Palin-basher Sandra Bernhard loses gig over gang-rape joke

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 1, 2008 04:25 PM

Lesson for “comedian” Sandra Bernhard:

If you joke about Palin being gang-raped by black men, you might turn off even your most ardent supporters.

Actions have consequences, via Life News:

Comedian Sandra Bernhard has lost her slot as a keynote speaker for a women’s shelter in Massachusetts after attacking vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin on abortion. In a monologue criticizing the Alaska governor, Bernhard made crude comments about rape that cost her the gig.

The comments came in a one-woman stand up show Bernhard did last month in Washington, D.C.. During the event, Bernhard said Palin would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” and the comments came in a diatribe against Palin’s pro-life views.

Bernhard was supposed to be a featured speaker at the October 16 event “Funny Women … Serious Business” put on by the Boston-based Rosie’s Place, a domestic violence shelter for women.

Public relations director Leemarie Mosca told AP about the cancellation and said the comments were offensive to many of the victims the shelter helps as well as its staff and volunteers.

“In light of our mission, we don’t think violence against women is a laughing matter,” she said.

Bernhard whining about “Stalinist” stifling of “dissent” in 3, 2, 1…

Cities have NOTHING to do with this. Its poor billing management on the part of the hospitals.

I have had several billings from hospitals and doctors that went sideways.

My understanding regarding the rape kit fees is that if the victim presses charges, then the State will pick up the fees. If not, then the victim pays (if she is indeed a victim).

Just recently in my town, a young woman claimed to have been raped. She was taken to the hospital and a rape kit was used. The police were all involved and a description of the attacker was released. A few days later, the “victim” recanted, saying that she had not been raped, but made up the story so her parents wouldn’t be angry for her coming home way past her curfew. She was out partying and had consensual sex with a peer.

So, who should pick up the bill in this case?

The governor signed House Bill 270, sponsored by Rep. Eric Croft, D-Anchorage, outside the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) exam room at Alaska Regional Hospital. In attendance at the signing were members of victims advocate groups, law enforcement agencies and legislators.

The new law makes it illegal for any law enforcement agency to bill victims or victims insurance companies for the costs of examinations that take place to collect evidence of a sexual assault or determine if a sexual assault did occur.

While the Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies have covered the cost of exams, which cost between $300 to $1,200 apiece, the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests.

And does it matter if a person was charged for a rape kit, or does it matter that the policy existed at all. To me the policy would be the issue, but lose yourself in nonsense if you’d like.

The Globe writes, “The policy so outraged the Alaska Legislature that in 2000 it passed unanimously a bill forbidding such fees.” As discussed earlier, in six separate hearings on the legislation, Wasilla was never mentioned. Other, much larger jurisdictions like Juneau were mentioned as places where victims were being charged. During those hearings, the deputy commissioner of Alaska’s Department of Public Safety testified that he had never found a police agency that had billed a victim.

I think there’s a distinction wherein we part, MsJustice. When hatred is the “comedic” M.O. it only plays to the “haters”, as it did in this case. It’s would be the same as Aryan Supremist “comics” telling “jokes” about black folks and Jews.

Bruce wasn’t all that funny, to be honest. By the time he ODed his “comedy routine” consisted of reading boring court transcripts. You mention his name to most folks and you get a blank stare – Lenny Who? Kravitz, maybe? The guy with “Squiggy”??

Carlin, OTOH, (who was a fan of Bruce) was able to take everyday life and things that folks are familiar with and make people laugh. “Where are the good scissors?”. Though he took off on politicians he never went frothing-spitting-psycho crazy ala Olbermann.

Where I think we disagree is that comedy can be brutal and honest, but I’d say never hate-filled or hate-driven. In fact, I’d apply the term “detached” to good comedy.

South Park is rarely humorous, after a dozen wink-nod cool-kid jokes about passing gas, the novelty of being “edgy” wears off fast. Even then we are talkin’ about PC (i.e. liberal) edgy, which means that while imagery of a defecating Jesus Christ is considered daring haute comédie, depicting Mohammed in the same way is absolutely verbotten and subject to intense self-censorship.

And for some reason, I just need to point out I managed to slip two foreign terms in the above last, elongated sentence. Furðulegur, eh what? :)

Maybe mistressjustice can enlighten us as to how a woman wishing gang-rape on another can ever be “funny”.

