Tales from the Chicken Little Congress: Martial law bogeyman
Calif. Rep. Brad Sherman was one of the sane Democrats who kept his head and opposed the bailout in the face of panic and threats. He reveals how some members were scared into voting for Crap Sandwich 2.0 after hearing that martial law would be imposed. His statement: “The only way they can pass this bill is by creating and sustaining a panic atmosphere. That atmosphere is not justified. Many of us were told in private conversations that if we voted against this bill on Monday, that the sky would fall, the market would drop 2 or 3 thousand points the first day another couple the second day. And a few members were even told that there would be martial law in America if we voted no. That’s what I call fear-mongering. Unjustified. Proven wrong.”

Michelle, tell us some martial law stories from the Philippines and share some insight into how to survive.
They still may need to do it.
The converse should have been true. If they passed the bailout the markets should rise. Doesn’t look like that’s happening right now with the DOW.
The bright spot is as Donald Trump said – As the markets go, so goes the price of oil.
Bring it on Marxists. Patriot Americans can survive. We did it before, we’ll do it again.
I don’t know who’s dumber. The morons who represent us or the idiot electorate who elected them in the first place.
Guys like Sherman should be the rule, not the exception.
Too bad they won’t write a new bill to jettison the old one.
And admit they were wrong?????
The answer is Yes.
Good idea.
Also, how does one begin the process of purchasing and registering a firearm in Massachusetts?
With the police?
With a lawyer?
With the firearm seller?
Anybody got any suggestions, before I ask the son in law school?
I mean, besides the anticipated “Good luck with that in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts.”
I tried looking it up online, and didn’t find much of anything, except that I got the impression that one can still at least own a firearm here in Mass.
Any substantive suggestions and guidance would be appreciated.
The US economy is living off the wealth of a previous era by liquidating entire industries, and allowing infrastructure to fall into disrepair. We are also borrowing from the future with huge budget deficits, in order to finance today. It is clear to me that this can not go on indefinitely. This is the exact opposite direction we need to go in as a country. We need to live within our means as a nation and as individuals. We need to encourage, manufacturing, exploiting our natural resources, and producing food and energy, not more casinos and nail salons. Saving should be encouraged, not borrowing to buy extravagant things beyond our means. Personal debts as well as the national debt must be payed off.
There are tens of millions of people who manage their finances properly. They carry the economic burden of this nation on their back. The top ten percent of all wage earners pay over 70% of federal income taxes. Soon their backs will no longer be able to carry the load. If our government and citizens do not manage their finances, we will undoubtedly devolve into a corrupt and impoverished third world nation with a huge peasant class. Step back and look at the big picture, I see no other outcome.
The bible says: in times of plenty, we must prepare for famine. Simple? Yes. Can this simple root cause, lead to economic devastation? Certainly
Mary Bono should have listened to her California counterpart….
This crap sandwich was just the appetizer…. the snowball is picking up size and speed…..
It would not believe me if the marxists in Congress convinced Bush that we need to declare marshall law and then they will blame it all on Bush. A few days later they will declare that they have seized all the banks and our accounts are not property of the Government so they can fix the financial crisis once and for all.
granite,
You obtain a permit from your local police. They have the forms and information. You will need to take a firearms course.
Fear not Fellow Good Guys and Gals- Big 10 Ranger ArizonaNeanderthal is here! I guess I was nine or ten when I got my Big 10 Ranger badge and to this very day I hold sacred my oath to protect the Big 10 Ranch from Outlaws, Rustlers, Bad Guys and other Evil Doers. Martial law in America? Didn’t a similar situation start the Revolution? Chicken Little is a stewing hen. Three swings and a yank and Chicken Little done gone.
Sort of good for Rep. Brad Sherman (D) Calif. I do not say much good about members of the wrong Party.

