservative principles, there sure seems to be a lot of resistance to voting for a conservative: Ron Paul and/or Bob Barr.
Put your vote where your alleged principles are and vote for either Paul or Barr. These are men who are Constitutionalists and who are in favor of limited government…and their votes demonstrate it.
That’s the scary thing, after 4 years of the Obummer and complete Democratic control of congress, Fairness Act, open borders and amnesty rushed through, the Republican party and conservatism will be dead.
In a crises a person’s true colors come out. McCain, we now know who you are.
Yes, you will be damned. Damned to vote for just another big-government liberal. Damned to live in a country where even the “conservative” presidential candidate sees a major government role in absolutely everything. Damned to pay ever higher taxes. Damned to pledge your allegiance to a political party that doesn’t give two shakes about you.
Obama just said that he will stop global warming when he’s president. Of course he thinks he can. After all, Christ calmed the stormy seas with the wave of his hand and a spoken command. He, who thinks he’s the new “savior”, can repair the whole earth.
I’m expecting these disciples of Obama’s to break out in song, “He’s got the whole world in his hands”!
We get the government we deserve.
Pray for a miracle.
He’s doing a pretty good job of it himself without our help.
If we can hammer him for his errors and get through to his stubborn thick headedness, maybe the election maybe saved, however difficult McCain makes it for himself and us.
The election needs to be called off.Save all the heart ache and money. With the entire MSM in the crapper for BHO, McCain should just get it over with and hand it over. There will be millions of illegal votes counted anyway. Our elections are third world now so why go through the pain.We ate soup for 2 weeks because of Ike and it kind of grows on you.I’m just going to hate to stand in lines to get it.
And that is exactly why we’re going to lose.
But, didn’t you know: McCarbonTax will appoint Conservative Judges for SCOTUS?
Not in the tradition of Alito or Thomas… they’re “crazy rightwing”, don’tchaknow…
He’s more of the Kennedy/Ginsburg brand of conservatism. Simply listen to his simpering praise for Ginsburg, (it is on utube google it), to see how he thinks.
We’re going Socialist, me Buckos! Avast there! Drop those lines to right the Ship-of-State!
Call/email/fax/telegram your feelings about our conversion to a Socialist economic structure.
Do they still deliver telegrams, or just mail them? Because of anthrax mail to our elected offals[sic], snail mail is held for (I think) 2 weeks. It will be well over by time they get our letters. I find it just too convienient that Congress’ phones & email are suddenly throttled down.
Since I don’t really believe that the bulk of Congress is actually stupid, they know Dodd’s & Fwank’s perfidity. That they are then going to put these same people in-charge tells me they are jake with what was done. You don’t put the crook in charge of restitution, unless you want him to enrich himself further.
And if I hear Limbaugh say: ‘about Pres. Bush, he feels that to weigh-in would sully the office…’ — yeah, defending the Constitution and the Chief Exec office from predation sullies the office. Sure.
This bill, passed in this fashion is unconstitutional! Wall Street was on its way up — until they heard only cosmetic changes were made.
If McCain is such a Maverick, why doesn’t he do what is right, not expedient.
The very worst of this is McC’s poisoning the well. Palin will be tarred with this, and not be electable. Conservatism, too.
Just as Dad said. Spooky how he figured it out.
Ok McKneecapTheConstitution bots, start your flamin’!
Well Obama said he will be POTUS of the 58 states for 10 years!
At least we’ll be better informed on the benefits of wool.
/sarc off
No Dispute, I’m writing in Newt.
hawkeye 54, we already are like venezuela with busloads of people arriving in ohio and swearing they are residents and voting there and then. wisconsin and washington have even more fraudulent systems with there mail in units. now republicans (light) like bush and mccain support a bailout using taxpayer money of foreign investors. my investment in brazil, russia, india, and china (bric) mutual fund is off by 50% and i haven’t heard a peep from any of those governments seeking to reimburse me for my stupidity. yet paulson thinks that is the taxpayer of america’s duty. CRIMINAL.
Climate change is the next big boondoggle from the left. Does Obama actually think he can stop global warming? I don’t know. I don’t think he really cares. Does he think he can give billions of dollars to his political allies in the name of ‘environmental justice’? You bet. That’s all this is about. Get used to that term, you’ll be hearing it a lot in the near future I bet.
Dear U. S. Senators:
Shame on you for assuming that American voters are as stupid as you appear to be!! Do you really believe that your lame and obnoxious attempts to make this bill appear more palatable to your constituencies are going to work? Do you think that we don’t know exactly what you’re doing?
We soldiers have a term for what you are attempting to do with this bailout travesty. It is called “polishing a turd.” No matter how much effort you put into trying to make it look good, in the end you just end up covered in excrement.
