Paul Newman’s secret support for nuclear power

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 4, 2008 12:37 AM

Here’s an interesting read for you night owls.

Sad that Newman had to remain in the closet over such a common-sense issue.

But that’s tolerant Hollyweird for you…

What an outstanding article. It makes one wonder how many other Hollywierd types are really closet conservatives.

As far as Yucca Mountain is concerned, I personally took a tour, and like Paul Newman, I too was very impressed. Do I mind that it is there now? Nope. I educated myself on the project. The next time some “Independent” voter tells you why Yucca Mountain will be the world’s Armageddon, ask them, “So have you actually been there to see it in person and take a tour of the facility?”

But what I do mind is all these environmental whacko tree huggers that don’t live in Nevada, complain that they don’t want all the nuclear waste in this country to be sent to one safe underground location, but that the alternative is to leave the waste scattered all across the country sitting above ground behind barbed-wired fences. How would you like to live near one of those facilities?

    I’ll take the mountain instead.

Thanks. We will. STNP already provides a good percentage of San Antonio’s power (SA also has a coal-fired plant). They’re building another new reactor. France, one of those places you libs love to emulate, gets about 80% of their power from nuclear. Saves bunches of oil. The only accident that I know of where radiation escaped was at Chernobyl, and that was because of lousy Russian technology.

I always liked Paul Newman. I did not always agree with his politics, he was a Democrat. I remember watching him and Robert Redford on the 1972 Democratic National Telethon. The Dems were using the Jerry Lewis idea because they were broke at the time.

What impressed me about Mr. Newman was he put his money where his mouth was. These Hollywood libs of today make a big show of their wrong headed politics for the Hollywood establishment and do mostly nothing. Paul Newman quietly made things happen and made many lives much happier. May he rest in peace.

In 1972, the democrats needed all the help they could get. It was a disaster for them. If I recall, McGovern won 1 state (Mass.) and D.C.. Who knew, at that time, that Watergate would be their victory? But, back then, not all democrats were extreme left-wingers. Some of them were pretty decent people. As far as nuclear power goes, the Navy has been using it for decades. Ships come in and out of Norfolk here all the time. Yet, one never sees protests about it. Put a small nuclear satellite on the launch pad and watch the MSM and protesters have a fit. Windmills are fine if you want candles on a calm day. We might even cheer on tropical storms and no’easters. “Honey, we can watch TV tonight, a storm is coming”.

I could easily counter that the anti-coal, anti-nuclear, anti-refinery folks should:

    * Just disconnect their houses from the power grid
    * Don’t come crying to us when it’s January and you’re freezing your rear off.

Funny how – in Europe – they have loads of nuclear power plants. But, apparently, it’s only okay for us to emulate their political correctness and other ways of committing cultural suicide – just as long as we don’t realize nuclear power is safe and effective.

Newman looked down at the boy and yelled at the little race fan that he did not sign autographs and should go away. The boy burst into tears and walked away. Gas cooled reactors.
A safety feature of a nuclear reactor that does not require operator action or electronic feedback in order to shut down safely in the event of a particular type of emergency (usually overheating resulting from a loss of coolant or loss of coolant flow). Such reactors tend to rely more on The engineering of components such that their predicted behavior according to known laws of physics would slow, rather than accelerate, the nuclear reaction in such circumstances. This is in contrast to some older reactor designs, where the natural tendency for the reaction was to accelerate rapidly from increased temperatures, such that either electronic feedback or operator triggered intervention was necessary to prevent damage to the reactor.

Speaking of Hollywood, why don’t they bail out California instead of asking the rest of us. They helped create the problem with highly inflated real estate. You made your own bed now lie in it.

But they will not. They are only for helping people with other people’s money.

I don’t know how much one would cost. But I do know, if we don’t become energy independant, the cost to our freedom and security will be too much to bear. McCain needs to get back to this issue…big time! It is a sure winner for the republicans.

“masked vulgarity” is what? All I am saying is we don’t need to use foul language to get our point across. Yes, I want to swear sometimes too. And sometimes I do. For instance, you can be a real smart a$$ at times.

If you don’t think those words are acceptable, why do you use them? Again, all I am saying is you don’t NEED to use foul language to get a point across. If we would go back to a bit more civility in this country, we might be surprised how much nicer things would be. But that’s just me from Minnesota. You know, that Minnesota Nice thing.

Actually, I like aj in the mix. Adds another perspective and some humor too. However, I have to go get some work done and you are right, this thread is probably pretty much done. Back on topic…drill here, drill now…and nuclear plants in every state!
