Reports: Supporter begs McCain to fight; McCain bungles the ball; Update: Some positive reviews added; plus vid link

Update…here’s the vid via Allah

I am away from my office, so haven’t seen the video of this yet. But several readers are reporting on a frustrating exchange John McCain had with a passionate supporter in Waukesha, Wisconsin. McCain gets a softball — and bungles again.

Banging. Head. Against. Wall.

Commenter nyc123me:

CNNlive online covering McCain/Palin event in Wisconsin. A guy just got up and begged McCain to take it to Obama in the next debate regarding all his shady associations. The crowd went for it big time. McCain said ‘yes I will’ and immediately started about something else. I don’t believe he will.

Reader Jeff e-mails:

He did it, but he had to be goaded into it. Called out Barney Frank and Chris Dodd when someone asked if he was going to name names and call for investigations. And people shouting ACORN, until he responded strongly about investigating them before the election

Also some guy was so riled up about McCain doing something to fight the socialists – Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid!

Stephen Hayes at the Weekly Standard reports more details — including something that made me grit my teeth last night when I heard him say it on FNC last night. Quit saying you “don’t care” about Ayers’ terrorist record. Stop that!

In response to a broad question about how Barack Obama “got here” — presumably got his lead — John McCain didn’t name Bill Ayers but spoke of him directly. McCain said “We don’t care about an old washed up terrorist and his wife” who said earlier this decade that he wished they were more successfu. (Several in the crowd chanted: “Yes we do!”)

…The next question came from a black McCain supporter, who reminded McCain of the candidate’s plea at the convention for his supporters to do everything possible to ensure a victory. The supporter said: “I doubt that anyone has taken, pardon me, the ass-whoopin’ I have taken for doing that.” He then implored McCain to go after Barack Obama at the next debate and asked him to raise ACORN and Reverend Wright. “I am begging you, sir,” he said, as the crowd stood and applauded.

McCain, as my readers above noted, said “Yes, I will,” then hurriedly changed the topic.

We’re Screwed ‘08!

***

A commenter below thinks McCain did “fine.” But what does it tell you that the man has to be goaded and prodded and dragged into going on the offensive on ACORN/Ayers/Democrat Fannie-Freddie corruptocrats? It tells you what I’ve been saying out loud for quite some time — that McCain has always had much more of a stomach for taking own his own base than he has had for taking on the radical Left.

If there is a special medicine to cure him of this pathology, get him an IV drip of it, stat.

Question for discussion: Is it too little, too late?

Update: Rush Limbaugh has apparently played a few clips of the event and other readers are giving the answers positive reviews. Feel free to chime in.

They are so completely out of touch with the base it’s not even funny. You’d think they would have people monitoring blogs like these to get a feel for what conservatives are thinking. They just don’t have a clue.

You’d also think McCain would see how wildly popular Palin is and he’d realize why and do some introspection and change some of his thinking.

I’ve been thinking maybe he saw that everyone wanted her instead of him and maybe that has depressed him a little and that could be why he seems to have given up the fight to some extent.

    He’s toast.

The reason Republicans don’t fight is they have the misguided belief that if they’re partisan, “independent voters” won’t like it will flock to the Democrats. The Democrats have cornered the market on partisanship, so the idea that “independent voters” don’t like partisanship is absolute dunderheadedness. It’s an effective tool used to get ignorant Republicans to keep their mouths shut.

It’s about “hate speech.” It’s about the “rights” of minorities, including the sexually diverse, to “protection” from you.

Every time it is brought up. Obama dimisses it per above and it’s over. McCain must attack the response. I remember Palin “He didn’t know he started his political career in the home of an unrepentant terrorist?” “Thats bad judgement.”

Thats what McCain needs to do. Obama is always one step ahead. Do some thinking for once. Are these venues the only way we can get through to the guy?

    I have heard that McCain is attempting to reach out to the undecided voters, and as such, is reluctant to act aggressively toward Obama…you know, suspend partisanship. So, I ask you this;

Which strategy will prove to get more votes…civility to win over undecided wafflers, or aggressiveness to reinvigorate the conservative base who have all but decided to sit this one out?

I believe it is the latter strategy that will be the most beneficial to the American people.

Nope. You’re wrong. The undecideds don’t have much brains. An aggressive approach by McCain against Obama will be played to the undecideds as McCain being “intolerant.”

It will work. The undecideds are DUMB. That’s why they’re still on the fence. They vote with their feelings. They’re mad at Bush. They need to fear Obama more than they are angry. Obama knows that. That’s why he keeps playing the race card (”If you don’t vote for me, the feeling making you do that is your fear of the color of my skin …….. ).