I call on all Americans to oppose this insult to our intelligence in the strongest manner possible. Call the offices of your Senators (you can find their numbers here) and raise hell. This atrocious behavior by our elected officials cannot be allowed to stand.
God Bless America!!
englishqueen
I share you’re disdain for this situation. I am sensing a truthful feeling of confrontation I haven’t felt since I was in combat. I know that many here will treat my comment as the foolishness of a 58 year old warmonger. But it isn’t that simple and that’s why I’m getting slowly angry.
Michelle reported this in the order in which statements from the candidates were released. She has already updated this post with Obama’s comments. We all knew where Obama stood on this, but McCain’s stance was the mystery.
No one is asking you to trash Sen. McCain.
However, it is clear from this that Sen. McCain does not understand and is willing to trash conservative economic principles and has become a hypocrite on the subject of earmarks.
Refusing to deal with the source of this problem now, extending the power of government over the market, and throwing our money at the situation in order to address the symptom does not demonstrate to understand long-term planning.
We can be angry with Sen. McCain and still vote for him over Sen. Obama. However, to turn a blind eye to this would also be foolish. He needs to hear from the American people and understand clearly that the conservative base is not happy with this course.
400+ notable economists have weighed in against this bill. Whom has McCain consulted that told him this would be a good idea?
Who is advising this guy – the muppets?
He could win in a landslide. All he has to do is separate himself from Obama & call Obama out on his faults.
It isn’t personal – it’s business.
LA Raza.
#50orrection there should be their. but in the euphoria of this bailout i intend to liquidate my holdings and move them to offshore accounts where they will be better protected than here. my government has lost it’s fing mind.
MNUSMCDavid I truly understand.
Remember the expression, “There are always that 2% that never gets the word?”
That describes my two U.S. Senators. They cannot put one coherent thought together. How could they read with comprehension anything I may write to them? You just want to pound your head into the table.
Well, it’s either jump off the bridge time or go grap your pitchforks and firebrands and take to the streets.
I realize something needs to be done because our Democrats have ginned up a world crisis in their headlong plunge towards full-on statist Marxism. But to slather on more and more of the same poison is just too much for mere humans to take. Where are todays Jeffersons and Lincolns?
And California, where I live, is already an annex of Mexico. President Obummer and the
DemocratSoviet Socialist controlled Congress will just seal the deal.Hello
UnitedUnion of Socialist States of Amerika!McCain will not point out his opponents character failures. He just won’t do it. “There will be plenty of time to lay blame when we get this crisis behind us”, and then he barely brushed on the Dems overruling his SB in 2005 that would have added oversight to Fannie/Freddie.
He can’t speak up for himself and he can’t speak down of his opponent.
He can’t win if he’s unwilling to do either, so he sure as he** can’t win against the trash-talking, lying sack of crap, Obama.
I’m praying for The Return of Jesus, the sooner, the better.
fixed if for ya…its the WRIGHT way to spell it…
Amen to that.
O.M.G. I am actually scanning through the crap sandwich/bill and I am in total shock.
1. It gives too much authority to one person. Too much room for corruption. Hell, if I had control of that much money, I’d become corrupted too. There’s no way around it!
2. WTF is all that energy stuff in that bill? Why is it there? Do you realize there’s something in there about truckers that leave their engines on and idling while they’re stationary for a certain period of time. WHY IS THAT STUFF IN THERE?
I’m not even half-way through it yet!
What have we done? We’ve done this. You and I. We’ve turned our backs thinking that the government was in good hands and we have been screwed. More and more of us are now realizing it, but I don’t think the politicans realize yet how many of us are waking up. But it will be too little and too late to save us from this. If the Senate has the balls to put that kind of crap together in a bill so publicly scrutinized, then what’s been in all the other bills? We are screwed. We are on the edge of the abyss and we’re going over. I don’t want to sound overly dramatic and I don’t think I am.
I would have thought that McCain would have been the one to say “no f’ing way,” but I guess not. If he passes this, he’s lost. Election over. He will continue his death spiral in the polls and it will be his own fault for being so out-of-touch. Apparently he is like the rest of them. He can’t “out-lib” a liberal and his conservative base will turn on him completely. I’m just sorry Sarah Palin got on board with him.
I’m just sorry Sarah Palin got on board with him.
I know what you mean. Back when the talk was Gov. Jindal from LA, I pleaded with God that McCain not pick him so that he would not be tainted with a losing ticket.
I never imagined he would select Sarah Palin even when Hannity and others spoke of her. When he did I thought great, there’s hope.
Well, that’s gone now and I wish that she hadn’t been associated with him. He’s done, we’re done and it will be a long time before conservatism rebounds.
John McCain by endorsing this taxpayer ripoff has just blown his chances for being truly different from Obama, and
I predict will lose -by his own hand- the election.
