The Senate votes: Crap Sandwich 2.0 with sugar on top passes 74-25

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 1, 2008 09:10 PM

Scroll for updates…roll call vote added…

The vote is underway.

Will they spit or swallow the Crap Sandwich?

Stand by for the tally…

At 9:16pm Eastern, C-SPAN counts 54 Yeas, 18 Nays.

At 9:18pm Eastern, it’s 65 Y, 19 N.

The Nays include Bunning, Barrasso, Dole, DeMint, Allard, Sanders, Sessions, Shelby, Stabenow, Wyden, Vitter, Tester, Nelson (Fla.), Roberts…

The Senate swallows.

Official announcement:

The Yeas are 74 and Nays are 25.

Back to the House.

Redouble those phone calls and faxes.

9:21pm Eastern. Harry Reid is patting himself on the back.

Sugar on top of the Crap Sandwich:

After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, winning lopsided passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House, where Republicans opposition softened.

Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25, a month before the presidential and congressional elections.

9:45pm Eastern. The “Dodd amendment” — the crap sandwich — having passed, the Senate now just also voted 74-25 to pass it as an attachment to the mental health parity legislation.

The Beltway talking point is now that opposition in the House has softened and that public opposition is softening, too.

Kindly disabuse Washington of that notion: 202-224-3121.

***

Roll call vote is not up yet on the Senate website. There were 25 bailout busters (15 Republicans, 10 Democrats).

Beck has some good advice. Conservatives need to return to our founding documents and form a strategy to combat the Stalinist Left. For 15 years the Democrats have been robbing the Treasury of trillions of dollars on behalf of their entitlement whores. The criminal trail is clear and there is no reason not to go for the jugular. Truth and justice must prevail or America is lost.

There have to be aggressive moves towards prosecution and insulating the Treasury and financial markets from the ongoing predations of leftist racketeering organizations like ACORN, MOVE-ON and their Democrat enablers. Their regular and successful MO appears to be to employ PR and legal intimidation against their marks. Combine that with Alinsky-style street level strongarm tactics and most genteel opponents will capitulate.

The American people must see the Republicans lead a violent and very public fight to restore constitutional authority and send the criminals to prison. The $700B bailout is the tip of the iceberg and only a beginning in this war for the soul of the Republic.

I believe you are mistaking ‘unpopular’ with ‘necessary’.

It was necessary to fix what caused the problem in the first place. It was necessary to punish those responsible. Neither of these occurred, and instead, we get a $700 Billion dollar band-aid that has no guarantee of working with a boatload of socialism.

Socialism is permanent recession. Look at any country that practices it. If I have to suffer a shorter recession to avoid socialism, that is necessary. That is medicine I will take, because some real good might come of it.

In line with what Gabe and Symrian say:

With all of these bailouts — past, present, and future — I’m left wondering one thing:

Is anyone pushing a repeal of the Community Reinvestment Act?

Now, I realize that the Communist Party will never admit that the CRA has been the primary culprit in this so-called “economic catastrophe”; but, although I’ve heard lots of blame being passed around, I haven’t heard ONE SINGLE PERSON suggest a primary cause that makes any logical sense other than the impacts of this ONE ACT on mortgages (and thus, banks).

Personally, I have a solid grasp of Microeconomics. But, I’m no Econ Professor; I’m no banker; I’m no financial genius; and my understanding of National (or Global) scale economics, and things like monetary policy, investment, national debt, etc. etc. is very basic, and some things are very hazy to me.

Now, without Rush, or Glenn, telling me that the CRA is the cause of this problem — I would be eternally in the dark as to why this “imminent economic collapse” has happened. But, needless to say, the explanation of how the CRA essentially forced the abandonment of free market principles in the mortgage industry (by forcing, or at least encouraging, lending to folks who can’t pay) makes simple common sense to me.

I guess I’m asking whether there is another possible culprit? Because I have not heard any other reasonable cause suggested by anyone (at least, not by anyone sane).

I am opposed to ANY bailout – regardless of its details. BUT, if the CRA is THE cause of this problem; why are there exactly ZERO Senators or Congressmen demanding that the repeal of the CRA be included in any bailout plan?

So the question for all of us is: what are the lessons learned from the Great Experiment? How did career politicians work out? What about socialized education? Liberty without responsibility? “Human Rights” without “Human Obligations”? Moral relativity? Materialism? Enslavement through taxation? Allowing our press, our universities and pretty much every other institution to be overrun by sorry, confused Marxist dinosaurs or grasping, self-serving individuals who worship only at the temple of selfish ambition?

