Reports: Supporter begs McCain to fight; McCain bungles the ball; Update: Some positive reviews added; plus vid link

Update…here’s the vid via Allah

I am away from my office, so haven’t seen the video of this yet. But several readers are reporting on a frustrating exchange John McCain had with a passionate supporter in Waukesha, Wisconsin. McCain gets a softball — and bungles again.

Banging. Head. Against. Wall.

Commenter nyc123me:

CNNlive online covering McCain/Palin event in Wisconsin. A guy just got up and begged McCain to take it to Obama in the next debate regarding all his shady associations. The crowd went for it big time. McCain said ‘yes I will’ and immediately started about something else. I don’t believe he will.

Reader Jeff e-mails:

He did it, but he had to be goaded into it. Called out Barney Frank and Chris Dodd when someone asked if he was going to name names and call for investigations. And people shouting ACORN, until he responded strongly about investigating them before the election

Also some guy was so riled up about McCain doing something to fight the socialists – Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid!

Stephen Hayes at the Weekly Standard reports more details — including something that made me grit my teeth last night when I heard him say it on FNC last night. Quit saying you “don’t care” about Ayers’ terrorist record. Stop that!

In response to a broad question about how Barack Obama “got here” — presumably got his lead — John McCain didn’t name Bill Ayers but spoke of him directly. McCain said “We don’t care about an old washed up terrorist and his wife” who said earlier this decade that he wished they were more successfu. (Several in the crowd chanted: “Yes we do!”)

…The next question came from a black McCain supporter, who reminded McCain of the candidate’s plea at the convention for his supporters to do everything possible to ensure a victory. The supporter said: “I doubt that anyone has taken, pardon me, the ass-whoopin’ I have taken for doing that.” He then implored McCain to go after Barack Obama at the next debate and asked him to raise ACORN and Reverend Wright. “I am begging you, sir,” he said, as the crowd stood and applauded.

McCain, as my readers above noted, said “Yes, I will,” then hurriedly changed the topic.

We’re Screwed ‘08!

***

A commenter below thinks McCain did “fine.” But what does it tell you that the man has to be goaded and prodded and dragged into going on the offensive on ACORN/Ayers/Democrat Fannie-Freddie corruptocrats? It tells you what I’ve been saying out loud for quite some time — that McCain has always had much more of a stomach for taking own his own base than he has had for taking on the radical Left.

If there is a special medicine to cure him of this pathology, get him an IV drip of it, stat.

Question for discussion: Is it too little, too late?

Update: Rush Limbaugh has apparently played a few clips of the event and other readers are giving the answers positive reviews. Feel free to chime in.

Comparing McCain’s relationship with Rick Davis, who runs his campaign, with Franklin Raines, who is NOT an advisor to Obama nor has ANY position in the campaign is pitiful.

Comparing Rick Davis with Jim Johnson, who was a former chair of Fannie Mae, a financial consultant to Obama, and charged with finding his vice-presidential candidate; however, is far from pitiful.

There’s a reason that Obama is second only to Chris Dodd on that list of contributions. To paint this as being rooted in janitors and secretaries is a bit disingenuous. How would janitors and secretaries know about Chris Dodd?

I didn’t compare Dodd’s $ from the top to Obama’s, so I am confused as to why it is relevant or disproves anything. I have no idea what it is, but I would guess that you are right that Dodd’s would be “top-heavy” as well. but one doesn’t have anything to do with the other.

All I know is that the vast majority of Obama’s $ did NOT come from the officers, lobbyists and directors. And McCain’s did. Agian, that is based on FEC filing. And again, I invite anyone to draw their own conclusions.

We’re again faced with the conservative’s ultimate frustration… that Republicans just don’t know how to play politics. Most Republicans, like the high school team, just plain don’t have the weapons or the talent to win!

Directors generally are outsiders, not members of the corporation, and have an oversight responsibility, but no role in the day-to-day function of the company, like, for instance, Raines, and Johnson, both former CEOs. Your claim that Raines isn’t an Obama advisor is disingenuous at best, since Obama has in fact contacted him on numerous occasions for advice about, of all things, housing policy (at least prior to Fannie Mae’s failure).

In lieu of raising his voice and confronting Barack Hussein about anything, he can just walk out there and say, “Listen folks, most of you have already made up your mind, and nothing more need be said by either of us. You have a choice to make. On the one hand you have Barack Hussein Obama who came out of a deep, dark cave and pronounced himself a man of change. Like zombies his followers followed chanting Obama, Obama. But what do you really know about him? He has socialist ambitions, readily admits he’s going to tax millions and expects you to believe it’s only the upper class, his wife admittedly doesn’t like the country, he launched his career in the living room of an admitted domestic terrorist and continued to work with that individual helping to teach children how to hate America, sat in Rev. Wright’s pews as his mentor spewed hate towards all whites and America, and then lied when he said he was there for 20 years and never heard that. This list goes on and on, but there are no explanations, only veiled excuses of someone just being a guy in the neighborhood. A shady character as president and an equally shady democratic control congress and senate. This team will rape and pilage and take everything you own, and then tell you how you’re going to live your life.
    .
Or you have me and Sarah Palin. My life has been an open book, and you know it all. My record is on display and I have a history of rebelling even against my own party to do what’s right, and so does my running mate.
    .
The ball is in your court. You know the stakes and you know the choices. Make your selection and pull that lever or mark that ballot. The results will be of your own making. So what’s it going to be? A socialist state or a free and democratic society of unlimited potential. If you vote for them, your life is over as you know it.

