The Senate votes: Crap Sandwich 2.0 with sugar on top passes 74-25
Scroll for updates…roll call vote added…
The vote is underway.
Will they spit or swallow the Crap Sandwich?
Stand by for the tally…
At 9:16pm Eastern, C-SPAN counts 54 Yeas, 18 Nays.
At 9:18pm Eastern, it’s 65 Y, 19 N.
The Nays include Bunning, Barrasso, Dole, DeMint, Allard, Sanders, Sessions, Shelby, Stabenow, Wyden, Vitter, Tester, Nelson (Fla.), Roberts…
The Senate swallows.
Official announcement:
The Yeas are 74 and Nays are 25.
Back to the House.
Redouble those phone calls and faxes.
9:21pm Eastern. Harry Reid is patting himself on the back.
Sugar on top of the Crap Sandwich:
After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, winning lopsided passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House, where Republicans opposition softened.
Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25, a month before the presidential and congressional elections.
9:45pm Eastern. The “Dodd amendment” — the crap sandwich — having passed, the Senate now just also voted 74-25 to pass it as an attachment to the mental health parity legislation.
The Beltway talking point is now that opposition in the House has softened and that public opposition is softening, too.
Kindly disabuse Washington of that notion: 202-224-3121.
***
Roll call vote is not up yet on the Senate website. There were 25 bailout busters (15 Republicans, 10 Democrats).

Ok….
I finally get Stabenow to vote my way…
and McCain votes the other way?
Heh? Come on….Really, what the heck is he doing?
Newt is a loser and has been for a long time now.
Conservatives don’t have anyone to rally around right now. Although I still believe that America is mostly conservative. The problem is we don’t have a conservative Soros to finance the message on the alphabet stations.
That’s what it is going to take is paid airtime since the alphabets are all in the tank for b. Hussein and all things left.
Conservatives need to get on the stick and start getting our voices heard. And not just to defend from the lies of the left, but to articulate our beliefs and show people the proof from history that they work!
RockyR,
As it is, almost every student I have is an Obambi fan. Indoctrinated, indeed. I die a little on the inside when they wax poetically about THE ONE. I still think they are less self-centered than the clowns we have in Congress, but only slightly.
Between that and the fact I’m only allowed to fail 2 students per class without an immense amount of paperwork and phone calling, I don’t know that I can make it to retirement in the liberal world of public school. I’m afraid I might start speaking to people at work, and facts anger them immensely.

Correct.
You don’t have to pay for airtime/advertising if you can get on the shows themselves.
That’s exactly what Mike Huckabee is doing.
I think I’m starting to become one of those Ruby Ridge nutjobs. I viscerally hate these people for what they are doing to what used to be a dream of a country.
They deserve to be punished for their treason. Does that sound crazy to anyone else?
Rocky:
My point is based on Article 1, Section 7 of the Constitution:
“Section 7. All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives”
In order for the House to “originate” a spending bill, it must be passed by vote. The bill the Senate voted on tonight was NOT.
TXGator,
In the words of the infamous “I feel your pain”… or rather I hear it. I’d recommend you not rock the public school boat. Those people will eat your lunch. Better to find the few bright souls among the lost ones and try to influence their lives in some positive way. There is bread for life in that basket. Trying to change an unchangeable system from within… I’m rooting for your retirement
I recently had a conversation with a group of 20-somethings who didn’t know that McCain was a POW. Talk about out of touch. These poor guys are miserably indoctrinated/influenced by their “leaders”. It’s very sad. A group of bright people who really, really struggle to think for themselves. Alas, they’ve been taught their entire lives not to…