Yep, let it burn, I say. The government is not the country, nor is the “economy”, and I have faith in the people of this country, who can and will build something better atop the stinking mess that will be our former government.

Where do I get that faith? Just have a look at the fine, selfless men and women who comprise our military, and at the millions of others who serve their families and communities without the first thought of profit, political ambition or self-aggrandizement. They are truly the “meek” who shall inherit the earth, and they will be the ones to construct a new and better future.

Pretty simple stuff. Our system of credit is moving towards failure. Without credit available, small businesses will be hurt, state governments will be hurt, jobs will be lost. And with all of this…all of the people that did the right thing, and did not get loans that they couldn’t afford, will be financially hurt or could possibly lose their jobs.

This bill isn’t to bailout all of the irresponsible people and specualtors (although, obvioulsy, it is bailing them out), it is being done to help the hardworking, responsible people in America that DON’T deserve to be hurt by the folly and greed of others.

Fred Thompson played a HUGE role in getting his “good friend John McCain” the Republican nomination!!!

Thompson entered the race late, left early, and seems to have had only one real objective in the race: to fool enough SC voters into voting for him so that John McCain, not Mike Huckabee, won the South Carolina primary. Mission accomplished, Thompson quit three days later.

McCain lost SC to Bush in 2000. McCain made sure he didn’t lose SC in 2008.

The 2000 SC loss led to McCain’s tirade about the “Agents of Intolerance”, for which he never apologized. Rather, McCain said those remarks were very deliberate and very thought out.

McCain is an enemy of the far right, and his actions today prove it. (as if we didn’t already know from “Agents of Intolerance”, Socialist AGW taxes, Amnesty, McCain-Feingold, etc.)

How do we go about rescinding the Republican party nomination from McCain?

The bail-out subsidizes (rewards) the latter not the former, thus it is a wealth-destroying event. It might FEEL good to have the government step and use your money to maintain the wealth of the den-of-thieves… but it is deleterious to our total wealth and standard of living in the long-run.

Pretty simple-minded explanation IMO. If all that businesses have to rely on to keep them in business is a credit line than they really don’t have a good business model now do they? The reason the economy is in a tail spin, Mr. Lietuva, is that this economy IS run on credit. We produce nothing anymore. Everybody is in debt, including myself. And my husband and I are getting out of it. Many people spent more than they could afford including businesses. Many businesses, both the corporate titans and smaller ones, are living on borrowed time. No bandaid will stop THAT amound of bleeding.

But now it is being thrown around like chicken feed, and therefore losing value. Over simplified, but an apt illustration in my view.

Aye, Chicken Little. More ignorance of economics shining brilliantly through. Thank God for public schools… There IS a price at which banks will lend to businesses, even risky ones, again. Wait – there is an IMPORTANT point there. There IS a price at which banks will lend to businesses , even RISKY ones (i.e., we’ll have to really consider RISK again).

The price at which banks will start lending again probably won’t be prime, prime – 1… not at 5%. Try Prime +1, Prime + 2… think higher – 9, 10, 12%. When the risk premium opens up enough, money will flow again (yes, yes, payrolls will suffer in the short-to-mid run).

Who do we, as conservatives, turn to now? Who?

    The next Reagan.

Holy Crap On A Stick! The Republican from my state voted for the bailout and the Democrat in my state vote against the bailout (I live in Florida)! How did this happen?!

Oh look, just one more way that Obama and McCain are the same. Let me count the ways…
    McCain-Feingold: check
    Illegal immigration: check
    “Living Constitution” judges: check
    Embryonic stem cell research: check
    Global warming: check
    2nd Amendment: check
    Populist views of economics: check
I just got my absentee ballot in the mail today. It’s a shame there isn’t a “None of the Above” choice on it.

How many of the “yeas” are up for reelection? I know Chambliss is, and he may have lost my vote.

How to write a letter to a Senator that he’ll take seriously. (If you are not in his state he will ignore it altogether).

    Go to Google Maps

type Pizza and the name of a major city in the Senator’s state

Take down the address and zip code of the pizza parlor

Enter a plausible pseudonym and the address for the pizza parlor. Also enter a pseudonymous (but real) e-mail address.

The Senator will take it seriously because he doesn’t really have a quick way of deciding if you are a voter or not.

Its even better if you have a service that let’s you mask your IP address.
