Paul Newman’s secret support for nuclear power

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 4, 2008 12:37 AM

Here’s an interesting read for you night owls.

Sad that Newman had to remain in the closet over such a common-sense issue.

But that’s tolerant Hollyweird for you…

A huge problem right now in the nuclear industry is that it has an aging workforce that’s not being replaced. There are only 103 nuclear facilities in the US, and none have been built in a very long time as we know.

That is why the younger generation is not pursing college degrees in nuclear engineering, etc. They basically consider the industry dead.

This is an area where real change needs to take place. New technology is out there, but the costs for companies have become prohibitive due to extreme regulations and environmental limitations (not to mention perpetual lawsuits).

Simple put: There is no incentive for either college students or corporations to pursue the nuclear energy option.

Until we have real leadership in the White House, along with a congress that’s not beholden to Greenpeace and the Sierra Club, we may have a chance at clean, affordable energy.

After reading the article, Newman appears to be a very rare human being. One of a few unique people who will actually take the time to listen and learn while at the same time refusing to be swept up by the crowd and its emotion. Just as David Mamet took the time to listen and learn about what we conservatives believe and are saying, Newman did the same regarding nuclear power.

However, what is the real shame is that he did not feel he could be more open about this support for nuclear power. Just another sign of the “open and tolerant” left wing loons.

That is entirely not true. Many universities are starting to see increases in Nuclear Engineering students at their campuses. But, the industry doesn’t need more nuclear engineers…they need your everyday welders, carpenters, and pipe fitters. Those are the fields in which people are told not to pursue because they aren’t typically college educated people.

You are correct that there is new technology, but without allowing anyone to even build a prototype nothing can happen.

For instance, look up the Toshiba 4S reactor, or even the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor. Two very great ideas, but without allowing a demonstration reactor getting build nothing will come of it.

The utilities will decide whether to build new nuclear, not the government. If it is economical they will build which as of right now over 20 new reactors are in the beginning stages of getting licensed and start construction. Just look at the NRC website.

And lastly, you are correct about an aging workforce, but people like myself are 30 years easily from retirement, but I have over 10 years of nuclear operation and servicing experience. Every utility has started to hire and continue to do so.

But are they for nuclear energy? Three are other fields for nuclear engineering, which is very popular right now and growing — nuclear medicine.

Read the position statement from the American Nuclear Society about the aging workforce in the nuclear energy industry.

Link to position statement in PDF here.

    Excerpt:

By 2000, knowledge retention, education, and workforce planning evolved as major issues facing the nuclear industry. Corporate downsizing in the 1990s, in all work classifications, created a lean, older workforce. By 2004, the average age of nuclear workers was 48, with 28% eligible to retire within five years.

The aging of the workforce is expected to create a severe shortage of qualified workers to

    • maintain the safe and reliable operation of commercial and defense nuclear plants
    • continue necessary research and development in education, medicine, power, and manufacturing
    • continue development and construction of new nuclear facilities
    • address and staff nuclear medicine needs
    • continue high-quality nuclear education and the recruitment of students to nuclear education and careers.

The utilities may be the decision makers in the end, but ultimately, they all need to get government approval, which is a daunting process.

Our company works with nuclear facilities as well as uranium enrichment companies, and I hear this over and over again about the aging workforce.

That’s the problem with this industry. Lots of people want to participate in nuclear energy, however, the application process is ridiculous. Especially when they get to the EIS (Environmental Impact Study) portion and public comment period.

And you can only imagine who that public is. The envirowackos have armies of people, so-called scientists, and most of all — lawyers at the ready to pounce on this.

It’s just from the way I see things McCain has gone “race simple,” which RINOs are prone to do. He is simply so intimidated by Obama and the inevitable charge of “racism” if he dares attack the Dems in anyway that his campaign has become paralyzed. Without Sarah there really would be no hope, none — but turning her loose to rally conservatives and Reagan independents and democrats is the last thing he will do. The McCain campaign has gone flat as a plain in Spain, and barring a miracle (always nice to have to count on a miracle, isn’t it?) is doomed to defeat.