I guess this bail out is great if you’re a wooden arrow manufacturer.
He should have asked what authorities were going to be used to impose this.
1. The police – there aren’t enough of them to impose regular law, let alone martial law.
2. The military – nope can’t use them, it’s against the law.
3. The national guard – who pays for it. Individual states would balk and if the feds call them out they they are then active duty troops.
Whoever was saying this should have been called out on the floor of the House and called a fear monger and liar.
This could be the week the S*** hits the fan for a pureed crap sandwich.
I noticed the Dow is off a couple hundred and global markets were panicing.
I’ve read that there could be a cascading effect happening because there is a $53 Trillion derivative market that needs to settle up this week and there’s no cash.
Could be interesting.
I believe most Dems who voted no, did so to be able say so prior to the election. Pelosi wrote them each a hall pass to do so.
But this guy seems like he genuinely against it and the fear tactics used to extort votes out of representatives.
Martial Law?
5000 point drops over a couple days?
Please… there is so much money on the sideline waiting for buying opportunities it’s unreal.
The funny thing… ok.. not funny thing… is what’s going to kill the economy is the burden of this bailout.
Oh how I wish we could find out about the backroom deals made between Pelosi, Reid and the banks being bailed out. But I’m sure they covered their trail … for now at least.
A story yesterday on Powerline is apropos “Doing Well BY Doing No-Good”.
The biggest driver of the financial crisis was race-based social engineering that virtually created the sub-prime mortgage industry. The implosion of that industry triggered the present crisis.
Intimidating banks to make bad loans to minorities was a major activity of community organizers during the 90s.
So a combo of white guilt and ACORN type intimidation to plunge the banking industry into crisis brings a radical activist to power?
What is so complicated about all this and why is McCain campaign so stupidly bowing to political correctness and worried about being called racist? Him and his dipwad Senate collegiality and reaching across the aisle. I think we’re headed for a big fall with iceholes such as Pelosi and Reid “leading” Congress. Yes, I know obambi will appoint far left loon judges. Any criticism of The One is deemed racist and one wonders what BS speech infringement and gun rights’ take -aways an Obama Justice Dept. would promulgate? Even if McCain did win, we are threatened with race riots and McCain compromising with his lib friends. And probably opne floodgates on immigration and awarding illegals citizenship and ability to vote for their dem masters thus accelerating the pigging out on taxpayers dollars at the public teat.
So amusing that Europe is striving to throw off socialist chains and America seems headed to a socialist disaster.
No matter what Obama does, what is the check on him? The lib Congress would hardly impeach him.
granite,
This reference may be of some help to you.
The DJIA is now below 10,000 down over 400 points.

Check here
Do it off the books if you can granite. One of the FIRST things a Fascist government, or a mob, does is go looking for the citizens means of defense. Damn licenses, registration and such are ALL preparation for confiscation. You have a right to survive therefore you have a right to the means of survival. Or you could move to Arizona and help us with the damn Liberals moving here from Kalifornia. We don’t need a license (except for Concealed Carry)and there is no registration. Lower crime rate & taxes than Massachusetts too. But if you must–Massachusetts State Firearms Information.
The DJ is now at 9746 (7:43am PT).
Wasn’t the crap sandwich supposed to prevent (and reverse) this???
Hmmmm…
FIRE. THEM. ALL.
B. Sherman and I do not agree all of the time…
He does support our troops and now…
he voted against using my (our) $$$$ cover corruption!!!
Why to go -Brad…
C-CS from your district!!!
dow down over 500 now…BOOOM!!
heckova job there Pelosi/paulson!!
Boy that was 850 billion well spent….
Here comes panic mode. It is October, that wonderful month (1929 & 1987) when the stock market likes to tumble.
Just saw this:
The official said Monday that Neel Kashkari, Treasury’s assistant secretary for international affairs, will soon be announced as the interim head of Treasury’s new Office of Financial Stability. The official asked not to be identified by name because the selection has not been announced publicly.
The 35-year-old Kashkari is a former Goldman Sachs Inc. banker, the investment giant once headed by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. The new office was created by the emergency legislation enacted Friday to fund the largest government bailout in history.
And oh great leader Obama the god emporer (pbuh) will likely ride this into office. Welcome to the next great depression. Land in alaska is lokking better and better.
you mean the ObaMAHDI
How ever you wish to address our lord and savior, as long as you do it with respect. /sarcasm off.
Truesoldier – Thanks for posting that.
I was just getting ready to post on that same subject, but you beat me to it – saving me the trouble.
Wow, so now the guy that is Paulson’s underling is now appointed to be “in charge” of the Bailout 2008? Who woulda thunk it? Talk about crony capitalism… sheesh.
Oh, Lord.
Kashkari, sounds like cash ‘n’ carry?
A new office, created by our tax money?
Another example of, you can’t make this stuff up!
Yep and I bet it is an office that will never cease to exist.
Fear is an incredible lever, ain’t it??? The worst day of my life??? I doubt it… There will probably be even worse days… Checked WALL STREET, down almost 400 points… Nice RESCUE… AMERICA is now, and always has been a GREAT COUNTRY… We survived other CRISIS, and in my heart i know we will not only survive this, but come out STRONGER…
Probably some great buying opportunities out there. I think an Obama administration would be toxic to wall street, not even counting Barry Hussein’s ignorant call for raqising cap. gains taxes in interest of “fairness” even though he admits actual revenues would thus fall. At this point I’m concerned that real estate is in the hopper in some places.
I just looked at a very profitable company in oil conversion industry that is down $3 today nearly 9% overall. Company is actually in South Africa, but it seems that it is being pummeled even without the bailout because the EU fined them big time for what a previous leadership did anti-competition in the European Union. ..$318 million Euro fine. Now I’m wondering what kind of bullcrap the Euro bureaucrats might potentially wreak on various US industries competing in European. Their courts can take upwards of five years to issue rulings if you appeal and meanwhile your money is tied up in a lock box for the duration. My point is I can well imagine how clueless assclowns like Pelosi and Obama could well devastate the domestic US oil industry. The companies already pay more in taxes than they have in profits and don’t forget much of those profits go as dividends to retirement funds and the like.
My husband just talked to our financial advisor. He said, hold tight. Don’t sell. In fact, we’ll get some bargains. I saw a financial “expert” on the Today show this a.m. who said people should sell, sell, sell. Nothing like promoting a run on the market. What an idiot, but then, what can you expect from someone on NBC? Tomorrow they will have someone on who advises everyone to go to the top of a tall building and jump.
granite – consider joining the NRA as well. Their publications are very informative and they use the money from dues/sales to fight against assaults on the 2nd Amendment. Each state has representatives that can give you pointers on classes in your area.
Any bets on whether Goldman-Sachs survives?