I feel your pain. It’s sad what the government has done to the education of our youth. Thank you for being one of the “good ones”, even if you are strongly discouraged from speaking the truth (those who can’t handle the truth try to silence those who speak it).
In this “Land of the Free”, parents have three choices:
1) Liberal Indocrination Camps (also known as Public Schools)
2) Homeschool (but liberals want to make that illegal)
3) Private school (which costs a small fortune)
Yes, you are right. Did they do this under some special exception, or are they just breaking the law assuming those of us in the idiocracy know no better?
My head hurts, my husband has become a conspiracy theorist, and I have worn out my fingers for typing emails to my Rep and Senators and dialing Washington. And I’m really depressed about this.
My favorite 1/2 hour of this whole debacle was listening to Dave Ramsey on the Glen Beck program. That was informative – and a hoot.
But it gave me some happiness to email Mel Martinez and tell him that my family will actively work to send him back Florida when he’s up for re-election. I emailed Bill Nelson to thank him for his no vote – but couldn’t bring myself to tell him that I would vote for him in the future.
Awesome. Both of the Senators from my state, Pa, voted to give away my money. Kudos to Senator Brownback for sticking up for us. He was my choice way back in the beginning.
Turning in over here…
Cheers all.
Huckabee is fine, unless of course you’re against illegal immigration and high taxes/social welfare programs.

Not crazy at all. I’ve said as much in other comments.
I would like to see them rightfully punished for any and all of the following:
* Treason (Article III, Section 3 of the United States Constitution)
* Violation of the Smith Act
* Violation of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution
Thanks, guys…I appreciate the commiseration. I wonder if most parents realize their kid’s teacher thinks like Pelosi. They actually have talking points: more money equals better results, lower scores for different ‘races’ equals discrimination, girls are treated differently, we have to instill self-esteem so we can’t fail anyone, etc. Basically your garden variety communist classroom. I’m surprised we haven’t started singing Obambi chants (yet) in homeroom.
I say this as a teacher, don’t put your kid in public school if you can help it. Let them earn their self-esteem, and let them feel failure. Promise, it won’t kill ‘em.

Does anyone know if this new crap sandwich addresses the Federal Reserves oversight or lack there of?
Its interesting that all over the news there are pissing matches left and right about FDIC amendment, and the revisions to include the tax breaks…but nothing, i mean nothing about Paulson’s (or successors…) powers.
Why dont we get to see a copy of this bill?
So no word on the powers of Paulson and the Federal reserve and somehow there is a media spin that the public is now “softening” to the idea of getting to eat a crap sando?
This STINKS.
I just called my entire Oregon representation. Yup! Every voice-mail box is full. Sorry. Good-bye!
Terrific! Just terrific. At least I could tell the switch-board operator…for every 6 times I called…how much I disapprove of this bill!
Lately its been difficult to tell my two Senators apart. But now I understand why. Both Senator Reid (D) and Ensign (R) now have the Communist Manifesto hanging proudly in their senate offices.
There was a time not too long ago, where the citizens of Nevada were free from federal government meddling and persecution. Looks like our “representatives” on both sides of the aisle have sold us out.
I guess its time to move to Idaho.
The foxes have us hens’ best interest in mind. Don’t worry about a thing.
Pelosi should be in jail, and so should anyone else who travels to foreign lands and speaks to terrorists. When exactly did we stop enforcing the laws of this nation?
Clinton? Gore? Should be getting locked up for the night right now for their traitorous actions with the Chinese.
I really hated watching how proud of themselves these senators were tonight. I’d like to open hand slap about a baker’s dozen of ‘em.

I’m not a lawyer, but here’s my take on how they think this is OK, and why they are wrong…
Article 1, Section 7
They think it’s OK because they proposed an amendment to House Resolution 1424:
But this crap sandwich is no mere “amendment” to a mental health bill, and to do so is the height of corruption. That was just their excuse for starting in the Senate so that McCain is on record as supporting it, providing cover for 11 Representatives to switch their vote in the House.
Tyrants.