He is no reformer. The only reform he got passed was stuff democrats could use to cudgel conservatives with..the reform and courage we need he does not have-unless he just miraculously does not vote for this bailout
AS for this hurting Sarah Palin, I don’t agree..McCain picked her to shut us pygmies up. What she needs to do for her future beyond Alaska politics, is be herself in contravention of McCain where necessary to maintain her conservative credibility-especially on debate night.
Way to go McCain, you just lost an independent voter. The quality of McCains’ opponent is about at the McGovern, Dukakis level. This campaign should have been over a month ago. Good news for Sarah Palin, she can go back to being governor of Alaska. The VP job doesn’t deserve her.
…and then you can proudly tell your friends that at least YOU didn’t vote for President Obama!
Looks as if we Europeans get our very own c**p sandwich as well: According to media reports, the French government is calling for a 300-Billion-Euro bailout of banks and investment firms in Europe. They are suggesting that all EU member states contribute to the bailout with a whopping 3 percent of their GDP. Sweet!

As for the idea he really is going to pick conservative judges once he is inside the tent… well this emoticon expresses my current thoughts

I completely agree, she needs to start thinking about her own future. Also, if she is 1/2 the politician a lot of us thought she was, she will be just fine, no matter what happens in November.
I hope she attacks Biden in full pit bull mode no matter what McCain’s handlers tell her to do.
Unfortunately this appears to be the case englishqueen. i think Dick morris is probablly pounding his head agianst the wall with McCain’s bad campaign (and political) choices.
For us it is time to work to put in good conservative choices for congress for at least the next 4-8 years, and batten down the hatches.
I called my Sens just now in MN but I expect little to nothing. I’m going to fight dirty and get in their faces. If Obammy’s people can… I will, too

I keep hearing that the one defining difference and the reason to vote for McCain is the judges.
Would someone please show me the basis of that conviction?
I could be wrong but I think he was involved in one of those “Gang of___” things opposing Bush’s appointments
He’ll continue to not only reach across the aisle but move his whole, sorry a** over there for the sake of bipartisanship,
Turn off the oven. He’s done.
And so are we.
I feel like I’m trapped inside a utopian novel just waiting for the goon squad to capture me for the re-education facility.
That’s what I’m starting to think. I was strongly against McCain at first. With Palin, I was suddenly encouraged and I looked forward to voting. But then, McCain reminded me exactly who is in control of the ticket… and he doesn’t look pretty.
If this is how the Maverick will act in office, I just can’t vote for McCain… no matter how good Palin looks!
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/soros-floats-alternative-bailout-plan-with-dems-2008-09-30.html
Hey McCain, remember what you told a fellow republican during your amnesty push? Well right back at you John, “Go Fu@k yourself”, eat this crap sandwich without me my friend!
“but, but, but, they won’t win!”
Like McCain would be a win? Seems more like a booby prize.
Jesus – is he trying to hand the election to Obama with this bill?
McCain is spouting that “bi-partisanship is hard.” What a load! Here is what bi-partisanship means to the two parties:
Republicans: Having to abandon their ideals and principles (tried and true) in order to placate socialist liberal Democrats. Essentially, it means abandoning their spines and becoming plankton.
Democrats: Demanding that Republicans to join THEM in whatever socialist liberalism that they dictate. They will NEVER abandon their ideals and unprincipled agendas in order to be “bi-partisan” with Republicans.
McCain makes my ears bleed everytime he spews this BS about bi-partisanship rubbish. Hell, I’d rather have Ron Paul up there talking about all of this instead of the spineless bildge I’m hearing from McCain.
We’re simply doomed. These fools and idiots are going to lead us all to utter ruin!
As much as I’d like to believe that McCain’s picks for SCOTUS would be acceptable – McCain doesn’t seem to be giving me any assurances of that by his actions.
I know Obama’s picks will be unacceptable though.
With one – 100% assurance they will be bad, with the other – 50/50 they will be bad.
Not good odds.
LOL!
I used to volunteer at a thrift store, and one of the first lessons I learned was that there is essentially no market for 99% of used books. It makes more sense to give them an alternative fuel credut for book donations.
Talk about conservatism lost. If even half of the bills/laws are enacted by the dems, they will never be repealed. Has anyone ever heard of a government handout being recinded. If you speak against it you’re racist, you’re mean spirited, you’re against feeding the children, ad nauseum…
they’ll make it simple for you…get your mark…..or you’ll be a head shorter…
Pass the word, far and wide -
Write in PALIN for president.
It’s our ONLY hope.
Again – he never, ever brings anybody back across the aisle!
If bi-partisianship only means that Wall Street gets as much cash as Acorn, I have to admit that I am against it.
I’m votin’ for Palin, and whatever baggage she brings with her can be dealt with later. Frustrating!
Write ins don’t count in most states unless they register as such.
Better to vote third party. Barr and Baldwin are the real conservatives.