    Follow my thoughts slowly.
Observe the dualistic nature of the universe. Good and bad sweet and sour etc.
Observe that you are a total accumulation of all the dualism that come before you.
Observe who is observing this observation about yourself.
Now be very very quiet inside and don’t hold on to any thought. Just observe.
You will find that you are the total of all that came before you. Good and bad, sweet and sour.
Now chose how you will live in this world.
Now have a good belly laugh.

I’m so curious why there is no mention of geothermal energy? Unlike wind and solar, you don’t need a stand by power supply. I would think Alaska could power the whole country ( maybe even all of North America) with geothermal-based electricity.

You may be an example of arrested development if…
    • You, are “Pro-life”, but have never considered boycotting China, & their products, because of their government controlled population control methods, including abortion,
    • You never knew about government controlled population control methods in China, including government issued abortions, and have helped turn China into a super power because you believe in cheap products more than when life begins, in China anyway,
    • You come up with a lame, knee-jerk response to this post without any thoughtful consideration what so ever.
AND I’LL TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ADD ONE MORE:
    • You don’t really know anything about Nuclear Power, the storage & transportation of Nuclear Waste, or the reprocessing of such waste, or HAVE NEVER READ ANY REPORTS ABOUT “Dirty bombs”, AND have conveniently forgotten about “3 Mile Island”, BUT you support Nuclear Power merely because someone else told you to.

As I said in my very first post, if you want Nucs, you just keep them in your own back yard, don’t hire a bunch of illegal alien truck drivers to tranport the waste all over the U.S.
AND suffer any consequences, with out crying to the Feds for a “Nuclear Bailout”.

The waste problem is purely political and absolutely no reason not to pursue nuclear power now…..but we won’t.

I fail to see why there is a necessary contradiction here. Nuclear Freeze refers to weaponry, nuclear power to, well, power generation.

Now it is certainly possible that there are freezoids who want to stop anything nuclear but it seems clear on the evidence the article presented that Newman saw that there was a distinction.

What is biggest fear of nuclear power? Is it justified?

Good question, the illogical fear of nuclear power is something I dealt with off and on during my 30 years at the nuke plant. Some people, I believe, still think the plant can blow up like a nuclear bomb…. they can’t get past the word, “nuclear”. There is also an inability to logically consider the various risks one faces in their everyday life. A good example would be their drive to work. They do it most every day and consider the risk worth the benefit of getting to work. The risk to the average person from nuclear power and/or nuclear waste is extremely small, and the benefits of clean available power that does not add to the “climate change” problem are great. I knew I was safer at the plant than during my drive to work, and never felt in any danger from the nuclear portion of the plant during my 30 years there. There were the normal hazards of any large industrial plant such as high pressure steam, rotating machinery, noise and such, but the nuclear part of the plant was controlled, operated and maintained in a way that maximized safety to both plant employees and the public. We learned a lot from Three Mile Island, and nuclear power is much safer than it was back then.

Another possibility is that some people do not want the large quantities of clean energy nuclear can provide because their agenda of forcing Americans to change their “wasteful” lifestyle will be harder to implement.

My house is about 5 miles from the plant, and if it were announced today that another two units are going to be built at the existing site it would be cause for celebration, not fear. The spent fuel should be transferred to the Yucca Mountain site but is being held up for political, not technological, reasons. Transporting nuclear fuel by truck or train in the transport containers is far safer than the various stuff that gets transported through communities every day, but again, irrational fears are holding up the ability to remove spend fuel from some 60 or so sites across the country and putting in a much safer central location that billions of dollars have been spent preparing.

New nuke plants are being built around the world and will likely be built here at some point in the future. There should IMO be an “emergency” plan to build new nuclear plants now……..but, we can’t even drill for oil.

When the Six Day War made real the heroism of the fictional Ben Canaan, public opinion was confirmed despite the media’s phony “evenhandedness.”
