Joe Biden’s gaffes: Imagine if Sarah made them

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 2, 2008 11:53 PM

Several observers noted Joe Biden’s oopsy on Article I and the vice presidency.

Here’s what he said:

Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice president we’ve had probably in American history. The idea he doesn’t realize that Article I of the Constitution defines the role of the vice president of the United States, that’s the Executive Branch. He works in the Executive Branch. He should understand that. Everyone should understand that.

Reader Jason: “Biden’s largest gaffe of the night: I heard Biden state that Article 1 of the Constitution grants the Vice President his/her role. It is Article 2 that provides the Executive branch their enumerated powers. Article 1 is for the legislature.”

Reader G.K. emails:

Did you notice in the debate Joe Biden intimated that because Article I describes the role of the VP, it makes the position in the Executive and not Legislative branch?

Well, Article I is the description of the Legislative Branch (link)

In fact, the ONLY thing I see in the US Constitution about the Vice President is that the VP is the President of the Senate, but has a vote only in a tie. Originally the President of the Senate had a lot of authority…

Under the original code of Senate rules, the presiding officer exercised great power over the conduct of the body’s proceedings. Rule XVI provided that “every question of order shall be decided by the President [of the Senate], without debate; but if there be a doubt in his mind, he may call for a sense of the Senate.” Thus, contrary to later practice, the presiding officer was the sole judge of proper procedure and his rulings could not be turned aside by the full Senate without his assent.

In fact, according to the same site, the original role of the President of the Senate WAS very important.

Under the original code of Senate rules, the presiding officer exercised great power over the conduct of the body’s proceedings. Another blogger wrote:

The former chair of the judiciary committee should understand that Article 1 defines the legislative branch; Article 2 defines the executive branch. If you’re going to try and give that kind of detail, you damn well better get the detail right.

Team McCain noted it, too.

Another one: “We kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon.” Reaction: “What the hell?”

And compiled by the McCain camp:

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.

9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Time for another VDH parody!

McCain never voted against funding our troops; he voted against the liberal, white flag waiving Democrat Potty’s [sic] sick attempt to pass a withdrawal timelines bill with troop funding attached to it. Then the cowardly lemurs on the Left screamed, “But why didn’t you support the troops by admitting we’ve lost and have to get out of Iraq on a schedule?

Did I mention that libs are cowards? Yes. Meaning, after the 403-6 November 2005 House withdrawal vote, they couldn’t scrape a full set between the couple hundred of them in Congress to put up for a vote to defund the war. So, the cowards put up a timeline vote attached to troops funding and said, “We’ll fund the troops as they withdraw if you’ll vote for our surrender to the enemy date.”

And, on a personal note to Joe Biden, you are a coward for saying John McCain voted against funding the troops. While your sorry a$$ was dodging the draft in 1968, he had already been in the U.S. Navy for 9 years and was being tortured.

(A note to Michelle Malkin: If I was a bit over the line in your site’s comments rule, you have my apology but Joe Biden will never get one from me for writing what I wrote.)

Yes, it’s a real term…I corrected folks earlier.

Here’s the WIKI entry (and I also checked with Britannica):

In the English-speaking world, Bosniaks are most commonly known as Bosnian Muslims. Using information from the CIA World Fact Book, it can be seen that Bosnian Muslim is an imprecise synonym for Bosniak, because in Bosnia, Bosniaks make up 48% of the population, but only 40% of the population (of B&H) is Muslim.[26] Bosniaks are also referred to as Bosnians,[27] but this is also imprecise, as the term Bosnians can also be used to denote all inhabitants of Bosnia regardless of ethnic origin (i.e. not only Bosniaks, but also Bosnian Serbs, Bosnian Croats or any other group in the country).

Maybe it’s a “women” thing, but one of the things that really, really struck home with me and the girls watching the debate together tonight:

The school issue. Gov Palin hit a home run. The MSM and the pundits completely missed it, but if it resonated with the gals tonight, I am sure we are not the only ones.