President Bush is not a Communist, but he is naive and trusts people who should not be trusted…like Secretary Paulson.
itooktheredpill – Mike Huckabee brings on a gag reflex.
He may be right on this one issue, but he is no conservative! And he decidedly LOST the primaries, with good reason. The only reason he ended up with any delagates at all was because he and Paul were the only ones left besides loser McCain. Romney pwned him in the debates.
No… no and no… gack.
Mr. President,
I expect you to be a man of your word.
You said in your last State of the Union Address on January 28, 2008:
PS itooktheredpill – I, for one, wish you’d stop trying to take over Michelle’s blog. Trying to scroll past your numurous and lengthy posts is getting really annoying.
TXGator:
I also commiserate with your situation. I was once, about 3 years ago, a public school substitute teacher. I have a Master’s in Social Studies Education and worked in both the public and private sectors (Catholic schools).
My most memorable/happy times were spent subbing in Catholic schools. I had been trying to get a permanent position in Social Studies for years. I started talking to other subs who were telling me that public schools in Colorado Springs, CO weren’t hiring teachers with master’s degrees. They didn’t want to pay the high salaries off the bat. I also suspected that they weren’t interested in me teaching period because I was a military spouse who could only stay for 3 years.
I took a long-term Social Studies position that I wish I hadn’t. The kids were unruly, mouthed off, and made my life miserable. I was constantly compared to the teacher who took off the rest of the year to care for her dying husband. Some of the kids wanted to learn and think independently of their hormones (these are 8th graders after all) but most wanted to fool around and not do their work. I graded the later accordingly.
I find that when public schools are more concerned with seeing new, qualified teachers like me as subs working slave wages rather than equally qualified to teach than there’s a problem. I had no respect for the local teacher’s union who said they only represent “full-time” teachers and not subs (many of whom are certified and qualified younger teachers looking for their first teaching jobs).
Needless to say, I got disgusted with the situation and decided to not get certified to teach here in Hampton Roads, VA where class/racial tensions are open for all to see. I went to the private sector (Naval contracting) and made twice what I made as a sub. I might homeschool when my husband and I have a child but I’ll do all that I can to see that I educate my kid to know the differences between education and indoctrination.
Keep up the good fight. We need good math and science teachers. The washed-up hacks in Social Studies have overpopulated the field and refuse to retire so that the field can become reenergized with new blood.

Oh, like this debate?
The true conservatives showed up for that debate.
The four who didn’t show up are not to be trusted.
And Romney supports the crap sandwich.
I have the listed reasons for why those that said no did. Great stuff. It’s good to see some of the Senators decided to stand up for what is right.
http://www.thedailyconservative.net/2008/10/02/the-senators-that-said-no-and-why/
Joy…I sort of like Itooktheredpills’ comments…they usually have some handy details and add quite a bit to the discussion. I don’t see any “hijacking” going on, and I’m sure if there were, MM would be able to handle it all on her own without any help. I suspect you must have an axe to grind as I can’t seriously believe you losing a whopping 10 seconds out of your day is all that great an inconvenience. The posts are spot on…Bush needed to hold to what he promised, and didn’t. I agree with the post about where money bills are supposed to originate; I posted that same thought myself in another forum and it is spot on as well. Thus endeth the rant….
Feingold voted nay? Really?
It’s not swallow…
It’s bend over.
That’s what it really is about, isn’t it Senators? Corruption and the “What’s in it for me?” attitude, during an election year.
Well said, Joy
Akaka and Inouye both voted yes. Hawaiian sovereignty must be in there somewhere. I still want part of an actual mortgage for my $2233, but I suppose my share are those wooden arrows since I don’t do wool research.
I am pissed, both my AZ senators both R’s voted for this mess, I knew McCain would, and Kyl has been spewing off on Fox news the past two days in favor. Damn! We need to clone Senator DeMint (SC) a good man. Thanks to all who didn’t cave. The Pelosi cat house will show their colors again tonight and pass this crap.
hitcharide *itooktheredpill’s alias, cough*
On one thread alone, there were only 46 comments and 19 were
yourshis. Yes, I counted them because I couldn’t believe how many posts I had to scroll past.Who would blame Romney for not showing up at some set-up? Shmuckabee clearly is a religious bigot. That point alone makes me not like him or trust him. Add that to his left-wing politics and you’ve completely lost me.
That’s it. I’ve said what I said and I’m done. Just show some respect for MM by not trying to make her blog, your blog……
Maybe we should send everyone in the YEA list a link to the Help Wanted ads in their local newspaper…
At least my reps are listening. First Tiahart says no, now Brownback and Roberts say no. Guess that means the state of Kansas says: NO!
Joy,
DOLE voted NAY, as stated earlier.
Texans:
Hutchinson and Cornyn MUST GO!!!
Disgusting.
I was absolutely shocked when “Little” Debbie Stabinow (D-MI) voted AGAINST this bill. I don’t know if it had anything to do with the fact that she isn’t running for her seat this year, or perhaps she because sensible overnight.
I’m half-inclined to send her a nice card and a “way to go!”
Deeds vs. words. I was referencing his governing actions. You are referencing his words. There is a big difference, which is why so many “conservatives” (whatever that word means anymore) have been suckered into voting for McCain/Palin. Also, you mentioned Homeschooling, if I recall. Here’s an interesting article about that concerning Huckabee.

