The Senate votes: Crap Sandwich 2.0 with sugar on top passes 74-25

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 1, 2008 09:10 PM

Scroll for updates…roll call vote added…

The vote is underway.

Will they spit or swallow the Crap Sandwich?

Stand by for the tally…

At 9:16pm Eastern, C-SPAN counts 54 Yeas, 18 Nays.

At 9:18pm Eastern, it’s 65 Y, 19 N.

The Nays include Bunning, Barrasso, Dole, DeMint, Allard, Sanders, Sessions, Shelby, Stabenow, Wyden, Vitter, Tester, Nelson (Fla.), Roberts…

The Senate swallows.

Official announcement:

The Yeas are 74 and Nays are 25.

Back to the House.

Redouble those phone calls and faxes.

9:21pm Eastern. Harry Reid is patting himself on the back.

Sugar on top of the Crap Sandwich:

After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, winning lopsided passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House, where Republicans opposition softened.

Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25, a month before the presidential and congressional elections.

9:45pm Eastern. The “Dodd amendment” — the crap sandwich — having passed, the Senate now just also voted 74-25 to pass it as an attachment to the mental health parity legislation.

The Beltway talking point is now that opposition in the House has softened and that public opposition is softening, too.

Kindly disabuse Washington of that notion: 202-224-3121.

***

Roll call vote is not up yet on the Senate website. There were 25 bailout busters (15 Republicans, 10 Democrats).

Its interesting that all over the news there are pissing matches left and right about FDIC amendment, and the revisions to include the tax breaks…but nothing, i mean nothing about Paulson’s (or successors…) powers.

Why dont we get to see a copy of this bill?

So no word on the powers of Paulson and the Federal reserve and somehow there is a media spin that the public is now “softening” to the idea of getting to eat a crap sando?

    Rocky:
My point is based on Article 1, Section 7 of the Constitution:

“Section 7. All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives”

In order for the House to “originate” a spending bill, it must be passed by vote. The bill the Senate voted on tonight was NOT.

Yes, you are right. Did they do this under some special exception, or are they just breaking the law assuming those of us in the idiocracy know no better?

I’m not a lawyer, but here’s my take on how they think this is OK, and why they are wrong…

    Article 1, Section 7

All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills

They think it’s OK because they proposed an amendment to House Resolution 1424:

Title: To amend section 712 of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, section 2705 of the Public Health Service Act, section 9812 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to require equity in the provision of mental health and substance-related disorder benefits under group health plans, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment, and for other purposes.

But this crap sandwich is no mere “amendment” to a mental health bill, and to do so is the height of corruption. That was just their excuse for starting in the Senate so that McCain is on record as supporting it, providing cover for 11 Representatives to switch their vote in the House.

    Tyrants.

You said in your last State of the Union Address on January 28, 2008:

And members of Congress should know: If any bill raises taxes reaches my desk, I will veto it. (Applause.)

Just as we trust Americans with their own money, we need to earn their trust by spending their tax dollars wisely.

The people’s trust in their government is undermined by congressional earmarks — special interest projects that are often snuck in at the last minute, without discussion or debate. Last year, I asked you to voluntarily cut the number and cost of earmarks in half. I also asked you to stop slipping earmarks into committee reports that never even come to a vote. Unfortunately, neither goal was met. So this time, if you send me an appropriations bill that does not cut the number and cost of earmarks in half, I’ll send it back to you with my veto. (Applause.)

    TXGator:

I also commiserate with your situation. I was once, about 3 years ago, a public school substitute teacher. I have a Master’s in Social Studies Education and worked in both the public and private sectors (Catholic schools).

My most memorable/happy times were spent subbing in Catholic schools. I had been trying to get a permanent position in Social Studies for years. I started talking to other subs who were telling me that public schools in Colorado Springs, CO weren’t hiring teachers with master’s degrees. They didn’t want to pay the high salaries off the bat. I also suspected that they weren’t interested in me teaching period because I was a military spouse who could only stay for 3 years.

I took a long-term Social Studies position that I wish I hadn’t. The kids were unruly, mouthed off, and made my life miserable. I was constantly compared to the teacher who took off the rest of the year to care for her dying husband. Some of the kids wanted to learn and think independently of their hormones (these are 8th graders after all) but most wanted to fool around and not do their work. I graded the later accordingly.

I find that when public schools are more concerned with seeing new, qualified teachers like me as subs working slave wages rather than equally qualified to teach than there’s a problem. I had no respect for the local teacher’s union who said they only represent “full-time” teachers and not subs (many of whom are certified and qualified younger teachers looking for their first teaching jobs).