Gov Palin looked right into the living rooms of every PTA mom tonight and said, “I am one of you. I understand”.

She has been derided as the airheaded, stereotypical “PTA Hockey Mom”, intimating that of course, one can not be a PTA Mom and be bright or articulate.

She put all of that to rest and further burnished her creds IMO.

Palin sends her kids to public school; her father and brothers are teachers — shout out — she rolled up her sleeves and got involved; she joined the PTA – which launched her political career – and she has thought about education issues — NCLB is not working, etc.

Her riff about personal responsibility — that is applied to the school issue too. All too often, teachers are excoriated for failing schools, when PARENTS have not done their share and lived up to their basic responsibilities, by sending children to school who are well-rested and motivated to learn and disciplined. This is NOT teacher’s fault.

Contrast this to Sen Obama. He has so little faith in the public school system, he enrolled HIS children in posh private schools. Typical limosine liberal, “do as I say, not as I do”.

I can not help but get angry when I think about the $150 Million (I think) that Obama was charged with distributing when he sat on the board for the Annenberg Challenge. He was handled an unprecedented opportunity to put that Harvard education and faux organizer concern to good use, to make a positive impact in the lives and educational opportunities for some of the most disadvantaged schoolchildren in America — Chicago’s inner schools.

And he took that money, that opportunity, that trust invested in him, and he SQUANDERED IT. Just PISSED IT AWAY. (Sorry for the caps, but I am SOOOOOO angry!!!).

And he gets a pass. A complete pass. Why is McCain-Palin not pounding him on that? That Obama has a track record, and that is a track record of NON-ACCOMPLISHMENT and complete failure.

What would Sarah Palin have done if handed $150 Million to improve the educational opportunities for at-risk children in Alaska? I am confident the outcome would have been completely different.

we have to admit it, there’s nothing out there with the BTU’s (British Thermal Units) per ounce than oil, other than Nuclear. And I don’t hear Obama or Whatdoyaknow Joe Biden calling for newer, safer, waste efficient nuclear reactors. Hello everyone…sorry to chime in so late, but I had friends over ot watch the debate and was delayed.
First off I though Sara Palin looked PETRIFIED on the outset. She relaxed within ten minutes or so. We were all very nervous here.
I had to hit the pause button to scream “LIAR!” at Joe Biden when he told the story of the gas station stop…..Hey, Joe,….when did the limo entourage with the Secret Service stop in your home town to fill up and let some perfect stranger approach you so that you could discuss gas prices? No…this never happened. Find the guy he talked to.
More importantly was Sara Palin’s performance. I like Sara Palin, don’t get me wrong. I REALLY like this woman as a politician. But tonight this Pit Bull with Lipstick was on a VERY SHORT LEASH!
There were many times Palin could have BURIED Joe Biden AND the Libs but it seemed obvious to me and my guests that she was not allowed to go there.
I will give you one example…..and I love this topic because I have had MANY a discourse on this at several Upper Left Side bars in Manhattan and silenced many a wacko on this topic………GLOBAL WARMING…..When asked about “Global Warming” (a pet topic of McCain’s I am sorry to say), She should have asked her ““Moderator, just what she meant by that. I’m sorry, but my constituents in Middle America who just spent the coldest winter on record…and what I mean by record is the last 100 years or so…and really, have there been ACCURATE weather readings GLOBALLY over the 100 years?…and, in addition, with the snowfall is some of the lower 48 states in the last four weeks….please explain to me exactly WHAT IS Global Warming? The voters really want to know exactly what you mean. Senator Biden, maybe you can explain this phenomenon. Is this just psychological?”
She had MANY opportunities to bury both Biden and the Dems! As a matter of fact, did she EVER EVEN mention the DEMOCRATS by name? She never really accused DEMOCRATS for anything.
And how many times did he say “I don’t know”? C’mon….who was REALLY quoting talking points? Yeah…she read the cards too much…..but he had everything memorized.
She should have reminded the left watching that he has been a Senator since NIXON! And with that in mind…Hey Joe, didn’t you vote to DEFUND THE VIET NAM WAR WHILE McCAIN WAS STILL A POW? Maybe my timeline is off there.