Good point tiredofit08, and as an FYI, Sherman’s ABI grade is D+ – suggesting he’s not very good on the immigration issue either…

Any congressman who voted for this bailout package should NOT be reelected! No American in good conscience should vote for anyone who has so blatently ignored the wishes of the people and bankrupted our children’s future. It’s time to clean House…and the Senate.
Where’s Nostrildamus Waxman and his stream of congressional investigations? I’d think this whole Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac/ACORN thing would be worthy of his time.
Good point.
I’ll check that out.
Thanks.
How many MORE runs are the idiots going to start. This is a manufactured crisis, manufactured by Government Officials. SHAME SHAME SHAME
This should be taken very seriously. The fact that they are talking about it proves they are thinking about it.
Remember when Hillary first talked about the “Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy”? People laughed. But that statement revealed that Hillary thinks in terms of conspiracies. Why? Because there really is a “Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy”.
No, I’m not crazy. Watch the video of Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov from 1985. He talks about the global Communist conspiracy and at which stage Martial Law comes into play.
Democrats talking about Martial Law at this point is very similar to what they did with the bailout as a whole and what they did with the Patriot Act…
They act like they are against it, and get the Republicans to defend it.
When in reality they were for the Patriot Act, for the bailout, and for Martial Law.
What do you think Obama’s paramilitary force is all about?
On October 6th, 2008 at 11:09 am, iamsaved said:
Yes. They are part of the conspiracy.
Take a look at how many of the most far-left politicians and government officials have ties to Goldman Sachs.
Jon Corzine and Henry Paulson are but a few of the many…
Mr swmbo thinks I’m turning into a nut case with all my fears of losing this country as I’ve know it all of my life. I think I’m being realistic. He refuses to believe Obama and his evil minions will be able to accomplish killing the first and second amendment. I pray he is right.
Mommy I’m skeered. The bad men are coming for us….
Martial law? Heh, we have millions of battled hardened troops available. Hate to tell you guys but Chicago, NYC and LA aint Fallujah.
I’ve think I’ve asked this before, but was it so wrong to root for the National Guard at Kent State?
It was like when FDR went on TV in 1929 and told the nation “we have nothing to fear except reason itself.”
“I’ve think I’ve asked this before, but was it so wrong to root for the National Guard at Kent State?”
Nope, not at all.
Although, Kent State was proof the National Guard was lacking in marksmanship training.
Martial law??? Stocks are worthless along with the greenback. We have been forcefed that is is good to offshore our industry and become a service economy. We have become a nation that continues to buy junk made in china and indonesia. The middle and working class continues to cut its own throat. Perot warned about this in 1992. I’m sure that the only things that will matter are guns, gold, and groceries. Better stock up before it is too late.
Stocking up on tuna and spam already. Anything canned is a good investment at this point.
Why not? I got out when the market closed in on 14K. I am just a bit long of tooth to rebuild. I got out in 87 when it got too hot. Use common sense–advisers are fine but don’t take too big a chance with your money to build their portfolio.
I am guessing but odds are this will hit John McCain hard. He is the one who made a big point of the bailout being our salvation. Count on the Drive By Media to repeat that big time. If John McCain continues to “be above the fray” and doesn’t start ripping into the Obamanites he just may stay Senator for awhile and drag Governor Palin down with him. But then Beltway John does have a habit of trashing Conservatives.

These are people that have very little knowledge if any of how the financial markets work. If they did they would know that it is better to let the market run it’s course than to interfere.
there are a minimum of 75000 troops in useless military posts like germany, england, s. korea, japan, and thailand. if each soldier gets paid $1000 per month that’s 75 million per month going into foriegn markets. think of 75000 people looking for houses in the u.s. if we brought those back, and $900 million per year going into our economy instead of our so called allies.now think of those 75000 troops deployed out of el paso and san diego to monitor our border. sounds like a real economy builder to me.
Except for the fact that those troops in places like Japan, England, etc, offer strategic advantages to Americas defense, I would agree. There are certainly places we could end, or at the very least scale back our presence though. Germany stands out. But then again, with Russia on the rise again that’s not the best idea either.
How about instead we cut off nonsensical funding? Dept of Edukashun. Dept of Interior. EPA. Etc.
But…dazed eyes…sputter…but…I thought “fear–mongering” was a legitimate tactic within the overall political strategy of:
“How to Manipulate a Mob to Get Whatever You Want ESPECIALLY if it is not in the best interest of anyone but yourself & a few close friends”.
By the way, I think the terrorist alert is “lemony-gold” or a “ginger”, maybe even “ rose-blush” or whatever…
Pass it on!
Martial Law?
Obama has hinted at Martial law…
