Maybe McCain does want to win: He finally attacks Obama on Fannie/Freddie

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 6, 2008 02:13 PM

Last week, the McCain campaign said it would be too complicated and politically incorrect to blast Obama for his Fannie/Freddie complicity.

They didn’t want to go there.

Looks like common sense mugged the Maverick.

Better late, than never — via Ed Morrissey, here’s McCain’s prepared text for an event later today:

Our current economic crisis is a good case in point. What was his actual record in the years before the great economic crisis of our lifetimes?

This crisis started in our housing market in the form of subprime loans that were pushed on people who could not afford them. Bad mortgages were being backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and it was only a matter of time before a contagion of unsustainable debt began to spread. This corruption was encouraged by Democrats in Congress, and abetted by Senator Obama.

Senator Obama has accused me of opposing regulation to avert this crisis. I guess he believes if a lie is big enough and repeated often enough it will be believed. But the truth is I was the one who called at the time for tighter restrictions on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that could have helped prevent this crisis from happening in the first place.

Senator Obama was silent on the regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and his Democratic allies in Congress opposed every effort to rein them in. As recently as September of last year he said that subprime loans had been, quote, “a good idea.” Well, Senator Obama, that “good idea” has now plunged this country into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

To hear him talk now, you’d think he’d always opposed the dangerous practices at these institutions. But there is absolutely nothing in his record to suggest he did. He was surely familiar with the people who were creating this problem. The executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have advised him, and he has taken their money for his campaign. He has received more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than any other senator in history, with the exception of the chairman of the committee overseeing them.

Did he ever talk to the executives at Fannie and Freddie about these reckless loans? Did he ever discuss with them the stronger oversight I proposed? If Senator Obama is such a champion of financial regulation, why didn’t he support these regulations that could have prevented this crisis in the first place? He won’t tell you, but you deserve an answer.

Don’t go wobbly now, McCain.

Don’t stop.

Take your own advice: Stand up and fight.

Pass it on:

Please be more careful in your wording. Trolls hang out here. Probably in 15 minutes or less, your quote:

    “…Palin is rubbing…(McCain)”

will be the basis for a post on Kos, HuffPo and DU stating that a conservative site has irrefutable evidence that McCain and Palin are having an affair, which would prove she is a bimbo who only got on the ticket by sleeping with McCain.

Someone’s probably already getting a video ready for astroturfing, and it will be all over the MSM as fact by this evening.

Senator Obama has also criticized earmark spending, those wasteful pork barrel projects stuck in spending bills behind closed doors. And yet, despite his talk on the campaign trail, his actual record is full of requests for earmark projects. In his three short years in the Senate, he has requested nearly a billion dollars in pork projects for his state — a million dollars for every day he’s been in office. Far from fighting earmarks in Congress, Senator Obama has been an eager participant in this corrupt system. In one instance, he sought more than 3 million dollars for a new projector at a planetarium in his hometown. Coincidentally, the chairman of that planetarium pledged to raise more than $200,000 for Senator Obama’s campaign. We don’t know if they ever discussed the money for the planetarium, and no one has asked Senator Obama. But even the appearance of this kind of insider-dealing disgusts Americans. I’m going to put a stop to that, my friends, if I’m President.

Katablog, this is where we all need to get busy, and get out the vote. You know ACORN is doing their darndest to do so, we just have to outdo them! We’ve ALL got too much at stake in this election to just sit by and hope. One of our greatest weapon is prayer! Their side mostly doesn’t even believe in God, let alone what Jesus promised He’d do when we called on His Name!

During the debates, McCain will have to explain this out like the viewing public is 4 years old to hope it sticks.

Right now, republicans are being blamed for this crisis, if you believe the polls. Also, the polls suggest that Obama is trusted more with handling the economy.
Why? It’s like when your sports team sucks. The coach gets the blame, and the coach is replaced. Bush was the coach for the past 8 yrs. Bush is a republican. The majority of the public don’t trust republicans to coach the economy for another term.

I agree. Unfortunately there are millions of voters out there that do not try and understand the details of issues. They need short, clear details.

That’s right. Palin can say that she found out what a communty organizer does and launch into an ACORN/Obama explanation.

If we had the kind of media we had back during the vietnam War, you would be correct.

What has caused this bubble is that banks have been encouraged to make loans to borrowers who should never been allowed to get the loans, combined with the fact that your loan from a particular bank will be carried as part of a group of loans known as Mortgage Backed Securities…this helped take the pressure off banks from making a risky loan (especially if pressured to do so by the federal government with respect to the Community Reinvestment Act of 1994 and other stupidity-BushII wasn’t even in office in 1994). Combine that with the general propensity of Americans to borrow up to their eyeballs, and you have the mees we have otday.

The Republicans can be faulted for not screaming loudly enough about this lack of responsibility ( for fear of being labled racist), and then cow-towing last week with this bailout, among other smaller bailouts.

McCain’s attack on Obama is a long time coming, MJ

I’ve suspected this for some time – but just how the heck do we get the message out to those too lazy to go to the polls if they think it’s already lost

Unfortunately, you can’t. Some people are so lazy, they will use any excuse not to vote. But, as the time gets closer, I think there will be some polls that show things more accurately…they almost have to. No matter what the polls say, everyone must vote. If people don’t excercise their precious right to vote, what are they doing living in this country? We have little enough we can give to this country. We can at least vote!

    happyscrapper,

Another reason for the polls to start showing things more accurately is that no pollster wants to predict the wrong outcome; that would hurt their creditability. As the election gets closer, they will stop trying to “cook” the polls and predict the results more accurately – hoping that the damage they might have done (encourage those supporting the candidate they oppose to stay home and not support a “hopeless” cause).

If you start to see a change in polling results from pollsters that have been predicting an Obama win, that may be why.
