The Senate votes: Crap Sandwich 2.0 with sugar on top passes 74-25
Scroll for updates…roll call vote added…
The vote is underway.
Will they spit or swallow the Crap Sandwich?
Stand by for the tally…
At 9:16pm Eastern, C-SPAN counts 54 Yeas, 18 Nays.
At 9:18pm Eastern, it’s 65 Y, 19 N.
The Nays include Bunning, Barrasso, Dole, DeMint, Allard, Sanders, Sessions, Shelby, Stabenow, Wyden, Vitter, Tester, Nelson (Fla.), Roberts…
The Senate swallows.
Official announcement:
The Yeas are 74 and Nays are 25.
Back to the House.
Redouble those phone calls and faxes.
9:21pm Eastern. Harry Reid is patting himself on the back.
Sugar on top of the Crap Sandwich:
After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, winning lopsided passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House, where Republicans opposition softened.
Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25, a month before the presidential and congressional elections.
9:45pm Eastern. The “Dodd amendment” — the crap sandwich — having passed, the Senate now just also voted 74-25 to pass it as an attachment to the mental health parity legislation.
The Beltway talking point is now that opposition in the House has softened and that public opposition is softening, too.
Kindly disabuse Washington of that notion: 202-224-3121.

Roll call vote is not up yet on the Senate website. There were 25 bailout busters (15 Republicans, 10 Democrats).

I already know how this is going to play out…..
fox is saying 65 yeas on the leaders count….
bombard your house reps in 3….2….1.
Wrong orifice
Is there condiments with that crap sandwich?
I think it’s going to pass.
Ick. Bad visual, Michelle.
Did I just hear that Tom Coburn voted YES?!? I wish him nothing but the worst from here on out.
Gordon Smith will lose his reelection bid if I have anything to do with it; he is supposed to be a Republican.
My girl, Elizabeth Dole, voted NO. Good for her! Her office said they were flooded with calls–90% against the bailout. At least she listened to her constituents.
Biden voted “no” before changing his vote to “yes”
TOM COBURN VOTED YES????
61 vote Yes.
We need to kill it again in the House. Do NOT call the DC office- find the member’s home page and call the local district office-you’ll get through and it has more impact.
Let me know how Schumer votes. Lol.
That was the vote for the “Dodd Amendment”…. What the hell is the Dodd Amendment?
bipartisan = giving up.
puke.
AMEN! After I called the local office, my Rep’s brother came by my house! My Rep, by the way, is voting NO. Those phone calls can make a difference. Please keep calling!
Why don’t we try sending faxes saying
“Since you are sending all my $$$$ to Wall Street I guess I won’t have any left for your campaign. Sorry!!”
Maybe that will get someone’s attention?
Guess I should start learning the old Soviet national anthem, since 74 Senators just said “Socialism? Sure, but what’s in it for me?”
Velkom Kommrads!
Sweet Gherkins…
I am so sick of these people.
I guess the background music should be Weird Al’s parody of the M. Jackson hit Beat It: Eat It.
Someone, perhaps several should hang if this bill passes.
So do we tell McCain now just how bad he just screwed up on this vote, or do we wait until Nov 3rd?
I’m guessing Warner (VA) voted for this. Unfortunatley, the RINO trash is retiring this year, so I can’t take it out on him at the ballot box.
Fortunately, I can still take it out on McCain.
Roll call, please. I want names.
optiksguy #17 – that is great idea. It worked for the shamesty vote. Tell the NRCC why you cannot contribute and anything else on your mind. If we can’t win, at least we can go down fighting!
I’m never going to get dinner done tonight.
Who are you looking for, Four String?
74 – 25 was for the Dodd Amendment to the bill. Final passage is being voted on right now.
it is truly a sad day for “we the people”…we no longer count nor do our wishes…I choose not to swallow nor bend over…it’s high time for yet another tea party…
Thus the Senate has make the chains so that we can be slaves to the State. There is no property that cannot be seized. There are no right that cannot be arbitrated at the whim of the State. There are no limits to the power of the State. We are to work in the fields and live on the chaff left on fields after the harvest.