    Why he doesn’t is baffling.

Experts are have started to sort out the $700 billion bailout and MM was right, it is craptastic.

Its not pessimism, its being realistic if McCain doesn’t start to bring the fight to Obama himself. Palin can only do so much and the rest is left up to McCain. His comment about Ayers and his wife being nothing more than old domestic terrorists almost made me puke when he said it.

Damnit, it’s not about an old terrorist and his wife, it’s about the pattern of associates Obama has chosen to align himself with. It’s about the organizations he has championed and trained over the years. It’s about his willing membership and participation in a socialist political party. It’s about the people he has allowed to influence him over the years.

Let the press and Obama go after McCain on Keating and his alleged affairs. There is documented proof that McCain was not charged with anything and was cleared by Democrats. McCain should have the gonads to stand up for himself if he worthy of occupying the White House. Palin can handle herself just fine too. What else can the media do to her that hasn’t already been done? Slime her about her family, religion, firing an insubordinate staff member, going after a serial wife beater and abuser, accepting a bouquet of flowers, what else?

It is time for McCain to either put up or shut up. Fight or go away. I am damned tired of watching Bush just accept the ass kicking he gets from Democrats, media, and Hollywood every damn day and just stands there with his finger up his nose. For once, it would be refreshing to hear him come to his own defense and not let this crap continue. Now, it looks as if McCain and Bush are connected at the hip when it comes to fighting back and defending themselves. I don’t want a passive in the White House any longer.

Follow the dots through Obama’s life, connect them and look at the whole picture. If that is not enough to get McCain off his butt and become the so-called fearless flyboy he once was, Michelle is right – we’re screwed but good.

I think McCain will confront Obama directly, and he will do it at just the right moment. If he were to lay all his cards out now, Obama would have plenty of time to counter the argument, and any gains McCain might incur could disappear if he tips his hand too early.

Think back to how the McCain camp handled Sarah Palin’s debate appearance. Going into the debate, no one was prepared for the pitbull attack she engaged in, and many think she won the debate by managing expectations before the debate. If you think that was an accident, I’ve got some acorns to sell you. And now, the chance for Biden to counter her face to face is gone.

The same goes for McCain. Why on earth would he engage Obama on these issues in the second debate when Obama would be able to forge a counter-attack in the third? Remember, McCain is a soldier and is familiar with the art of war. He knows when the right time to push your forces is, and he is not going to give Obama a chance to counter-attack. By waiting until it is closer to election day, he stands a good chance to have Obama reeling on the defense as voters go to the polls. By not waiting and attacking him in the second debate, Obama would have had 4 weeks and an opportunity in the third debate to counter the argument and persuade voters that McCain was wrong.

Remember the battle of Bunker Hill, and its most famous quote: “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.”

    Don’t fire yet, John.

McCain doesn’t seem to act like he even wants the US presidency. He’s more like a blocker for Obie. It’s like they’re both on the same team running down the field toward the same goal and McCain is begging the fans to look at him but they can’t tell him from Obie and he hasn’t yet distinguished himself. It’s difficult to see any difference between their ideas and they’re wearing the same uniforms and from what I can tell McCain has yet to begin to act presidential.

If he would show a little backbone and act like a leader instead of trying to be mister nice-guy, he would be way ahead. And he doesn’t do “nice guy” very believably, its more like mister mouse. He has to choose a side but he won’t mark a line in the sand or step down off the fence he’s trying to walk and stop being afraid.

    I don’t want a fence walker. I want a conservative!

I want someone who will stand up for the American way. Not try to be a friend to our enemies which they will interpret as weakness. He doesn’t seem to have the self-confidence needed to run a strong campaign or to be president.

Why do big-spending Republicans have to be acting like Democrats? Why can’t they be acting like Republicans? I shouldn’t need to remind you that Bill Clinton left office with a surplus, and it’s not like George W. Bush was the only one that spent money like crazy, his dad did it before him, and Reagan did it before him. The last three Republican Presidents have handed in budget deficit after budget deficit, the last Democrat gave us a surplus. Quite literally, the ‘Big-Spending’ label can only be accurately applied to one party, and that’s the G.O.P.

And really now, to say that Republicans have been at all bipartisan or accepting of liberal or progressive ideas in the past 8 years is patently absurd. Sure, they talk about it a lot, but like so much else with them, it’s just hollow political theatrics. You remember when they tried to eliminate the filibuster, don’t you? Yeah, that’s some real bipartisanship right there.

Personally, and this doesnt apply just to McCain, but I seriously dislike when a politician can’t answer a simple question when its posed to them. I like Palin, but her infamous little exchange with Katie Couric about where she gets her information about events from was as frustrating as it was asinine. Hell, I can name half a dozen national newspapers off the top of my head that could be used for that, regardless of whether I actually read them or not. It was one of the easiest softballs I’ve seen where it was effectively handled with nothing but misidrection, for no other reason than she just couldn’t name one. It was sad, honestly.

In total, the fact that McCain can’t, or won’t, commit to going after the garishly obvious points against Oblama in relation to ACORN (or anything else, for that matter)…to me shows he doesn’t want to be President. He wants job security.