Does John McCain realize that there are several columns , but really only TWO columns marked Republican and Democrat and that Americans want to choose between the two? We don’t want some grey area. The biggest problem with McCain is, he doesn’t get that the Libs know this and he acting a pawn in his insistence to be the “nice guy” in this election. And to apparently force his VEEP to kowtow to this is upsetting.
Palin’s BEST moment tonight was when she was asked if something was to happen to the President when Veep, what would her policy be. Gaffes….what gaffes? Really, what bothered me and my guests watching the debate tonight was that Palin didn’t repeatedly mention that Biden has been in the Senate FOREVER. Really…Obama was TEN YEARS OLD when biden was inaugurated into the Senate. AND that Joe was For McCain as POTUS. Hell, he wanted to be Palin…sort of. Really, this was a perfect opportunity to combat all the “McCain’s too old” crap from the LEFT. Biden was elected to the Senate in 1972! Mention that….again and again! “Sorry Senator if I can’t relate to that reference, but I was 7 when you were elected to the Senate and your running mate was TEN!”
And another thing…didn’t Biden talk about he and Obama voting ant talking about legislation that was voted on BEFORE Obama was even in the Senate?!!

Here are two big howlers from Biden. First, Biden was asked when he changed his mind about something. He said that after a few years in the US Senate, he decided that ideology of a nominee, as opposed to just competence, was important in deciding how he will vote on a nominee. Well, Biden had been in the Senate for 13 years when Antonin Scalia was nominated in 1986. Scalia was a very pronounced conservative and never tried to hide his views. But Biden voted for him anyway. Obviously, Biden was not willing to vote against the first Italian-American nominee for the Supreme Court. But cynically, Biden voted against Bork the next year and Bork’s views were not so different from Scalia. So Biden’s only criterion is plain ethnic politics.
Second, Biden said that “together with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of the MiddleEast”. What? it was just the opposite. Back in 1982, Hezbollah, aided by Iran and Syria, had massive bombings of the US marine base at Beirut airport and a day later at the French military headquarters. Both the US and France ran away from Lebanon. Sadly,Hezbollah was the one doing the kicking out. And has Biden noticed that Nasrallah practically runs Lebanon like his own kingdom?

Here’s another Biden lie from tonight:

Here’s what the president said when we said no. He insisted on elections on the West Bank, when I said, and others said, and Barack Obama said, “Big mistake. Hamas will win. You’ll legitimize them.” What happened? Hamas won.

But Obama’s own Senate website posts and AP article from January 10th 2006 that states

Obama said he was encouraged about the “growing consensus around a principle of moving peace forward if there is a responsible partner on the other side,” and was looking forward to the results of the Palestinians’ Jan. 25 elections and their aftermath.

So which was it? Did Obama think the elections were a “big mistake” or was he “looking forward” to them?

One more Biden lie from tonight.

This one he recycled from the McCain/Obama debate, and it’s a pretty despicable one.

And by the way, they’ll pay no more than they did under Ronald Reagan.

Michael Medved tore this one apart on his show after the first debate and, thankfully, wrote a little blurb about it at Townhall.com.

    Here’s the “money quote” (heh)

At the end of President Reagan’s term twenty years ago, the top marginal tax rate was 28%. Today, it’s 35%. Under Obama and Biden, it would rise to 39.6%. How does a 39.6% rate amount to “less taxes” than a 28% rate? Obviously, it doesn’t. When the Democrats talk about taxes paid “under Reagan” they cite the first months of his term—before the Gipper (and the great tax slasher) succeeded in radically lowering the top tax rate. He inherited a top marginal rate of 70%…

McCain/Palin need to keep them from getting away with crap like this.

    9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan…

And then Biden added, “He said we need more troops.” So Biden doesn’t want a “surge” in Afghanistan, but he does want more troops. Isn’t that what a surge is – a sudden rise or increase? To increase troops in Afghanistan would be to implement a surge. What a maroon!