Hard to believe that BOTH Texans, Cornyn and Hutchison, supported this chicanery… and after my calls and emails too.
Elizabeth Dole just sealed her victory for re-election. I warned Burr (R-NC) to vote NO or I would work to unseat him. I plan to keep my promise.
I called my TN senaters Not sure yet how they voted.
Prepare to be ruled by commisar Obama and the new Bolsheviks. This once great nation had a good but short run.
WA. I could look it up but I’m walking home and my old n slow BB would probably freeze up!
House to vote on Friday… 105 billion in earmarks.. if they vote this in after voting the original bill out, then I’d imagine there’s a lot of kickbacks..
Time to practice. I figure the 1977 version is best for us to learn. I pulled the version that wasn’t in Cyrillic. Have it memorized by tomorrow, or it will be the camps for you
How did McCain vote?
Murray and Cantwell both Yes
McCain voted Yes
I just counted 73 votes in the latest roll call they just took… Was that for the Bailout Bill? If so,it just passed the Senate!
Bill has been passed. Michelle, can we get a final tally? I know that my two senators have voted YEA. Shrillary and Chucky Schmucky Schumer. The best that the effete and elite downstaters and urbanites of NY could hope for. Feel the love, congress critters…..grrrrrrrrr.
Some commentator wqs saying they voted for this because they were pressured by people saying they didnt want their 401ks turning into 201ks.
What? Are all of these people idiots ?!? You dont want to buy all of your funds while THE MARKET IS AT ITS PEAK.
Every once in a while you want the market to tank so you can buys tons of more shares for cheap.
Who the $!#@$!@%$!#$@% is teaching everyone retirement planning???? !#$!#$#$^%#@%
What a huge pill to swallow. I’m not sure I can survive the next 4 weeks, let alone the next 4 years. I think I’ll turn off the TV and start to pray.
I would like to thank the U.S. Senate, and especially the Republican sellouts, for ensuring that 1 October 2008 will live in history as the day that the Senate voted to assasinate capitalism.
This is a national disgrace.
That must have been it because all of them Congresscritters have left the room!
Biden, McCain, Obama…all YES.
Clinton…yes.
Grahamnesty…yes.
Landrieu…no. (Re-elecion…hello)
Collins…yes
Snowe…yes
Stabenow…no
Kerry…not there?
Hutchison…yes
Boxer…yes
Feinstein…yes
Harry ‘Toolbox’ Reid is praising Chris Dodd. What a nauseating display. I wonder if he’s wearing hip boots behind that podium.
Harry Reid and his fellow congress critters are claiming that this bailout bill was for the “good” of the country.
Now, this idiot is praising Dodd. I cannot believe this. Is this a twisted universe or what?
I think that it’s time for New Hampshire and Kentucky to get rid of McConnell and Gregg. They aren’t conservatives that’s for sure.
The traitor McConnell just recognized Dodd also.
big surprise…
Oliver Cromwell…. where are you….. and yes I’m Catholic, I know what I’m referring to…. do you?
It’s 74-25.
The Dodd amendment is the substitute bailout bill, and it was attached to the mental health parity legislation, which also just passed 74-25.
How can McCain vote for this pork laden bill? He should have voted no and insisted on something better for the taxpayer.
You know, I hear them praising Dodd and my mind is conjuring up completely different dialog.
They say, “I’d like to thank Senator Dodd for his amazing work in helping to craft this bill…”
but I hear:
“I’d like to thank the fox for the magnificent job he’s done on redesigning the walls of the hen house…”
Why won’t the Rpublicans ever learn their lesson? This is so going to come back and bite them where it hurts…and that is just with the Democrats. The constituents back home? We’ll see.
