Flash: ACORN offices in Las Vegas raided

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 7, 2008 02:18 PM

Just across the wire:

Nevada state authorities are raiding the Las Vegas headquarters of an organization that works to get low-income people to vote.

A Nevada secretary of state’s office spokesman said Tuesday that investigators are looking for evidence of voter fraud at the office of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, also called ACORN.

No one was at the ACORN office when state agents arrived with a search warrant and began carting records and documents away.

Secretary of State spokesman Bob Walsh says ACORN is accused of submitting multiple voter registrations with false and duplicate names.

Stay tuned.

Via commenter Will Amos, more details:

Agents with the state attorney general’s and secretary of state’s offices served a search warrant this morning on the new ACORN headquarters. The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now office is located at 953 E. Sahara Ave.

The warrant was part of an ongoing investigation into suspected voter registration fraud. Employees are suspected of using false addresses or false names, including those of former Dallas Cowboys, according to the secretary of state’s office.

ACORN is hiring in Cleveland (216)431-3905 , Columbus (614)425-9491, Cincinnati (513)221-1737, for Dayton (call Cincinnati), and for Toledo call Cleveland. Or email polnatoh@acorn.org and your inquiry will be routed to the appropriate person in each of these cities. Intake and training will be held daily at local ACORN offices. Canvass begins on Wednesday Feb. 27th and will work through election day. Please, only persons wishing to work all or most of these days (Saturday and Sunday included) should inquire.

Please do not contact the Obama campaign directly regarding this post as they are not the organization doing the hiring and it will only distract their staff and volunteers from the other important work they are doing on behalf of Senator Obama.

They dont always say its voter registration. They try and use “Oh do you support legalized gambling just give us your name and address.” Or could be anything minimum wage or any issue.

They try and trick your name out of you. I will say I have been asked if I was a registered votera few times and have always turned down giving them my name. I think if I fraudulently give my name that gives them an out so not a good thing to do.

“People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow’s milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman. ‘PETA’s request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow’s milk in the food he serves,’ the statement says. PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.”

AWESOME!!! I have a deep love for Ben & Jerry’s, and this would turn them into Kryptonite!! Go for it, guys! My waistline will be most grateful, because I’ll never touch the stuff again.

And, speaking as a woman who has nursed a few babies… What woman in her right (or wrong) mind would line up for this job, even among PETA whackos? Not nearly enough, I’d wager.

    From Foxnews:

Indiana, for instance, requires ID cards to prevent fraud, Perry said. Other states check registration against internal databases to verify voters’ identities.

Verifying registration becomes more difficult as Election Day approaches. It’s hard in some states, like Wyoming and Maine, that begin voting as early as 40 days prior to the election. It is much harder in a state with a large population, like Florida, which permits voting to begin 15 days before Election Day.

This year, fraud prevention is even more challenging in Ohio, the “deciding” state in the 2004 election. For one week this year — Sept. 30-Oct. 6 — Ohioans were permitted to register and vote on the same day.

Three years ago, Ohio changed its law to allow absentee voting to begin 35 days before Election Day, which is Sept. 30 this year. But residents of the state are allowed to register to vote as late as Oct. 6, creating a one-week overlap in which they can register and vote on the same day.

That overlap has come under fire by the Ohio Republican Party and some Ohio voters, who point out that state law requires voters to have been registered for 30 days before they can cast an absentee ballot. This, they say, creates an unfair situation because it is difficult to immediately verify a voter’s identity.

    More fun:

Organizations like The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) have also faced charges of fraud in their efforts to drive voter turnout during the election.

Twenty-seven thousand registrations handled by the group from January to July 2008 “went into limbo because they were incomplete, inaccurate, or fraudulent,” Perry said, claiming the group recently came under investigation for allegedly registering deceased individuals in certain states.

What they should do is disqualify every single registration made through acron. With such a high fraud rate, I can’t see how they could justify keeping those registrations.