Dead wrong. We’re two different people. (And hitcharide, thank you for your kind words)
Excuse me for being passionate about the defense of our great nation.
The four candidates who didn’t show up for the Values Voter Debate:
1) Insulted the seven other candidates who did show up,
2) Essentially gave the finger to Values Voters, and
3) All directly contributed to McCain becoming the nominee of our party.
Thompson was McCain’s stalking horse in SC.
Giuliani was McCain’s stalking horse in FL.
Romney did everything in his power to hand the nomination to McCain on a silver platter on February 7th and again on February 14th. Romney should have stayed in the race. Neither Romney nor Huckabee had to get to 1191…they only had to keep McCain from getting to 1191, and it would have gone to a brokered convention.
A brokered convention would have resulted either in someone other than John McCain winning the nomination, or John McCain making significant concessions to conservatives in order to win the nomination.
It would have been better for our party and our country if Mitt had stayed in the race. Instead, he quit saying, “I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror”. Do you really believe terrorism is the reason why Romney quit? I don’t.
Let me guess…you’re a Mormon/LDS, right?
I’ve heard that line over and over and over and over from Mormons/LDS. The truth is that the real bigotry has been from Mormons/LDS against Evangelicals. “Bigot” seems to be their favorite word. Much like “racist” seems to be Democrats’ favorite word. I’ve written several posts about the bigotry I witnessed from Mormons against Evangelicals.
It is a lie to call his politics “left-wing”. Stop lying about Huckabee.
If Michelle Malkin thinks I’m being disrespectful, she’ll tell me herself. I suggest you show some respect for MM by not trying to moderate her blog.
Those who can’t handle the truth
try to silence those who speak it.
Do my NJ senators have a backbone?
Nope. Losers.
I have a new-found respect for my Senators Dorgan and Conrad. They both voted “Nay”! Huh? Are they feeling ok?
I’m guessing this respect will be short-lived.
On October 2nd, 2008 at 9:14 am, Send_Me said:
While I respect WND and Joseph Farah, his “Homeschoolers beware!” post is alarmist and off-base. Mike Huckabee is a friend, not foe, of homeschoolers, and most homeschoolers know that.
HucksArmy.com was created by 19-year-old Brett and Alex Harris, homeschool graduates from Portland, Oregon.
Huckabee, Paul labeled as most family friendly
But I always like to use primary sources whenever possible. Why not look at Mike Huckabee’s own words when he spoke at Patrick Henry College’s Commencement 2008
Thank God that Senator Jim DeMint was willing to tell the truth about this travesty.
The timing of the Senate vote stole any hope of media coverage for this conservative “win”.
Basil Exposition: Austin, the Cold War is over!
Austin Powers: Finally those capitalist pigs will pay for their crimes, eh? Eh comrades? Eh?
Basil Exposition: Yes, Austin… we lost!
Let me preface this by saying I’ve usually enjoyed (and agreed with) your posts. You have a refreshing store of knowledge concerning the Founding Fathers, and have taught me some things, for which I am grateful.
Careful, sir. I am LDS.
Have the Evangelicals been treated to the following law, anywhere in the US? (tiff of both orders)
Please note that the reason the Mormons were under attack was that they were very strongly in the anti-slavery movement, and it was feared that they would tip Missouri into the anti-slavery column.
Most LDS I know, (and because I travel a lot in my job, I know quite a few) were against Romney or were reluctantly for him.
Rush, Hewitt, Hannity & Beck have all commented on Huckabee’s lack of Conservatism. And his Religion Card tactics. Are you telling me Rush is LDS? Hannity’s lying about his Cath. creds? Yes, I know Beck is LDS.