Time after time the Retardicans fall for the “bi-partisan” spewage from the Democrats. It’s getting old…time for new blood?
Well Obama did tell us to learn another language.
OMG are they going to start making out, sheesh give it a rest guys.
How fitting that Mental Health and the
BailoutBuy-inTheft of $700 Billion dollars would be paired together.Hope the Senate included funding for skin grafts. I hear tar is hard to get off, feathers poke and itch, and being ridden out of town on a rail chafes badly.
Well there goes the election…
I didn’t live through the depression. I didn’t live through the Great War. I didn’t live through World War II. I had it easy, living was good. Now I will have to get it together to fight while our country falls to Socialism.
The Great Silent Takeover War of 2008-????.
I’m sure the Fannie donations to his re-election played no part in this. Not to be confused with the Fannie donations to Frank on the House side.
(Yes, I meant that
Socialist Bernie Sanders voted againast this.
Get on your house members and push this back.
My Rep is Michael McCaul…he’s against, tonight anyway. I’m still calling him in DC, and the local office.
McAmnesty and the other old farts have the viewpoint of a lot of old stupid people whose skin cancer hopefully will catch up with them none too soon.
They think they should spend all
theirour money before they die…Open Letter to McCain:
Dear Johnny:
Well, I’m sorry we’re at this pass.
I have vowed to vote against whom ever voted for this Socialist’s Dream.
Sorry. McI’mASocialistTool: I hope you were serious when you used this vote to tell Conservatives: “I don’t want or need your vote!”… because I got your message loud and clear.
I guess I should thank you for easing my mind over the decision. I was conflicted, but you’ve shown no understanding of the Constitution and what has made this country great. You truely haven’t a clue. So sad. As disappointing as GWB has been, he always will be a better President, and man, than you. You didn’t make the cut last time, and wouldn’t have this time without the MSM rebuilding & lying for you. Unfortunately, what a man builds that man can dismantle. The MSM will most likely dismantle you within the next 30 days.
Good bye Johnny, you won’t even be a footnote in history.
I cancelled my little county newspaper. No sense in spending money on a paper that doesn’t report the news accurately.
We are f*cked…..period! End of story!
Comrade Obama or Allah Obama…..welcome to your Amerikkka! Congratulations, you and your Alinsky/Wright/Ayers training kicked Republican ass!
I can’t believe both Texans, Cornyn and Hutchison, voted for this chicanery. It must take more than phone calls and emails to get their attention.
Hell yes!!! Any senator who voted for this piece of crap needs to be fired!!
As for me, I have been a registered Republican for 20 years, but that ends tomorrow. Since they have no problem selling me out, I’m more than happy to return the favor.
By the way, I love ‘Retardicans.’ With your permission, I’d like to use it.
Here’s the direct link to where the roll call vote will be shown
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=2&vote=00212
Feinstein was a “yay”?
If 93% of her constituency (that’s 85k out of 91k; hardly a small samplin) can’t persuade her, man…unfreakin’ believable.
As I said, she doesn’t care. She’ll be running for, and getting elected as, governor of CA in two years.
As an Okie, Colburn will be getting an earful and letter-ful from me….
I’m somewhat shocked by his yes vote…
I’m torn by all of this because I realize the trouble that our banks are in and how they’re all interlinked. I do believe only the Federal Government can hold these mortgage-backed securities long enough for them to mature.
On the other hand, people who take unnecessary risk in business deserve to fail. If you guess right, you’re rewarded. If you guess wrong, tough luck. That’s why it’s called “risk”. At 30-to-1 leveraged ratios, that’s some piss-poor investing.
But you can’t let the banks fail… Period.
That means those mark-to-market valued securities, which are worth nothing after the previous bank failures last week (but which do actually hold considerable value) need to be removed from the banking system. Or the regulations governing their valuation need to be changed. Something.
But. You. Can’t. Let. The. Banks. Fail.