Needless to say, I got disgusted with the situation and decided to not get certified to teach here in Hampton Roads, VA where class/racial tensions are open for all to see. I went to the private sector (Naval contracting) and made twice what I made as a sub. I might homeschool when my husband and I have a child but I’ll do all that I can to see that I educate my kid to know the differences between education and indoctrination.

Keep up the good fight. We need good math and science teachers. The washed-up hacks in Social Studies have overpopulated the field and refuse to retire so that the field can become reenergized with new blood.

Excuse me for being passionate about the defense of our great nation.

Who would blame Romney for not showing up at some set-up?

The four candidates who didn’t show up for the Values Voter Debate:
    1) Insulted the seven other candidates who did show up,
    2) Essentially gave the finger to Values Voters, and
    3) All directly contributed to McCain becoming the nominee of our party.

Thompson was McCain’s stalking horse in SC.

Giuliani was McCain’s stalking horse in FL.

Romney did everything in his power to hand the nomination to McCain on a silver platter on February 7th and again on February 14th. Romney should have stayed in the race. Neither Romney nor Huckabee had to get to 1191…they only had to keep McCain from getting to 1191, and it would have gone to a brokered convention.

A brokered convention would have resulted either in someone other than John McCain winning the nomination, or John McCain making significant concessions to conservatives in order to win the nomination.

It would have been better for our party and our country if Mitt had stayed in the race. Instead, he quit saying, “I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror”. Do you really believe terrorism is the reason why Romney quit? I don’t.

Shmuckabee clearly is a religious bigot.

    Let me guess…you’re a Mormon/LDS, right?

I’ve heard that line over and over and over and over from Mormons/LDS. The truth is that the real bigotry has been from Mormons/LDS against Evangelicals. “Bigot” seems to be their favorite word. Much like “racist” seems to be Democrats’ favorite word. I’ve written several posts about the bigotry I witnessed from Mormons against Evangelicals.

That point alone makes me not like him or trust him. Add that to his left-wing politics and you’ve completely lost me.

While I respect WND and Joseph Farah, his “Homeschoolers beware!” post is alarmist and off-base. Mike Huckabee is a friend, not foe, of homeschoolers, and most homeschoolers know that.

“We are building AFG from within the homeschooling community because homeschoolers have a strong track record for innovation, organization and success,” Escobar remarks. “Just ask Mike Huckabee.”

HucksArmy.com was created by 19-year-old Brett and Alex Harris, homeschool graduates from Portland, Oregon.

Huckabee, Paul labeled as most family friendly

But I always like to use primary sources whenever possible. Why not look at Mike Huckabee’s own words when he spoke at Patrick Henry College’s Commencement 2008

That’s it. I’ve said what I said and I’m done. Just show some respect for MM by not trying to make her blog, your blog……
If Michelle Malkin thinks I’m being disrespectful, she’ll tell me herself. I suggest you show some respect for MM by not trying to moderate her blog.

    Careful, sir. I am LDS.

Have the Evangelicals been treated to the following law, anywhere in the US? (tiff of both orders)

Missouri Governor Lilburn W. Boggs issued Missouri Executive Order Number 44 on October 27, 1838.

Missouri Executive Order Number 44 is better known as the Mormon Extermination Order.

Hundreds of Mormons were beaten, lynched, murdered, looted, tarred and raped under color of Executive Order Number 44.

    * * *

    Missouri Executive Order Number 44:

    Headquarters of the Militia,
City of Jefferson, Oct. 27, 1838.

    General John B. Clark:

Sir: Since the order of this morning to you, directing you to cause four hundred mounted men to be raised within your division, I have received by Amos Reese, Esq., of Ray county, and Wiley C. Williams, Esq., one of my aids, information of the most appalling character, which entirely changes the face of things, and places the Mormons in the attitude of an open and avowed defiance of the laws, and of having made war upon the people of this state. Your orders are, therefore, to hasten your operation with all possible speed.

The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the state if necessary for the public peace–their outrages are beyond all description.

If you can increase your force, you are authorized to do so to any extent you may consider necessary. I have just issued orders to Maj. Gen. Willock, of Marion county, to raise five hundred men, and to march them to the northern part of Daviess, and there unite with Gen. Doniphan, of Clay, who has been ordered with five hundred men to proceed to the same point for the purpose of intercepting the retreat of the Mormons to the north.

They have been directed to communicate with you by express, you can also communicate with them if you find it necessary. Instead therefore of proceeding as at first directed to reinstate the citizens of Daviess in their homes, you will proceed immediately to Richmond and then operate against the Mormons. Brig. Gen. Parks of Ray, has been ordered to have four hundred of his brigade in readiness to join you at Richmond. The whole force will be placed under your command.