McCain cannot play into that trap. He is prevented from “attacking” Obama. He’ll be portrayed as the white racist trying to make people fear blacks.

Glad you caught my comment MM. Yes McCain seemed stronger than he did in the debate the other night, but that isn’t exactly any great achievement.

McCain also, imo, failed to clearly answer a question from a Iraq vet about what was his strategy was to win the war on terror in Iraq. McCain first deflected a little by getting the vet to talk about his adopted Iraqi son (which was good in getting the crowd all into it), and then basically said we’ll win by not withdrawing until we win.. not the best strategy I’ve heard, but the crowd ate it up. He did acknowledge General Petraeus, so if his strategy is to leave it up to the generals, then that’s all good.

He was strong on some points, but his immediate answer to the guy begging him to attack just came across weak to me, and certainly not convincing that he’d actually do it.

    Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

Sen. McCain says he considers Pres. Reagan to be a hero.

I don’t recall Reagan ever being too concerned about bipartisanship. I believe that Reagan Democrats came to him because of his character, not that he sought them out as a means to appease them.

Does Obama share that philosophy? He says no. Is he being truthful? Was he truthful about not knowing Wrights views? That requires a willing suspension of disbelief. Did he not know Ayers past or his political persuasions?

McCain has to tie him to those beliefs, not his shaking hands with Ayers. The Annenburg thing was a Republican donor?? The methodolgy was radical. Does Obama believe in that? No? Can we trust him to be truthful?

He wants change all right. To what belief system? Ayers? Wright? Farakhan? His book, Dreams of My Fathers, shows his racial tendencies and belief system. What is his record? His record is that of Ayers, Wright , etc. Does America want that?

Roland, I disagree with your approach. I just read some commenters to a NY Daily news article about the association between Obama and Ayers being made by McCain. Most of the commenters displayed a very uninformed and ignorant view. They repeated Obama’s point about this being a distant association and attacked McCain for being old and Palin for being attractive. These are diehard Obama supporters and NYC is full of them. What is also evident here is that many people dismiss Obama’s associations with slime and terrorists. McCain campaign can either mount a real effort to inform the public on why the company one keeps is important or they can make a half hearted effort. The latter approach is not going to inform the public. We cannot afford a half hearted approach to our protecting us from foreign and domestic terrorists, and we cannot afford a weak attempt to deal with our economic mess. We really need McCain to step up and fight for America. So far I have seen more fight from Palin and in a better world we could reverse the nomination into a Palin/McCain ticket.

McCain had every opportunity at the last debate to slaughter Obama on various issues, yet let the opportunities slip by. He’s too freaking nice! Why? It’s getting him nowhere. The American people are pissed off right now–they want some passion, some fire and brimstone.

Stress Obama’s shady connections, go after the Democrats behind the mortgage meltdown, name names, have the FBI conduct investigations, make the governemental wrongdoers pay! If a Republican is blameworthy, go after him or her too.

How is the most liberal Senator in the nation going to bring people together–it’s not going to happen folks. McCain needs to be strong, but say he is moderate and will bring about bi-partisianship.

And for God sakes appeal to the “middle class”–Obama is killing him on that. Everyone thinks they are in the middle class, Obama is appealing to the so-called middle class, and it is working. Get on the stick, McCain!

Lastly, tell the lemmings that the rich are paying their fair share of taxes, give examples, and drive home that wealth creates businesses that create jobs–the government does not create jobs it only subsidizes them for crying out loud. Get passionate about this, now!!

We have a charlatan, that can give a good speech, an empty suit that is about to pull off the biggest dupe in American history, to our horrific detriment. Most of it is due to the mass of morons we have in this country, but McCain needs to get on the ball now!

Ds shouldn NOT have been able to control what judges a sitting president gets to select for an up or down vote but thanks to McCain the Rs lost that battle and it was then that the Rs lost their strength and ability to rule.

And he is proving with each and every day and debate that he still hasn’t the cojones to lead.

I hope he finds them, and I hope sense can be knocked into him where amnesty and cap & trade, etc. are concerned, but if not, this country is doomed. It may just die a slower death with McCain, but it will die.

And with the passage of the Crap Sandwich, I can’t see our phone calls and emails ever making a mark again. They have taken the power and no longer care about we the people.

Ds and Rs will vote for anything McCain wants that is left because Ds will want it and Rs are too weak to stand against him. But the Ds will continue to fight anything right, and as it appears they will control…… we’re toast.