The RNC should run an ad listing point by point the gaffes and mistakes in fact that Joe Biden made during the debate. Plain and simple is all that’s needed to get the point across.

I thought I heard a deep, Al Gore-like sigh while Joe was off camera.

I hope he can defend his statement that global climate change is caused solely by mankind (notice how they’ve changed from referring to it as global warming). I didn’t see where he left any wiggle room for the fact that maybe Sarah is right on the topic and it may be cyclical or caused by other outside forces like the sun.

Of course, the libs saw a totally different debate and see Sarah as mistake prone and Joe Biden as a plethora of original thoughts.

I immediately saw the Constitutional reference problem. I wish Sarah had nailed him right there with…

“There you go again Joe. Is it any wonder why Americans wonder every day if anyone in Congress has even READ the Constitution? You throw around ‘Constitutional’ and ‘un-Constitutional’… but the truth is, you really don’t know.”

“The first step in the McCain/Palin Education Plan is to buy members of Congress their own copy of the Constitution. And following the great examples of teachers in the public school system, we’ll make sure these scamps are doing their homework by having a pop quiz before signing any legislature. Joe, you might want to start studying… you have a long way to go…”

I wish Katie Couric would have read the Constituion also. Her question to Sarah Palin about a Governor “negotiating” with a foreign power, I believe, is prohibited by Article 1 Section 10 unless expressly granted by Congress.

I wish she’d ask Barack Obama or Joe Biden what “negotiations” they’ve had that were signed, sealed and delivered.

Katie Couric proved why her ratings keep dropping. What a ditz!

    Also regarding Katie Couric:

In April 2007, one of “Katie Couric’s Notebook” columns on the CBS News website, a piece about the declining use of libraries, was shown to bear striking resemblances to an article by Wall Street Journal author Jeffrey Zaslow, “Of the Places You’ll Go, Is the Library Still One of Them?”. In the ensuing controversy, it was revealed that Couric does not generally write these columns, although they often include first-person recounting of supposed events. On April 12, 2007, CBS admitted that her most recent column was indeed plagiarized from a Zaslow article without her knowledge, and that the unidentified producer who provided the material had been fired. Couric continues to maintain that she wrote the article. The article has since been removed.

In a nutshell, Couric’s “news” team was caught and admitted to plagiarizing a news piece that had her relating experience in the first person…yet she STILL contends that she wrote it!

Why was Couric allowed to conduct a polite and mostly favorable interview with Joe Biden, a proven plagiarist and liar who had to cancel his 1988 Presidential bid after being outed as a plagiarist and a liar? Wasn’t this interview a “conflict of interest?”

More evidence of the foxes guarding the hen house.

Biden: Look, all you have to do is go down Union Street with me in Wilmington or go to Katie’s Restaurant or walk into Home Depot with me where I spend a lot of time and you ask anybody in there whether or not the economic and foreign policy of this administration has made them better off in the last eight years.

    ————

According to this Delaware site, Katie’s Restaurant is no longer in business; locals remember it on Union Street 25 to 30 years ago.

Readers at Delawareonline.com also mention that the videotape shows Biden saying “…go down Union Street with me in Wilmington AND go to Katie’s Restaurant”, not “…OR go to Katie’s Restaurant,” so that Biden was definitely inviting his listeners to go with him to a Wilmington establishment that has been closed for over 20 years.

    What’s up with that?

Biden was one of the Dems who knifed Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas in the back during his confirmation hearings in the Senate–read about it in the MY GRANDFATHER’S SON book by this great Black American.

Check out PKAmmoTroop’s comments above–very “on target”.

It is extremely disheartening to see that Senator Biden has apparently never read the Constitution. I’m sure his total lack of knowledge (Liberty Clause? Really?) is the norm in Washington, and so I propose a solution:

Instead of letting them go to lunch or do who-knows-what during filibusters, Senators should be required to take turns reading the Constitution aloud. They swore to uphold and protect the Constitution–how can they do that if they don’t even know what it says?