    I am very respectfully,
    your ob’t serv’t,

    L. W. Boggs,
    Commander-in-Chief.

Missouri Governor Christopher Bond rescinded Executive Order 44 in 1976

Please note that the reason the Mormons were under attack was that they were very strongly in the anti-slavery movement, and it was feared that they would tip Missouri into the anti-slavery column.

Most LDS I know, (and because I travel a lot in my job, I know quite a few) were against Romney or were reluctantly for him.

Rush, Hewitt, Hannity & Beck have all commented on Huckabee’s lack of Conservatism. And his Religion Card tactics. Are you telling me Rush is LDS? Hannity’s lying about his Cath. creds? Yes, I know Beck is LDS.

You reference Home Schoolers organized for Huckabee. If high schoolers were competent to run the world, they would
    be.

You’ve written several posts about LDS bigotry? Put in google “anti-mormon” and you get: …of about 199,000 for anti-mormon. Most of those by “Evangelicals”. You complain about a little push-back? Like those blacks who call not-blacks who complain about the Race Card, you use the same tactic.

    Please note, I condemn the contention & push-back. see 3 Nephi 11:29

DO NOT LIBEL MY CHURCH, SIR!

I disagree with, but understand Romney’s choice. He was bombarded from all sides with advice saying he needed to “play by the GOP rules” to have a political future. Add that to the “Only McCain can save us in the WOT” lie and it isn’t hard to understand Romney’s choice. Personally, I think that disqualified him, but oh well.

As you have seemed to be someone who always touts ‘look at what a person does, not says’, I’m frankly surprised at your pro-huck stance. Just look at his promises, the laws he pushed, and the resultant stats for his state. He’s Clinton lite.

As a man who’s mind is mostly gears and spreadsheets, I can say that the data tells the story.

    Lastly:

Those who can’t handle the truth
try to silence those who speak it.

    Oh! You must mean:

That point alone makes me not like him or trust him. Add that to his left-wing politics and you’ve completely lost me.
It is a lie to call his politics “left-wing”. Stop lying about Huckabee.

Note that Romney has never accused anyone of bigotry, and has protested on several talk shows, (Rush, Hannity, Beck) that he didn’t feel any of that from Huckabee. I heard these protestations with my own ears, so I know that they happened. Why do you insinuate that he’s played the bigot card?

In closing, I hope that this new-found ungentlemanly behavior is an aberration, and not some new wrinkle you’ve decided to implement in your future posts.

    aside:
Michelle, I’m sorry about the length, I simply couldn’t allow the wholesale smearing of my Church to
    stand.

    Stealth Reparations —

It’s time to start calling a spade a spade, a pig a pig, and reparations as reparations. This entire fiasco is related to the Dem’s attempt to provide ‘reparations’ under the radar of the average bubba. The language tucked away in this reparations bill clarifies things just peachy — Taxpayers are on the hook for buying up mortgages of minorities who can’t pay for their house. Minorities are being given reparations — opps, ah, I didn’t mean reparations, it’s a free house….

Fine print — anyone who calls crap as crap, a pig a pig or reparations as reparations will be also called a racist…

    mike.musculus,
My post was in direct response to

“Shmuckabee clearly is a religious bigot.”

I was pushing back against that attitude, not the LDS church as a whole. I was not trying to pick a fight with LDS, and I apologize for my words giving that impression. I think that we have a lot more in common than different. (And you can put any two people in a room and there will be something about which they disagree). LDS and Evangelicals typically vote very similarly, and it is important that we don’t fight each other. I’ve even had LDS members compliment me on my blog.

We do have significant theological differences, but in the context of politics, we are on the same team.

    Truce?

RedPill, I’ve never had a beef with you. Joy is simply stating what the bulk of conservative media have been saying, and from the outside, I’d have to agree with her. Outward appearences certainly make the case.

What stops me from making an issue about it is that Romney himself said that he’s never felt any bigotry from Huckabee. I remember during an interview, when Sean H. kept pushing it on his (Romney’s) plate, Romney kept dumping it on the floor telling Sean that it wasn’t so. His absolute certainty convinced me there was more here than either are saying.

Who am I to argue with the man who’s there and personally knows Huckabee? I can only conclude that regardless of surface appearences, it isn’t so.

I will admit to being a little sensitive with all the Anti-Mormon lit. being mainstreamed these days, though.

So, let us mend our fences and drop-kick these Socialists!
