What a (country) crock! Republicans want people making more than $250K to have a 36% tax rate, and Democrats want a 39% rate. Everyone is aware of the need to “spread the wealth around,” it’s just a different degree of how much to spread. Even if you want a flat consumption tax, obviously the rich consume a lot more than everyone else. Unless you want a true flat tax for every individual in the country – say, everyone pays $10K – you too are in favor of spreading the wealth around.
To add to the above answer: They are elite. They want to remain elite. In capitalism everyone can/does move up…hence making them less elite.

Ba-Robin Hood proposes taxing the wealthy to a greater degree and transferring that money to folks who do not pay income tax, likely in the form of additional earned income tax credits. Most conservatives do not support expansion of EICs.

Hey Red State, I’m going out on a limb here to assume that your earnings put you in the bottom 50% of American earners. Since your bottom half cumulatively paid only 3.07% of all federal income taxes collected, why do you have any interest at all in what I’m paying in federal taxes? Do you think you have some right to my money, despite the fact that you’re not even coming close to pulling your own weight in taxes?
When you say “everyone is aware of the need to ’spread the wealth around’”, you’re wrong. Some peoples’ wealth is being “spread around” far too much as it is under our current tax system.

Do you think it was right for Senator Conrad to have the CEO of FANNIE MAE, one Jim Johnson, to make a phone call to Countrywide CEO Angelo Mozilo to arrange for a loan for Senator Conrad and was it acceptable for Conrad to get on the phone and chit chat with Mozilo about getting a mortgage? Do you think that Johnson’s conduct was unethical? Do you think that Johnson should return some of the millions he received from FANNIE MAE which were carefully buried from the public? And by the way Barack, do you think it reflected well of your decision making that you chose a FANNIE MAE character like Johnson as your VP committee chairman?

The current top tax rate is 39.6%. Obama wants to raise that even more.
Not only do we pay that ridiculous top rate, but also the CA 9.6% income tax. So…we’re already close to the 50% rate. That’s only INCOME tax. Add to that, corporate tax — 35%, then the sales tax, and all the other taxes that we end up paying. Oh, and don’t forget the AMT.
Like I said in another post about 2 weeks ago, don’t you think if we’re already paying close to 2/3 of our income to taxes, isn’t that enough?
Obama would like to raise that top rate (actually more that just the top rate), close to 48 – 50%. And you folks call that fair?

Those of us who know how to fish, can control the amount of fish caught. The gov can’t redistribute what we decide not to catch, which is why every time taxes are raised, the amount of tax collected actually goes down not up. I will not work harder or longer hours so Obama can give what I’ve earned away. Obama just doesn’t understand this concept at all.

I’m not kidding at all. She is far better than mccain ever thought of being. Of the four running for office, she is the only one who actually makes decisions and has the responsibility to run a state, people, budget etc. The other three only negotiate outcomes. They don’t have to care whether the outcome in is their favor or not. They still have their job and are probably in protected areas for the next election anyway. I would vote for Sarah as compared to any “conservative” running the last 20 years.

It’s one thing to see tax obligations as a means of paying for societal costs like national defense, the Interstate Highway System, and the like. But that’s not “spreading the wealth around.”
That phrase is code for a resurrection of Great Society-style Welfare via confiscatory taxes in the name of “fairness” and income redistribution.
There is a difference.
Maybe that’s because unlike Hopenchange, McCain never made a big deal out of not wearing a flag pin while claiming that doing so was some kind of “false” patriotism. Ya think?

There will be a redistribution of wealth, once the democrats control the government, except, of course, for the liberal friends of the democrats, who will be able to keep their money, based on amendments to all the bills…like Hollywood types and fellow liberal congressmen, and those businesses, who supported them. Typical Soviet style government. Boy, are the old Soviet leaders smiling now. The proletariat (us) will be the payers, either through direct taxes, or higher-priced rationed goods (business/corporate taxes) that we’ll have to buy. This is simple “trickle down” economics. You regulate/tax business more, and the additional cost is passed on to the consumers. Either that, or businesses fold (like Mom/Pop), and scarcity of goods occur, just like the Soviet Union. For the liberals, exempt in their wealth, mission accomplished. And, like the Soviets, no-one will have ambition to accomplish anything or create anything, because it simply doesn’t pay. New drugs for example.
