After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, winning lopsided passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House, where Republicans opposition softened.
Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25, a month before the presidential and congressional elections.
9:45pm Eastern. The “Dodd amendment” — the crap sandwich — having passed, the Senate now just also voted 74-25 to pass it as an attachment to the mental health parity legislation.
The Beltway talking point is now that opposition in the House has softened and that public opposition is softening, too.

Newt is a loser and has been for a long time now.
Conservatives don’t have anyone to rally around right now. Although I still believe that America is mostly conservative. The problem is we don’t have a conservative Soros to finance the message on the alphabet stations.
That’s what it is going to take is paid airtime since the alphabets are all in the tank for b. Hussein and all things left.
Conservatives need to get on the stick and start getting our voices heard. And not just to defend from the lies of the left, but to articulate our beliefs and show people the proof from history that they work!

As it is, almost every student I have is an Obambi fan. Indoctrinated, indeed. I die a little on the inside when they wax poetically about THE ONE. I still think they are less self-centered than the clowns we have in Congress, but only slightly.
Between that and the fact I’m only allowed to fail 2 students per class without an immense amount of paperwork and phone calling, I don’t know that I can make it to retirement in the liberal world of public school. I’m afraid I might start speaking to people at work, and facts anger them immensely.

My point is based on Article 1, Section 7 of the Constitution:
“Section 7. All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives”
In order for the House to “originate” a spending bill, it must be passed by vote. The bill the Senate voted on tonight was NOT.

Better to find the few bright souls among the lost ones and try to influence their lives in some positive way. There is bread for life in that basket. My head hurts, my husband has become a conspiracy theorist, and I have worn out my fingers for typing emails to my Rep and Senators and dialing Washington. And I’m really depressed about this.
My favorite 1/2 hour of this whole debacle was listening to Dave Ramsey on the Glen Beck program. That was informative – and a hoot.
But it gave me some happiness to email Mel Martinez and tell him that my family will actively work to send him back Florida when he’s up for re-election. I emailed Bill Nelson to thank him for his no vote – but couldn’t bring myself to tell him that I would vote for him in the future.
Awesome. Both of the Senators from my state, Pa, voted to give away my money. Kudos to Senator Brownback for sticking up for us. He was my choice way back in the beginning.

They actually have talking points: more money equals better results, lower scores for different ‘races’ equals discrimination, girls are treated differently, we have to instill self-esteem so we can’t fail anyone, etc. Basically your garden variety communist classroom. I’m surprised we haven’t started singing Obambi chants (yet) in homeroom.
I say this as a teacher, don’t put your kid in public school if you can help it. Let them earn their self-esteem, and let them feel failure. Promise, it won’t kill ‘em.

Lately its been difficult to tell my two Senators apart. But now I understand why. Both Senator Reid (D) and Ensign (R) now have the Communist Manifesto hanging proudly in their senate offices.

I also commiserate with your situation. I was once, about 3 years ago, a public school substitute teacher. I have a Master’s in Social Studies Education and worked in both the public and private sectors (Catholic schools).
My most memorable/happy times were spent subbing in Catholic schools. I had been trying to get a permanent position in Social Studies for years. I started talking to other subs who were telling me that public schools in Colorado Springs, CO weren’t hiring teachers with master’s degrees. They didn’t want to pay the high salaries off the bat. I also suspected that they weren’t interested in me teaching period because I was a military spouse who could only stay for 3 years.
I took a long-term Social Studies position that I wish I hadn’t. The kids were unruly, mouthed off, and made my life miserable. I was constantly compared to the teacher who took off the rest of the year to care for her dying husband. Some of the kids wanted to learn and think independently of their hormones (these are 8th graders after all) but most wanted to fool around and not do their work. I graded the later accordingly.
I find that when public schools are more concerned with seeing new, qualified teachers like me as subs working slave wages rather than equally qualified to teach than there’s a problem. I had no respect for the local teacher’s union who said they only represent “full-time” teachers and not subs (many of whom are certified and qualified younger teachers looking for their first teaching jobs).
Needless to say, I got disgusted with the situation and decided to not get certified to teach here in Hampton Roads, VA where class/racial tensions are open for all to see. I went to the private sector (Naval contracting) and made twice what I made as a sub. I might homeschool when my husband and I have a child but I’ll do all that I can to see that I educate my kid to know the differences between education and indoctrination.
Keep up the good fight. We need good math and science teachers. The washed-up hacks in Social Studies have overpopulated the field and refuse to retire so that the field can become reenergized with new blood.

