Caution: Ignorant, gun-hating MSM at work

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 9, 2008 10:24 AM

Newsweek put a 2002 photo of Sarah Palin holding a shotgun on its latest magazine cover. The editors are clearly trying to freak out their liberal readership.

But their latest PDS ploy is going to backfire. She looks fabulous and it’s a reminder that she isn’t just a conservative elitist who sits in a Manhattan office or in the ivory tower bloviating about the Second Amendment. She practices what she preaches:

The wonderful thing about the Palin effect is that it’s so effectively exposing MSM hatred and ignorance. Check out LA Times blogger Elizabeth Snead’s moronic comments about the Palin cover: “Hey, is that even the right way to hold a rifle? Can’t you shoot your foot off like that?” (Hat tip – Ace.)

I’ll let some of the snort-worthy reactions of LA Times readers speak for themselves:

I suppose that liberals would never know the difference between a rifle and a shotgun – being that you rely solely on the bravery and honor of patriotic Americans to protect you.

Posted by: Carl | October 08, 2008 at 05:26 PM

Is that a right way to hold a rifle? No. But it is an appropriate way to hold a breech loading shotgun. Which that is. Reporters often wonder how those rural hicks always can spot them. It’s comments like that. It’s ok to wikipedia things. That doesn’t make you a stupid rural hick. In fact, having your facts right might make you seem less of an arrogant, erudite reporter who doesn’t even know what she doesn’t know.

Posted by: ASB | October 08, 2008 at 05:29 PM

Your question was “Can’t you shoot your foot off like that?”

Obviously you don’t know anything about guns….your finger has to be on the trigger for it to discharge. Also, with an over and under firearm, like that pictured, the gun has to be closed to fire. Guess you should stick to the gossip and fashions – Go get some gun training before you make stupid comments like that!

Posted by: ladyshooter | October 08, 2008 at 05:34 PM

That’s not a rifle it’s a over under shotgun, Which is broken open at the breach. That’s a common way to carry them.

Posted by: royf | October 08, 2008 at 05:35 PM

Well, actually, it’s not a rifle. It’s an over and under shotgun; but coming from Southern California, we can’t expect all of you to know that.

The longarm appears to be a shotgun and side by side which breaks open. It is not possible to shoot the gun with the action open. Many hunters do carry a shotgun broken open like that over their shoulder.

I suggest before you ask a question if that is the correct way to hold a gun talk to people at a gun shop or range or hunter shop.

Posted by: Tasha | October 08, 2008 at 05:42 PM

A rifle? That isn’t a rifle. But then, how can we expect anybody in the press to know that?

Posted by: Gay | October 08, 2008 at 05:46 PM

Here’s the bio of the LA Times blogger Elizabeth Snead:

Elizabeth Snead is creator and writer of The Dish Rag, a daily blog about celebrities, style and awards fashion, as well as the weekly “Red Carpet Rewind” feature.

Elizabeth previously served as fashion editor at USA Today for over a decade. She’s covered Hollywood’s hottest red carpets and the sizzling international style scene as a regular at film festivals from Sundance to Cannes.

She’s profiled A-list stars such as George Clooney, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Sharon Stone, Jane Fonda, and Drew Barrymore for USA Today and she penned the scathing E! Fashion Police for five years, calling some stars to task for unspeakable crimes of fashion and praising others for their superb style.

Stick to fashion policing and leave the gun critiques to people who know what they’re talking about, sweetie.

Saw MM on Fox this a.m. with Greg Gutfeld. Michelle, I hope they request your services more and more since you’re a major story source for them!

I loved Greg’s comment this morning when they showed the NewsWEAK/Sarah-gun cover. He said something to the effect of: I’d rather vote for her to kill terrorists than a guy who was mentored by one.

On seeing that cover, my first thought was that it would be framed and on display in Mom ‘n Pop shops all over the country (next to the militant Flinchy & Mike cover from the New Yorker). Sarah is stunning, the essence of strength and self-reliance.

Why can’t the Dhims remember that even they gave up trying to abolish gun ownership (in their official platform) when it proved too popular with the electorate, and they slowly slithered away?

You can bet that cover is going to positively affect lots of Dhim gun owners.

But i bet she can spot a fake Gucci bag at 150 paces in incliment weather during an Obama press event ;)

The problem i have with your statement is that really…it doesnt sound like obvious sarcasm. It sounds like some shrill hollywood gossip columnist taking a shot at something more complex that lindsey lohan’s latest photo op. Had the tables been turned and a republican had made a joke like this, liberals would be clammering how stupid we all are as a result.

Yes, I do know many ranchers that have bear rugs (with the big old head laying there for anyone to trip over) they’ve taken in defense of their animals and property, and I have no problem with those. They did eat the best cuts and fed the rest to their dogs. It was recycled in the great scheme of things.

    Stick to what you know.

It’s interesting that liberals harangue gun-toting Americans for owning all forms of guns which they think contributes to gun violence. No, the only people who contribute to gun violence are CRIMINALS, not responsible gun owners.

This chick sounds a lot like my self-involved, I hate guns, I hate children, except if I can use them as props to make a point, liberal sister-in-law.

If it were up to liberals, we wouldn’t have a military or a second ammendment. There is such a cultural gulf between pacificists and traditionalists who hunt and want to protect themselves. Liberals don’t know how to do for themselves, yet they laugh at people like Sarah Palin who can take down a moose (very hard to do), and provide meat for their families for the winter.

Is this woman going to laugh at the Inuit peoples for hunting seals and whales whose meat they live off on through the winter too?

If that is the logic, then do you eat meat, eggs, consume any dairy product, or for that matter – vegetables? Veggies have DNA too. Every thing we eat deprives that source of it’s chance to reproduce. That lovely steak in the shrink-wrapped plastic carton in the supermarket included. Yes, I go to the supermarket and buy what we eat, simply because I don’t want to field dress something and cart it home, but hold those who do in great esteem. There are parts of Alaska where it would take you a week or more to tromp in there on foot. It takes a lot longer to put food on the table when you have to go out and actually hope/pray you get lucky that day.
