The Senate votes: Crap Sandwich 2.0 with sugar on top passes 74-25

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 1, 2008 09:10 PM

Scroll for updates…roll call vote added…

The vote is underway.

Will they spit or swallow the Crap Sandwich?

Stand by for the tally…

At 9:16pm Eastern, C-SPAN counts 54 Yeas, 18 Nays.

At 9:18pm Eastern, it’s 65 Y, 19 N.

The Nays include Bunning, Barrasso, Dole, DeMint, Allard, Sanders, Sessions, Shelby, Stabenow, Wyden, Vitter, Tester, Nelson (Fla.), Roberts…

The Senate swallows.

Official announcement:

The Yeas are 74 and Nays are 25.

Back to the House.

Redouble those phone calls and faxes.

9:21pm Eastern. Harry Reid is patting himself on the back.

Sugar on top of the Crap Sandwich:

After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, winning lopsided passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House, where Republicans opposition softened.

Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25, a month before the presidential and congressional elections.

9:45pm Eastern. The “Dodd amendment” — the crap sandwich — having passed, the Senate now just also voted 74-25 to pass it as an attachment to the mental health parity legislation.

The Beltway talking point is now that opposition in the House has softened and that public opposition is softening, too.

Kindly disabuse Washington of that notion: 202-224-3121.

***

Roll call vote is not up yet on the Senate website. There were 25 bailout busters (15 Republicans, 10 Democrats).

I’m torn by all of this because I realize the trouble that our banks are in and how they’re all interlinked. I do believe only the Federal Government can hold these mortgage-backed securities long enough for them to mature.

On the other hand, people who take unnecessary risk in business deserve to fail. If you guess right, you’re rewarded. If you guess wrong, tough luck. That’s why it’s called “risk”. At 30-to-1 leveraged ratios, that’s some piss-poor investing.

But you can’t let the banks fail… Period.

That means those mark-to-market valued securities, which are worth nothing after the previous bank failures last week (but which do actually hold considerable value) need to be removed from the banking system. Or the regulations governing their valuation need to be changed. Something.

But. You. Can’t. Let. The. Banks. Fail.

Well, I’m sorry we’re at this pass.
I have vowed to vote against whom ever voted for this Socialist’s Dream.

I think I called it weeks ago. McCain was scraping by without changing his position on immigration. He cant sustain going against those who are not in the GOP base. Palin was just a conservative blip in the road.

When this bill goes through, the GOP is about to hand over complete power in the Executive and Legislative branches of the government. I hope Im wrong.

I was trying to find that information myself, thanks for posting it. Not cool. Let’s hope the House members keep their sense.

Just change the mark-to-market. That doesn’t cost taxpayers $700 Billion dollars.

Sorry hun, but there were ways they could have ensured that banks didn’t fail without voting for welfare for piss-poor judgment. Gingrich had great ideas, and so did several others.

Doesn’t matter anymore anyway. We’re screwed.

Yeah, I wonder how much our health insurance will go up when the health insurance is FORCED to cover mental health. My husband is self insured and we pay for our own health insurance. We have an HSA and a high deductible policy.

But. You. Can’t. Let. The. Banks. Fail.

    No. Bank. Has. Failed.

This is just a way for those in Congress to protect the “earnings” from the illegal activities they have been involved with. Fannie Mae. Freddie Mac. AIG. Lehman. ACORN. Greenlining. All of these organizations traded in false investments from people who could not afford to pay for housing, based on the fact that the housing market was being artificially propelled by more ineligibles buying their $50,000 home for $500,000. It was all vapor, and it caught up to them. And the Congressional members watched as the money they earned stole from the American taxpayer disappeared with the vapor.

Now they have colluded to steal an additional $700 Billion, which will quickly become several Trillions.

Here’s the facts: Every bank that has “folded” was fully insured. Nobody lost anything. The banks were capitalized by another firm immediately. Nobody is dying. It’s all scare tactics, because this scam wouldn’t work any other way…

    …And we just blinked.

I agree that calling the local offices has a better impact.

I also called Pelosi’s DC office and told her that I was inspired to volunteer and campaign for the challenger to the Democratic incumbent here. The only way Washington is going to get a message is if they are all voted out.

Don’t forget to call the Campaign HQ’s as well and explain why you’re NOT donating.

I can’t believe the Republicans are so stupid. When will they learn? Democrats are NOT YOUR FRIENDS. They only use you as cover for their machinations against US interests. Then when the people scream murder, they point to you. Hey, notice they were calling this Bush’s bill and attacking it and supporting it earnestly at the same time.

Forget about me. I’m conservative, but Republican no longer. Sell outs I despise more than enemies. You know where you stand with enemies.

It may be time for Texas and Alaska to look at seceding. If they go, then they own the North Shore and Houston (they can have California). I believe that would be most (or a significant share) of the petro and petrochemical production capabilities of North America.
