Who was the Obama plant at last night’s debate?

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 8, 2008 06:01 AM

Greg Ransom e-mailed me the answer:

“The Obama plant was Tom Brokaw.”

Har. Indeed. From my liveblogging last night:

Brokaw gets rolled again: “I’m just hired help here.”

Obama: “You’re doing a good job, Tom.”

Might as well have called him “sweetie.”

    How about McCain!

In what will be talked about and analyzed for years to come, McCain actually lost the election by trying to appeal to independents and democrats, while completely turning off his own base.

McCain likes to say people in his own party sometimes don’t like him very much. Probably not the best strategy to highlight and employ in the general. So, he picks up a couple points with the middle. He’ll conversely lose double digits with his own base.

I just don’t think it would work. I fear that we have too stupid of an electorate. All they’ll say is “Well, that Ayers thing happened when he was 8. Not his problem.” Or: “Well, we don’t care about someone did, we care about what they’ll do now” or “Well, Obama just seems like he cares more”

They’ve proven that, to them, experience does not matter. All they want is someone who is telegenic, and tells them he’ll give them a lot of stuff.

Remember McCain said in Florida he didn’t know much about the economy? Remember how his he dissed Mitt Romney all year long, while Romney has tried to be as strong an advocate as he could? And then McCain goes out and tells the world he’s going to be a flippin’ socialist by buying up home mortgages and renegotiating the principal (forgiving debt, in other words) without telling Romney or Fred Thompson that’s what he was going to do. Blind-sided both of them. Oh, and conservatives, too, btw. Yahoo references that does a fact check on the debates.

OBAMA: “I believe this is a final verdict on the failed economic policies of the last eight years, strongly promoted by President Bush and supported by Sen. McCain, that essentially said that we should strip away regulations, consumer protections, let the market run wild, and prosperity would rain down on all of us.”

THE FACTS: McCain has indeed favored less regulation over the years but supported tighter rules and accountability on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years before the start of a financial crisis prompted in part by those giant mortgage underwriters. Obama was not a leader in that unsuccessful effort. Some of the current problems can be traced to legislation passed in 1999 that lifted many regulations over the financial industry. That deregulation was championed by then-Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, a McCain supporter, but also by President Clinton, who signed the legislation, and by former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, now a top Obama economic adviser.

IMHO, I do not think Tom Brokejaw contributed anything useful, except to take the life out of what could have been a more lively debate!

The real “plant” was Frank Farenkoph. This is the former RNC chairman who the Republicans allow to set the terms of the debates and pick the moderators. Farenkoph was one of the two people who picked an all liberal cast of Lehrer, Brokaw and Schiefer and Ifill . I suppose we should not expect much better from a K Street lobbyist who represents the gambling industry. If you listen to Farenkoph, casino gambling is just what the middle class needs to get them over this troubled time. I heard Farenkoph on CSpan before the Palin-Biden debate. He was lavishing praise of Gwen Ifill and defending her against all allegations of any bias. Anyone who is sentient knows that Ifill is a strong Obama supporter. Maybe all the bells from the slot machines have dulled Farenkoph’s senses.

    Marshall,
I guess I just don’t understand some folks. As you say the “debates” are as they have been some for some time, why would anyone expect more from and be outraged when that does not happen?
McCain is who he always has been, why do some project their expectations on him and be outraged when he doesn’t do
    exactly as they wish?
I felt no need to lower my expectations prior to the “debate” lastnight, and find it sad that MM and others find what seems to be pride in an “I told ya so” self grandizing position.

McCain still can’t believe he got the GOP nomination. As I do. Before this debate I was about to put out his yard signs, but after this last debate I think I will just mow. I cannot vote for BO, so what do I now do with my vote? I’m a conservative and cannot vote for the lib/socialist third parties without slashing my wrists. Can we write-in Palin for president?

McCain is what he is. And we all know it.

I’d love not to have to vote for the lesser of two evils in this election. However, we must understand the massive degree of separation of “evils” between McCain and The One. That difference is too horrible to contemplate, which is why I am voting McCain.

The biggest plus of that vote is I’m voting for Sarah to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency!

I don’t know about Tom being an Obama plant as much as Tom was the dictator of the debate. A town hall meeting turned into whiny, sniveling Brokaw hallowing for more camera time. Go do your own interview, Tom. McCain did enough pandering to Tom himself that I thought they might all have a love fest for a second.

As far as who won? I think that is tough. I honestly thought Obama sounded just like Palin last night. His answers were vague, forced and lacking substance. He stumbled through about half the questions as he formulated in his own mind what the questioner was asking (”what is a commodity, commodity, hmmm, I don’t understand, think I will answer something else”). Obama showed his socialist roots many times (not sure the public cares anymore though), was weak on economy and said some pretty stupid things (”health insurance for children is fairly inexpensive” WHAATTTT???).

So while I think McCain won the debate, I think he lost all chance at the presidency last night. He is knowledgeable, but not likable. He is neither forceful or passionate. His liberal roots are evident and his ability to be a good republican (tax cuts, spending increases) is evident.

McCain effectively took the spark out of his followers and further reminded conservatives why they can not vote for McCain. Oh, those independent, undecided voters? When will McCain learn there is no such thing?

You could skip voting for President and focus on getting real conservatives elected in local elections.

You could vote third party and not vote liberal – Baldwin and Barr are both conservative. Barr is a bit more of a hawk, (but not as much as McCain). Baldwin is a very religious man.

If you vote third party, you are making a plea to the GOP. If enough of us do it, they’ll come back around to their senses. Rewarding the GOP with our votes this time out will be the death of the conservative movement.

WRONG Bansharia, you can try to silence everyone with your empty rhetoric, but by your very statement, you prove the message is getting through.

The third party this election should be the GOP. It is time for people to quit going to the polls like it is going to some assembly line, where they push the button for the party they always have and go home.

Open your eyes people, you have a choice and neither of these parties is it.

Today I have another musical suggestion for McCain …

Aaron Tippin – You’ve Got To Stand For Something

    Chorus:

You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything
You’ve got to be your own man not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what’s right and uphold your family name
You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything

    This is a great quote.
I wish people cared to understand the difference. Last night I watched the debate (and I use that term loosely) with two Dem friends. One of them actually preferred McCain’s answers, but “Can you actually vote for a Republican if you’re a Democrat?”, she asked me. Oy vey. The other kept saying how sorry she felt for Bush’s children, having their dad as the worst POTUS ever, and so thank God for Obama.

“I spit on this before I put it in,” she said to Romney, with a sweet smile.