You reference Home Schoolers organized for Huckabee. If high schoolers were competent to run the world, they would
be.
You’ve written several posts about LDS bigotry? Put in google “anti-mormon” and you get: …of about 199,000 for anti-mormon. Most of those by “Evangelicals”. You complain about a little push-back? Like those blacks who call not-blacks who complain about the Race Card, you use the same tactic.
Please note, I condemn the contention & push-back. see 3 Nephi 11:29
DO NOT LIBEL MY CHURCH, SIR!
I disagree with, but understand Romney’s choice. He was bombarded from all sides with advice saying he needed to “play by the GOP rules” to have a political future. Add that to the “Only McCain can save us in the WOT” lie and it isn’t hard to understand Romney’s choice. Personally, I think that disqualified him, but oh well.
As you have seemed to be someone who always touts ‘look at what a person does, not says’, I’m frankly surprised at your pro-huck stance. Just look at his promises, the laws he pushed, and the resultant stats for his state. He’s Clinton lite.
As a man who’s mind is mostly gears and spreadsheets, I can say that the data tells the story.
Lastly:
Oh! You must mean:
Note that Romney has never accused anyone of bigotry, and has protested on several talk shows, (Rush, Hannity, Beck) that he didn’t feel any of that from Huckabee. I heard these protestations with my own ears, so I know that they happened. Why do you insinuate that he’s played the bigot card?
In closing, I hope that this new-found ungentlemanly behavior is an aberration, and not some new wrinkle you’ve decided to implement in your future posts.
aside:
Michelle, I’m sorry about the length, I simply couldn’t allow the wholesale smearing of my Church to
stand.
Stealth Reparations —
It’s time to start calling a spade a spade, a pig a pig, and reparations as reparations. This entire fiasco is related to the Dem’s attempt to provide ‘reparations’ under the radar of the average bubba. The language tucked away in this reparations bill clarifies things just peachy — Taxpayers are on the hook for buying up mortgages of minorities who can’t pay for their house. Minorities are being given reparations — opps, ah, I didn’t mean reparations, it’s a free house….
Fine print — anyone who calls crap as crap, a pig a pig or reparations as reparations will be also called a racist…
mike.musculus,
My post was in direct response to
I was pushing back against that attitude, not the LDS church as a whole. I was not trying to pick a fight with LDS, and I apologize for my words giving that impression. I think that we have a lot more in common than different. (And you can put any two people in a room and there will be something about which they disagree). LDS and Evangelicals typically vote very similarly, and it is important that we don’t fight each other. I’ve even had LDS members compliment me on my blog.
We do have significant theological differences, but in the context of politics, we are on the same team.
Truce?
RedPill, I’ve never had a beef with you. Joy is simply stating what the bulk of conservative media have been saying, and from the outside, I’d have to agree with her. Outward appearences certainly make the case.
What stops me from making an issue about it is that Romney himself said that he’s never felt any bigotry from Huckabee. I remember during an interview, when Sean H. kept pushing it on his (Romney’s) plate, Romney kept dumping it on the floor telling Sean that it wasn’t so. His absolute certainty convinced me there was more here than either are saying.
Who am I to argue with the man who’s there and personally knows Huckabee? I can only conclude that regardless of surface appearences, it isn’t so.
I will admit to being a little sensitive with all the Anti-Mormon lit. being mainstreamed these days, though.
So, let us mend our fences and drop-kick these Socialists!