Thanks for that. My cerebral cortex isn’t working too well tonight. I meant, can we get the breakdown of who voted yea and nay? I want final confirmation of who’s responsible for this travesty.
Let’s all remember the name attached to this amendment…let’s make it infamous.
Five years from now those 25 will be screaming “I was against that bill!” It will be what Iraq is now.
So how does that Rosetta Stone work?
Why bother with a Presidential election…let’s just have the senators and congressmen vote on it. What a charade it all is. But honestly, they are bottom feeders and guess who’s at the bottom.
May I sign onto this, too? You’ve expressed my sentiments exactly, and beautifully.
I said this before and I’ll say it again. I really don’t think McCain wants to win this election.
Well, I guess McCain will be taking names and making them famous, eh?
I think I called it weeks ago. McCain was scraping by without changing his position on immigration. He cant sustain going against those who are not in the GOP base. Palin was just a conservative blip in the road.
When this bill goes through, the GOP is about to hand over complete power in the Executive and Legislative branches of the government. I hope Im wrong.
Good thing they added the mental health provision. We’re gonna need it, the way they’re driving us insane.
I was trying to find that information myself, thanks for posting it. Not cool. Let’s hope the House members keep their sense.
rotary #74
Just change the mark-to-market. That doesn’t cost taxpayers $700 Billion dollars.
Sorry hun, but there were ways they could have ensured that banks didn’t fail without voting for welfare for piss-poor judgment. Gingrich had great ideas, and so did several others.
Doesn’t matter anymore anyway. We’re screwed.
“Good thing they added the mental health provision. We’re gonna need it, the way they’re driving us insane.”
Yeah, I wonder how much our health insurance will go up when the health insurance is FORCED to cover mental health. My husband is self insured and we pay for our own health insurance. We have an HSA and a high deductible policy.
No. Bank. Has. Failed.
This is just a way for those in Congress to protect the “earnings” from the illegal activities they have been involved with. Fannie Mae. Freddie Mac. AIG. Lehman. ACORN. Greenlining. All of these organizations traded in false investments from people who could not afford to pay for housing, based on the fact that the housing market was being artificially propelled by more ineligibles buying their $50,000 home for $500,000. It was all vapor, and it caught up to them. And the Congressional members watched as the money they
earnedstole from the American taxpayer disappeared with the vapor. Now they have colluded to steal an additional $700 Billion, which will quickly become several Trillions.
Here’s the facts: Every bank that has “folded” was fully insured. Nobody lost anything. The banks were capitalized by another firm immediately. Nobody is dying. It’s all scare tactics, because this scam wouldn’t work any other way…
…And we just blinked.
And these are the best and brightest in our country? If you’re a crackwhore asking for a payday loan, you’re now qualified to be a congressperson.
There are some big disappointments on that list.
Ijust tried to contact my representative rick larsen on his website (D-WA.) THREE TIMES and the site still isn’t receiving my email…are you guys having similar problems?
I almost wish I could do a Rip Van Winkle and wake up when the leaders woke up.
I agree that calling the local offices has a better impact.
I also called Pelosi’s DC office and told her that I was inspired to volunteer and campaign for the challenger to the Democratic incumbent here. The only way Washington is going to get a message is if they are all voted out.
Don’t forget to call the Campaign HQ’s as well and explain why you’re NOT donating.
I can’t believe the Republicans are so stupid. When will they learn? Democrats are NOT YOUR FRIENDS. They only use you as cover for their machinations against US interests. Then when the people scream murder, they point to you. Hey, notice they were calling this Bush’s bill and attacking it and supporting it earnestly at the same time.
Forget about me. I’m conservative, but Republican no longer. Sell outs I despise more than enemies. You know where you stand with enemies.
I contacted both Burr and Dole.
She clearly stated her intention to not support this scam.
She will win in NC!
McCain can join Obama’s team for all I care.