Joy…I sort of like Itooktheredpills’ comments…they usually have some handy details and add quite a bit to the discussion. I don’t see any “hijacking” going on, and I’m sure if there were, MM would be able to handle it all on her own without any help. I suspect you must have an axe to grind as I can’t seriously believe you losing a whopping 10 seconds out of your day is all that great an inconvenience. The posts are spot on…Bush needed to hold to what he promised, and didn’t. I was absolutely shocked when “Little” Debbie Stabinow (D-MI) voted AGAINST this bill. I don’t know if it had anything to do with the fact that she isn’t running for her seat this year, or perhaps she because sensible overnight.

The four candidates who didn’t show up for the Values Voter Debate:
1) Insulted the seven other candidates who did show up,
2) Essentially gave the finger to Values Voters, and
3) All directly contributed to McCain becoming the nominee of our party.
Thompson was McCain’s stalking horse in SC.
Giuliani was McCain’s stalking horse in FL.
Romney did everything in his power to hand the nomination to McCain on a silver platter on February 7th and again on February 14th. Romney should have stayed in the race. Neither Romney nor Huckabee had to get to 1191…they only had to keep McCain from getting to 1191, and it would have gone to a brokered convention.
A brokered convention would have resulted either in someone other than John McCain winning the nomination, or John McCain making significant concessions to conservatives in order to win the nomination.
It would have been better for our party and our country if Mitt had stayed in the race. Instead, he quit saying, “I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror”. Do you really believe terrorism is the reason why Romney quit? I don’t.

Please note that the reason the Mormons were under attack was that they were very strongly in the anti-slavery movement, and it was feared that they would tip Missouri into the anti-slavery column.
Most LDS I know, (and because I travel a lot in my job, I know quite a few) were against Romney or were reluctantly for him.
Rush, Hewitt, Hannity & Beck have all commented on Huckabee’s lack of Conservatism. And his Religion Card tactics. Are you telling me Rush is LDS? Hannity’s lying about his Cath. creds? Yes, I know Beck is LDS.

I disagree with, but understand Romney’s choice. He was bombarded from all sides with advice saying he needed to “play by the GOP rules” to have a political future. Add that to the “Only McCain can save us in the WOT” lie and it isn’t hard to understand Romney’s choice. Personally, I think that disqualified him, but oh well.
As you have seemed to be someone who always touts ‘look at what a person does, not says’, I’m frankly surprised at your pro-huck stance. Just look at his promises, the laws he pushed, and the resultant stats for his state. He’s Clinton lite.
As a man who’s mind is mostly gears and spreadsheets, I can say that the data tells the story.

Note that Romney has never accused anyone of bigotry, and has protested on several talk shows, (Rush, Hannity, Beck) that he didn’t feel any of that from Huckabee. I heard these protestations with my own ears, so I know that they happened. Why do you insinuate that he’s played the bigot card?

Stealth Reparations —
It’s time to start calling a spade a spade, a pig a pig, and reparations as reparations. This entire fiasco is related to the Dem’s attempt to provide ‘reparations’ under the radar of the average bubba. The language tucked away in this reparations bill clarifies things just peachy — Taxpayers are on the hook for buying up mortgages of minorities who can’t pay for their house. Minorities are being given reparations — opps, ah, I didn’t mean reparations, it’s a free house….
Fine print — anyone who calls crap as crap, a pig a pig or reparations as reparations will be also called a racist…

I was pushing back against that attitude, not the LDS church as a whole. I was not trying to pick a fight with LDS, and I apologize for my words giving that impression. I think that we have a lot more in common than different. (And you can put any two people in a room and there will be something about which they disagree). LDS and Evangelicals typically vote very similarly, and it is important that we don’t fight each other. I’ve even had LDS members compliment me on my blog.
We do have significant theological differences, but in the context of politics, we are on the same team.

RedPill, I’ve never had a beef with you. Joy is simply stating what the bulk of conservative media have been saying, and from the outside, I’d have to agree with her. Outward appearences certainly make the case.
What stops me from making an issue about it is that Romney himself said that he’s never felt any bigotry from Huckabee. I remember during an interview, when Sean H. kept pushing it on his (Romney’s) plate, Romney kept dumping it on the floor telling Sean that it wasn’t so. His absolute certainty convinced me there was more here than either are saying.
Who am I to argue with the man who’s there and personally knows Huckabee? I can only conclude that regardless of surface appearences, it isn’t so.
I will admit to being a little sensitive with all the Anti-Mormon lit. being mainstreamed these days, though.
So, let us mend our fences and drop-kick these Socialists!