I’m not a comic, but I’m sure that somebody with great skills could make the topic funny.
Sam Kinison has made me laugh about a true story featuring sex with a dead corpse. South Park has made me laugh about topics such as the selling of aborted fetuses and child molestation. These topics are horrific, but they can be joked about in a funny way. Anything can be done in a funny way, but my sense of humor likely differs from yours.

How many times do we have to explain it? The First Amendment has NOTHING to do with issues of private employment. NOTHING. The First Amendment freedom of speech pertains only to the government not being able to punish free speech.

Bernhard could have said “I love Sarah Palin” and her hosts could have legally fired her for THAT, too.

The government can’t censor Bernhard’s speech, and nor could it force this organization to book her. I don’t disagree with your statement in anyway, on this issue, but the distinction isn’t always obvious. Perhaps my initial post was broad and unfocused, but I’m just stating that both sides are exercising their rights.

Well done on the sarcasm. I just found out that rape victims all over the country have to pay for rape kits

What sarcasm? You posed an totally emotion-based “question” based on nothing.

    NDgal simply asked for names:
“Who paid for a rape kit? Names and sources for this accusation please.”

You haven’t delivered on that account, Silky. It would be the same as if you asked: “What are we going to do about all the pygmies who are suddenly turning into ripe bananas??”.

What you did offer was an old MSN-NBC link (insert eye roll here), which, if correct would seem to show this is a 50-state practice, including Illinois. The question then is – “Why does Senator Obama insist that his state charge victims for rape-kits?”. If someone chooses to play ganes with words, it works both ways.

Had the question been posed “Why are Americans being victimized by illegal aliens?” and you were to ask “What Americans?’, you would not lack for an answer due a dearth of specific who, what, when, where and why ( sans political feelings, just the facts).

That’s where you failed on the question tossed your way by NDgal asking for names. I’m not raggin’ on you here, more like just sayin’ you can always find some web-link for a cover-all political attack. Specifics are a whole ‘nother animal, tho.

And even if a person can come up with a specific – no matter the topic – there’s almost always a partisan motive-story behind it. Just so much grinding of the axes – politics as usual, y’know.

Someone close to me was raped and the Police (who were terrific) told her they get many cases of false accusations (more than actual rapes). Those kinds of laws (which are in many jurisdictions nationwide) are probably designed to help deter false accusations. No one to date has been able to show that Wasilla charged any victims, but the false accusation keeps getting bandied about. It’s not a laughing matter, but some dishonest people on the left are using the heinousness of the crime to attack Palin.

I never want Sandra the moron to be the victim, but if she had been, I can assure you she wouldn’t be talking this way. Can I rinse and spit now?

Good on Rosie’s Place! It’s been a beacon for abused women in the Boston area for many years now – someday, God willing, the need for such places will disappear.

If I may so boldly interject… (ahem, cough)

    Cant prove it….

Proof is for mathematicians and TV court dramas. I can make a basic case for the position, as follows:

The Bill of Rights are statements about matters the federal government can’t do or interfere in, and must leave alone They have no application to private action.

The First Amendment says “Congress” shall make no laws abridging the freedom of speech or the press.

Originally states could abridge free speech, and some did.

But during the last half of the nineteenth century the courts applied the Bill of Rights to the states via the 14th Amendment.

From then on, the states couldn’t abridge free speech either.

But private action ain’t state action.

If your boss thinks the Palin tatto across your forehead is inappropriate he can tell you to clean out your desk and go home. You cannot assert free speech rights to keep your job, nor can you remove the tattoo and demand your job back.

If you can find a case where private party A successfully sued under the 1st amendment for having his free speech rights abridged by private party B, we would like to see the case, and how it has been applied.

Clue: libel and slander are civil actions not protected by the First Amendment. The assclowns in Missouri who tried to invoke “criminal libel” statutes to frighten Obama foes were talking from orifices generally capable of only limited communication (excepting, I suppose, well-timed squeezes that might communicate quite a lot)

As long as the left continues to court Islam, there will always be a need for these places. Islam, which violently supports the oppression of women would love to close these places down. I still do not understand why the left, who supposedly supports women’s rights consistently downplays the fight against terrorism, which is ultimately the fight against Islam. Liberalism is an ultimate suicide.

Yes, and conservative and religious groups that have for many years now been on the front lines in the fight to improve the lives of women in Islamic countries (and elsewhere) are derided as repressive (or worse).

    It boggles the mind.
